Thirty Years of Publishing and Advocacy – Neil Brick

The 2025 Online Annual Ritual Abuse and Mind Control Conference Presentation –  Sunday August 17, 2025

Thirty Years of Publishing and Advocacy – Neil Brick

Reprinted with permission from https://ritualabuse.us/smart-conference/2025-conference/thirty-years-of-publishing-and-advocacy-neil-brick/

Neil Brick will discuss how and why he created the SMART Newsletter.  He will talk about how the newsletter and the field of ritual abuse have changed over the years. He will discuss the importance of advocacy and public education.  Ideas for the future growth of the field will be discussed.

Neil Brick is a survivor of ritualistic abuse. His work continues to educate the public about child abuse, trauma and ritualistic abuse crimes. His child abuse and ritualistic abuse newsletter S.M.A.R.T. https://ritualabuse.us  has been published for over 30 years. http://neilbrick.com

Parts of this presentation may be triggering and may describe abuse or violence. All accusations are alleged.

In March 2025, SMART celebrated thirty years of printing newsletters.  The newsletter has been published bi-monthly since March 1995. In July 2025, we published our 183rd issue.  Originally the newsletter was only mailed to subscribers.  In March 1996, we began publishing the newsletter online and we started our email address smartnews@aol.com .  In August 1998, we had our first ritual abuse conference in Connecticut. We have had yearly summer conferences since then. This is our twenty eighth conference.

I originally started the newsletter because I believed no one was fully covering the issue of secretive organizations and groups involvement in the abuse of others. There were a few newsletters covering the topic of ritual abuse in the United States and Australia during the 1990’s. Most of those stopped publishing during that decade.  Survivorship started publishing their newsletter in 1989.  Their publications of their bi-monthly notes and twice a year journals are still being published today.

Ritual abuse crimes began being fully uncovered in the 1980’s. One of the first books describing these crimes was Michelle Remembers by Michelle Smith and Lawrence Pazder, MD. Though the book has been viciously attacked by child abuse skeptics, the reality is that the facts in the book were vetted by the publisher:

Two experienced interviewers journeyed to Victoria and talked to Dr. Pazder’s colleagues, to the priests and the bishop who became involved in the case, to doctors who treated Michelle Smith when she was a child, to relatives and friends. From local newspaper, clergy, and police sources they learned that reports of Satanism in Victoria are not infrequent and that Satanism has apparently existed there for many years. Satanism in Western Canada flourished in many areas with activities far more ominous than some of the innocuous groups now found in parts of the United States who claim some connection with Satanism.

The source material was scrutinized. The many thousands of pages of transcript of the tape recordings that Dr. Pazder and Michelle Smith made of their psychiatric sessions were read and digested; they became the basis of this book. The tapes themselves were listened to in good measure, and the videotapes made of some of his sessions were viewed. Both the audio and video are powerfully convincing. It is nearly unthinkable that the protracted agony they record could have been fabricated.@ (A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER@ pages xi B xiii).

Dr. Alison Miller also verified the existence of ritual abuse in that area of Canada.

“I can add more about Michelle Remembers. Larry Pazder practised in the same city as me, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. I knew him slightly and once shared a case of a teenage boy with DID caused by abuse by a babysitter. It was in Victoria that I encountered my first four survivors of organized abuse, and they were all members of the same coven of a Satanic cult, the Serpents. They shared past and (then, early 90s) current memories of abuse by that cult. Some of their parents were leaders in the cult. They remembered rituals at the same locations that Michelle reported (in particular, Ross Bay cemetery.)…I have no question that he and Michelle were talking about very real events.”  (correspondence with the SMART newsletter).

The notes from the publisher and Dr. Miller’s complete statement is available online at https://ritualabuse.us/ritualabuse/articles/michelle‑remembers/

The McMartin Day Care Case was the one of the first major day care cases to uncover ritual abuse crimes in detail. There has been a great deal of misinformation produced about this case by skeptics of ritual abuse crimes.  This case began in 1983 and ended in 1991.

(See Chronology of the McMartin Preschool Abuse Trials https://ritualabuse.us/ritualabuse/articles/mcmartin‑preschool‑case‑what‑really‑happened‑and‑the‑coverup/  )

In February 1984 seven defendants were arrested and charged with 207 counts of child molestation and conspiracy. On April 2, 1984, the L. A. Times reported that students at McMartin had been fondled, raped, drugged, photographed nude, forced to witness animals being slaughtered and threatened to keep silent. In May 23, 1984, the prosecution filed 93 new counts. The indictment count reaches 208, involving 40 alleged child victims. On August 8, 1984, Prosecutor Lael Rubin announced that the seven McMartin teachers committed 397 sexual crimes, in addition to the 115 for which they already faced charges.

On January 7, 1985, Doctor Astrid Heger testified that she found physical evidence of sexual assaults on 33 of the child witnesses. On June 11, 1985, Judge Bobb ruled that child witnesses will not be allowed to use the new statute allowing child victims of abuse to testify over closed circuit TV. The prosecution immediately announced that it would not call any of its remaining witnesses. Only 5 of those 28 were willing to testify at all and then only by way of closed-circuit TV. Six other witnesses dropped out because Rubin said they could not withstand even the protective TV procedure. The remaining 16 witnesses had been withdrawn by their parents after they saw the effects of lengthy cross‑examination on the early witnesses. This reduces the number of witnesses from 43 to 13 and, as a result, the reduces the number of counts.

On January 17, 1986, before the case is assigned to a trial judge and after losing 28 witnesses because of brutal defense tactics during the pretrial weakened the case, District Attorney Ira Reiner decides to drop charges against five of the seven defendants. Reiner tells parents that Betty Raidor has enough remaining counts to face trial, but says he thinks she would not fit in prosecuting mother and son, Peggy and Ray Buckey. The two are prosecuted on 79 counts and 20 counts, respectively, of child sexual abuse.

In August 1987 the first victim witness, a girl now age 12, takes the stand as a witness for the prosecution. October 12, 1987, Judge Pounders dismisses 27 of the 100 counts. Some parents again refuse to let their children testify under adverse conditions.

December 10, 1987, a retired former police investigator Paul Bynum is called to testify at the trial by prosecutor Lael Rubin. The morning he was to appear, a juror’s home was burglarized and Bynum’s testimony was rescheduled for the next morning. Bynum was found dead by his wife at 5:45 that morning, shot in the head by a .38 caliber pistol. Bynum had conducted the first search for evidence at the preschool site in 1984 at the request of Ray Buckey. ANone of the half dozen people questioned who were close to Bynum could think of any reason why his involvement in the case might have driven him to suicide, reported Kevin Cody of the Easy Reader in Manhattan Beach. “Paul was kind of a worrier,” said Stephen Kay, a deputy district attorney and friend of the Bynum family, “but there was no hint of suicide. He was very upbeat about his wife and new daughter, both of whom he adored.”

In January 18, 1990, the jury returns its verdict in the first McMartin trial. Peggy and Ray Buckey are acquitted on 52 counts. The jury deadlocks on 13 counts, all against Ray Buckey. The jurors are polled and say they believe molestation took place at the preschool but that the prosecution did not prove the case. They expressed disappointment at not hearing more from the children.

In April and May 1990 Tunnels are found under the foundation of the McMartin Preschool building by a team of Archaeologists headed by Dr. Gary Stickel. Ground Penetrating Radar recently developed by the U.S. Army is used to define the location of anomalies underground. Three segments of tunnel, one over 45 feet in length with a 9 x 9 room area are found exactly where the children said they were. District Attorney does not use the evidence because of time and money constraints and the fact that they would have to start a new investigation of their own at the site as they did in 1985. The discoveries are widely reported in the news. (Archaeological Investigations of the McMartin Preschool Site, Manhattan Beach, California

(http://web.archive.org/web/20010123212200/members.cruzio.com/~ratf/McMartin.html/    )

In July 27, 1990, on their 15th day of deliberations, the jury tells the judge they are hopelessly deadlocked on all 8 counts. The judge declares a mistrial. Juror L. I., a 64 year old treasury department employee said, “I don’t know how you could get 12 people to be unanimous in this case. There are too many unanswered questions. Too much time has passed.” Again because of money and time constraints, DA Ira Reiner decides not to ask for a third trial of Ray Buckey. The first two prosecutions have consumed over $15 million and seven years of court time. He is under tremendous political pressure because he has failed in prosecuting the case.

In the early 1990’s accounts of government mind control began to be discussed. One of the most well-known of these was the “The Greenbaum Speech.” This was a presentation at a conference called Hypnosis in MPD: Ritual Abuse by D. C. Hammond Ph.D. in 1992. It was Adelivered at the Fourth Annual Eastern Regional Conference on Abuse and Multiple Personality, Thursday June 25, 1992, at the Radisson Plaza Hotel, Mark Center, Alexandria, Virginia. Sponsored by the Center for Abuse Recovery & Empowerment.  D. C. Hammond was a well-trained psychologist. His credentials are cited in the link below this section.

Hypnosis in MPD: Ritual Abuse

“Okay. I want to start off by talking a little about trance‑training and the use of hypnotic phenomena with an MPD dissociative‑disorder population, to talk some about unconscious exploration, methods of doing that, the use of imagery and symbolic imagery techniques for managing physical symptoms, input overload, things like that. Before the day’s out, I want to spend some time talking about something I think has been completely neglected in the field of dissociative disorders, and that’s talking about methods of profound calming for automatic hyper‑arousal that’s been conditioned in these patients.”

“Here’s where it appears to have come from. At the end of World War II, before it even ended, Allen Dulles and people from our Intelligence Community were already in Switzerland making contact to get out Nazi scientists. As World War II ends, they not only get out rocket scientists, but they also get out some Nazi doctors who have been doing mind‑control research in the camps.” https://ritualabuse.us/smart‑conference/2023‑conference/the‑effects‑of‑social‑movements‑on‑survivor‑support‑systems‑and‑survivor‑recovery‑neil‑brick

In March 1995 therapist Valerie Wolf and her patient Claudia Mullen testified at the Presidential Advisory Committee on Human Radiation Experiments.

“My name is Valerie Wolf. In listening to the testimony today, it all sounds really familiar. I am here to talk about a possible link between radiation and mind control experimentation that began in the late 1940’s. The main reason that mind control research is being mentioned is because people are alleging that they were exposed as children to mind control, radiation, and chemical experimentation which were administered by the same doctors who were known to be involved in conducting both radiation and mind control research. Written documentation has been provided revealing the names of people, and the names of research projects in statements from people across the country. It is also important to understand mind control techniques and follow‑ups into adulthood may have been used to intimidate particular research subjects into not talking about their victimization in government research. As a therapist for the past twenty‑two years, I have specialized in treating victims and perpetrators of trauma, and their families. When word got out that I was appearing at this hearing, nearly forty therapists across the country (and I had about a week and a half to prepare) contacted me to talk about clients who had reported being subjected to radiation and mind control experiments. The consistency of people’s stories about the purpose of the mind control and pain induction techniques, such as electric shock, use of hallucinogens, sensory deprivation, hypnosis, dislocation of limbs, and sexual abuse is remarkable.”  (CKLN‑FM Mind Control Series ‑‑ Part 3 Mind Control Survivors’ Testimony at the Human Radiation Experiments Hearings: Valerie Wolf ‑‑ Claudia Mullen ‑‑ Christine deNicola  http://www.whale.to/b/wolf3.html )

A good articles about the research on DID and ritual abuse and the cover up by child abuse skeptics is Disinformation and DID: the Politics of Memory by Brian Moss, MA, MFT  https://ritualabuse.us/research/did/disinformation‑and‑did‑the‑politics‑of‑memory

This article contains information about now closed The False Memory Syndrome Foundation (FMSF). AIn March of 1992 the False Memory Syndrome Foundation was formed claiming to have discovered a new syndrome. “Syndrome” is a clinical term that requires certain agreed upon signs and symptoms indicative of a disorder. The FMSF definition of “false memory” does not meet these criteria:  Despite the fact that “False Memory Syndrome” remained undefined and had never been the subject of any research, the FMSF focused its early activities on influencing the media and legal system. The definition of “False Memory Syndrome” did not evolve from clinical studies; rather the purported syndrome’s description is based on the accounts of parents claiming to be falsely accused of child sexual abuse, usually by their adult daughters. (Disinformation and DID: the Politics of Memory)

The FMSF group started in the early 1990s. In the 1980s and the early 1990s, there was mixed coverage of ritual abuse crimes, some favorable coverage and some unfavorable.  By the mid-1990s, most of the media coverage about ritual abuse crimes was biased and unfavorable.

I started remembering ritual abuse memories in 1990 when I stopped using alcohol and I moved away from the area where I grew up.  I had already started a period of self exploration prior to this, meditating and working on building meditative mind states.  There was very little information available at that time. A few years later I found about Survivorship and other ritual abuse newsletters.  In SMART Issue 4 – September 1995 (https://ritualabuse.us/2008/10/issue‑4‑september‑1995/ ) I republished a copy of an interview I did with S.O.A.R. (Survivors of Abusive Rituals) in July 1993. I discussed my allegations of Masonic Ritual Abuse and my healing process at that time.  The first ten issues of SMART in 1995 and 1996 covered allegations against the Masons and the Mormons.  In 1997, we started to cover the issues of Government Mind Control (as discussed above in the Presidential Advisory Committee on Human Radiation Experiments.)  In our seventeenth issue we have an article about Claudia Mullen.  https://ritualabuse.us/2008/10/issue‑17‑november‑1997/

A quick reference list for all of our newsletters is at https://ritualabuse.us/newsletter/back‑issues‑ordering‑form/

We also have a search engine bar at our website  https://ritualabuse.us in the top right-hand corner.

This following may be very triggering for RA/MC survivors.

In our thirty-fourth issue in September 2000, I discussed how I realized that I am an alleged survivor of mk‑ultra programming, and Illuminati programming. I had known for many years that I was a survivor of alleged Masonic ritual abuse. The last few years I had been having more memories about being experimented on in lab settings and electroshocked. While talking to friends, I had a very strong emotional feeling, like I had been hit by an incredible wind in my midsection, and I felt very disorientated. I realized that all sorts of walls had gone down in my system and that I was very confused and disorientated, like spin programming. I really knew at that moment I was Illuminati. This fits with the Masonic piece I had talked about for years.

I didn’t fully realize this until this particular moment, but I had always kept my mind open to whatever memories or feelings I had, thinking about them to see if and how they fit.

After talking to my friends, I had an incredible deal of trouble finding my way out of where I was via car and drove around lost for about ten minutes or so until I could find the highway. I realized that this was a disorientating program that I was supposed to have once I got to this layer of programming. That whole night until I fell asleep, I was terrified someone was going to come and get me or kill me because I had remembered all this. I realized this was also programming. The next day I felt a lot better, having worked through the feelings accompanying these programs. I began to work on unraveling the memories and programs that had been put in me.

I realized that I was trained by delta force programs, to kill. I had memories of being put on planes with groups of other mk‑ultra delta survivors to do certain jobs, usually to kill, but sometimes to get information. My jobs varied on different missions. Sometimes I killed but I was also supposed to clean up and/or be a lookout.

I have memories of sometimes being drugged or blindfolded or having a rope tied around me so I wouldn’t know exactly where we were going or what we were doing. It was usually dark and my vision had never been very good anyway. Missions were on a “need to know” basis.

Now I realize I am a survivor of Illuminati programming, Masonic section. The Illuminati symbols had always bothered me, they are sometimes similar to the Masonic ones and historically, I believe the groups are connected. I was also used in mk‑ultra type experiments to see how someone would react and how much pain they could take before passing out, at least on the East Coast. This fits with my extremely high pain threshold.

After having all of these memories, I felt like a huge weight had been lifted off of me. I had not had any major memories in a while. I also felt much stronger and much more confident. I am now much more aware of triggers and much more in tune with my gut feelings about what and who is and isn’t safe. This increased confidence had helped me state my needs clearer and stronger in my relationships with others. I am also a lot less afraid and terrified of the world. I think that this is due to the fact that I have worked through a lot of fear and confusion or disorientation type programming. I have increased clarity and energy because I no longer need to hold all of this inside me anymore behind amnesic barriers. (https://ritualabuse.us/2008/10/issue‑34‑september‑2000/ )

In the early 2000’s. SMART Newsletter began to cover clergy abuse issues and other cult abuse and mind control cases. Though these cases had been discussed since the 1990’s, they became well known in 2002. SMART Newsletter March 2002 – Issue 43 discusses a wide variety of clergy abuse cases including those in the Boston area.  https://ritualabuse.us/2008/10/issue‑43‑march‑2002/ These cases showed how severe abuse crimes can be covered up for decades.

One major case was described in Geoghan found guilty of sex abuse – Boy was assaulted at Waltham pool By Kathleen Burge, Globe Staff, 1/19/2002 AThe Archdiocese of Boston, which has settled 50 civil lawsuits filed by victims of Geoghan at a cost of at least $10 million, released a three‑paragraph statement saying it was grateful that a verdict had been reached….Geoghan has been accused of molesting at least 130 children since the 1960s, but he has been criminally charged with assaulting just three. Geoghan is also named in 84 civil lawsuits alleging sexual abuse. https://web.archive.org/web/20020208002253/http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/019/metro/Geoghan_found_guilty_of_sex_abuse+.shtml

In 2008, we published information on the Extreme Abuse Survey.  https://extreme‑abuse‑survey.org/   The Extreme Abuse Survey final results are online with findings, questionnaires and presentations for download as pdf‑files. More than 750 pages of documentation.

Understanding ritual trauma: A comparison of findings from three online surveys B Handout for Karriker, Wanda. (2008, November). Understanding ritual trauma: A comparison of findings from three online surveys. Paper presented at the meeting of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation, Chicago, IL.

10 Extreme Abuse Survey Findings Helpful to Understanding Ritual Trauma

  1. Ritual abuse/mind control (RA/MC) is a global phenomenon.

  2. A diagnosis of Dissociative Identity Disorder is common for persons who report histories of RA/MC. (84% of EAS respondents who answered that they have been diagnosed with DID [N=655] reported that they are survivors of RA/MC).

  3. Ritual abuse (RA) is not limited to SRA, i.e., satanic ritual abuse, sadistic abuse, satanist abuse.

  4. RA is reported to involve mind control techniques.

  5. Some extreme abuse survivors report that they were used in government‑sponsored mind control experimentation (GMC).

  6. RA/MC is reported to be involved in organized Aknown@ crime.

  7. RA/MC is reported to be involved in clergy abuse.

  8. Most often reported memories of extreme abuse are similar across all surveys.

  9. Most often reported possible aftereffects of extreme abuse are similar across all surveys.

  10. In rating the effectiveness of healing methods, therapists tend to favor stabilization techniques; survivors are more open to alternative ways to cope with indoctrinated belief systems.

The SMART conference had unfortunately attracted media attacks. We found that for the most part the media was not interested in being objective or citing the actual research we had developed over the years.

In 2009, our conference was attended by a now well known child abuse skeptic, Douglas Misicko.

Douglas Misicko has used various aliases to attack survivors. His best known aliases are Doug Mesner and Lucien Greaves (of the Satanic Temple). He did not notify the conference that he was a journalist. He and his group (The Satanic Temple and Grey Faction) has attacked many other survivor and professional groups, including Survivorship.org and the ISSTD.  His groups have also harassed clinicians, filing licensing complaints against them.  He worked with the False Memory Syndrome Foundation and has continued their work since they have closed down. SMART and others groups have successfully rebutted his false claims against DID sufferers and ritual abuse survivors.

Grey Faction, Satanic Temple and Lucien Greaves Fact Sheet:

For almost a decade Douglas Misicko using several aliases (including Douglas Mesner and Lucien Greaves) has harassed groups helping child abuse, rape and trauma survivors. He has also harassed groups providing research in support of child abuse, rape and trauma survivors.

In 2013, he and others created a group called the Satanic Temple. One part of this group is called the Grey Faction. The Grey Faction states they “invade” conferences. These conferences are provided to help and educate child abuse, rape and trauma survivors and their helpers.  https://ritualabuse.us/ritualabuse/grey‑faction‑satanic‑temple‑and‑lucien‑greaves‑fact‑sheet/

In March 2020, COVID became a global pandemic.  This changed the world interacted and presented data and research. SMART moved to online conferences in 2020.  This allowed survivors from all around the world to attend our conference. We posted our conference presentations online with their pdfs, so that all survivors could watch the videos, even if they were unable to attend the conference. We eventually moved our newsletters entirely to email and webpages, no longer printing and mailing newsletters.

In the thirty years that SMART has been in existence, we have developed one of the largest databases in the world for survivors and their supporters.

Our newsletters contain data about child abuse, ritual abuse, cults, mind control, DID/MPD, dissociation, sex trafficking and trauma.   https://ritualabuse.us/newsletter/

Recovered memories have been defined as the phenomenon of partially or fully losing parts of memories of traumatic events, and then later recovering part or all of the memories into conscious awareness. They have also been defined as the recollections of memories that are believed to have been unavailable for a certain period of time. There is very strong scientific evidence that recovered memories exist. This has been shown in many scientific studies. The content of recovered memories have fairly high corroboration rates.

A body of empirical evidence indicates that it is common for abused children to reach adulthood without conscious awareness of the trauma. There is scientific evidence in support of the phenomena of dissociation and recovered memory in Holocaust survivors.  https://ritualabuse.us/research/recovered‑memories‑and‑dissociative‑amnesia‑scientific‑evidence‑and‑accuracy‑rates/

Delineates the etiological antecedents of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) and enumerates upon the scientific evidence proving the existence of DID. This paper explains the diagnostic criteria of DID, its incidence rates and cross‑cultural characteristics, present arguments to counter the idea that suggestibility may be a factor in its misdiagnosis and delineate the data that shows a clear connection between traumatic wartime experiences and dissociation and trauma and DID. It considers the historical development of the debate surrounding DID, including its increased diagnosis around the turn of the last century, reasons for its decline in diagnosis in the mid part of the last century and reasons for its increased diagnosis toward the end of the 20th century. It deliberates upon the claims made by several researchers that DID can be created in the laboratory as well as the critiques surrounding those claims. It discusses the neurobiological evidence proving the connection between DID and certain neurobiological indicators. Included is a discussion of the modern theory of iatrogenic DID and a critique of this theory. A debate about the creation of DID as a social construction and critiques of this theory are presented as well. It concludes, by presenting the argument that the research on DID shows it to be a valid psychiatric diagnosis which robustly meets all the necessary validity requirements. http://ritualabuse.us/research/did/the‑etymological‑antecedents‑of‑and‑scientific‑evidence‑for‑the‑existence‑of‑dissociative‑identity‑disorder/

Stop Mind Control and Ritual Abuse Today

SMART is celebrating our 30th anniversary.

S.M.A.R.T. ritual abuse newsletter was founded in 1995 by Neil Brick. http://neilbrick.com

The purpose of S.M.A.R.T. is to help stop ritual abuse and child abuse and to help those who have been ritually abused.  We work toward this goal by disseminating information on the connections between secretive organizations, ritual abuse, and mind control and by providing resources to survivors of child abuse, ritual abuse and mind control.

We publish scientific information about ritual abuse and trauma crimes.

We have this web site, a bimonthly newsletter, an e‑mail discussion list, and annual conferences. If you have resources with information about ritual abuse and mind control, especially information about secretive organizations, please send them to smartnews@aol.com for inclusion in the newsletter. Please note: S.M.A.R.T. has no paid employees and all money paid to S.M.A.R.T. goes toward efforts to educate survivors and the general public about survivor issues and research.

Advocacy and public education are crucial to developing a safer world for children, child and ritual abuse survivors and the entire world.  Trauma can cause severe damage to its victims, as shown by the ACE study https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/aces/about.html

We can prevent trauma, but we need to discuss it and acknowledge its existence.  Over the last thirty years, progress has been made to expose child abuse, sexual abuse and RA/MC crimes.  Many of the sources listed on the Internet are now pro-survivor and accurate.  A few biased ones, like wikipedia, which has biased and inaccurate pages which attack the reality of child abuse crimes still unfortunately exist.

Wikipedia has a long history of problems with accuracy, bias and allegations of connections to pedophilia and pornography. https://ritualabuse.us/ritualabuse/articles/wikipedia‑has‑a‑long‑history‑of‑problems

The Truth about Satanic Ritual Abuse – Wikipedia rebuttal  https://ritualabuse.us/ritualabuse/articles/the‑truth‑about‑satanic‑ritual‑abuse/

SMART recommends that people do not use Wikipedia as a source of information for child abuse or other topics, due to its potential for having inaccurate and biased information.

The good news is that there are many accurate pages now on the Internet.  Over the last thirty years, the exposure of clergy abuse, cult abuse, sex trafficking and serial pedophiles with legal consequences, has helped the general public learn about the high numbers of abuse and mind control victims.

We still have work to do.  People are still strongly affected by propaganda and mind control. We can fight this by telling the people we know how to avoid being controlled by these techniques. We need to publish more research, build more websites and use social networking to let everyone know about the realities of ritual abuse and mind control.

We have come a long way to exposing RA/MC crimes. As the Extreme Abuse Survey says: The World Will Know

It's easy to implant false childhood memories, right? Wrong, says a new review

It's easy to implant false childhood memories, right? Wrong, says a new review

During the 1990s, groundbreaking work by psychologists demonstrated that human memory is flexible and vulnerable and that it’s very easy for people to experience “false memories” that feel real, but which are actually a fiction. One major implication of this was in the evaluation of adults’ accounts of how they’d been abused in childhood. In a recent journal editorial, for instance, one of the pioneers of false memory research argued that the same techniques used by therapists to recover repressed memories of abuse have been shown in the lab to “produce false memories in substantial numbers of research participants”.

But there are some experts who believe the false memory researchers have gone too far. Chris Brewin and Bernice Andrews are two British psychologists with these concerns. In their new systematic review in Applied Cognitive Psychology they have taken a hard look at all the evidence, and they argue that we need to rethink the idea that false memories are so easily induced....

Consider one key experimental technique known as “imagination inflation”, which aims to provoke false memories in participants simply by asking them to write about fictitious events as if they had really happened.

As a first step participants are surveyed about a range of things that might happen in a typical childhood, and then they are asked to use their imagination to write about one of these events that they believe didn’t actually happen in their own childhood. After this writing task, participants are asked again to rate how likely it is that they actually experienced this event in their own childhood.

Overall, after completing the imaginative writing task, most people tend to shift their beliefs, to think that it’s more plausible that they may actually have experienced the event they wrote about. But in 13 of 14 the published datasets that Brewin and Andrews reviewed where this technique was used, belief only changed by one point or less on an eight-point scale (from strongly believing it didn’t happen on one end of the scale, to strongly believing it did on the other). As these shifts in belief often weren’t enough to tip participants over the scale’s half-way point, this supposed induction of "false memories" involved the sowing of doubt but not the creation of a new memory – most participants still considered that the events they’d written about hadn’t happen to them, it’s just that they were less confident in that belief....

The most powerful technique used to induce false memories is memory implantation. This approach involves parents and authority figures conniving over multiple sessions to persuade a participant that an event really happened in their childhood, going as far in some cases as doctoring photographs to produce incontrovertible proof. These studies often produce new recollections of some kind – up to 78 per cent of participants report new, false memories when doctored photographs are used – but Brewin and Andrews show that when an even more stringent definition of a false memory is used – that it must involve mental images – then this rate of new recollection drops to 25 per cent, and regarding memories that the participant is actually confident in, to only 15 per cent.

Overwhelmingly, most participants in these studies disbelieve the childhood event ever happened, and they doubt any apparently new memories that arise, despite the pressure to think otherwise. Tellingly, when studies have collected ratings of the strength of any new memories from both the participants and the researchers, the researchers’ ratings are routinely higher. After hearing their parents’ stories, the participants typically become better able to narrate a plausible and even elaborate account that persuades the researcher a memory has been created. But often the participants themselves aren't buying it, and they can draw the distinction between memory-like content and a true memory.

It’s clear that false memory paradigms can shift how we evaluate past events, and can for a minority of participants provoke memory-like experiences. But the rates are very low and the effects variable, and the one that produces the strongest effect – memory implantation – is also the most invasive, and least likely to match the experiences of people in normal life or within a therapy session. Brewin and Andrews suggest their review “indicates that the majority of participants are resistant to the suggestions they are given” and that the rhetoric that false beliefs are easy to instil should be re-examined.

Creating Memories for False Autobiographical Events in Childhood: A Systematic Review
Brewin, C., & Andrews, B. (2016). Creating Memories for False Autobiographical Events in Childhood: A Systematic Review Applied Cognitive Psychology DOI: 10.1002/acp.3220

Summary

Using a framework that distinguishes autobiographical belief, recollective experience, and confidence in memory, we review three major paradigms used to suggest false childhood events to adults: imagination inflation, false feedback and memory implantation. Imagination inflation and false feedback studies increase the belief that a suggested event occurred by a small amount such that events are still thought unlikely to have happened. In memory implantation studies, some recollective experience for the suggested events is induced on average in 47% of participants, but only in 15% are these experiences likely to be rated as full memories.

We conclude that susceptibility to false memories of childhood events appears more limited than has been suggested. The data emphasise the complex judgements involved in distinguishing real from imaginary recollections and caution against accepting investigator-based ratings as necessarily corresponding to participants' self-reports.

Dissociative Identity Disorder: The Mystery Surrounding its Etiology and its Connection to Satanic Ritual Abuse, Repressed memory in child molestation lawsuit

Dissociative Identity Disorder: The Mystery Surrounding its Etiology and its Connection to Satanic Ritual Abuse

A Research Paper Presented to The Faculty of the Adler Graduate School In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree of Master of Arts in Adlerian Counseling and Psychotherapy....

The purpose of this project is to inform its readers of the often overlooked and sometimes avoided diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder along with its possible connections to extreme abuse such as satanic ritual abuse as well as intentional mind control....

It has also been argued that dissociative identity disorder is a “chronic, posttraumatic dissociative disorder characterized by recurrent disturbances of identity and memory” (Kluft, 1988, p. 212). Dissociative identity disorder is a complex disorder that generally finds its roots in an individual?s childhood. “The severe, sustained, and repetitive trauma that occurs during the early to middle stages of childhood (ages 2 and a half to 8) for most victims is thought to promote the development of Multiple Personality Disorder” now known as dissociative identity disorder (Wilbur, 1984, p. 5)....

The Connection of Dissociative Identity Disorder and Satanic Ritual Abuse

There is a rising belief among therapists working with those diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder that there has been a missing piece to the puzzle to better understand and work with these clients. That missing clue being that a high percentage rate of individuals diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder are also victims of satanic ritual abuse....

Over the past few decades the field of psychology has improved its effectiveness in society as it has willingly accepted the awful truths that research was revealing regarding issues of abuse. For example, in the 1960's there was rampant denial that any form of child abuse even existed. There seemed to be a belief that maybe “one in one hundred children were abused” (Friesen, 1991, p. 206). In the 1970's incest finally came into focus of a possibility of being more widespread than previously thought and in the 1980?s victims of abuse and incest were finally beginning to be believed as telling the truth. As a result of these individuals finally being believed diagnoses such as multiple personality disorder, now known as dissociative identity disorder, began to rise (Friesen, 1991)....

As the field of psychology and more importantly society embraced the ugly truth of rampant child abuse and the reality of wide spread incest America improved. America improved in its ability to rescue, protect, and bring some restoration to these abused individuals by lifting the widespread cloak of shame surrounding abuse. As society and the field of psychology slowly embrace and believe what individuals diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder are sharing as truth then the cloak of shame for them can be lifted as well....

One of the mainstays of working with individuals with dissociative identity disorder is to aid the client in breaking down the amnesiac, dissociative walls which have been constructed as a means of self-protection. One way to help break down these walls is to aid the individual in remembering the abuse he/she endured. As these walls begin to weaken more and more memories of trauma begin to rise. According to the research conducted by Bryant (1995) these memories are not delusions, hallucinations, or made up fantasy, in fact as research is revealing they are indeed memories of actual events that have taken place....

Extreme Abuse Survey....
The results were overwhelming in revealing a connection of satanic ritualistic abuse to the diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder as well as opening shedding light into other ritualistic forms of abuse such as mind control used through the occult rituals as well as government-sponsored mind control experiments. This research reveals the two are very often connected with one another. For example this data shows that “64% of 985 respondents reported memories of incest and 48% of 977 respondents reported memoires of ritual abuse before they sought therapy and 69% of 257 respondents who reported secret mind control experiments used on them as children also reported having been abused in a satanic cult” (Rutz et al., 2008, p. 50). http://www.alfredadler.edu/sites/default/files/Vogelsang%20MP%202010.pdf

Psychiatrist testifies on repressed memory in child molestation lawsuit

By Lee Hammel TELEGRAM  GAZETTE STAFF

WORCESTER —  A defense expert testified today in U.S. District Court that “there is no satisfactory scientific evidence that you could lock up a memory of a major traumatic event” and not remember it again.

Harrison G. Pope, a clinical psychiatrist and professor at Harvard Medical School, testified for Richard B. Edison, a plastic surgeon who is being sued by Timothy Clark. The Charlton resident alleges that the doctor sexually abused him for several years, beginning in 1974, when the doctor was a student at University of Massachusetts Medical School, and Mr. Clark was a 10 year old in Shrewsbury.

Mr. Clark returned to the witness stand today to say that he had no memory of his sexual abuse in the 70s until he visited his mother's grave in 2008. If so, that would reset the 3-year statute of limitations, allowing him to pursue the allegations against the doctor.

Stephen J. Gordon, Mr. Clark's lawyer, got Dr. Pope to acknowledge that  he made “possibly more than $100,000” by testifying or consulting on repressed memory cases last year, more than he got for working half-time at Harvard. Dr. Pope said he testified or consulted for the Roman Catholic Diocese in Indiana on about 10 cases and two other cases for the Diocese in Minnesota.

James Hopper, an expert for the plaintiff, gave more subtle testimony. The Harvard Medical School psychologist testified that an abuse victim can forget a traumatic event, deliberately or otherwise, and then be unable to recover it until there is a “password” such as a similar event or someone questioning the victim about the event.

Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV said that after additional testimony, he expects the case to be given to the jury of 5 women and 3 men on  Monday.  http://www.telegram.com/article/20120713/NEWS/120719752/1116/

Deal ends trial of surgeon By Lee Hammel TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF Tuesday, July 17, 2012

WORCESTER —  The civil trial in which a doctor was accused of molesting a 10-year-old boy in Shrewsbury when he was a medical student 38 years ago ended abruptly in its sixth day yesterday when the two sides announced in U.S. District Court that they had reached a settlement.

Lawyers for Dr. Richard B. Edison, 59, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Timothy Clark, 48, of Charlton, said they reached an agreement Sunday night. They informed Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV as a hearing was scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. yesterday, the last scheduled day of testimony.

The settlement leaves unanswered how the jury would have voted on the allegations of years of sexual abuse, which were made by a man who said that he had repressed his memory of what happened to him over several years in the mid-1970s until he visited his mother’s grave the day before Mother’s Day in 2008.

Details of the settlement were not disclosed because of a confidentiality clause....

One of the eight jurors said he was more impressed with Mr. Clark’s allegations than with Dr. Edison’s defense. The juror, Pei Liang Zhang, said, “Personally, I believe that the defendant must realize he did something to the poor” plaintiff.

Mr. Zhang, an engineer living in Shrewsbury, said he found it “pretty obvious” why the plaintiff’s mother went court to get an order for Mr. Edison to stay away from her children. There was evidence that Mr. Edison was charged in 1977 with disturbing the peace in a complaint by Diane Clark, mother of Timothy Clark, in the state’s Central District Court....

The district attorney’s office is not looking into the allegations raised in the trial, according to spokesman Paul Jarvey. The office looked into those allegations around 2008, he said, and found insufficient information to proceed. http://www.telegram.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20120717/NEWS/107179925/

Selective memory does exist, say scientists

Selective memory does exist, say scientists

Selective memory really exists and we can train our mind to forget embarrassing moments completely, research claims. 06 Jul 2011

A study found that repressing these memories for long enough can lead to us erasing them completely.

Using EEG scans, scientists noted the parts of volunteers' brains which became active when actively trying to forget something.

They were also able to pinpoint the exact moment a memory is 'forgotten', and claim that long-term suppression of a memory is a sure fire way of permanently erasing it.

The study authors, led by Gerd Thomas Waldhauser, from Lund University in Sweden, say that mastering the technique could be useful for people who suffer from depression or post traumatic stress disorder.

Mr Waldhauser, a researcher at Lund University, said "We know that 'forgotten' or repressed feelings often manifest themselves as physiological reactions. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/8620360/Selective-memory-does-exist-say-scientists.html

Satanists jailed, abuse/heart disease, Jeffs new trial, cult sex abuse, trauma

describes crimes - Russian Satanists jailed for gruesome ritual murders From: NewsCore July 27, 2010 A GANG of six Russians Satanists have been handed jail sentences of up to 20 years for ritually killing and then dismembering four teenagers in a forest.

The six - all teenagers at the time - reportedly also ate the body parts of their victims in a wooded area outside the city of Yaroslavl, about 320 kilometres northeast of Moscow.
The group was found guilty of "murdering four people with the aim of carrying out an initiation ritual into a sect and of desecrating the bodies of the dead," the Yaroslavl regional court said in a statement. The group, four of whom were under 18 at the time, killed the four teenagers in June 2008, prosecutors said....The accused were found guilty of murder, while four were also found guilty of desecrating the victims' bodies. The longest sentence of 20 years went to the man named as the group's leader, Nikolai Ogolobnyak.

Link Between Childhood Physical Abuse and Heart Disease
ScienceDaily (July 23, 2010) — Childhood physical abuse is associated with significantly elevated rates of heart disease in adulthood, according to new findings by University of Toronto researchers, published in this month's issue of the journal Child Abuse & Neglect. "Individuals who reported they had been physically abused as children had 45 per cent higher odds of heart disease than their peers who had not been abused, despite the fact we had adjusted for most of the known risk factors for heart disease," says Professor Esme Fuller-Thomson, who holds the Sandra Rotman Chair at U of T's Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work and Department of Family and Community Medicine.

Utah court reverses polygamist leader convictions
By JENNIFER DOBNER, Associated Press Writer Jennifer Dobner, Jul 27, 2010 SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Supreme Court on Tuesday reversed the convictions of polygamist leader Warren Jeffs and ordered a new trial, saying a jury received incorrect instructions before considering his role in the 2001 nuptials of a 14-year-old girl and her 19-year-old cousin. Jeffs, 54, was convicted in 2007 of two counts of first-degree felony rape as an accomplice. He is serving two consecutive terms of five years to life in the Utah State Prison....Jeffs is head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The sect, whose estimated 10,000 members live mostly on the Utah-Arizona state line, practices polygamy in marriages arranged by church leaders. Some marriages have involved underage girls to older men.

Jeffs performed the religious marriage of Elissa Wall and Allen Steed in a Caliente, Nev., motel and later counseled Wall to be obedient and give her "mind, body and soul" to her husband in an effort to make an unhappy marriage work.

During the trial and later in her book, "Stolen Innocence," Wall said she objected to the marriage and was forced into sexual relations with her husband....In its ruling Tuesday, the court agreed with defense attorneys who argued that jurors should not have been told to decide whether Wall's marital relations were consensual based on Jeffs' actions and his role as her religious leader. That essentially equates Jeffs with Steed — the person who allegedly has had nonconsensual sex. Justices said prosecutors were wrong to make that leap.

Michael Lyons may have raped dozens more women
Police fear dozens more women around the world have been raped by cult leader Michael Lyons. 26 Jul 2010 Officers said many victims were too scared to come forward after falling into the clutches of his intimidating group. They said Lyons, known in spiritualist circles as Mohan Singh, was a calculating criminal masquerading as a healer.

Lyons was jailed for 10 years yesterday after being convicted of raping one woman and assaulting another. However police say many more women around the world may also have been victims....Detective Sergeant Nicholas Giles, who pursued Lyons, said officers liaised with colleagues at the FBI as the net closed around their suspect. He said Lyons travelled widely between London, Paris, Miami and New York, spending only a few months in each place. Internet campaigners claim to have drawn up a list of 20 potential victims in New York alone. Mr Giles said the complex and unusual case created many difficulties, including persuading the jury how dangerous Lyons was. He said: ''This is all about control, brainwashing, a cult. It is not someone with a mask jumping out of a bush. It is very hard to prove. ''We had to bring family members, people who have lost people to the cult, from America.''

The Trauma Myth: The Truth about the Sexual Abuse of Children a flawed book

The Trauma Myth: The Truth about the Sexual Abuse of Children - and Its Aftermath reviewed by Philip M. Coons
excerpts:

"Clancy's polemic against the trauma theory of clinicians and researchers who seek to understand and treat sexual abuse victims as adults has produced a flawed book."

"Beginning in the mid-1990s, Susan Clancy, now a psychology associate at Harvard, interviewed over 200 adults about memory and childhood sexual abuse experiences. Two-thirds of her interviewees were women. She solicited her subjects through a newspaper ad in the Boston Globe and other Boston-area newspapers. Unfortunately she does not completely describe her methodology, and her sample appears to have been biased."

"Not a clinician herself, Clancy takes a narrow diagnostic view of trauma, the one found in the 2000 edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. According to the DSM, a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder requires that an individual's response to a traumatic event involve "intense fear, helplessness, or horror." She seems to have missed the note explaining that in children discomfort "may be expressed by disorganized or agitated."

"Clancy and others have found that it is not uncommon for victims to forget the sexual abuse. Despite her findings, however, Clancy attacks the idea of what she calls repressed memory. She incorrectly observes that the more traumatic the sexual abuse events are, the less likely the victim will be to forget. This mistaken opinion has previously been refuted by Lenore Terr's elegant studies involving traumatized children. Jennifer Freyd, in her 1998 book, Betrayal Trauma: The Logic of Forgetting Child hood Abuse, takes a much wider view of the effects of trauma on children and cogently explains how sexual abuse leads to distrust, shame and guilt in children and adults. She also explains how and why children may forget their sexual abuse experiences and later recover their memories in adulthood behavior."

"Although Clancy includes excerpts from some of her interviews, her book contains no figures or tables tabulating her findings; nor does she present many of the results from the experimental clinical interviews and rating scales that she used. Thus far, Clancy's study on the effects of childhood sexual abuse has not appeared in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.Clancy argues that current prevention and treatment methods based on the trauma model do not work, but she appears to be mistaken. David Finkelhor's 2008 book Childhood Victimization: Violence, Crime, and Abuse in the Lives of Young People, which she lists in chapter notes, mentions that childhood sexual abuse has declined dramatically since the mid-1990s, and just recently a massive new federal study, the National Incidence Study of Child Abuse and Neglect, showed a 38 percent drop in the number of sexually abused children since 1993." http://www.christiancentury.org/article.lasso?id=8378

Judge allows repressed memory evidence in sex case

AP 1/22/10 INDIANAPOLIS - A judge will allow a man to testify about the sexual abuse he claims a priest committed even though the man repressed the memories for decades. Marion Superior Court Judge David Dreyer has ordered the case to go forward against the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Dreyer says expert testimony on repressed memory is reliable enough to let a jury decide its credibility. The plaintiff contends that, as a boy, he was repeatedly molested by former priest Harry Monroe at an Indianapolis parish. Plaintiff Attorney Pat Noaker (noh-AKE'-er) says the decision conforms with similar cases across the country. http://www.jconline.com/article/20100122/NEWS09/100122010/Judge-allows-repressed-memory-evidence-in-sex-case

Shanley repressed memory Massachusetts hearing

`Repressed memory' at issue in defrocked priest's appeal - By Jonathan Saltzman Globe Staff / September 10, 2009 Defrocked priest Paul R. Shanley, one of the key figures in Boston's clergy sex abuse scandal, plans to challenge his rape and indecent assault convictions before the state's highest court today....The prosecutors say "dissociative amnesia'' is recognized as a legitimate disorder by many in the mental health field, including the American Psychiatric Association. Merely because specialists "may not be unanimous about dissociative amnesia does not rule out its validity,'' prosecutors wrote in their brief....But under cross-examination, she agreed that people can forget traumatic events and remember them later. Loftus is among those who signed the brief supporting Shanley's appeal. Shanley's lawyer said in his brief that no appellate court in Massachusetts has considered whether repressed memory is a valid, scientifically accepted phenomenon. If so, the high court's ruling in the case could have significant repercussions. Leone said recently that the concept of recovered memory "by victims of abuse has been accepted by both the scientific and legal communities, as well as the jury that convicted Mr. Shanley of child rape after hearing the full evidence in this case.'' He said the verdict was just and expressed confidence that it will be upheld.

Defrocked priest Shanley to challenge use of repressed memories in sexual abuse trial By Denise Lavoie/Associated Press - Daily News Tribune Boston - 9/10/09 Defrocked priest Paul Shanley, one of the central figures in the clergy sex abuse scandal, was convicted after a 27-year-old man tearfully described how the popular priest used to pull him out of catechism classes and rape him, beginning when he was just 6 years old....
Now Shanley is challenging his conviction based on an ongoing debate in the psychiatric community over the validity and reliability of repressed memories. The highest court in Massachusetts will hear Shanley's appeal today, at 9 a.m., at John Adams Courthouse, One Pemberton Square, Boston....The clergy sex abuse crisis erupted in Boston in 2002 after church records were made public showing that church officials had reports of priests molesting children, but kept the complaints secret, shuffling some priests from parish to parish rather than removing them. Shanley, now 78, was known in the 1960s and 1970s as a "street priest" who reached out to Boston's troubled youth. Internal records showed that church officials were aware of sexual abuse complaints against him as early as 1967....A wave of lawsuits led to massive settlements, including a record $660 million settlement in 2007 with more than 500 alleged victims in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and an $85 million settlement in 2003 with more than 550 victims in the Archdiocese of Boston. All told, the U.S. Roman Catholic Church has paid more than $2.6 billion in settlements and related expenses since 1950, according to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The victim in the Shanley case received a $500,000 settlement from the Boston archdiocese about a year before Shanley went on trial in the criminal case. Prosecutors originally charged Shanley with sexually abusing four men when they were children in Newton during the 1980s. They later dropped three of the men from the case. All four men said they recovered memories of the abuse years later. During Shanley's 2005 trial, the remaining victim broke down and cried as he testified in graphic detail that Shanley raped and groped him in the church bathroom, the rectory, the confessional and the pews from age 6 to 12.
"It felt awful," he testified. "He told me nobody would ever believe me if I told anybody." Shanley was convicted of child rape and indecent assault and battery. He is now serving a 12- to 15-year prison sentence. A judge last year rejected Shanley's request for a new trial, finding that the theory of repressed-recovered memories, though controversial, is "generally accepted by the relevant scientific community of mental health professionals."....others believe repressed memories are well-documented among victims of traumatic events. "Holocaust victims, people who have been to war - the list goes on and on in showing the coping mechanisms to protect the mind from overwhelming fear and tragedy," said Wendy Murphy, a Boston attorney who is a director of The Leadership Council, a nonprofit organization of scientists, attorneys and educators. Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone, whose office prosecuted Shanley, said in a statement that he believes the theory will stand up to Shanley's legal challenge. "The concept of recovered memory by victims of abuse has been accepted by both the scientific and legal communities, as well as the jury who convicted Mr. Shanley of child rape after hearing the full evidence in this case," Leone said http://www.dailynewstribune.com/homepage/x302143055/Defrocked-priest-Shanley-to-challenge-use-of-repressed-memories-in-sexual-abuse-trial

summary of case

Shanley was accused of sexual abuse in the 1960's, the 1970's, the 1980's and the 1990's. His church personnel records indicated he was transferred from parish to parish despite allegations of abuse. The Boston Herald (4/9/02) printed that Shanley "spoke in favor of sex between men and boys at a formative 1978 meeting in Boston of the “Man Boy Lovers of North America” and that he "admitted openly to raping and sodomizing minors when confronted by church investigators under Boston’s two past archbishops, Humberto Cardinal Medeiros and Law."

There is very strong scientific evidence that recovered memories exist. This has been shown in many scientific studies. The content of recovered memories have fairly high corroboration rates.

Paul Shanley - Summary of Case: Shanley’s career had four stages. He spent the 1960s as a junior parish priest at St. Patrick’s in Stoneham (a suburb north of Boston) and at St. Francis of Assisi in Braintree (a working class suburb south of Boston). In the 1970s he was a “street priest” designated as the Boston archdiocese’s minister to “alienated youth.” In the 1980s he was a priest and pastor at St. Jean’s in the working class Nonantum section of Newton, west of Boston. And in the 1990s he was a fill-in priest in the San Bernardino diocese and an acting director of Leo House, a Catholic hostel in the New York archdiocese. He is accused of sexual abuse in each decade. His alleged victims were mostly male, but some women have come forward. Ages of the alleged victims at the time of the abuse range from 6 to 26, and the alleged offenses range from fondling to forced oral sex and anal rape. http://www.projecttruth2.com/Paul%20Richard%20Shanley.htm

Ex-Priest Is Sentenced to 12 to 15 Years for Sex Abuse in Massachusetts By AP 2/15/05 “Boston (AP) Defrocked priest Paul Shanley, whose crimes shook the Roman Catholic Church, was sentenced to 12 to 15 years in prison on child rape charges….Shanley became a central figure in the sex scandal in Boston after plaintiffs’ attorneys forced the church to release his personnel records. The documents indicated he was transferred from parish to parish despite allegations of abuse.”"

"Damning internal church documents on the Rev. Paul R. Shanley make clear that the Archdiocese of Boston knew the priest was a child rapist yet devoted large sums of money and decades of personnel resources to cover up his crimes." “The documents also show that Shanley spoke in favor of sex between men and boys at a formative 1978 meeting in Boston of the “Man Boy Lovers of North America,” a precursor of the North American Man-Boy Love Association, or NAMBLA.” “Shanley admitted openly to raping and sodomizing minors when confronted by church investigators under Boston’s two past archbishops, Humberto Cardinal Medeiros and Law.” from Cover up: Documents: Archdiocese knew priest was a rapist - by Tom Mashberg and Robin Washington - 4/9/02 Boston Herald

Debate Over Repressed Memories

Debate Over Repressed Memories - ScienceDaily (July 8, 2009) - Fueling the debate over the controversial psychiatric disorder known as dissociative amnesia, or repressed memory, Brown University political scientist Ross Cheit is challenging claims by two Harvard University psychiatrists. At issue is how to prove whether the memories of trauma, such as childhood sexual abuse, can be repressed and then resurface later in life.

Cheit's paper, co-authored by Rachel E. Goldsmith of Reed College and Mary E. Wood of University of Oregon, appears in the current issue of Journal of Trauma & Dissociation. Cheit is disputing a 2006 contest by Harvard University psychiatrists Harrison G. Pope and James Hudson, both well-known skeptics of repressed memory....

Cheit said he repeatedly contacted Pope and the journal editors shortly after the article was published, requesting the data from Pope and raising questions about the contest methodology. Several months later, Pope and his team acknowledged on their Web site that the submitted example of Nina, a 1786 opera by the French composer Nicolas Dalayrac, fulfilled the contest criteria and that the $1,000 prize had been awarded. However, Cheit said, they never published a correction, addendum, or retraction of their original article and its conclusions....

In the current Journal of Trauma & Dissociation article, Cheit calls Pope's entire contest "a sham," accusing Pope's team of failing to provide a thorough account of all submissions and the process by which they were rejected, offering highly questionable literary analysis, and including several misrepresentations of the state of the science regarding memory for trauma.

Cheit and his team offer additional literary examples and summarize some data that Pope and his team did not consider. They conclude, "Literature can provide important information about human experience, but it cannot prove or disprove traumatic amnesia any more than it can prove or disprove the existence of bacteria or dragons. Literary passages and modern scientific data do reveal descriptions and data, respectively, that depict dissociative amnesia as a naturally occurring traumatic sequela." http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/07/090707170958.htm
