Fran's Day Care Case Information - Keller Case

Fran's Day Care Case Information - Keller Case
November 27, 2013 case update:

Fran Keller, a former Austin day care owner was freed on bond Tuesday November 26, 2013 after 21 years in prison for sexual abuse of children in her care. Dan Keller her husband, who was also convicted of sexual abuse, is expected to be freed the following week.

The Travis County district attorney’s office agreed to not oppose the Kellers’ release on bond. They  acknowledged that a key prosecution witness (a doctor who provided the only physical evidence of abuse in this case) had recanted his testimony as a mistake based on inexperience in pediatric exams.

Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg stated that “Given the crucial nature of (that) testimony in a child sexual abuse case, I agreed that there is a reasonable likelihood that his false testimony affected the judgment of the jury and violated Frances Keller’s right to a fair trial.” (Radio KLBJ news article)

Lehmberg also stated: “The Court of Criminal Appeals will review both cases. No further action or decisions on the case will be made until that review is finalized.” (Daily Mail news article)

Lostprophets' Ian Watkins Admits Rape Attempts
Sky News 11/26/13
Former Lostprophets frontman Ian Watkins has admitted a string of sex offences, including two charges of attempting to rape a baby.

The singer had faced 24 sex-offence charges but pleaded guilty to 11 of them at the last minute, nine of which were unchanged and two of attempted rape of an infant, which were downgraded from actual rape.

The charges included sexually touching a one-year-old and encouraging a mother to abuse her own child during a webcam chat. Watkins also admitted possessing and making child abuse images as well as being behind the plot to rape the child.

Watkins, 36, from Pontypridd, south Wales, insisted he had no memory of what would have been key video evidence at the trial showing him abusing his victim, the court heard.

Prosecuting QC Chris Clee said camcorder footage shot in a London hotel room showed Watkins perform a sex act on the child. Computer analysts found the footage had been uploaded to an online storage facility....

The court also heard details of a plot to turn babies in subservient sex slaves using hard drugs....

Mind-control survivors claim US Government tortures children

....According to survivors, MKULTRA human experimentation involves using children as sex slaves, exposing them to radiation, drugs, hypnosis, plus mental and physical abuse including dislocating joints; food, water and sensory deprivation, electroshock and implantation of electronic devices to further access victims throughout their lives.

Congress supposedly shut down the program in 1964, though many survivors responding to the 2007 Extreme Abuse Surveys might disagree.

Silvio Berlusconi was 'bunga bunga' ringmaster, says court document , Man charged with murder, Lambeth 'slaves' rescue: The shocking and distressing cases of modern day slavery

Silvio Berlusconi was 'bunga bunga' ringmaster, says court document  Document explaining reasons behind Italian ex-PM's conviction says there is proof he had sexual relations with 17-year-old Reuters in Milan, Thursday 21 November 2013

Silvio Berlusconi was 'bunga bunga' ringmaster, says court document Document explaining reasons behind Italian ex-PM's conviction says there is proof he had sexual relations with 17-year-old
Silvio Berlusconi was the ringmaster of "bunga bunga" sex parties at his luxurious villa near Milan, giving the go-ahead for young women to perform pole dances and stripteases, according to a court document.

The former Italian prime minister, who faces potential expulsion from his Senate seat next week after receiving a final conviction for tax fraud in a separate case, was handed a seven-year jail sentence in June for abuse of office and paying for sex with a minor during the parties.

In a document released on Thursday explaining the reasons behind the conviction, the court said there was sufficient proof that the 77-year-old had sexual relations with the former nightclub dancer Karima el-Mahroug, who was 17 at the time, in exchange for money and jewellery.
It said Berlusconi directed women to perform and dance erotically during the parties.

"It is proven that the director of the young women's sexual performances was Berlusconi himself," the court said.
Berlusconi has described the evenings as "elegant dinners" and is appealing against the verdict. He will not have to serve any jail time for the conviction unless it is upheld after two appeals....

Evidence also shows Berlusconi was aware that Mahroug, also known by her stage name Ruby the Heartstealer, was under 18 at the time, below the legal age limit for prostitution in Italy, the court found....

The 78-year-old is alleged to have abused youngsters in hospitals around Aylesbury, Bucks, including Stoke Mandeville where serial pervert Savile targeted patients for sex attacks during his time as a fundraiser there.

Dr Salmon worked at Stoke Mandeville in the 80s. He was hailed by Diana for organising a 1987 trip to Disney World in Florida for 300 disabled kids.

The sex attacks he is accused of are said to have happened between 1972 and 1985.

Accused molester seeks deal for reduced sentence

Accused molester seeks deal for reduced sentence
By Peter Schworm   Globe Staff   November 20, 2013

WOBURN - A lawyer for accused serial child molester John Burbine proposed in court Wednesday that his client be castrated in exchange for a sharply reduced prison sentence, but said prosecutors rejected the idea and were preparing for trial.

William Barabino, who represents Burbine, said he was seeking a plea agreement that would limit Burbine’s sentence to a maximum of 15 years if he agreed to undergo the procedure. But prosecutors, who are seeking a life sentence for Burbine, said they were not open to a plea, Barabino said....

Burbine is accused of raping and sexually abusing 13 children that he gained access to through his wife’s unlicensed day care business between 2010 and 2012. The youngest victim was eight days old. Authorities say most of the assaults took place in the victims’ homes....

John Burbine is also facing charges that he raped a boy in Saugus on several occasions from 1990 to 1994. He was convicted and received a six-month suspended sentence for sexually molesting three young brothers in the late 1980s.

Barabino said he was seeking to negotiate a plea because he is “realistic about the charges” and said Burbine has never disputed them....

Girl sexually assaulted by priest after seeking food: witness
Eric Dejaeger on trial for dozens of sexual abuse charges dating to the 1970s and 80s

CBC News Posted: Nov 20, 2013

A witness testifying at the trial of Eric Dejaeger in Iqaluit told the court on Wednesday that the accused sexually assaulted her after she sought food at the church.

The 41-year-old woman said her family in Igloolik, Nunavut, was sometimes hungry for days at a time between 1978 and 1982, the years when Eric Dejaeger was the priest in the remote community.

The Roman Catholic priest, 66, is on trial for dozens of sexual abuse charges, relating to incidents alleged to have occurred while Dejaeger was in Igloolik....

The witness this morning testified that she was sexually assaulted numerous times by Dejaeger. She told the court how her grandmother, who was raising her, often sent her to the church for a meal.

The witness said that after one such meal, when she was eight years old, Dejaeger took her upstairs and raped her.

She says she was bleeding after the assault....

The witness says she told her grandmother about the assault, but she says the woman didn't believe her and beat her.

She says she stopped going to school after the assault so she didn't have to face Dejaeger during after-class Bible study....

Google, Microsoft Block Child Abuse Search Results

Google, Microsoft Block Child Abuse Search Results
LONDON November 18, 2013 (AP)
By SYLVIA HUI Associated Press

Google and Microsoft have introduced software that makes it harder for users to search for child abuse material online, the companies said in a joint announcement Monday.

Writing ahead of a British summit on Internet safety, Google's executive chairman Eric Schmidt said his company has fine-tuned Google Search to clean up results for over 100,000 search terms. When users type in queries that may be related to child sexual abuse, they will find no results that link to illegal content.

"We will soon roll out these changes in more than 150 languages, so the impact will be truly global," Schmidt wrote in the Daily Mail newspaper.

The restrictions are being launched in Britain and other English-speaking countries first. Similar changes are being brought out on Microsoft's Bing search engine.

The two companies are sharing picture detection technology to identify child abuse photographs whenever they appear on their systems, and Google is also testing technology to identify and remove illegal videos.

Other measures include warnings at the top of Google search for more than 13,000 queries to make it clear that child abuse is illegal....

Mormon church denies lawsuit's claims of sex abuse coverup

Mormon church denies lawsuit's claims of sex abuse coverup
Fri Nov 1, 2013 by Matthew Umstead

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in a statement released Wednesday adamantly denied claims made in a lawsuit that it covered up sexual abuse of 12 children in Berkeley County by a member who has since been excommunicated and imprisoned.

The lawsuit filed Sept. 16 names Mormon church officials and excommunicated member Christopher Michael Jensen and his parents as defendants. It was filed in Berkeley County Circuit Court on behalf of five families and 12 children among them.

"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has zero tolerance for abuse of any kind," the church said in its statement, which was released by Martinsburg attorney William J. Powell, who is representing the church in this case....

The lawsuit alleges the church was repeatedly put on notice and/or had knowledge of Jensen's "predatory acts," but actively covered up the abuse and assisted him "in committing further unspeakable acts, by enabling (Jensen) to babysit for and live with other church families with young children."....

"The church, in short, thwarted the protections that would have been triggered by reporting the abuses and provided (Jensen) the opportunity to abuse more and more children, which he did. This pattern continued for over five years, until (Jensen) was finally indicted in 2012," the lawsuit said.

Child abuse report reveals a betrayal of trust 'beyond comprehension', Jimmy Savile's ex-flatmate and driver will deny sex offences, court hears

Child abuse report reveals a betrayal of trust 'beyond comprehension'
'Children were betrayed by trusted figures in organisations of high standing and suffered unimaginable harm,' says report

David Marr, Tuesday 12 November 2013

“We have called our report Betrayal of Trust,” said Victorian MP Georgie Crozier as she presented the findings of the parliamentary inquiry into the handling of child abuse by religious and other non-government organisations.

“Children were betrayed by trusted figures in organisations of high standing and suffered unimaginable harm,” she said.

“Parents of these children experienced a betrayal beyond comprehension. And the community was betrayed by the failure of organisations to protect children in their care.”

The report’s criticism of the Catholic church is unsparing. Its recommendations are radical. If adopted they would strip the Catholic church of its virtual immunity in the courts and compel religious leaders of all faiths to report child abuse to the police.

The Victorian premier, Denis Napthine, has fallen short of accepting the committee’s recommendations but describes them as “a strong basis for reforms that will make a real difference for the future”....

“The Catholic church,” she said, “minimised and trivialised the problem; contributed to abuse not being disclosed, or not being responded to at all prior to 1990; ensured that the Victorian community remained uninformed of the abuse; and ensured that perpetrators were not held accountable with the tragic result being that children continued to be abused....

Project Spade, massive international child porn bust centred on Toronto, nets 348 arrests in ‘horrific sexual acts’
Diana Mehta, Canadian Press 14/11/13

TORONTO — At least 386 children have been rescued from sexual exploitation and hundreds of suspects arrested in a sweeping child pornography investigation that began with a Toronto man, police revealed Thursday.

“It’s a first for the magnitude of the victims saved,” said Insp Joanna Beaven-Desjardins, of the force’s Sex Crimes Unit. “The amount of arrests internationally, also a first.”

At least 348 people were arrested around the world as part of Project Spade, including 50 in Ontario and 58 from other parts of Canada....

School teachers, doctors, nurses, pastors and foster parents are among those facing charges in the wide-ranging operation that can be traced back to a business operating out of Toronto’s west end, police said.

“Its success has been extraordinary,” Beaven-Desjardins said of the investigation which spanned more than 50 countries....

Police allege Brian Way, 42, had been running an “exploitation movie, production and distribution company” called Azov Films since 2005, and had made more than $4-million from the business....

Through his company, the man would allegedly contract people to create child porn videos involving kids, largely boys, between the ages of five and 12. Many of those videos were allegedly shot in Ukraine and Romania in apartments, dingy saunas and backyards.

Police allege the videos were then distributed from Toronto — through the mail and the Internet — to customers around the world....

Police say the sheer amount of images and videos seized in their investigation — 45 terabytes worth — was staggering....

“Officers located hundreds of thousands of images and videos detailing horrific sexual acts against very young children, some of the worst that they have ever viewed.”

Satanic Ritual Murder Sentencing Postponed for 2014, Paper Says Lost in the Mall study's theory and methodology are not reliable under either Frye or Daubert standards

Satanic Ritual Murder Sentencing Postponed for 2014
By Mara Ispas  SA Breaking News – Fri, Nov 8, 2013

Johannesburg – The two men found guilty of the satanic ritual murder of Kirsty Theologo will only be sentenced in February 2014, announced Judge Geraldine Borchers on Friday.

The judge postponed the sentencing because of an operation she was scheduled for, and said she could only continue the trial on 11 February 2014....

Wagner and Harwood reportedly killed Theologo because they wanted to sell their souls to the devil.

By: Wendy Murphy, JD; Megan Mitchell, JD (expected 2013); Alexa Sardina, PhD (expected 2014)

Study Name and citation : Loftus, E. & Pickrell, J. E. (1995). The Formation of False Memories. Psychiatric Annals, 25(12), 720 - 725. (Commonly known as the "Lost in the Mall" study).

Theory Advanced by the Study: False childhood memories can be implanted into adults by repeatedly stating the false memory as true.

Conclusion: The study's theory and methodology are not reliable under either Frye or Daubert standards....

For example, any attempt to use the Lost in the Mall study to prove or disprove that a person is telling the truth about sexual abuse should be unsuccessful simply because memories about getting lost in a mall have nothing to do with memories of being sexually or physically violated.

Put another way, the capacity to make a person falsely believe they were once lost in a mall does not "fit" and bears no relevance in a dispute over whether a person can be made to falsely believe they were sexually abused as a child....

While other studies come close to replicating the methods used in Lost in the Mall, the results themselves have never been replicated. This is important because replication of results is what makes the methodology and statistical significance of the original experiment reliable.3

Lost in the Mall fails the reliability test under this factor for two reasons. (1) It has not been repeated using the same methodology4 and (2) similar studies have obtained widely varied results....

The fact that an error rate was never calculated indicates an attempt to avoid publishing unwanted results.12 An attempt to account for this glaring anomaly is apparent because the author writes about "clarity ratings" as a seeming alternative to an error rate. This raises even greater concerns and adds nothing to an assessment of reliability because "clarity rating" is a meaningless term under Daubert....

Jimmy Savile: IPCC say Greater Manchester Police in the clear over complaints  11 Nov 2013

Police had 17 reports by women from the region claiming abuse by the DJ during the 1960s

A watchdog says it won’t take action against Greater Manchester Police over the way the force handled complaints about Jimmy Savile.

When the DJ was exposed as a serial sex abuser last year, some 17 women came forward and reported to GMP that they had been molested by Savile from the 1960s.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission launched an investigation amid reports that police officers elsewhere in the country helped Savile cover up his crimes.

Now the watchdog has announced it will conduct a further enquiry into a West Yorkshire Police inspector who ‘acted on behalf of’ Savile inappropriately by contacting Surrey Police ahead of a police interview in 2009....

Pervert Jimmy Savile manipulated BBC security staff so they would allow girls into his dressing room

Handwritten message reveals how the twisted celebrity deliberately cultivated a phony friendship with doormen at the corporation

Serial pervert Jimmy Savile frequently manipulated BBC security staff so they would allow girls into his dressing room.

A handwritten message, published by the Mirror today, reveals how the twisted celebrity deliberately cultivated a phony friendship with doormen at the corporation so they would never question his requests.

The sickeningly chummy note, addressed to “BBC security friends” and signed with his customary smiling face drawn inside an expansive J at the start of his name, was scrawled on notepaper from Stoke Mandeville hospital where he was a fundraiser.

A BBC insider said: “It perfectly illustrates the position of power Savile had.  “He flattered and made friends with security staff and this enabled him to carry out his horrendous attacks.

"He even wrote this on headed notepaper of the National Spinal Injuries Centre. This was not unusual.”

Savile used BBC studios to abuse dozens of girls and young women....

Michelle Knight wanted to kiss the ground after rescue from Castro 'hellhole', More police officers to be investigated over link with paedophile Jimmy Savile

Michelle Knight wanted to kiss the ground after rescue from Castro 'hellhole'
by Catherine E. Shoichet, CNN   Wed November 6, 2013

(CNN) -- Michelle Knight squeezes her eyes shut and cries as she listens to the 911 call that led police to rescue her from the house where Ariel Castro held her hostage for more than a decade.

In the recording, fellow captive Amanda Berry begs police to come quickly, before Castro gets home.

"Help me, I'm Amanda Berry," she says. "I've been kidnapped and I've been missing for 10 years. And I'm here, I'm free now."

That frantic call six months ago finally brought authorities to the Cleveland home where Berry, Knight and Gina DeJesus had been Castro's prisoners.

The moment when police rescued them, Knight recalled in an interview broadcast Wednesday on the syndicated "Dr. Phil" talk show, was a "roller coaster of mixed emotion."

"I wanted to kiss the ground that I was walking on and thank God for letting me get out of that hellhole," Knight told host Dr. Phil McGraw....

More police officers to be investigated over link with paedophile Jimmy Savile

MORE police officers are set to be investigated over their links to paedophile Jimmy Savile, we can reveal.
By Jonathan Corke Published 10th November 2013

Ex-West Yorkshire Police inspector Mick Starkey, 61, is already under investigation over claims he acted “on behalf” of Savile during another force’s child sex abuse probe.

But today we can disclose further officers from West Yorkshire – Savile’s local force – may be quizzed.

We have learned that, as well as passing the Starkey allegations to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), the force has made another referral.

The IPCC told us it involves “a number of different officers” who had contact with the prolific child sex offender.

A recent review by WYP found at least eight former or serving officers had attended a Friday Morning Club which the pervert held at his penthouse apartment in Roundhay, Leeds.

It established that most were invited by Starkey or another officer, known as “Sergeant B”.

Four of the eight were said to have attended just once, while the other four “attended on a regular basis over a number of years”....

As we revealed last year, Savile had pals in several forces, including the Metropolitan Police.

Last week the IPCC asked Sussex Police to refer the conduct of two detectives over their handling of an indecent assault claim against him in 2008.

It is claimed police told Savile’s victim his lawyers would make “mincemeat” of her in court.

The probe – Operation Baseball – ended with Savile evading justice.

The IPCC said it has requested further information from the Met and Surrey Police about their dealings with Savile.

Surrey’s two-year investigation into Savile also ended in him escaping justice over three claims....

Military, CIA Required Docs to Aid Torture, Rape Laws Offer Little Protection

Military, CIA Required Docs to Aid Torture
Nov 8, 2013  By Chris Kaiser

Since Sept. 11, 2001, military and intelligence health professionals have participated in the abuse and torture of suspected terrorists held in prisons outside the U.S., a comprehensive new report said.

And they did so because the Department of Defense (DoD) and the CIA "required [them] to act contrary to their professional obligations," according to the report.

Those are two of eight findings included in the 200-page report, "Ethics Abandoned: Medical Professionalism and Detainee Abuse in the War on Terror." The report is based on 2 years of review of records in the public domain by the 19-member Task Force on Preserving Medical Professionalism in National Security Detention Centers....

Medical, Military, and Ethics Experts Say Health Professionals Designed and Participated in Cruel, Inhumane, and Degrading Treatment and Torture of Detainees; Seek Policies To Assure Conformance With Ethical Principles

New York, NY — An independent panel of military, ethics, medical, public health, and legal experts today charged that U.S. military and intelligence agencies directed doctors and psychologists working in U.S. military detention centers to violate standard ethical principles and medical standards to avoid infliction of harm. The Task Force on Preserving Medical Professionalism in National Security Detention Centers (see attached) concludes that since September 11, 2001, the Department of Defense (DoD) and CIA improperly demanded that U.S. military and intelligence agency health professionals collaborate in intelligence gathering and security practices in a way that inflicted severe harm on detainees in U.S. custody.

These practices included “designing, participating in, and enabling torture and cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment” of detainees, according to the report. Although the DoD has taken steps to address some of these practices in recent years, including instituting a committee to review medical ethics concerns at Guantanamo Bay Prison, the Task Force says the changed roles for health professionals and anemic ethical standards adopted within the military remain in place....

Ethics Abandoned: Medical Professionalism and Detainee Abuse in the “War on Terror” A task force report funded
by IMAP/OSF November 2013  Institute on Medicine As A Profession  Columbia University, College of Physicians and surgeons 630 West 168th street P&S Box 11, New York, NY 10032

The 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United states resulted in U.S. government- approved harsh treatment and torture of detainees suspected of having information about terrorism.1 Military and intelligence-agency physicians and other health professionals, particularly psychologists, became involved in the design and administration of that harsh treatment and torture—in clear conflict with established international and national professional principles and laws.2

In 2010, the institute on Medicine as a Profession (IMAP) and the open society Foundations convened the task Force on Preserving Medical Professionalism in national security detention centers (Task Force) to examine what is known about the involvement of health professionals in infliction of torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment of detainees in U.S. custody and how such deviation from professional standards and ethically proper conduct occurred, including actions that were taken by the U.S. department of defense (dod) and the ciA to direct this conduct....

The Task Force has determined that actions taken by the U.S. government immediately following 9/11 included three key elements affecting the role of health professionals in detention centers:

1. The declaration that as part of a “war on terror,” individuals captured and detained in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and elsewhere were “unlawful combatants” who did not qualify as prisoners of war under the Geneva conventions. Additionally, the U.S. department of Justice approved of interrogation methods recognized domestically and internationally as constituting torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.

2. The DOD and CIA’s development of internal mechanisms to direct the participation of military and intelligence-agency physicians and psychologists in abusive interrogation and breaking of hunger strikes. Although the involvement of health professionals in human rights  violations against detainees progressed differently in the military and the CIA, both facilitated that involvement in similar ways, including undermining health professionals’ allegiances to established principles of professional ethics and conduct through reinterpretation of those principles.

3. The secrecy surrounding detention policies that prevailed until 2004–2005, when leaked documents began to reveal those policies. secrecy allowed the unlawful and unethical interrogation and mistreatment of detainees to proceed unfettered by established ethical principles and standards of conduct as well as societal, professional, and nongovernmental commentary and legal review.

Rape Laws Offer Little Protection
Nov 8, 2013 By Rita Buckley , Contributing Writer, MedPage Today

Since 2000, the United Nations Security Council has issued nine sexual-violence-related resolutions to seemingly little effect. One in three women worldwide have still been raped or sexually assaulted, and 65 countries report more than 250,000 rapes and attempted rapes to the United Nations each year.

These figures don't even account for the vast majority of rapes, which go unreported, Akiyode continued. A 2007 government document in England found that between 75% and 95% of rapes will never come to light, and the American Medical Association calls rape the single most under-reported violent crime.

In many nations, rape is rarely reported due to social stigma and cultural norms and traditions, such as 'honor killings' of victims, she pointed out. According to the United Nations, 2008 rape figures recorded by police worldwide varied between 0.1 per 100,000 in Egypt to 26.6 per 100,000 in the United States to 91.6 per 100,000 in Lesotho.

In the U.S., one in three American women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime, Akiyode told MedPage Today, adding that women are 10 times more likely than men to be victims of rape and nine times more likely than non-victims to attempt suicide.

Nor is the situation improving, she said. In Nigeria, only 18% or so of rape victims contact police. Egypt's interior ministry claim of 20,000 rapes each year (or 0.1 rapes per 100,000 individuals) is belied by conservative estimates of 200,000 annual rapes....

Mixed feelings over Theologo verdict 2013-11-07

Johannesburg - Two men were convicted of the satanic murder of Kirsty Theologo on Thursday while a young woman escaped jail, evoking mixed feelings outside court.

A fourth accused, Harvey Isha, was acquitted of all charges.

Linden Wagner and Robin Harwood were found guilty in the high court sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court of the assault, murder and attempted murder of Theologo, 18, and her friend who was 14-years-old old at the time....

Wagner had told the court that something had come over him when he attacked his friend Theologo.

He admitted that he had intended to sell his soul that night in return for power but nothing had happened.

He gave a detailed account of how a five-pointed star was drawn at the place where the girls were to be sacrificed. A fire was made and a bible was thrown into it. He and some of his co-accused then cut their hands and dripped their blood into the blaze.

Some of them had planned to eat Theologo’s flesh, drink her blood and burn her body.

Wagner said his and the other ritual partakers souls were meant to be received by the beast referred to in a Bible passage in the book of Revelations....

Theologo family calls for tough sentences
JOHANNESBURG – Kirsty Theologo’s family on Thursday said while they’re happy two of the four people accused of killing her have been convicted of murder, they’re feeling anxious ahead of sentencing on Friday.

Earlier on Thursday, Lindon Wagner and Robin Harwood were found guilty by the high court sitting at Palm Ridge Magistrates Court of the premeditated murder of the 18-year-old and the attempted murder of her 14-year-old friend, who sustained severe burns in the attack.

Theologo’s mother Sylvia says she’s relieved the trial is almost over and hopes Judge Geraldine Borchers will hand out lengthy sentences to the two convicted killers.

Thursday’s judgment marked the end of the ordeal for co-accused Harvey Isha, who was acquitted of all charges....

Satanic trial evidence summarised
November 4 2013 By Naledi Mailula

Johannesburg - Evidence presented in the trial of four people accused of murdering Kirsty Theologo was summarised on Monday by a prosecutor in the High Court in Johannesburg, sitting in Palm Ridge.

Linden Wagner, Courtney Daniels, Robin Harwood, and Harvey Isha are charged with murdering Theologo, 18, and attempting to murder her 14-year-old friend in October 2011....

He said he poured petrol on her and set her alight as part of a Satanic “soul-selling” ritual, which was meant to awaken the beast spoken of in the Bible.

He and the others then chanted a poem calling on the beast to awaken, but nothing happened.

Wagner said he and his co-accused had hoped to gain certain things from the ritual. He was hoping to gain power.

He told the court they drew a five-pointed star and put a Bible in a fire....

Two others, Lester Moody and Jeremy King, earlier confessed to the killing and were sentenced to 17-years in prison, five of which were suspended.

Irish priest found guilty of child sex abuse in Australia

Father Finian Egan (78) convicted on seven counts of indecent assault and one count of rape

An Irish priest has been found guilty of child sex offences committed in New South Wales over a period of 26 years.

Father Finian Egan was convicted in the Australian District Court on seven counts of indecent assault and one count of rape between 1961 and 1987, while he worked as a priest at two parishes in Sydney and one on the state's central coast. He was found not guilty on one count of indecent assault.

Egan (78), who worked as a priest and youth worker in several dioceses, was found guilty of repeatedly abusing girls aged 10 to 17....

After Egan told the girl she had "beautiful hair", she asked a nun to cut it off.

"I thought if I didn't have nice hair he wouldn't be interested in grabbing hold of me," she said.

When the victim, who cannot be named, eventually told a nun about the sexual abuse by Egan, she was called a "filthy little liar" and forced to drink several doses of castor oil as punishment....

Egan had denied the allegations against him.

In May 2008 Egan was allowed to go home to Ireland and say Mass, despite allegations of sexual abuse against him. The Irish Catholic Church was not warned about the allegations.

Abuse victims await truth in Vic report AAP Patrick Caruana and Daniel Fogarty - November 5, 2013

No amount of time or institutional muscle can match the power of the truth.

With the impending release of a Victorian parliamentary inquiry report, it appears the truth of institutional responses to child abuse is about to come out.

Abuse survivors have high hopes for the report's findings, which come after an arduous 12 months of hearings around the state, involving often graphic and harrowing stories of sexual and physical abuse.

Judy Courtin, who is doing a PhD on sexual abuse and the Catholic Church, said the release of the report was hugely significant for victims.

"I think it will be a huge day for the victims and their families," she said....

Among the testimony was the startling accusation from police that the Catholic Church destroyed evidence, shielded pedophile clergy members and put its own image ahead of the needs of victims.

In its response, the church acknowledged past failures but said it was not aware of a single example of a clergy authority not cooperating with police....

Ariel Castro's captive: 'I told him he was a monster'

Ariel Castro's captive: 'I told him he was a monster'
Marisol Bello, USA TODAY November 5, 2013

....Knight's short stature, spiky red hair and lip and nose piercings belie the backbone of a fighter who can teach others how to survive in the worst of circumstances, say mental health experts who work with trauma victims.

In her first public interview, Knight describes in graphic detail how her kidnapper, Ariel Castro, abused her and tied her up "like a fish."

With apparent poise, she described how Castro abducted her while she was lost trying to get to an appointment. He lured her into his house by telling her he had puppies that he would give her. He tied her up in the basement with rusted chains and put a helmet on her head.

Knight was matter-of-fact as she talked about how Castro tied her up after he lured her into the house....

"I hated him," she said. "I told him he was a monster."....

Psychologists who work with trauma and sexual abuse victims say the Cleveland woman is an example of resiliency.

"She's a survivor," says Charles Figley, professor of disaster mental health at Tulane University and editor of the Encyclopedia of Trauma. He says she took charge during her captivity, bore the brunt of Castro's attacks and survived.

"Now that she's out, she's taking charge again," he says. By telling her story her way, it's clear that Knight doesn't want to be cast as a victim, he says....

Michelle Knight tells Dr. Phil, 'I was tied up like a fish', DJ Jimmy Savile harassed top music boss' wife at a dinner party at Tony Blair's Chequers country retreat

Michelle Knight tells Dr. Phil, 'I was tied up like a fish'
By Catherine E. Shoichet, CNN
Mon November 4, 2013

Dr. Phil previews his exclusive interview with Michelle Knight tonight on AC 360 at 8 p.m. ET on CNN.

(CNN) -- Six months after she was freed from the "house of horrors" where Ariel Castro held her captive for 11 years, Cleveland kidnapping victim Michelle Knight is speaking out.

In an exclusive interview with Dr. Phil McGraw scheduled to air Tuesday and Wednesday, Knight describes a moment when Castro trapped her in a room and tied her up with an orange extension cord....

"It's astounding to me that she had the strength that she did," McGraw told "Anderson Cooper 360." "She says that she was referred to as the unbreakable one. She fought him every step of the way."....

In August, Castro was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years after he pleaded guilty to 937 counts, including murder and kidnapping....

But since their rescue, Knight hasn't shied away from speaking out. "After 11 years, I am finally being heard, and it's liberating," she said in a powerful statement at Castro's sentencing describing the abuse she endured.

Oasis boss was furious at 'dirty old man' but suppressed his rage
He said: 'At Chequers it's not done to break Jimmy Savile's nose'
McGee also spoke of the air of menace that surrounded Savile

By Sam Webb and John Stevens

4 November 2013
Jimmy Savile harassed the wife of a record label boss at a dinner party hosted by Tony Blair at Chequers, it has been revealed.

Alan McGee said he had wanted to punch Savile after he persistently chatted up and tried to kiss his wife Kate.

The New Labour donor, who discovered rock band Oasis, said he  resisted only because he did not want to embarrass Mr Blair.
Mr McGee, 53, said: ‘At dinner, Kate was between Jimmy Savile and Judi Dench. Savile started to hit on Kate, kissing his way up her arms, kissing her fingers.

‘I was thinking, “What a dirty old man” but at Chequers it’s not done to break Jimmy Savile’s nose.

‘Kate came over and said, “He’s a pervert”. He left her alone once she was next to me.’....

Powerful friends: Jimmy Saville with then Prime Minister Tony Blair in 1998. The event at Chequers took place a year later....

Savile once boasted he spent ‘11 consecutive Christmases at Chequers’, which is four miles from Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where he abused many of his victims.

He is thought to visited Chequers only once while Mr Blair was in office.

Cops report increase in complaints

Fresh allegations and reports of sexual abuse in Northland are flooding police hotlines following recent sex cases.

Police believe successful prosecutions and convictions in high-profile cases are giving victims, and people aware of abuse in the region, confidence to lodge fresh complaints.

The Far North - and Kaitaia in particular - has recently been rocked by a stream of cases of young boys and girls being sexually exploited by family and friends.

The CIA appears to fund the Canadian torture of children, "From 1946 through 1952 hundreds of Nazi and SS doctors were granted citizenship and immigration to Canada under Project Paperclip stated Kevin Annett, author of "Hidden No Longer." "They worked at Indian hospitals and other facilities under CIA and military sponsorship, including the Allen Memorial Institute in Montreal. Their research includes trauma-based mind control programs, sterilization techniques and pharmacological drug testing on native children, orphans, and many others. Children, especially if they were Indians, were easy to obtain for these studies, and in some cases, were tortured to death as part of studies by researchers working alongside Nazi and SS doctors."

Jerry Sandusky asks Pennsylvania high court to take case, Blind to betrayal: Why we fool ourselves we aren’t being fooled - Book Review

Jerry Sandusky asks Pennsylvania high court to take case
AP November 1, 2013
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Jerry Sandusky wants Pennsylvania's highest court to take up his appeal of a 45-count child sex abuse conviction, saying in a petition released Friday that the trial judge should have instructed jurors regarding the length of time it took his victims to come forward.

The new filing also repeated other arguments that were recently rejected by the mid-level Superior Court, including a claim that Sandusky's lawyers lacked sufficient time to prepare and that a prosecutor improperly referred to Sandusky's decision not to testify....

The petition argues that Judge John Cleland's decision not to issue the "failure to make a prompt report" jury instruction was catastrophic to the defense strategy....

The defense lawyers said most of the eight young men who testified against Sandusky waited years to disclose the abuse, although one told his mother about showering with Sandusky the same day. The others ranged from two to 16 years, they wrote.

Cleland said he would not issue the jury instruction because he believed research indicates delayed reporting is not unusual in child sexual abuse cases, so a delay would not necessarily indicate dishonesty....

(Wiley, 2013). Molly Dragiewicz, Queensland Institute of Technology   The Criminologist The Official Newsletter of the American Society of Criminology Vol. 38, No. 5, September/October 2013 p. 60-61

Jennifer Freyd and Pamela Birrell’s "Blind to betrayal: Why we fool ourselves we aren’t being fooled"....expands upon Freyd’s earlier work on betrayal trauma theory (Freyd, 1996; Smith & Freyd, 2013)....However, the most interesting contribution of the book for criminologists may well be the authors’ attention to the relationship of power to the social construction of reality. The authors argue that vulnerability to or dependency on the perpetrator contributes to failures of recognition of abuse. In other words, targets of abuse may be “blind” to the harm being done tothem while it is unsafe to recognize it. As a result, some memories of abuse are visible only later, when they attain the resources to survive the trauma.

Recent scholarship has highlighted the connections between psychological phenomena like individual perceptions of reality and the collective power relations that shape them (Salter, 2012; Zurbriggen, 2009). As critical scholars argue, pervasive forms of violence and abuse serve to reproduce social hierarchies, reinforcing some hegemonic community values even as they transgressother social norms. Like Stanley Cohen’s earlier book, States of Denial (2001), Blind to Betrayal examines victim, perpetrator, and bystander denial of horrific events and traces connections between psychology, culture, and politics. Freyd and Birrell argue that “betrayal blindness means not seeing what is there to be seen” (p. 1) and emphasize the way that betrayal and vulnerability shape the experience of trauma.

Using examples from popular culture and research, the authors illustrate the dynamics of interpersonal and institutional betrayal in a range of contexts. The book describes Freyd’s two-dimensional model for traumatic events, which incorporates the extentto which events are terror or fear inducing and the level of social betrayal involved. The authors argue that events that are both terror or fear inducing and high in social betrayal are the most traumatic (p. 57). Thus, Freyd and Birrell stress the multiplication of trauma by social betrayal. They also note the gendered nature of the phenomenon, wherein “betrayal traumas are frequent, particularly for girls and women” (p. 58). This observation agrees with other scholarship on the routine negation of girls’ and women’s accounts of abuse (Richie, 2012; Salter, 2012).

....Page 61

One of the most important parts of the book is found in Chapters 10 and 13 where Freyd and Birrell discuss the phenome-non of scholars’ participation in organized resistance to the disclosure of violence and abuse. Freyd uses the example of her ownexperience, in which her mother created a non-profit organization called The False Memory Syndrome Foundation (FMSF) in response to learning that Jennifer Freyd had disclosed her experience of childhood abuse to her partner. The FMSF website says, The False Memory Syndrome Foundation was formed by a group of accused families and several professionals at the Uni-versity of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and Johns Hopkins Medical Institution in Baltimore. This nuclear group had come together with other families to try to figure out what had happened to cause the dramatic change of behavior in their now-adult children, to try to cope with the pain from the loss of their children and to address the legal nightmare of being accused of abuse. (The False Memory Syndrome Foundation, n.d.)

The organization has an advisory board made of up PhDs who share a belief in “implanted” and “false memories.” They advocate for those who claim they have been falsely accused, and promote research that allegedly shows disclosures of abuse are not credible, especially when delayed. This example of scholars mobilizing to discredit survivors of abuse is not unique. Criminologists rarely discuss the role of self-interest among scholars who may be perpetrators as well as survivors of violence and abuse. However, it is a mathematical certainty that some scholars are indeed perpetrators of violence and abuse. Freyd’s discussion of the harassment and discrediting tactics of the FMSF, including recruiting her own colleagues in the campaign to discredit her, will probably be familiar to some ASC members. Freyd and Birrell’s discussion of these dynamics took courage, since scholars who talk about campaigns against them are sometimes silenced when attempts to defend themselves result in claims of ad hominem attacks....

Arrest in investigation into abuse in North Wales care, Nova Scotia Home probe to proceed

Arrest in investigation into abuse in North Wales care
Thu 31 Oct 2013
Police investigating historical cases of child abuse in the North Wales care system made their 14th arrest.

A 60-year-old man from Oswestry in Shropshire was detained for questioning on suspicion of a number of cases of child cruelty.

McNeil: Home probe to proceed

An inquiry into alleged historical abuse at the Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children should start in the spring, but Premier Stephen McNeil is less definite about his new government’s position on court action by former residents.

McNeil had called for a public inquiry for months, and he made it an election promise. After his first official cabinet meeting Thursday, he said he’s hoping that the terms of reference will be set by the end of the year.

He said the government would then allow the inquiry to happen through the spring....
