New Sex Abuse Suit Claims Sandusky Threatened Boy’s Family If He Told

New Sex Abuse Suit Claims Sandusky Threatened Boy’s Family If He Told
By Colleen Curry | ABC News 11/30/11

The latest person to accuse former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky of sexual abuse also claims that Sandusky threatened to hurt the boy’s family if he ever told anyone about the abuse.Sandusky’s newest accuser, who is now 29, had not told anyone about the abuse until he read about the grand jury presentment charging Sandusky with 40 counts of child molestation over 15 years, his lawyer Jeff Anderson said today. Until that time, he had thought he was the only victim.

The man, whose identity was not released, issued a statement that said, ”I don’t want other kids to be abused by Jerry Sandusky or anybody like Penn State to allow people like him to do it–rape kids! I never told anybody what he did to me over 100 times at all kinds of places until the newspapers reported that he had abused other kids.”

“I am hurting and have been for a long time because of what happened, but feel now even more tormented that I have learned of so many other kids were abused after me,” he said.

Anderson said the boy met Sandusky through the Second Mile foundation when the alleged victim was 10, and was abused by Sandusky from 1992 to 1994. He said that Sandusky threatened to harm the boy’s family if the boy told anyone about the abuse. Sandusky also paid for sports camps, plied the boy with gifts, and took him on trips, Anderson said.

The lawyer said during a press conference today that they had filed suit against Sandusky, Penn State and the Second Mile charity seeking reparations for over 100 acts of sexual abuse.

Anderson alleged that Sandusky had abused the boy at Penn State University, at Second Mile events, at his home, at a Penn State bowl game out of state, and in Philadelphia.

Alleged Victim In Sandusky Case Leaves High School Due To Bullying Laura Hibbard 11/21/11

The first known alleged victim in the Jerry Sandusky case, known as "Victim One" was forced to leave his school because of an onslaught of bullying, The Patriot-News reports.

Mike Gillum, psychologist for the family, told the news source that officials at Central Mountain High School didn't step in and provide guidance to the boy's classmates, who began to blame Joe Paterno's firing on the 17-year-old.

Victim One testified he was forced into multiple sex acts between 2006 and 2008. During that time, Sandusky was also assisting the high school with their varsity football program, the report states.

Gillum told The Patriot News that name-calling and verbal threats at the school, which is located about 30 miles northeast of Pennsylvania State University, became too much for the boy to bear.

The Centre Daily Times wrote the 23-page report by a state grand jury investigation alleges that Sandusky molested at least eight boys over a 15-year period, beginning with "Victim 1."

Neighboring county entangled in scandal
By Curtis Tate — McClatchy Newspapers Nov 21, 2011

LOCK HAVEN — While most of the attention in the Penn State child sex abuse scandal has focused on State College, the impact extends farther north, where some of the alleged victims of Jerry Sandusky still live....

But from one end of the county to the other, everyone’s talking about what happened at Central Mountain High School in Mill Hall, where Sandusky, the former Penn State defensive coordinator, volunteered as a football coach for three years.

A 23-page report by a state grand jury investigating allegations that Sandusky molested at least eight boys over a 15-year period begins with “Victim 1.” Victim 1 testified that he met Sandusky as a participant in The Second Mile, a charity Sandusky founded in 1977 to help underprivileged and at-risk youth throughout Pennsylvania.

Victim 1, who was 11 or 12 when he first met Sandusky, testified that Sandusky cultivated a relationship with him, buying him gifts, taking him to restaurants and inviting him to sleep over in his basement....

“Victim 1 did not want to engage in sexual conduct with Sandusky and knew it was wrong,” the grand jury report said. Though this discomfort led Victim 1 to eventually break off contact with Sandusky, the report said, Sandusky persisted. An agent for the state Attorney General’s Office testified that there were 61 phone calls from Sandusky’s home phone to Victim 1’s home phone between January 2008 and July 2009.

The grand jury report said that Victim 1 ceased contact with Sandusky when he was a freshman at Central Mountain, where as a volunteer coach, Sandusky had “unfettered access.”

Sandusky would routinely call Victim 1 out of class to meet with him in a conference room, the grand jury report said, and no one monitored these visits. Steven Turchetta, an assistant principal at the school, told the grand jury that Sandusky was “controlling” in the mentoring relationships he established with Second Mile participants and called some of Sandusky’s behavior “suspicious.”

Turchetta learned of the sexual abuse allegations when Victim 1’s mother called the school to report it. School district officials subsequently barred Sandusky from school property and reported the allegations to authorities, as required by law....

Victim 1 has been forced to leave the school because of bullying, the Patriot-News of Harrisburg reported Sunday. Classmates were blaming him for the firing of Penn State head coach Joe Paterno, the newspaper reported.

Sandusky abuse claims date back to 1994, grand jury says
By the CNN Wire Staff November 8, 2011
(CNN) -- The child sex investigation against retired Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky began in 2008 with the first report of allegations to law enforcement. But allegations and eyewitness accounts, some known to university officials, date back as far as 1994.

Children’s Bones Identified at Canada’s Oldest Indian Residential School
Posted on November 28, 2011 by itccs

A child’s remains and other human bones have been identified at Canada’s oldest Indian residential school in Brantford, Ontario:

Archaeological surveys and test digs authorized by we, elders of the Kanien’keha:ka Nation, have been conducted at the former Mohawk Institute Indian residential school since October 1.

This past week, while on the grounds of the school, our researchers along with Kevin Annett -Rawennatshani, who acts with our approval, have unearthed what has been described as human remains. One bone among sixteen uncovered has been identified, through preliminary visual examination by a competent archaeologist, as that of a young child. This bone sample is described by the same archaeologist as “definitely human”.

A test dig in a twenty square foot area on grounds adjoining the former Mohawk Institute have revealed a considerable number of bones, as well as buttons which have been confirmed to be part of the children’s school uniforms. Large deposits of coal were also found associated with these remains, all at a depth of barely two feet. Several of the bones have also been cut up, suggesting that the bodies may have been deliberately dismembered, while other bones were broken.

Upcoming Webinar (for survivors and professionals):
Saturday, December 17, 2011
noon Pacific Time (2 hours)
Memory & Survivors

Presenter: Alikina

Most survivors have questions about their memory processes at some time: 'is it true, did it happen?' or 'why can't I remember?', or even 'why do I keep having intrusive memories?' As we heal, we also become aware of times when our memories seem different than how we've been lead to believe 'normal' memory works. We feel like we forget too much, or we have nearly perfect memories. Often questions about memories of abuse are addressed in therapy, groups, books, etc; but questions about the everyday workings of memory, and how abuse may be affecting our brain function, stay unanswered.

This webinar will primarily focus on what current psychological science knows about basic memory processes, as well as issues unique to the survivor community, learning styles and how they affect memory, tricks to assist remembering, and plenty of Q & A time.

Alikina is a survivor of severe abuse and a current grad-school student halfway through her Master's Degree in Mental Health Counseling. She has presented articles and webinars for Survivorship in the past. She has worked with abuse survivors through community support organizations and been in therapy as both the client and the therapist, and plans to work with abuse and trauma survivors as her career path.

The Myth of Parental Alienation Syndrome, Sybil in her own words

The Myth of Parental Alienation Syndrome and Its Impact on Women in Child Custody Cases Thursday, December 8, 2011, 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Course Description:

A diverse panel from varying disciplines will explore how the theory of 'Parental Alienation Syndrome' (PAS) disproportionally affects the way judges and court collaterals make decisions and recommendations in child custody determinations, focusing on New York State.

Other topics to be discussed include:

clinical and ethical issues surrounding parental alienation syndrome,
lack of clinical and empirical evidence to support PAS as valid,
biases towards using parental alienation as the defining factor in which parent receives custody,
its intersection with child and intimate partner abuse, and
a first hand account of its affect on a former child involved in a custody dispute.

Syracuse Scandal: Bernie Fine's Wife Admitted Worries Over Abuse On Tape-Recorded Conversations
The Huffington Post Chris Greenberg 11/27/11

Two days after police searched the home of longtime Syracuse assistant basketball coach Bernie -- who is under investigation for sexually abusing two boys who served as ball boys for the basketball team -- the woman who shared that home is involved in a major development in the scandal.

According to ESPN, Fine's wife, Laurie, admitted her knowledge of the alleged abuse to one of the possible victims, Bobby Davis, during tape-recorded telephone conversations between the two from October 2002....

Syracuse head basketball coach Jim Boeheim was extremely vocal in defense of his longtime assistant coach when child molestation allegations were recently made public, going as far as to call Davis a "liar." These recordings may make Boehiem reconsider his stance.

Bernie Fine's wife had abuse concerns By Mark Schwarz and Arty Berko ESPN November 27, 2011
In a tape-recorded 2002 telephone conversation, the wife of Syracuse associate head coach Bernie Fine admitted she had concerns that her husband had sexually molested a team ball boy in their home, but said she felt powerless to stop the alleged abuse.

Bobby Davis, who has publicly accused Bernie Fine of years of molestation that Davis said started when he was in the seventh grade, legally recorded his Oct. 8, 2002, phone call to Laurie Fine....

After "Outside the Lines" first reported the allegations against Fine on Nov. 17, the now-39-year-old Davis shared the tape with Syracuse police, one of several law-enforcement agencies who have opened an investigation into the case. Davis first gave the tape to ESPN in 2003. At the time, ESPN did not report Davis' accusations, or report the contents of the tape, because no one else would corroborate his story.

After a second man said this month that he was also molested by Fine (that man is Mike Lang, Davis' step brother), ESPN hired a voice-recognition expert who said the voice on the tape matches the voice of Laurie Fine. The call was made and received in states that don't require both parties to consent to a call being recorded....

On the tape, Davis repeatedly asked Laurie Fine about what she knew of the alleged molestation.

"Do you think I'm the only one that he's ever done that to?" Davis asked.

"No ... I think there might have been others but it was geared to ... there was something about you," Laurie Fine said.....

Syracuse takes stand as allegations swirl
ROGER RUBIN
Saturday, November 19, 2011

SYRACUSE – There were subtle and not-so-subtle reminders on the Syracuse campus that the school’s hallowed basketball program may be on the brink of scandal on Saturday, three days after city police confirmed an investigation into allegations that Jim Boeheim’s associate head coach, Bernie Fine, sexually assaulted two ball boys in the mid-1980s....

Boeheim launched a staunch defense of Fine on Thursday after ESPN aired the molestation allegations by Billy Davis and his stepbrother Mike Lang. He pointed to a four-month university probe that could not corroborate claims then made solely by Davis, called Davis a “liar” and said the accusers were “trying to get money.” He softened the stance slightly a day later by telling the Syracuse Post-Standard, “If I saw some reason not to support Bernie, I would not support him.”....

Third accuser says Syracuse coach Bernie Fine sexually abused him as child
November 27, 2011, 6:25 AM By The Post-Standard
By Mike McAndrew and John O'Brien

Syracuse, N.Y. -- A third accuser told police Wednesday that Syracuse University associate head basketball coach Bernie Fine sexually abused him as a child.

That revelation prompted authorities to search Fine's home two days later, a source said.

Zach Tomaselli, 23, of Lewiston, Maine, told Syracuse police that Fine molested him in 2002 in a Pittsburgh hotel room when Tomaselli was 13 years old....

How Much Restitution Will be Permitted for Child Pornography Victims

The Second Circuit Speaks; Will The Supreme Court Step In?

By James R. Marsh on November 25, 2011

Guest Legal Analysis by Jennifer Freeman of Freeman Lewis LLP

On September 8, 2011, the Second Circuit dealt a blow to victims of child pornography who had been seeking broad relief under a federal criminal statute authorizing restitution. In United States v. Aumais, Docket No. 10-3160 (Sept. 8, 2011), the New York federal appeals court reversed a restitution order of nearly $50,000 assessed in favor of a victim of child porn against a possessor of the images, holding that proximate cause was lacking, without which such damages could not be imposed.

In issuing this decision, the Second Circuit agreed with the result reached by a number of other Circuit Courts and disagreed with the Fifth Circuit. A petition for certiorari to the United States Supreme Court is currently pending in a similar case. This is an issue that cries out for Supreme Court resolution, and we very much hope that the Supreme Court will step in to provide clarity to the victims, perpetrators and others in this highly charged and important arena.

Recent Expansion of Restitution Claims

The United States Supreme Court has held that distribution of child pornography is “intrinsically related to the sexual abuse of children” because, among other things, “the materials produced are a permanent record of the children’s participation and the harm to the child is exacerbated by their circulation.” New York v. Ferber, 458 U.S. 747, 759 (1982). Once the acts are recorded, “the pornography may haunt [the child] in future years, long after the original misdeed took place.” 458 U.S. at 759 n.10.

Commencing in about 2009, victims of child pornography started filing claims of restitution under 18 U.S.C. § 2259, the federal “child pornography restitution statute”, as part of criminal cases against transporters, distributors or possessors of the images. Since that time, abuse victims have sought millions of dollars in restitution damages from the sellers or users of the child pornography....

Penn State Scandal: Mother Of Alleged Jerry Sandusky Victim Claims Mistreatment By Son's School - Ryan D. Buell 11/23/11

Court records refer to him simply, as Victim One. Outside of a four-and-a-half page section about him in the grand jury indictment of ex-Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, little else has been discussed about him publicly.

Last week, his mother (whom I will refer to as "Mother One") removed him from Central Mountain High School in Mill Hall, Pa., where he was a senior and an all-star athlete. In an interview conducted last week, she explained why she pulled him from the school.

"They were not helpful," Mother One said of the school's administrators. "They wanted me to go home and forget about it."

Mother One also alleges that since the Sandusky scandal erupted, fellow students and the high school's football coach (who also serves as assistant principal) have all targeted her son with verbal attacks and threats of violence.

She also claims that the school's principal tried to convince her and her son not to report their allegations against Sandusky to the police, and that as recently as this month, refused to treat threats of violence against her son by other students as credible....

As the full story emerged, Victim One revealed that for nearly two years he was subjected to various sexual acts by Sandusky. Some had even occurred at the middle school and high school, where Sandusky had been given complete access to him by school officials.

On Nov. 7, Pennsylvania State Attorney General Linda Kelly praised Central Mountain High School for "doing the right thing" in the Sandusky matter. The indictment states that the school immediately called the police when it was informed of the abuse....

Neither Turchetta nor Probst (nor any school official, for that matter) have explained why Sandusky was given the authority to pull Victim One out of class and take him off school grounds without permission from his mother. Calls placed to the offices of Central Mountain High School have gone unanswered.

And although Sandusky has been barred from the school, Mother One said other problems remained, which also convinced her to pull her son from the school. She said that once her son disclosed the abuse, fellow students and even school administrators remained skeptical -- and often incredulous -- about his claims....

She said her son is in constant fear, particularly about being abused again by Sandusky. Neither Victim One nor his mother sleep in their respective bedrooms; the two now sleep on separate couches in their living room.

She says her son has nightmares "every night," and that she does, too. She said she wakes up nightly when she overhears her son's cries in his sleep. He never says what he dreams about.

For his part, Gillum won't go into detail about his patient's mental state. But he noted that in almost all cases, rape and sexual abuse victims suffer from depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, and think about hurting themselves physically.

Penn State Scandal: Mother of Sandusky's Adopted Son Speaks Out
By KEVIN DOLAK and JIM AVILA (@JimAvilaABC)
Nov. 17, 2011

The birth mother of Jerry Sandusky's youngest adopted child has come forward saying she believes the former Penn State coach led her son on a path of self-destruction and that she contacted authorities years ago about her son's safety.

Debra Long told ABC News in an exclusive interview that sharing her now 33-year-old son Matt with Sandusky had been a nightmare after the coach became the boy's guardian via foster care in 1995. Long says that she watched as her child became enamored with the local hero and then increasingly frightened by Sandusky's behavior.

Exclusive: Jerry Sandusky interview prompts long-ago victims to contact lawyer
November 17, 2011
SARA GANIM, The Patriot-News By SARA GANIM

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Jerry Sandusky’s primetime television interview Monday led several potential victims to come forward and consider sharing their story, according to two State College attorneys.

Hearing his voice and his words proclaiming no wrong — while admitting he showered innocently with young boys — was a trigger for some who say they were abused by the former Penn State defensive coordinator. One said it went back to the 1970s, around the time Sandusky founded the charity that prosecutors say was his axis for finding victims.

SYBIL in her own words: The Untold Story of Shirley Mason, Her Multiple Personalities and Paintings

The book "Sybil" by Flora Rheta Schreiber written in the 1970's, has recently received media attention again.

One author has attacked the veracity of the Sybil story, calling MPD - DID (dissociative identity disorder) a "cultural construct." Research shows that this isn't true. MPD - DID is found around the world. Research studies have shown it to be caused by severe, repeated trauma.

Review of "Sybil in her own words"

Permission was given to post this here.

After reading the book "Sybil in her own words" by Patrick Suraci, Ph.D., I realized the importance of this book. The people in the Sybil story are treated like human beings and they are allowed to speak about their own life stories. What is interesting about this book, is that it is written by a professional who has experience with the scientific knowledge of MPD.

The book shows how Dr. Connie Wilbur's treatment was successful and that Shirley Mason (Sybil) never had a relapse or return of her MPD symptoms after her treatment with Wilbur. She was able to live a full life, as shown in her interactions and discussions with Patrick Suraci, Ph.D.

In chapter seven, Dr. Suraci goes back to Shirley Mason's home town to check on her story and validate it. He speaks with three women, Wilma Bode, Betty Christen and Patricia Alcott, who were classmates and playmates with Shirley in her childhood. Wilma and Betty were two of the few children that were able to enter Shirley's household.

Wilma stated, "We always said that her mother was an old witch." She describes Shirley as having troubles concentrating in school and not knowing if she was day dreaming or that her attention was drawn away. Wilma is asked if she believes if Shirley was abused. Wilma states that she believes that some of what is written in the book did happen.

Betty talks about Shirley's mother. She states that her mother never came over to visit, but would come over and look (or peek) in the windows when they had company. She said that "Ms. Mason relieved herself in a neighbor's yard."

Patricia describes Shirley's mother as "strange, stern, raucous" and "someone to stay away from." She states that Shirley's mother (Mattie) "had a shrill voice and ridiculed Shirley." Shirley's mother repeated things over and over again. Patricia stated Mattie "played the piano too loudly, bombastically, venting anger. She was harsh." She said that Shirley's father (Wilbur) "stood in shaded corners with his head down."

Patrick Suraci describes the mechanism of "splitting" that contributed to the development of Shirley's personalities. Shirley came to view Mattie sometimes as the "good mother" and sometimes as the "bad mother."

In his chapter on Shirley in New York, Patrick Suraci speaks with Jim and Naomi, Shirley's closest living relatives. Jim had noticed that on the phone Shirley "was a different personality, a different person." Naomi agreed and described a strong change in personality also. Naomi in Chapter Nine tells Patrick that Shirley and Dr. Wilbur confirmed that the book Sybil "was 100% accurate."

The pictures in the book are excellent. Under one of the pictures drawn by Shirley's alter Peggy of a Christmas tree (in black and white), the note describes that Christmas was unpleasant for Shirley because she would receive a lot of games and toys which her mother would put away and not let her play with. Shirley was told she could play with them another time. Yet her mother would give them away to a poor family that didn't have anything.

Patrick Suraci states in his chapter Controversy Over Sybil that Mason, Schreiber and Wilbur were offered money, television and media interviews to reveal Shirley's identity, but did not do this. He discusses the problems with Dr. Herbert Spiegel's view of the Sybil story, as well as other skeptical of the story.

I highly recommend this book to those interested in the Sybil story. It is very well documented, using actual transcripts of conversations with those in the story and those that knew Shirley, showing that the original Sybil book was an accurate description of Shirley's life.

Casey Introduces Bill to Strengthen Child Protection Laws

Casey Introduces Bill to Strengthen Child Protection Laws

Casey: All Adults Have Responsibility to Report Abuse to Authorities

Wednesday, November 16, 2011
Bill Would Emphasize Awareness Training for Those Most Likely to Witness Abuse

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) today introduced legislation to require all adults to report child abuse and neglect to the appropriate authorities....

The Speak Up to Protect Every Abused Kid (Speak Up) Act of 2011 would require all states to pass and enforce a law requiring all adults to report instances of known or suspected child abuse in order for states to receive funding through the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), the federal statute focused on child abuse and neglect prevention and response.

The Speak Up Act will specify that child abuse must be reported directly to law enforcement or the state’s Child Protective Services agency. Currently, federal law does not specify to whom mandated reporters must report suspected abuse or neglect. In Pennsylvania and many other states, the reporter must notify only the person in charge of the relevant institution, creating a loophole that tragically prevents or delays action against suspected abusers.

The bill will also:

Provide support to states to carry out educational campaigns and training to inform individuals about what constitutes child abuse and neglect, and promote greater responsibility;

Promotes new approaches and techniques to improve reporting; and

Evaluate states’ progress on mandatory reporting.

The Speak Up Act is cosponsored by Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA).

Obama Administration Actively Working Against Child Victims

Obama Administration Actively Working Against Child Victims

By James R. Marsh on November 16, 2011

....Unfortunately when it comes to victims of child pornography, the Obama Administration has taken a curiously activist approach which is antithetical to the best interests of children who are raped and sexually exploited in order to produce child pornography.

By advancing an un-provable standard which the government itself has almost NEVER been able to sustain, the Obama Administration has effectively prevented hundreds of child victims from receiving any money from the tens of thousands of child molesters and pedophiles who collect and trade child sex abuse images.

It's bad enough that the Attorney General is opposing child victims in the Supreme Court. Now, in the Sixth Circuit, the Obama Justice Department is asking the Court of Appeals to SET ASIDE a million dollar award to a child victim because the legal standard which resulted in the award was too easy.

Instead, the government wants the trial court to re-consider the case and impose a higher standard WHICH THE GOVERNMENT HAS RARELY BEEN ABLE TO SUSTAIN in hundreds of cases all over the country.

What's even stranger about the Obama Administration's position is that when given the chance in the Ninth Circuit to challenge that court's decision that the higher standard is impossible to prove, the Administration decided NOT to appeal.

The government is left advancing a position which the courts of appeal say is unworkable and un-provable while child sex abuse victims are left with nothing....

Penn State coach McQueary breaks silence, Expert on pedophilia explains scandal

Penn State coach Mike McQueary breaks silence
16 Nov 2011

Mike McQueary's comments, in an email made available to The Associated Press on Tuesday, appeared to add more confusion to a scandal that has enveloped the university and resulted in the firing of renowned head football coach Joe Paterno, the ousting of president Graham Spanier and charges of perjury against the athletic director and a senior vice president.

McQueary, now the football team's wide receivers coach, told a friend from Penn State that he made sure the 2002 shower assault he witnessed was stopped and went to the police about it. The friend made McQueary's email, written Nov. 8, available to the AP....

Mike McQueary, the coach at Penn State who is said to have witnessed Jerry Sandusky sexually abusing a young boy in a shower, has broken his silence, claiming that he did, in fact tell the police about what he saw....

McQueary, who has been placed on administrative leave....wrote: "I did stop it, not physically ... but made sure it was stopped when I left that locker room ... I did have discussions with police and with the official at the university in charge of police .... no one can imagine my thoughts or wants to be in my shoes for those 30-45 seconds ... trust me."

Penn State is the Tip of the Iceberg

We’ve started a conversation now. It won't be easy, but we should keep it going. BY Barry Nolan 11/14/2011

....PROTECT works with some high-tech wizards and law enforcement agencies to go after those who abuse children and traffic in online child pornography. As the good folks at PROTECT put it:

Child pornography images are crime scene photos, and the thriving black market for them can only be supplied one way: through the rape and torture of more children.

Among their most important victories, PROTECT has managed to close the “incest loophole” in some states. You may find it hard to believe, as I did, but the law in many states gives “special immunity to sex offenders who grow their own victims.” Incest loopholes can provide that:

An uncle who raped his niece was guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by 45 days of community service. Or one that said a father who sexually assaulted his own child had committed a minor felony, punishable by probation.

Because of such laws, parents who raped and sodomized their own children could avoid decades in prison, and instead, be paroled back into the very homes that had served as the crime scene. And their children and spouses could be required to attend “reunification therapy” sessions. Such loopholes have been closed in North Carolina and California and New York. But they still exist all over the country....

More than 90 percent of juvenile sexual abuse victims know their perpetrator in some way.

• Most (70 percent) of the sexual assaults reported to law enforcement occurred in the residence of the victim.

• One of every seven victims reported to law enforcement agencies were under age 6.

• Assaults against the youngest victims were the least likely of juvenile victimizations to result in arrest

Jerry Sandusky: 'I didn't go around seeking out every young person for sexual needs that I've helped' More from Ex-Penn State coach interview revealed on ‘Today’
BY Teri Thompson NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Tuesday, November 15 2011

....BOB COSTAS:

19:00:28:00: "But isn't what you're just describing the classic MO of many pedophiles? And that is that they gain the trust of young people, they don't necessarily abuse every young person. There were hundreds, if not thousands of young boys you came into contact with, but there are allegations that at least eight of them were victimized. Many people believe there are more to come. So it's entirely possible that you could've helped young boy A in some way that was not objectionable while horribly taking advantage of young boy B, C, D, and E. Isn't that possible?"

JERRY SANDUSKY:

19:01:01:00: "Well -- you might think that. I don't know. (LAUGHS) In terms of -- my relationship with so many, many young people. I would-- I would guess that there are many young people who would come forward. Many more young people who would come forward and say that my methods and-- and what I had done for them made a very positive impact on their life. And I didn't go around seeking out every young person for sexual needs that I've helped. There are many that I didn't have-- I hardly had any contact with who I have helped in many, many ways."

Costas then asks Sandusky if he is sexually attracted to young boys, the portion of the interview that was shown on "Rock Center."

BOB COSTAS:

19:01:47:00: "Are you sexually attracted to young boys, to underage boys?"

"Am I sexually attracted to underage boys?" Sandusky repeats.

"Yes," Costas answers.

"Sexually attracted, you know, I -- I enjoy young people," Sandusky says. "I -- I love to be around them. I -- I -- but no I'm not sexually attracted to young boys."

Judge in child abuse scandal donated to charity - A judge who granted unsecured bail to former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky also donated money to the charity he founded.

The Associated Press
11/14/11

PITTSBURGH — A judge who granted unsecured bail to former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky also donated money to the charity he founded.

The charity is at the center of child sex-abuse charges against Sandusky.

District Judge Leslie Dutchcot gave money to The Second Mile in 2009 and volunteered for the group, according to annual reports and her web page.

The charity's 2009 annual report says Dutchcot and her husband donated between $500 and $999 to The Second Mile.

Dutchcot didn't immediately respond to a question about whether she'll recuse herself from the case because of those past ties.

The judge set bail for Sandusky at $100,000 but he did not have to post collateral.

Jerry Sandusky’s lawyer, Joe Amendola, got a 16-year-old client pregnant and later married her - Girl was seeking emancipation from her parents in 1996 BY Teri Thompson , Michael O'keeffe & Kevin Armstrong
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
November 15 2011

Joe Amendola, the State College, Pa., attorney representing accused child molester Jerry Sandusky, has an interesting back story himself: He got a teen-age client pregnant during the mid-1990s.

Amendola, 63, married the girl several years after the birth of their child, The Daily reported Monday night, citing documents filed at the Centre County, Pa., courthouse.

Amendola represented a 16-year-old girl then known as Mary Iavasile when she filed an emancipation petition in September 1996. The emancipation petition said the girl had graduated from high school in two years with a 3.69 GPA and held a fulltime job at Amendola's law office.

The girl gave birth to Amendola's child when she was 17 years old, her mother, Janet Iavasile, said. Amendola would have been about 49 years old at the time. The age of consent in Pennsylvania is 16....

The Citadel Faces Abuse Scandal Similar To Penn State's
November 15, 2011
by Mark Memmott
There's a story unfolding in Charleston, S.C., that sounds depressingly similar to the scandal that has rocked Penn State University.

Officials at The Citadel, "the military college of South Carolina," are admitting they did not do enough after learning that a man in custody in Mount Pleasant, S.C., who has been accused of sexually abusing at least five boys in recent years, was brought to the school's attention in 2007. Then, school officials were told, he had engaged in inappropriate sexual activities with boys during a summer camp at the college in 2002. An internal investigation was done, but police were never informed.....

Louis "Skip" ReVille, 32, a Citadel alum, is accused of sexually abusing boys he coached in Mount Pleasant. In 2007, as Charleston's Post and Courier reports, Citadel officials were told by a suspected victim that five years earlier ReVille had invited him and other boys to a dorm room on campus. ReVille, the boy said, showed them pornography and encouraged them to masturbate. The boy was 14 years old at the time.

ReVille went on to become a school principal and coach in Mount Pleasant. Local WCSC-TV reports that investigators say he now has "confessed to charges he sexually molested teen boys, aged 13 to 15."

Penn State - Cultural Denial & Child Sex Abuse - Institutional Betrayal, Eugenics

Voices In The Family - This Week 11/14/11
Cultural Denial and Child Sex Abuse

Alleged incidents of child sexual abuse brought to light at Penn State are disturbing. University stakeholders have been ousted. The campus remains a live wire of anger and confusion. As our hearts go out to children and families who have come forward with their stories, we find ourselves wondering, why did so many people fail to report what they saw or heard about?

On the next Voices in the Family with Dan Gottlieb: why the cultural hesitation and denial in sexual abuse cases, in general, when the well-being of children is at stake? We'll take a look at the psychology of institutional betrayal as well as prevention of abuse with Jennifer J. Freyd, Michael Stinson, Ken Singer, and Kelly Moore.

Jennifer J. Freyd is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Oregon. She has published extensively on topics that include child abuse, memory, and mental health, as well as ethical issues related to trauma research and conceptualizations. Her current research includes investigation of the impact of institutional betrayal. She is finishing a new book called Betrayal, co-written with Pamela J. Birrell.

http://www.whyy.org/91FM/voices.html

Betrayal Blindness and Institutional Betrayal
Jennifer J. Freyd, Department of Psychology, University of Oregon

What is Betrayal Blindness?
Betrayal blindness is the unawareness, not-knowing, and forgetting exhibited by people towards betrayal. The term "betrayal blindness" was introduced by Freyd (1996), and expanded in Freyd (1999) in the context of Betrayal Trauma Theory. This blindness may extend to betrayals that are not traditionally considered "traumas," such as adultery, inequities in the workplace and society, etc. Victims, perpetrators, and witnesses may display betrayal blindness in order to preserve relationships, institutions, and social systems upon which they depend. (Also, see Eileen Zurbriggen's essay on Betrayal Trauma in the 2004 Election.)

What is Institutional Betrayal?
The term "Institutional Betrayal" refers to wrongdoings perpetrated by an institution upon individuals dependent on that institution, including failure to prevent or respond supportively to wrongdoings by individuals (e.g. sexual assault) committed within the context of the institution. The term "Institutional Betrayal" as connected with Betrayal Trauma Theory is discussed in more detail in various publications, including in a section starting on page 201 of Platt, Barton, & Freyd (2009) and in recent conference posters by Smith & Freyd (2011a; 2011b) and by Medrano, Martin, and Freyd (2011). http://dynamic.uoregon.edu/~jjf/institutionalbetrayal/index.html

Pedophiles infiltrate respected institutions to find victims
By Greg Toppo, USA TODAY 11/15/11
The Penn State allegations may seem unthinkable: revered assistant coach and prominent community activist Jerry Sandusky preying on eight children. But such abuses of trust play out in the USA over and over again.

Respected people who set up charitable or social groups for children, only to be implicated in some form of child sexual abuse, are a frightening reality.

"I call them 'institutions of trust,' " says Portland, Ore., attorney Kelly Clark, who has represented more than 300 sex abuse victims. Some predators are so tacitly trusted "that when something like this happens, the instinctive reaction is, 'That can't happen here. We can't allow the mission to be compromised,' " he says.

Abuse experts say the common denominators in many such crimes are parents willing to allow noted people to have unrestricted access to their kids.

Penn State Abuse Case - Sandusky admits he showered with and touched boys

More Accusations Surface in Penn State Abuse Case
By MARK VIERA and JO BECKER
November 14, 2011

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Close to 10 additional suspected victims have come forward to the authorities since the arrest of the former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky on Nov. 5 on 40 counts of sexually abusing young boys, according to people close to the investigation. The police are working to confirm the new allegations....

In a phone interview with Bob Costas that was broadcast Monday night on “Rock Center,” Sandusky said he was innocent of the charges against him and declared that he was not a pedophile. He did acknowledge, “I shouldn’t have showered with those kids.”

“I could say that I have done some of those things,” he said of the accusations against him. “I have horsed around with kids. I have showered after workouts. I have hugged them and I have touched their legs without intent of sexual contact.”....

The Pennsylvania attorney general has said that Sandusky used the Second Mile to prey on young boys and that he met each of the eight boys mentioned in the grand jury report through the foundation. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/15/sports/ncaafootball/jack-raykovitz-chief-of-second-mile-resigns-amid-penn-state-scandal.html

Jerry Sandusky says he's innocent but admits contact with kids 11/14/11 Sporting News

Sandusky tells NBC's Bob Costas that his physical encounters were never sexual in nature. A grand jury indicted the former defensive coordinator on 40 counts of abuse, and Sandusky was arrested earlier this month.'

"I have horsed around with kids I have showered after workouts. I have hugged them and I have touched their legs without intent of sexual contact," Sandusky tells Costas via telephone.

Sandusky denies that he's a pedophile but also admits, "I shouldn't have showered with those kids."....

Jerry Sandusky Rumored to Have Been 'Pimping Out Young Boys to Rich Donors,' Says Mark Madden by Michael Hurley on Thu, Nov 10, 2011

In April, Pittsburgh radio host Mark Madden wrote a story revealing Penn State for much of the cover-up of Jerry Sandusky's alleged child rape that has been exposed in the past week. While it didn't raise many eyebrows back then, six months later it looks to be incredibly accurate.

On Thursday morning, just hours after legendary head coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier were fired by the school's board of trustees, Madden was asked on WEEI's The Dennis and Callahan Show what he believes the next piece of news will be.

What he said was twice as shocking as anything that's been released thus far.

"I can give you a rumor and I can give you something I think might happen," Madden told John Dennis and Gerry Callahan. "I hear there's a rumor that there will be a more shocking development from the Second Mile Foundation -- and hold on to your stomachs, boys, this is gross, I will use the only language I can -- that Jerry Sandusky and Second Mile were pimping out young boys to rich donors. That was being investigated by two prominent columnists even as I speak." http://www.nesn.com/2011/11/jerry-sandusky-rumored-to-have-been-pimping-out-young-boys-to-rich-donors-says-mark-madden.html

Madden: Sandusky a State secret
Mon Apr 4, 2011 Mark Madden

The Jerry Sandusky situation seems a matter of failure to connect certain dots, or perhaps unwillingness in that regard. Lots of people besides the former Penn State defensive coordinator have some explaining to do.

Allegations of improper conduct with an underage male first surfaced in 1998, while Sandusky was still employed by Penn State. That incident allegedly occurred in a shower at Penn State's on-campus football facility. No charges were filed.

Sandusky retired the next year, in 1999. He was 55, prime age for a coach. Odd, to say the least - especially with Joe Paterno thought even then to be ready to quit and Sandusky a likely, openly-discussed successor.

It seems logical to ask: What did Paterno know, and when did he know it? What did Penn State's administration know, and when did they know it? http://www.timesonline.com/columnists/sports/mark_madden/madden-sandusky-a-state-secret/article_863d3c82-5e6f-11e0-9ae5-001a4bcf6878.html

Penn State: Would you do better than Joe Paterno? 10 November 2011 By Kate Dailey BBC News Magazine

This week, the office of Pennsylvania's attorney general released a damning grand jury report. It outlined years of sexual abuse allegedly perpetrated by former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

Though Mr Sandusky had retired from the university in 1999, the report alleges that he raped and molested boys on Penn State's main campus for the next several years.

The report also included details of witnesses seeing the abuse and declining to call the police. There were allegations of school officials, amongst them long-time football coach Joe Paterno, receiving evidence of abuse and declining to take serious action.

The shocking behaviour did not end there: President Graham Spanier, who has since lost his job, offered his full-throated support for two university officials accused of covering up the abuse....

Conservative estimates published in the journal Science suggest that 5% to 10% of American boys have been sexually assaulted, as have 20% of girls. Some 90% of these cases are never reported.

These numbers have remained consistent for years. And the Penn State example helps demonstrate why.

"We choose not to talk about it," says Jolie Logan, chief executive of Darkness to Light, a non-profit group that trains adults to prevent abuse. "Who wants to think about people having sex with children? Because it's not comfortable to talk about, we don't." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-15668834

article mentioned above in BBC article:

Freyd, J.J., Putnam, F.W., Lyon, T.D., Becker-Blease, K. A., Cheit, R.E., Siegel, N.B., & Pezdek, K. (2005). The science of child sexual abuse. Science, 308, 501.
Child sexual abuse (CSA) involving sexual contact between an (usually male) adult and a child has been reported by 20% of women and 5-10% of men worldwide (1-3). Surveys likely underestimate prevalence due to underreporting and memory failure (4-6). Although official reports have declined somewhat in the U.S. over the past decade (7), close to 90% of sexual abuse cases are never reported to the authorities (8).

CSA is associated with serious mental and physical health problems, substance abuse, victimization, and criminality in adulthood (9-12). Mental health problems include post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and suicide (13, 14). CSA may interfere with attachment, emotional regulation, and major stress response systems (15). CSA has been used as a weapon of war and genocide and is associated with abduction and human trafficking (2)....

Most CSA is committed by family members and individuals close to the child (1), which increases the likelihood of delayed disclosure (22), unsupportive reactions by caregivers and lack of intervention (8, 23) and possible memory failure (24, 25, cf. 26). http://dynamic.uoregon.edu/~jjf/articles/science05.htm

Brendan Conway, WISN 12 News Reporter

November 8, 2011
MILWAUKEE -- An alleged encounter in the third-floor apartment of a building on the 900 block of East Knapp Street on Milwaukee's East Side over the weekend is almost too bizarre to believe but court records lay out a story of sex, violence and possible satanic activities....

According to a list of things seized from the apartment, there were a number of occult type items, including a book, the "Necromantic Ritual Book," which claims to teach consciousness with the Angel of Death on an intimate level

Police said they found a pool of blood inside the apartment and blood stains were still visible on the banisters and walls.

Chandler and the other suspect “Scarlett” are being held in the Milwaukee County Jail awaiting formal charges. http://www.wisn.com/r/29718438/detail.html

Charges Likely Filed Later This Week
November 10, 2011

MILWAUKEE -- 12 News has learned Milwaukee police arrested a second woman accused of cutting a man 300 times during a sexual encounter on the city's east side.

Both women are in jail on $150,000 bail.

According to documents obtained by 12 News, Rebecca Chandler lured an Arizona man to her apartment near Astor and Knapp streets.

According to the documents, Chandler admitted to police she cut the man while having consensual sex, but then said her roommate who is into satanic activies joined in, and the cutting got out of hand.

The man escaped the apartment Sunday night and called 911. He was found wandering the streets half-naked and bleeding. Documents show he'd been bound and tortured for two days. The district attorney's office told 12 News charges are expected to be filed later this week. http://www.wisn.com/news/29731566/detail.html

Preaching Virtue of Spanking, Even as Deaths Fuel Debate

By ERIK ECKHOLM November 6, 2011....

The pastoral mood in the hills of Tennessee offered a stark contrast to the storm raging around the country over the Pearls’ teachings on child discipline, which advocate systematic use of “the rod” to teach toddlers to submit to authority. The methods, seen as common sense by some grateful parents and as horrific by others, are modeled, Mr. Pearl is fond of saying, on “the same principles the Amish use to train their stubborn mules.”

Debate over the Pearls’ teachings, first seen on Christian Web sites, gained new intensity after the death of a third child, all allegedly at the hands of parents who kept the Pearls’ book, “To Train Up a Child,” in their homes. On Sept. 29, the parents were charged with homicide by abuse.

More than 670,000 copies of the Pearls’ self-published book are in circulation, and it is especially popular among Christian home-schoolers, who praise it in their magazines and on their Web sites. The Pearls provide instructions on using a switch from as early as six months to discourage misbehavior and describe how to make use of implements for hitting on the arms, legs or back, including a quarter-inch flexible plumbing line that, Mr. Pearl notes, “can be rolled up and carried in your pocket.” The furor in part reflects societal disagreements over corporal punishment, which conservative Christians say is called for in the Bible and which many Americans consider reasonable up to a point, even as many parents and pediatricians reject it....

Mr. Pearl, 66, and Mrs. Pearl, 60, say that blaming their book for extreme abuse by a few unstable parents is preposterous and that they explicitly counsel against acting in anger or causing a bruise. They say that their methods, properly used, yield peace and happy teenagers....

Some conservative Christian parents reject the Pearls’ teachings and have started a petition drive asking sellers like Amazon not to stock their books.

Crystal Lutton, who runs Grace-Based Discipline, one of several Christian blogs that oppose corporal punishment, said the danger with the Pearls’ methods is that “if you don’t get results, the only thing to do is to punish harder and harder.”

Foreign contractors hired Afghan 'dancing boys', WikiLeaks cable reveals

US embassy cables: Afghan government asks US to quash 'dancing boys' scandal 2 December 2010 11:37

Wednesday, 24 June 2009,
C O N F I D E N T I A L SECTION 01 OF 03 KABUL....
Summary

In a May 2009 meeting interior minister Hanif Atmar expresses deep concerns that if lives could be in danger if news leaked that foreign police trainers working for US commercial contractor DynCorp hired "dancing boys" to perform for them....

Atmar said he insisted the journalist be told that publication would endanger lives. His request was that the U.S. quash the article and release of the video. Amb Mussomeli responded that going to the journalist would give her the sense that there is a more terrible story to report. Atmar then disclosed the arrest of two Afghan National Police (ANP) and nine other Afghans (including RTC language assistants) as part of an MoI investigation into Afghan "facilitators" of the event.

The crime he was pursuing was "purchasing a service from a child," which in Afghanistan is illegal under both Sharia law and the civil code, and against the ANP Code of Conduct for police officers who might be involved. He said he would use the civil code and that, in this case, the institution of the ANP will be protected, but he worried about the image of foreign mentors. Atmar said that President Karzai had told him that his (Atmar's) "prestige" was in play in management of the Kunduz DynCorp matter and another recent event in which Blackwater contractors mistakenly killed several Afghan citizens. The President had asked him "Where is the justice?"

Foreign contractors hired Afghan 'dancing boys', WikiLeaks cable reveals - Episode fuelled Afghan demands that private security firms be brought much more under government control
Jon Boone guardian.co.uk, Thursday 2 December 2010

A scandal involving foreign contractors employed to train Afghan policemen who took drugs and paid for young "dancing boys" to entertain them in northern Afghanistan caused such panic that the interior minister begged the US embassy to try and "quash" the story, according to one of the US embassy cables released by WikiLeaks.

In a meeting with the assistant US ambassador, a panicked Hanif Atmar, the interior minister at the time of the episode last June, warned that the story would "endanger lives" and was particularly concerned that a video of the incident might be made public.

UPCOMING WEBINAR

Saturday, December 17
12 pm Pacific Time
Alikina
"Memory & Survivors"

Most survivors have questions about their memory processes at some time: 'is it true, did it happen?' or 'why can't I remember?', or even 'why do I keep having intrusive memories?'. As we heal, we also become aware of times when our memories seem different than how we've been lead to believe 'normal' memory works.

Jerry Sandusky
The former Penn State defensive coordinator was charged with sexually abusing eight boys over a 15-year period. Sandusky, 67, maintains he is innocent....

Tim Curley
The Penn State athletic director, 57, denies being told of sexual misconduct by Sandusky in 2002 but is accused of covering up allegations tied to the scandal....

Gary Schultz
As Penn State's senior vice president for finance and business — which gives him oversight of university police — Schultz, 62, has been charged with covering up abuse allegations....

Mike McQueary
In 2002, the then-graduate assistant told Paterno that he had witnessed Sandusky abusing a boy in a Penn State locker room shower. Paterno informed Curley, who later met with the graduate assistant and Schultz. McQueary, who is now an assistant coach at Penn State, reiterated his statement to the grand jury.

Jim Calhoun
A temporary worker whose job as a janitor at Penn State lasted only eight months, Calhoun told co-workers and a supervisor in 2000 that he witnessed Sandusky engaging in sexual activity with a boy in a campus locker-room shower. Several staff members later said that Calhoun, a veteran of the Korean War, was visibly shaken by what he reported seeing.

information from person that has MPD/DID

posted with permission

I have MPD/DID and was diagnosed by one of the most famous physicians, and treated by one of the most famous psychologists, but I got physically ill and had to stop treatment. This was back in the late 90's. Since then, my memories have come back on MY OWN, without a psychologist. No, I do not have a B12 deficiency because I was tested at a muscular dystrophy clinic for Pernicious anemia.

My memories of horrific abuse and torture have been helpful to the district attorney's office in Philadelphia, and I am not the only one reporting this abuse. I have had several district attorneys to my home to interview me. I don't think they would waste their time with numerous interviews if I was delusional.

I have never been integrated, I am still a multiple. This abuse and torture of a child is a gift that keeps on giving........This horrific abuse has to stop. I wonder who finances these people? I have my guesses.

I have nothing to gain financially from this, are the false memory people able to say the same? I never wrote a book, there will be no movie, but I know I am helping the Philadelphia DA's with my memories of abuse and torture.

I will die a poor women, but I have my dignity, and I know the circumstances surrounding my life. That was important to me, to know what, where and why this happened. This was my one and only goal. And to know that I have helped for the greater good, and have been a voice for so many.

Respectfully,

Judith Weiss Collins

from Sybil’s closest living relative

posted by permission from Naomi Rhode

As Shirley Mason’s (Sybil) closest living relative, I was close to her for the 30 plus years through the saga of her life journey. In fact, I was with her for several days during the week of her death, at her request, and was one of the only people that was in constant contact with her over those 30 years. I kept her identity confidential at her fervent request. Through all these years up until literally the day before she died, she verified the complete accuracy of the book, ‘Sybil’. Debbie Nathan claims that she contacted me for an interview in 2008 and that I declined. Over the years many people have contacted me for information about Shirley’s life. Not knowing their intent, always, I have declined all such interviews. If Debbie was one of those people, I do not recall the call, as I do not keep records of every call in a busy business life. I apologize for this, but I do not recall her calling. Knowing Dr. Connie Wilbur, and Flora Schreiber, also, the book concerns me greatly. It is an attack on their credibility, their research, and their professionalism. And, the book is a complete attack on the person I loved, Shirley Mason.

Shirley did not die a recluse. Shirley was a loving, and productive woman until her final, lengthy bout with cancer. She painted, and taught painting. She sold her paintings. She corresponded with friends, and regularly with us. She was a woman of strong spiritual faith in God, loved her books and her music, and loved our family greatly. She chose, however, to live carefully and confidentially because she was adamant that her identity not be known. She was very protective of our family and any recourse her life and story may have on us.

Canadian child pornography, gun usage, criminal harassment and drug offence crimes has increased(1), with sexualised violence within families four times higher for girls than for boys(2).
