Ex-DJ Chris Denning admits child sex offences, Does Religious Liberty Include the Right to Harass and Harm

Ex-DJ Chris Denning admits child sex offences
22 August 2016

Former BBC DJ Chris Denning has pleaded guilty to 21 child sex offences committed between 1969 and 1986. The 75-year-old, from London, admitted the abuse of 11 boys as young as eight. He denied three other offences.

Former BBC DJ Chris Denning has pleaded guilty to 21 child sex offences committed between 1969 and 1986.

The 75-year-old, from London, admitted the abuse of 11 boys as young as eight. He denied three other offences.

Denning, who was arrested in a police inquiry into the Walton Hop Disco for teenagers in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, will be sentenced on 6 October.

He was part of the original line-up that launched Radio 1 in 1967, but left two years later.

The prosecution said it did not intend to proceed with a trial on the three charges to which Denning had pleaded not guilty.

He is currently serving a 13-year jail term for sexual assaults against 24 victims aged nine to 16 from the 1960s to 1980s....

Denning had a number of previous convictions for abusing young boys.

In 1974, he was convicted of gross indecency and indecent assault but was not imprisoned.

He was then jailed for 18 months in 1985 for gross indecency, and in 1988 he received a three-year sentence, this time for indecent assault and possession of indecent images.

In 1996, he was handed a 10-week sentence for publishing indecent articles.

He was arrested in the Czech Republic in 1997 and eventually jailed in 2000 by a Prague court for four and a half years for having sexual contact with underage teenage boys.

The UK tried and failed to have Denning extradited from the Czech Republic, but in 2005 he was arrested at Heathrow Airport, having arrived from Austria.

In January 2006, a British court jailed him for four years after he admitted five charges of indecent assault on boys under 16 during the 1970s and 80s.

He was then extradited to Slovakia, where he was given a five-year sentence in 2008 for producing indecent images of children.

Does Religious Liberty Include the Right to Harass and Harm?
By Marcia A. Hamilton On 8/21/16

The religious liberty movement of this era will go down in infamy as a drive to discriminate against the LGBTQ community and to put women and children in their “places:" subservient to men.

It is time to become more realistic and authentic about the moves being taken by conservative religious lobbyists and the so-called “religious liberty” they demand....

Today, in this era of demands for extreme religious liberty, those seeking extreme protections have made it difficult for elected representatives to protect the potential victims of religious actors, because the religious lobbyists have kept their agendas close to the vest while furiously waving the religious liberty flag. Civil rights organizations fell for the rhetoric in the early 1990s, but since then have recoiled from the discriminatory agendas as they have surfaced.

The battle to keep religiously motivated discriminatory agendas secret while demanding “religious liberty” to discriminate continues. Two recent examples provide further evidence of the contemporary drive by religious entities to discriminate and to do so under the radar, without concern or regard for those they will harm....

The bottom line is that the religious organization is simply being required to state the basis for its claimed need to avoid the law that applies to every other school. If it is not motivated by a religious belief, the exemption is illegitimate anyway....

This is, at base, an argument for absolute autonomy, theocracy and/or anarchy. It is indefensible in a diverse democratic society....

Yet, the government has no obligation to perpetuate any religious entity, and indeed I would argue that the Establishment Clause forbids the government from taking sides to preserve a religious institution. A religious entity must prove its bona fides to believers and the public in the private marketplace in religion or shrivel away. After all, religious institutions are live entities in a dynamic relationship with the culture....

Justice Scalia spent his last hours with members of this secretive society of elite hunters

By Amy Brittain and Sari Horwitz February 24
When Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died 12 days ago at a West Texas ranch, he was among high-ranking members of an exclusive fraternity for hunters called the International Order of St. Hubertus, an Austrian society that dates back to the 1600s.

After Scalia’s death Feb. 13, the names of the 35 other guests at the remote resort, along with details about Scalia’s connection to the hunters, have remained largely unknown. A review of public records shows that some of the men who were with Scalia at the ranch are connected through the International Order of St. Hubertus, whose members gathered at least once before at the same ranch for a celebratory weekend.

Members of the worldwide, male-only society wear dark-green robes emblazoned with a large cross and the motto “Deum Diligite Animalia Diligentes,” which means “Honoring God by honoring His creatures,” according to the group’s website. Some hold titles, such as Grand Master, Prior and Knight Grand Officer. The Order’s name is in honor of Hubert, the patron saint of hunters and fishermen....

The society’s U.S. chapter launched in 1966 at the famous Bohemian Club in San Francisco, which is associated with the all-male Bohemian Grove — one of the most well-known secret societies in the country.

In 2010, Poindexter hosted a group of 53 members of the Houston chapter of the International Order of St. Hubertus at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, according to a Houston society publication. A number of members from Mexico were also part of the ranch festivities that included “three days of organized shoots and ‘gala’ lunches and dinners....

From Houston, Scalia and Foster chartered a plane without the marshals to the Cibolo Creek Ranch airstrip. In a statement after Scalia died, the U.S. Marshals Service said that Scalia had declined a security detail while at the ranch....

Law enforcement officials told The Post that they had no knowledge of the International Order of St. Hubertus or its connection to Poindexter and ranch guests. The officials said the FBI had declined to investigate Scalia’s death when they were told by the marshals that he died from natural causes. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/justice-scalia-spent-his-last-hours-with-members-of-this-secretive-society-of-elite-hunters/2016/02/24/1d77af38-db20-11e5-891a-4ed04f4213e8_story.html

BBC missed opportunities to stop sexual predator Jimmy Savile, inquiry finds

Thursday February 25, 2016
An inquiry clears the BBC of wrongdoing but points out serious failings in its handling of Jimmy Savile, a celebrated TV presenter revealed to have been one of Britain's most prolific sex offenders.

An investigation into the Jimmy Savile sex abuse scandal cleared the BBC of wrongdoing Thursday, even as it painted a damning portrait of an institution where employees were afraid to raise even serious concerns about sexual misconduct for fear of upsetting celebrity talent or making the corporation look bad.

Savile, a BBC television presenter and popular charity figure who died in October 2011, is believed to be one of Britain's most prolific sex offenders, often targeting minors.

The review initiated by the BBC blamed the institution's internal culture for being behind the failure to sound the alarm on Savile's predatory activity. It was only after Savile's death that the extent of his crimes became clear — touching off a national shock wave of rage and introspection about how best to deal with sexual abuse charges, particularly involving the famous.

“Celebrities were treated with kid gloves and were virtually untouchable,” said Janet Smith, a former Court of Appeal judge who conducted the inquiry, describing a BBC culture of not wanting to “rock the boat.”...

Smith's review said the Savile abuse incidents dated all the way back to 1959. She identified 72 victims of Savile, both male and female — and one was only 8 years old.

But girls who raised concerns about Savile were treated as a “nuisance.” In one case in 1969, a girl who was molested on the “Top of the Pops” program while standing next to Savile on the podium was “ejected from the building.”

The inquiry also concluded that another BBC star, sports presenter Stuart Hall, 86, also used his celebrity to shield his activities, often plying his victims with alcohol.

The Hall investigation was carried out by another former Court of Appeal judge, Linda Dobbs, because Smith had a conflict of interest. Dobbs found 21 victims of Hall, who was jailed in 2013 after pleading guilty to multiple charges of indecent assault.... http://www.latimes.com/world/la-fg-britain-bbc-jimmy-savile-20160225-story.html

Testimony begins in Gadsden toddler 'ritual' killing trial

William Thornton February 25, 2016
Etowah County prosecutors today told jurors that the body of a 20-month-old girl, hacked to death, was found in 2013 in a duffel bag cast among trash in a field next to a dead dog.

Today saw the beginning of testimony in the trial of Stephon Lindsay, 38, accused of killing his daughter, Maliyah Tashay Lindsay, almost three years ago in what some family members termed a "ritual" killing.

Gadsden police discovered the body of Maliyah Lindsay in a wooded area at the dead end of Plainview Street in Gadsden on March 12, 2013 after Stephon Lindsay was arrested in connection with the child's disappearance.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Marcus Reid said testimony would show Stephon killed Maliyah in accordance with his religious beliefs, using a long knife while the child's mother was sick following giving birth a few weeks before....

Stephon would occasionally read and write in a dark green binder that he called his Bible, she said. He had a passion for horror, zombie and martial arts movies, she said, and would occasionally run outside into the rain to "do the stuff they do in the movies." He collected knives and swords, she said, but also had a sense of humor and helped cook and clean and care for Maliyah.... http://www.al.com/news/anniston-gadsden/index.ssf/2016/02/testimony_begins_in_gadsden_to.html

Stopping Child Abuse: Paid Family Leave Reduced The Number Of Child
Abuse Cases In California
Feb 25, 2016 By Justin Caba
In 2004, California introduced its Paid Family Leave (PFL) program, which allows for up to six weeks of paid leave for the birth of a newborn or to take care of a sick family member in a 12-month period. Despite there being proven benefits to having paid family leave, a number of other states have not followed suit. A recent study published in the journal Injury Prevention aimed to compare to the impact of the PFL program in California to states that have not enacted any parental leave laws.

Researchers from the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gathered data on the number of children hospitalized from deliberately inflicted head injuries between 1995 and 2011 in California. They compared this data to that from seven other states without any paid leave policies: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin.

Admission rates for abusive head injuries dropped significantly among children under the age of 2 following the PFL enactment. When researchers incorporated influential factors, like unemployment rates and low education levels, the PFL program led to a drop of 5.1 admissions per 100,000 children under the age of 1. The policy also led to a 2.8 per 100,000 drop in admissions among children under 2.... http://www.medicaldaily.com/paid-family-leave-stopping-child-abuse-375161

Bill Cosby to Be Deposed by Sept. 30 in Molestation Lawsuit: 'We Are Looking Forward to That Day,' Says Accuser's Lawyer

By Tara Fowler  07/29/2015
Bill Cosby will be deposed in the next two months in a molestation lawsuit, according to attorney Gloria Allred.

Allred, who represents Judy Huth and 16 other Cosby accusers, said Tuesday that a California judge has ordered the comedian to give a deposition in the civil suit filed by her client, according to a statement obtained by PEOPLE. That deposition, she said, is scheduled to come no later than Sept. 30....

Huth has claimed that Cosby, 78, molested her inside the Playboy Mansion when she was just 15 years old. She is just one of the nearly 50 women who've accused Cosby of some form of sexual abuse.

While the statute of limitations has expired for a criminal case, California law allows allegations of underage sexual abuse to come to court as a civil lawsuit even decades after the alleged incident happened.

Cosby and his lawyers have continually denied the allegations against him.... http://www.people.com/article/bill-cosby-to-be-deposed-molestation-lawsuit

LAPD's Bill Cosby investigation could help establish pattern of abuse
  By Richard Winton
Of the many misconduct allegations made by women against Bill Cosby in Los Angeles over the decades, L.A. police are actively investigating just one.

It involves claims by a woman who says Cosby assaulted her at the Playboy Mansion in 2008, when she was 18.

She alleges Cosby gave her a drink that caused her to black out. When she awoke, she said, she found herself naked on a bed in the mansion with Cosby biting her toes with his pants around his ankles, according to her attorney. Cosby’s attorneys have denied the accusations.

In January, Chloe Goins, 24, was interviewed for 2 1/2 half hours by an LAPD detective. Officials say they are continuing to investigate, and prosecutors say detectives have not presented them with a case.

Earlier this year, the L.A. district attorney rejected another Cosby case presented by the LAPD because it happened decades ago. Goins’ case is more recent but also faces challenges.

Barbara Kay: To understand Bill Cosby, start with Alfred C. Kinsey

Barbara Kay  July 29, 2015
....But the most sophisticated strategy was the “Kinsey approach.” Hefner was a huge fan of Alfred C. Kinsey, an Indiana University zoologist, whose 1948 report, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, was the Sexual Revolution’s Ur-text (a “Human Female” volume came out in 1953). Hefner boasted of being “Kinsey’s pamphleteer,” proud to bruit the often-cited Kinsey mantra: “fornicate early, fornicate often, fornicate in every possible way” (including bestiality, which Kinsey described in more tender language than he applied to human sex).

....Young Lotharios may have gotten lucky with this ploy, but they were pushing what later researchers proved was bad science. Kinsey’s  “research” claimed such suspiciously high ratios of extramarital sex, abortions, homosexuality, bisexuality, bestiality and incest in the general population as to suggest that the only abnormal or deviant sexual condition was abstinence. According to W. Allen Wallis, past president of the American Statistical Association: “They were touting [Kinsey’s book] everywhere even though the statistics were appalling.”

Kinsey’s team, some of whom later lent their names to pedophilia advocacy, claimed that sexuality begins at birth, concluding it was normal for children to engage in peer and inter-generational sex. In the history of social science, no other academic researcher of early child development (Piaget, Maslow et. al) has publicly asserted that sexual intercourse, including incest, has no harmful effect on children. How did Kinsey arrive at this erroneous conclusion? Unethically.

For example (see Tables 30-33 of his Male volume), Kinsey reports that in sex-play experiments of male children from infancy to mid-teens, most arrived at orgasm, the youngest boy observed to climax being “two months.” A four-year old was reported to have had 26 climaxes in 24 hours. How did this non-consensual experimentation take place at all? This is not science. This is child abuse.

Kinsey’s claims were also based on feedback he solicited from convicted pedophiles. Rapists told Kinsey that their child victims enjoyed the sex (a common delusion amongst pedophiles), which he reported as fact. He protected one rapist actively being sought by the police, and accorded legitimacy to the views of another, on record for raping 800 children, the youngest two months of age. Not exactly a “community” sampling.... http://news.nationalpost.com/full-comment/barbara-kay-to-understand-bill-cosby-start-with-alfred-c-kinsey

Meirion Jones: 'Everyone on right side of the Savile argument has been forced out of the BBC'

  Dominic Ponsford  29 July 2015

Three days after finishing work on Panorama documentary The Fake Sheikh Exposed, producer Meirion Jones was told his services were no longer required by the programme.

His previous job as head of investigations at Newsnight had been filled in his absence. He was effectively out of a job.

After 26 years at the BBC, Jones (pictured above, Reuters) felt like this career at the corporation had come to an end and he was being squeezed out.

Jones believes he was punished because he tried to expose the Jimmy Savile scandal at the BBC and spoke out about the way his Newsnight investigation of December 2011 was suppressed.

Liz MacKean, who worked on the Savile story with Jones, left after 23 years with the corporation in April last year. She also felt she no longer had a future with the BBC.

Speaking out in detail for the first time since he left the BBC in February, Jones paints a picture of a corporation which appears to have failed to learn the lessons of the biggest scandal in its history.

He believes those on the side of exposing the Savile scandal mistakes have been sidelined and encouraged to leave the corporation – while others involved in suppressing the Savile story have kept their jobs....

Press Gazette put Jones’ criticisms to the BBC.

A spokesperson said: "Meirion Jones has made his views known before and we have always been clear that nobody was forced out of the BBC for exposing the Savile scandal.... http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/meirion-jones-speaks-out-everyone-who-was-right-side-savile-argument-has-been-forced-out-bbc

Smithsonian To Post Sign At Exhibition Featuring Bill Cosby-Owned Art, Alexis Jay on child sex abuse: ‘Politicians wanted to keep a lid on it’, Rotherham victims

Smithsonian To Post Sign At Exhibition Featuring Bill Cosby-Owned Art
July 14, 2015 Krishnadev Calamur

The Smithsonian's National Museum of African Art in Washington will post a sign Wednesday telling visitors an exhibition that includes art owned by Bill Cosby and his wife, Camille, is "fundamentally about the artworks and the artists who created them, not Mr. Cosby," representatives for the Smithsonian Institution say.

The sign, which will be posted at 10 a.m., comes amid allegations of sexual misconduct directed against Cosby by more than two dozen women. Some of them say he drugged and raped them. Cosby has not been charged in any of the alleged assaults.

Last week it emerged that the comedian testified in 2005 he obtained the sedative Quaalude with the intent of giving the drug to women with whom he wanted to have sex, and he acknowledged giving it to at least one woman. The Los Angeles Police Department says it is conducting at least one current criminal investigation into allegations of sexual assault against Cosby....

Alexis Jay on child sex abuse: ‘Politicians wanted to keep a lid on it’
Her devastating Rotherham report blew open the national debate on child sex abuse. Now the ‘retired’ social worker is investigating historic claims on an unprecedented scale, taking on Westminster, the BBC and NHS
Helen Pidd  Monday 13 July 2015

Alexis Jay officially retired two years ago – not that you’d notice. In 2013 she stepped down from her role as Scotland’s chief social work adviser, shortly after being awarded an OBE. But rather than tending to her garden she ended up digging up horrific claims of child sexual exploitation in Rotherham. That job done, the scalps of many officials taken, she moved on to sort out Northern Ireland’s safeguarding children boards.

But last week the 66-year-old began her biggest task yet, when she joined the panel of what has been described as Britain’s most complicated and wide-reaching statutory inquiry ever. The independent inquiry into child sex abuse (IICSA) is expected to take five years investigating claims of abuse in faith and religious organisations, the criminal justice system, local authorities and national institutions such as the BBC, NHS and Ministry of Defence....

“By victims we are not talking about children who were at risk of sexual exploitation, who were friendly with victims or who moved in the same circle,” she told the journalists. “The 1,400 victims are those who had actually experienced sexual exploitation.” Determined that no one could bat away her findings, she had produced a 153-page report that spelled out in plain language the appalling abuse suffered by children aged 10-16 in the South Yorkshire town (Rotherham) between 1997 and 2013....

Rotherham child sex abuse: Police 'ripped up files'

Rotherham child sex abuse: Police 'ripped up files'
10 November 2014

Police in Rotherham tore up paperwork relating to one child sex abuse victim and stopped another from being medically examined, the BBC has been told.

One woman claimed a policeman called her a liar after she reported being abused aged 15, and the other alleges police prevented her being examined after she was abused aged 13.

Both were speaking to BBC Inside Out.

South Yorkshire Police said both cases were now with the police watchdog.

A report in September by Prof Alexis Jay found 1,400 children had been abused in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013 by men of mainly Pakistani heritage.

The abuse they suffered included beatings, rape and trafficking to various towns and cities in England.

Two women told BBC Inside Out Yorkshire that police not only ignored, but actively obstructed investigations into their abuse.

The two cases happened eight years apart. The women, given the pseudonyms Jenny and Carol, are part of a group of 32 preparing to sue South Yorkshire Police and Rotherham Council.

Their cases span nearly two decades from the 1990s until 2007....

Former Radio 1 DJ Chris Denning admits 29 child sex abuse charges
Denning, 73, pleads guilty to offences against boys aged nine to 16 between 1967 and 1984, but faces trial on 12 other charges

Press Association theguardian.com, Tuesday 5 August 2014

The former Radio 1 DJ Chris Denning has pleaded guilty to a string of sex offences against young boys.

The 73-year-old admitted 29 charges involving boys as young as nine when he appeared at Southwark crown court in London on Tuesday. He denied a further 12 charges and will face trial on 24 November.

Teen accused in 'satanic' murder of girl to stand trial as adult
KTRK By Deborah Wrigley Wednesday, August 06, 2014
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- At age 16, Victor Manuel Alas is technically a juvenile. Today, before a judge, he was deemed old enough to stand trial as an adult for capital murder.

Alas and an alleged 17-year-old accomplice are accused in an especially horrific killing six months ago in clear lake. A 15-year-old girl named Corriann Cervantes was found dead inside a vacant apartment on El Camino Real.

Investigators said at the time that the victim had been stabbed with a screwdriver, beaten and sexually assaulted. Her killers are also accused of carving an upside down crucifix on her body.

Jose E Reyes, 17, was arrested shortly after the February murder. Alas was taken into custody shortly after that....

As for the motivation behind Cervantes' murder, prosecutors read from a police report that said Alas told detectives, "He did it so he could sell his soul to the devil."....

BBC TV chiefs ‘knew of Jimmy Savile’s sex abuse,’ says MP
AN MP last night called for former BBC chiefs Mark Thompson and Helen Boaden to be hauled before Parliament to fully account for who knew what over the Jimmy Savile sex scandal.

By: Giles Sheldrick
Published: Thu, December 12, 2013

Tory Rob Wilson demanded action after a tape recording released yesterday suggests the disgraced DJ’s deeds were known by senior staff but this crucial evidence was omitted from the findings of an official investigation.

The five-minute edited recording of a conversation between former news executive Nick Pollard and an unnamed journalist was posted on the Guido Fawkes political blog.

Mr Pollard led a review into the sequence of events surrounding Newsnight’s shelved report into Savile’s activities which eventually led to a crisis at the corporation.

The Pollard review cost a staggering £2.8million but there were calls last night for a re-examination of the evidence surrounding the scandal.

In the recording Mr Pollard explains that he did not include in his review a claim by the BBC’s former director of news Helen Boaden that she had told then-director-general Mark Thompson that a proposed Newsnight report was looking into sex abuse allegations against late DJ Jimmy Savile – something that Mr Thompson denies....

BBC stands by report on dropped Newsnight investigation into Jimmy Savile abuse
12 Dec 2013  By Sam Adams

Questions were raised about the report's validity after Nick Pollard, who led the review, was taped discussing his failure to include certain evidence

The BBC has stood by the findings of a report into the dropped Newsnight investigation into the activities of paedophile DJ Jimmy Savile.

Questions were raised about the report's validity after Nick Pollard, who led the review, was taped discussing his failure to include certain evidence.

But Pollard has said he stands by the conclusions of the report and was tonight backed by the corporation's Trust, which insisted the findings were "robust".

Jimmy Savile: IPCC say Greater Manchester Police in the clear over complaints  11 Nov 2013

Police had 17 reports by women from the region claiming abuse by the DJ during the 1960s

A watchdog says it won’t take action against Greater Manchester Police over the way the force handled complaints about Jimmy Savile.

When the DJ was exposed as a serial sex abuser last year, some 17 women came forward and reported to GMP that they had been molested by Savile from the 1960s.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission launched an investigation amid reports that police officers elsewhere in the country helped Savile cover up his crimes.

Now the watchdog has announced it will conduct a further enquiry into a West Yorkshire Police inspector who ‘acted on behalf of’ Savile inappropriately by contacting Surrey Police ahead of a police interview in 2009....

Pervert Jimmy Savile manipulated BBC security staff so they would allow girls into his dressing room
6 Nov 2013 By Andy Lines

Handwritten message reveals how the twisted celebrity deliberately cultivated a phony friendship with doormen at the corporation

Serial pervert Jimmy Savile frequently manipulated BBC security staff so they would allow girls into his dressing room.

A handwritten message, published by the Mirror today, reveals how the twisted celebrity deliberately cultivated a phony friendship with doormen at the corporation so they would never question his requests.

The sickeningly chummy note, addressed to “BBC security friends” and signed with his customary smiling face drawn inside an expansive J at the start of his name, was scrawled on notepaper from Stoke Mandeville hospital where he was a fundraiser.

A BBC insider said: “It perfectly illustrates the position of power Savile had.  “He flattered and made friends with security staff and this enabled him to carry out his horrendous attacks.

"He even wrote this on headed notepaper of the National Spinal Injuries Centre. This was not unusual.”

Savile used BBC studios to abuse dozens of girls and young women....

Jimmy Savile NHS abuse probe: 'Up to 30' hospitals involved  14 October 2013
Up to 30 hospitals are now under investigation as part of the inquiry into Jimmy Savile's alleged abuse of patients at NHS hospitals, the BBC understands.

Inquiries had originally just focused on Broadmoor and Stoke Mandeville and Leeds General Infirmary, with a further 10 trusts added in January.
A final report will be published in 2014.

The late DJ is believed to have abused hundreds of victims.

The former BBC presenter of Top Of The Pops and Jim'll Fix It, who also worked as a Radio 1 DJ and received a knighthood in 1990, died aged 84 in October 2011 - a year before the allegations were broadcast in an ITV documentary.

Revelations that Savile had sexually abused children prompted hundreds of victims to come forward, including those who said they were attacked on BBC premises and at a number of other institutions.

Savile had a bedroom at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, an office and living quarters at Broadmoor, and widespread access to Leeds General Infirmary....

The director of public prosecutions is also reviewing decisions not to prosecute Savile in 2009.

Defense: Ohio Kidnapper Fits Profile of Sociopath, Jimmy Savile BBC abuse payouts: 120 victims of paedophile presenter to receive average of £33,000 from BBC

Defense: Ohio Kidnapper Fits Profile of Sociopath
CLEVELAND August 19, 2013 (AP)

The lawyers who defended a Cleveland man who held three women captive for a decade say their client clearly fits the profile of sociopathic disorder and that they hope researchers study him for clues that could be used to stop other predators.

Attorneys Craig Weintraub and Jaye Schlachet told the Cleveland Jewish News in a wide-ranging interview that while the public can easily label Ariel Castro a monster and evil, studies must be conducted to determine whether his issue is genetic, organic or "limited simply to mental health."

Castro admitted to kidnapping and repeatedly raping the women until they escaped his home in May. He has was sentenced this month to life in prison plus 1,000 years and during his sentencing attributed his "sickness" to an addiction to pornography and sexual abuse he himself suffered as a child.

But, Weintraub said, "there are a lot of people walking the streets who were victims of sexual abuse and addicted to pornography who aren't kidnapping women off the streets, holding them hostage for 10 years and terrorizing them.

"A lot of people don't do that. They get help. For whatever reason, he lacked the insight to get help, or desire, which exacerbated his mental health issues."....

Jimmy Savile abuse payouts: 120 victims of paedophile presenter to receive average of £33,000 from BBC     By Tom Pettifor
21 Aug 2013

The BBC is expected to pay out around £4million – less than the £4.1million the broadcaster gave its executive board in 12 months

The BBC is expected to pay out around £4million to 120 of paedophile presenter Jimmy Savile’s alleged victims.

It works out at an average of £33,000 per person – but is less than the £4.1million the broadcaster gave its executive board in 12 months.

The level of compensation is expected to be agreed towards the end of the year when former high court judge Dame Janet Smith, 71, publishes the findings of her probe into the “culture and practices” at the BBC during the Savile era.

The review has uncovered two more alleged suspects linked to the pervert, who died aged 84 in 2011.

Solicitor Alan Collins, whose firm Pannone represents a number of victims, said: “Many have suffered substantial damage because of the sexual abuse they were subjected to by the now disgraced Jimmy Savile and to all right thinking people they should come first.”

He added: “To think that any compensation they receive would be a fraction of that paid to executives in the wake of the scandal seems manifestly unjust.”

He confirmed he is still being contacted by alleged Savile victims....

About 40 of the Savile abuse claimants were quizzed in detail about what allegedly happened to them while giving evidence in Dame Janet’s review. She heard allegations that women were abused by Savile on BBC premises or in outside broadcast vehicles while other staff were present....

The police watchdog has been blasted for probing just one force out of nine accused of failing to investigate Jimmy Savile.

So far only the West Yorkshire force has referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Now forces in Surrey, Sussex, Thames Valley, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Cheshire, North Yorkshire and the Met have been asked to explain why they did not do the same.

A Savile victim said last night: “The police shouldn’t be allowed to get away with it....

Ariel Castro faces 329 charges for rape, kidnapping

Donna Leinwand Leger, USA TODAY June 8, 2013
The indictment charges Castro as a 'sexually violent predator' who committed the murder and rapes in the course of a kidnapping

Ariel Castro, 52, the former school bus driver accused of holding three women captive in his Cleveland home for a decade, was charged late Friday with murder and more than 300 counts of rape and kidnapping.

The Cuyahoga County grand jury's 329-count indictment charges Castro with one count of aggravated murder for allegedly terminating one of his captives' pregnancies, 139 counts of rape and 177 charges of kidnapping, seven counts of gross sexual imposition, three counts of felony assault and one count of possession of criminal tools dating from the time of the first woman's disappearance until February 2007.

County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty said in a statement that the investigation is still underway. Additional charges could follow in a superseding indictment.

The indictment charges Castro as a "sexually violent predator" who committed the murder and rapes in the course of a kidnapping. Those charges are considered aggravating factors that call for stiffer penalties. The murder charge is tied to one victim's fourth pregnancy, the indictment said....

Jimmy Savile photograph proves he took out Rampton patients
SERIAL sex abuser Jimmy Savile was photographed with potentially dangerous patients from high security Rampton mental hospital on a fun day trip to Scarborough, writes James Murray.
James Murray  Sun, June 9, 2013

Health chiefs had doubted Sunday Express revelations in March that Savile took inmates from the “Broadmoor of the North” on two extraordinary day trips to the Yorkshire resort in the Seventies, saying Savile had visited just once.

However, an investigation by Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust found 10 patients and some staff took a coach trip with Savile on August 2, 1971....

Jimmy Savile: BBC warned 40 years ago of risk to teenage girls
The BBC was officially warned more than 40 years ago it was putting girls in the Top of the Pops audience at risk of sexual predators.
By Robert Mendick, and Edward Malnick   05 Jun 2013

A leading QC led an investigation into sexual misconduct at the corporation’s flagship music programme in 1972 following concerns at the time and uncovered what he described as “immorality”.

But the inquiry’s conclusions were kept secret for four decades and only unearthed after a Freedom of Information request by The Telegraph.

The emergence of the 64-page report - which was circulated to the then director general and chairman - will further fuel allegations that the BBC failed to protect teenage girls from Jimmy Savile, the corporation’s then most feted star who was unmasked last year as Britain’s most prolific sex offender. It will also bolster a series of legal claims being brought by Savile’s victims against the BBC....

A BBC spokeswoman said: “In 1971 allegations of corruption at Top of The Pops were made by a newspaper. The BBC took these allegations extremely seriously and commissioned Brian Neill QC to prepare an independent report to establish what had happened....

BBC: New Child Abuse Allegations Emerge  5/31/2013
Twenty current or former employees of the U.K. public broadcaster have faced a total of 36 allegations since the Jimmy Savile scandal last fall.

Twenty BBC employees have faced a total of 36 allegations of sexually abusing children and teenagers since the Jimmy Savile scandal rocked the U.K. public broadcaster last year, according to the Guardian....

The complaints, regarding an unknown number of victims under the age of 18, have come to light in the six months since October, according to the response to a Freedom of Information request to the BBC....

The complaints were among a total of 152 recent and past allegations of sexual abuse against 81 BBC employees and freelancers, including 48 about Savile.

Half of the accused are current members of BBC staff or contributors said the Guardian, and cases against five are being examined by the police. Three people have been suspended pending the outcome of the police investigations, it said.

‘Some women enjoy rape,’ Tel Aviv judge says
Retired magistrate Nissim Yeshaya makes inflammatory remark while hearing appeal in the case of rape of 13-year-old girl
By Gavriel Fiske June 5, 2013

A judge in Tel Aviv sparked outrage on Wednesday after he reportedly remarked, during an appeals hearing on a rape case several days ago, that some women enjoy rape.
Nissim Yeshaya later apologized for his remark....

The hearing involved the case of a 13-year-old Israeli girl who was raped by four Palestinian teenagers from the Shuafat refugee camp six years ago.

The four were captured, convicted and imprisoned, but the Defense Ministry ruled that the rape was not a “hostile act” — that is, an act of political aggression. This meant the victim was not be entitled to government compensation and other benefits which terror victims receive. The Defense Ministry oversees criminal cases involving West Bank Palestinians....

Sex cult leader who paraded his girlfriend around on a leash is jailed for three years
By Daily Mail Reporter 5 June 2013

The leader of a sex cult who paraded his girlfriend round a town centre on a leash has been jailed for three years.  Inspired by science fiction novels Lee Thompson, 34, launched the cult from his pebble-dashed semi-detached house in Darlington.

His followers lead a sadomasochistic lifestyle inspired by a series of 1960s fantasy novels, Chronicles of Gor. In the books, written by US college professor John Norman, women are viewed as natural slaves to men.

Heavily-tattooed Thompson, a self-styled sex master, came to the attention of police when he paraded his girlfriend round the town on a leash as she wore a dog collar and wrist cuffs.  Businesses in the town centre were incensed by his behaviour and the local butcher's banned him from his store.

Thompson claimed that his grandmother was a pagan high priestess and she passed on her powers to him. Yesterday he was jailed for three years for forcing one of his lover's to have sex with other men against her will.

At Teesside Crown Court, Thompson - who describes himself as a pagan - admitted two counts of procuring a woman to have sexual intercourse....

Thompson had a conviction for serious sexual assault, and one for making threats to kill, for which he was sent for treatment to Rampton Secure Hospital.  After the case Detective Constable Scott Denham said: 'He is a self-styled sex cult leader. He is a very intimidating character with a very forceful personality. He has children all over the world.'

Childhood neglect affects adult close-relationship capacity
By: SHERRY BOSCHERT, Clinical Psychiatry News Digital Network

SAN FRANCISCO – Childhood neglect correlated with impaired capacity for close social relationships as an adult in a study of 114 nonpsychotic psychiatric inpatients.

The difficulty for patients with a history of childhood neglect centered more in maintaining than in starting close social relationships as adults, Thachell Tanis and Lisa J. Cohen, Ph.D., reported in a press briefing and a poster presentation at the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association....

The deficits were most striking in patients’ capacity for enduring relationships, said Dr. Cohen, professor of clinical psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York. Childhood neglect as a whole, for example, correlated with an 81% greater negative effect on adult capacity for enduring relationships, compared with the negative effect on capacity for intimacy.

Sexual Abuse of Children with Disabilities
By James R. Marsh on June 4, 2013

According to the 2010 Administration on Children Youth and Families (ACYF) report, more than 3 million reports of child maltreatment were made in 2009. Of those cases, 10 percent involved sexual abuse, and 11 percent of sexual abuse victims reported having a disability.

The Vera Institute of Justice's Center on Victimization and Safety recently partnered with the Ms. Foundation for Women to research factors contributing to the sexual abuse of children with disabilities and determine possible action steps for prevention.

Sexual Abuse of Children with Disabilities: A National Snapshot Nancy Smith • Sandra Harrell    Issue Brief • March 2013
Highlights

Children with disabilities are at higher risk for child sexual abuse than children without disabilities. The risk of sexual abuse is excaberated and heightened because of unique dynamics related to disability and the supports these children receive.

There is an alarming lack of primary prevention efforts geared to preventing sexual abuse of children with disabilities.

Children with disabilities who experience sexual abuse are less likely to receive the services and supports they need to heal and seek justice....

Northern Ireland abuse inquiry calls for Australian victims to come forward

By Europe correspondent Barbara Miller, ABC Updated June 5, 2013

A woman in Northern Ireland looks at a billboard asking victims of abuse at government and religious-run institutions to come forward

An inquiry into institutional abuse in Northern Ireland wants to hear from dozens of potential victims who were sent to Australia as child migrants.  The says it has uncovered information suggesting 112 children were sent mainly in the post-war years from Northern Ireland to Australia.

Many of the child migrants are believed to have gone from Catholic-run institutions to comparable institutions in Western Australia.  The inquiry's chair Sir Anthony Hart says before they left Northern Ireland the children may have been subject to a variety of abuse.

"We have to consider whether they might have been physically abused, whether they might have been sexually abused, but in addition we take a broad view of what is abuse, we include emotional abuse, such as humiliation of children. It may also include simple neglect, not feeding people properly, not clothing them properly," he said.

Sir Anthony, a retired High Court judge, says he accepts it may be difficult for people to come forward, but says the inquiry is keen to hear their stories....

Google donates just 90 seconds' profit to charity policing child abuse

Internet giant pledged only £20,000 to Internet Watch Foundation last year, despite multibillion-dollar turnover
    Josh Halliday and Alexandra Topping
The Guardian, Friday 31 May 2013

Google donated little more than £20,000 last year to the charity responsible for policing child abuse images online – the equivalent of 90 seconds' profit for the internet firm.
The search giant was one of a number of firms, including Facebook and Microsoft, that pledged relatively small  amounts to the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) in 2012, despite their multibillion-dollar turnovers.

Facebook made a baseline donation of around £10,000 and Microsoft's Bing search engine gave about £20,000,  according to the IWF's own records....

Google was singled out for criticism by Liz Longhurst, whose daughter Jane was murdered by extreme pornography user Graham Coutts in 2003, prompting her to campaign for internet firms to ban such images. She said internet firms must "get their act together" and start tackling violent online imagery. "What annoys me immensely is
that Google won't block these sites. They say we've got to have freedom. All I ask them is where was my daughter's freedom – tell me that."

There have been calls for Google to enforce its "safe search" option as the default setting, which would block pornographic material in search results. However, insiders insisted the move would be ineffectual as the stricter setting operates as an algorithm for legal content – and child abuse imagery is illegal, so is covered by extra blocking measures.

Scott Rubin, Google's director of communications outside America, said the company has a "zero-tolerance approach" on child abuse images and added: "The SafeSearch filter, which is designed to prevent sexually explicit material of all kinds from showing up in your search results, should not be conflated or confused with our dedication to keeping illegal abuse imagery out of our products. We don't rely simply on filtering
technology to block child abuse images; we go beyond that....

Google in firing line over net child porn images
GOOGLE will come under intense pressure this week to show “moral leadership” and take action against a "tsunami” of internet child pornography.
By: James Fielding  Sun, June 2, 2013

Police are struggling to cope, with reports of online images showing children being abused shooting up by 40 per cent in the past year. Images depicting rape or torture account for 61 per cent while the victims are getting younger, with 88 per  cent now aged under 10.

John Carr, an adviser to the Government on online child safety, said the scale of the problem in the UK is  “mind boggling” with up to 60,000 individuals swapping or downloading child abuse images online. Yet annual arrests have never been above 2,500.  It is estimated 360 million illegal images were seized in the two years to April 2012. In 1995, when the internet was in its infancy, there were just 7,000....

Scott Rubin, Google’s communications director, said: “When we discover child abuse imagery or are made aware of it we respond quickly to remove and report it.”

Jimmy Savile ‘took his Passion Wagon to Scout camp’
PREDATORY paedophile Jimmy Savile is feared to have been allowed unsupervised access to a Boy Scout camp overnight in the motorhome he called his “Passion Wagon”.

By: Mark Branagan Sun, June 2, 2013
Scout leaders are under pressure over allegations that disgraced DJ Savile and his friend Jimmy Corrigan spent the night in a tent just feet from where the youngsters slept. It is alleged the two men visited the campsite, in Doncaster, as part of a fund raising effort by Savile.

Concern about the late Jim’ll Fix It star’s links with the movement have been growing since claims surfaced  that he abused a Scout in his BBC dressing room in 1976.

The new allegations are the latest in a file of evidence into Savile’s sordid past being built up by residents in Whitby, North Yorkshire. The northern seaside town has been visited by Scotland Yard officers working on Operation Yewtree.

The Scouting Association has made it clear that their current safeguarding policy means such access would now never be allowed. It is unlikely today’s rigorous rules would have been in place in the Sixties and Seventies.....  “This was a type of vehicle he is known to have used to commit sexual offences safely and securely without being seen or discovered.”

Scots charity demands crackdown on child sexual abuse images
STV 1 June 2013

A Scottish children's charity has called for a review of how the justice system deals with people convicted of viewing online images of children being sexually abused.
Children 1st is writing to Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill as part of its demand for a consistent approach to the prosecution and sentencing of such offences across the country.

The charity is also calling for police and the courts to use the full range of powers available to them in cases involving sexual abuse images. The demand is part of the charity's ongoing See.Hear.Speak.Act campaign on sexual abuse, and comes in the wake of the recent conviction of Mark Bridger for the murder of five-year-old April Jones in Wales last year.

Bridger had viewed images of children being sexually assaulted on his computer. In a separate case earlier this year, the Old Bailey heard how Stuart Hazell, jailed for murdering 12-year-old Tia Sharp, had searched for images of children being sexually abused on the internet. The cases have prompted UK-wide calls for greater action to tackle the problem....

Stuart Hall: victims say they were abused at BBC
Steven Swinford – 03 May 2013

Two of his victims have come forward to say they were sexually abused by Hall in the 1960s and 1970s after he was hired for their school prizegivings.

Hall invited both girls to the BBC's Manchester headquarters after promising that he would help them with their careers. One victim said Hall plied her with "plenty of champagne" before raping her in his dressing room.

Another said Hall sexually assaulted her in his car after inviting her to a "mocked up" studio session at the corporation's Manchester studios.

Both said Hall was helped by his friends, amid growing concerns that other staff at BBC may have turned a blind eye to the abuse.

Angie Bray, a Conservative member of the culture, media and sport select committee, said: "They have to look at this all over again. Depressingly, we see a pattern developing. Jimmy Savile is not just a one-off."

The investigation into Hall's activities began after one of his victims wrote an anonymous letter to a columnist at The Independent newspaper.

She said that she had been groomed and sexually abused by Hall after meeting him at her school prize-giving in the 1970s, when he was a presenter on Look North, a local BBC news programme.

Hall told her headmaster he was "impressed" and thought she could have a "future in television journalism", inviting her back to the BBC's studios.

She said:"I was young for my years and easy meat for a man like him," the woman wrote. To have a man of my father's age take a benevolent interest in me seemed wonderful.

"Sadly the world is too full of girls (and boys) who are looking for love, and find out too late that they have found sex with a predator instead."....

For anyone looking to teach a master class in brainwashing techniques, “The Source Family” might be an excellent place to start. Theory Advanced by the Study: False childhood memories can be implanted into adults by repeatedly stating the false memory as true.

Conclusion: The study’s theory and methodology are not reliable under either Frye or Daubert standards.

....For example, any attempt to use the Lost in the Mall study to prove or disprove that a person is telling the truth about sexual abuse should be unsuccessful simply because memories about getting lost in a mall have nothing to do with memories of being sexually or physically violated.   Put another way, the capacity to make a person falsely believe they were once lost in a mall does not “fit” and bears no relevance in a dispute over whether a person can be made to falsely believe they were sexually abused as a child.

U.S.: Women forced into sex 25 times a day

Associated Press Wed May 1, 2013 12:57 PM

NEW YORK — The young Mexican women were driven to rural New Jersey, where their handlers used threats to make them have sex with 25 farmworkers a day. Or they were confined to dingy brothels in the New York City area that advertised their services with “chica cards,” business cards passed out on street corners to attract customers. They were paid very little, or nothing at all.

U.S. authorities detailed their ordeal in a criminal complaint charging 13 people with smuggling dozens into the United States and forcing them into prostitution. Some of the defendants were to appear Wednesday in federal court in Manhattan to face multiple counts including sex trafficking and interstate transportation for prostitution.

The ring “lured their unsuspecting victims to the United States and then consigned them to a living hell,” U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement.

The investigation was among several aimed at “blockading the repugnant sex trafficking corridor” used to exploit victims from Tenancingo, Mexico, said James Hayes, head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in New York....

Police force under fire over Savile sex probe mistakes, Savile accusations ‘censored’

Police force under fire over Savile sex probe mistakes  Tuesday 12 March 2013
WEST Yorkshire Police held virtually no information about Jimmy Savile’s sex abuse before he died despite more than 40 of his victims coming from the county, a damning report reveals today.

Inspectors from a police watchdog criticised mistakes by forces nationwide in sharing information about the disgraced presenter as they expressed “serious concerns” that so many victims felt unable to come forward.

Only five allegations and two pieces of intelligence were recorded by police in the entire country though one dated back as early as 1964, Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary revealed. And although Savile lived in West Yorkshire for much of his life and had dozens of local victims, the only significant recorded information about his criminal activities were held by other forces.

Officers in West Yorkshire held no “intelligence reports” about Savile which would have prompted further investigation and only one minor “information report”. This was despite newspaper reports being freely available online revealing that Savile was interviewed by West Yorkshire Police in 1958 and that he had been due to appear in court over sexual abuse allegations. The report said mistakes by officers in Surrey, London and Sussex meant no one force was able to piece together the full extent of the Leeds-born DJ’s sexual abuse. And it claimed inconsistencies in the way they shared information meant there was a “distinct possibility” officers could fail to prevent another similar scandal from happening again....

Savile accusations ‘censored’
Friday 22 February 2013

Detailed accusations about Jimmy Savile’s sex crimes were censored after viewers tried to post them on a BBC tribute web page.

The comments, which included one person who wrote “One of my best friends in 1972 was molested by this creep Savile. He was never the same again. Killed himself in 1985. How’s About That Then?”, were stopped from being published by a team of moderators employed by the corporation.

The details were included in thousands of pages of evidence gathered during an inquiry by former journalist Nick Pollard into Newsnight’s decision to drop its Savile investigation which were published today by the BBC.

A transcript of an interview between Mr Pollard and former director general George Entwistle refers to examples of the comments, including one person who wrote: “He was a paedophile. You may not like the truth but he was. It will all tumble out now.”

Another wrote: “Sorry to rain on the parade of all the well-wishers, but he was infamous in Scarborough. I would not have been letting my son sit on his knee.”....

BBC uses licence fee cash to 'gag its staff', Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Satanic Thrill Kill

BBC uses licence fee cash to 'gag its staff': Broadcaster accused of 'corporate bullying' in bid to buy the silence of alleged sexual harassment victims

Up to 20 former staff made to sign contracts to stop them whistleblowing
They thought they could not give evidence to inquiry because of clauses
BBC insists no one is barred from giving evidence, despite agreements
Countryfile's Miriam O'Reilly said use of gagging clauses  is 'insidious'

By Sam Greenhill and Paul Revoir

2 March 2013
The BBC was accused of 'corporate bullying' last night after spending licence-payers' cash to buy the silence of up to 20 alleged harassment victims.

The gagging orders threaten to make a mockery of an inquiry set up in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal to uncover the depths of sexual harassment at the corporation.

Up to 20 former staff – all of whom claim to have been victims of bullying or sexual harassment – believed they had effectively been banned from giving evidence to the internal review.

Each had been paid off and made to sign contracts to stop them turning whistleblower.

The absurd situation could mean licence-payers funding an expensive inquiry on the one hand, only for potential witnesses to think they cannot give evidence.

The inquiry, overseen by human rights lawyer Dinah Rose QC, is expected to report next month.

In another twist, a lawyer last night claimed a further 'two dozen' BBC women – some of them famous names – have come forward in the past week complaining of sexual discrimination, bullying or harassment.

Ann Olivarius, said there was 'a culture full of male bias at the BBC'. Following a talk she gave to 150 women in the arts, two dozen 'talked about sexual discrimination and about bullying and inappropriate sexual advances'....

The BBC insists no one has been barred from giving evidence, despite any previous agreements which may have been signed....

Man Sentenced to Life in Prison for Satanic Thrill Kill March 4, 2013
Hayward, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- A Wisconsin man will spend the rest of his life in prison for his part in a brutal murder in 2009.

30-year-old Christopher Roalson was shown no mercy for what authorities dubbed a "thrill kill" with satanic overtones.  A jury found Roalson guilty of stabbing 93-year-old Irena Roszak to death over three year ago in Raddison, Wisconsin.  Just minutes to his sentencing on Monday, he still denies taking part in the murder, blaming Austin Davis for the murder. "I'm very sorry about what happened to Ms. Roszak and I know that she didn't deserve that but that was not the intent that night. Our intent was only to go out and commit a burglary," said Roalson at his sentencing hearing. Burnett County Judge Kenneth Kutz didn't buy Roalson's plead for leniency.

Now Gathering in Rome, a Conclave of Fallible Cardinals

By LAURIE GOODSTEIN February 26, 2013

The sudden resignation of the most senior Roman Catholic cardinal in Britain, who stepped aside on Monday in the face of accusations that he made unwanted sexual advances toward priests years ago, showed that the taint of scandal could force a cardinal from participating in the selection of a new pope.

His exit came as at least a dozen other cardinals tarnished with accusations that they had failed to remove priests accused of sexually abusing minors were among those gathering in Rome to prepare for the conclave to select a successor to Pope Benedict XVI. There was no sign that the church’s promise to confront the sexual abuse scandal had led to direct pressure on those cardinals to exempt themselves from the conclave....

Ending the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children in California
By James R. Marsh on February 28, 2013

Today the National Center for Youth Law released a new report, Ending Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children: A Call for Multi-System Collaboration in California.
CA Report Cover Page

Report author Kate Walker, an Equal Justice Works Fellow and Attorney at the Center, commented that "Every day, the unthinkable happens: thousands of America's children are coerced into performing sex for hire. Exploitation can start as young as age ten. Some exploited children are brutally beaten and raped. Others are isolated, drugged, and starved until they become "willing" participants. Yet, these children are regularly arrested and held in juvenile detention facilities even though they are victims of crime."

Worldwide, human trafficking is a $32 billion industry, involving 100,000 children in the U.S. The FBI has determined that three of the nation's thirteen High Intensity Child Prostitution areas are located in California.

Studies estimate that between 50 and 80 percent of commercially sexually exploited children (CSEC) are or were formally involved with the child welfare system....

Incoming BBC Boss Discusses Jimmy Savile Scandal, Crisis
3/1/2013 by Stuart Kemp
LONDON – Incoming BBC director-general Tony Hall has said a reckless approach to creative risk-taking led the BBC into crisis amid the fallout of the Jimmy Savile sex abuse scandal last year in an interview with The Guardian newspaper....

And Hall identified a rift between BBC executives and journalists as one of the underlying reasons for the failure to get the Newsnight investigation into Savile to air in December 2011.

The fallout from the Savile sexual abuse scandal rocked the broadcaster to the core and contributed in a large part to the resignation of the previous director general George Entwistle.

BBC cleared of coverup in Savile case, But a report faults the British broadcaster's decision to drop a news investigation

BBC cleared of coverup in Jimmy Savile case
But a report faults the British broadcaster's decision to drop a news investigation of pedophilia allegations against the late TV host, as well as ensuing ineptitude.
December 19, 2012 By Henry Chu, Los Angeles Times

LONDON — The BBC did not deliberately cover up sex abuse allegations against one of its most famous hosts in order to go ahead with tribute shows to him after his death, but its decision to drop a news investigation into the accusations was "seriously flawed," a highly anticipated report released Wednesday says....

Pollard, a prominent former television news executive, was commissioned by the BBC to conduct an independent inquiry into why the corporation chose to kill an investigation of Savile by its program "Newsnight" that was on track to be aired in late 2011.

Savile, an eccentric figure who wore tracksuits and long hair, had died a few months earlier after many years as a children's television host at the BBC. Other divisions of the broadcasting corporation were planning lavish holiday tributes to him.

Those tributes went ahead, and the "Newsnight" program was shelved. But this year, a rival network broadcast its own investigation of Savile, who is now suspected by police of having been a predatory pedophile responsible for molesting or raping dozens of young girls, some of them on BBC premises.

Pollard's report, based on interviews and a review of more than 10,000 emails and other documents, concludes that there had not been any undue pressure from senior management to pull the "Newsnight" investigation in order to protect the BBC's reputation or to continue with the tribute shows. "Newsnight" editor Peter Rippon made an honest but wrong assessment that the evidence in the investigation was not strong enough, the report says.

"The 'Newsnight' investigators got the story right," Pollard said. "The decision by their editor to drop the investigation was clearly flawed and the way it was taken was wrong, but I believe it was done in good faith. It was not done to protect the Savile tribute programs."

However, once the accusations surfaced on rival network ITV and questions began to be raised about the aborted "Newsnight" program, the BBC responded with breathtaking incompetence, the report says in a particularly damning finding.

The Jimmy Savile child abuse scandal breaks
28 September: the scandal of Jimmy Savile's child abuse allegations goes public – and the BBC investigates itself
    Shelley Jofre, Panorama reporter
The Observer, Saturday 22 December 2012

When the story broke that Exposure was going to be doing a story on Jimmy Savile, and that Newsnight had somehow suppressed it, I suggested to my editor, Tom Giles, that we should do something about it. Like any journalist I just wanted to know what on earth had gone on.

The story was moving so quickly we made the film in a week – it normally takes a month. We were unravelling the whole thing on the hoof and managed to gather a huge amount of information about what happened with Savile at the BBC over four decades. From the testimonies, some of the stories seem jawdropping. Our archive producer did an amazing job of unearthing powerful footage of Savile so we saw how overtly sexual he was, groping and leering at women on the programmes we all watched as children.

The most poignant was the group of cub scouts who appeared on Jim'll Fix It. The archive producer located footage of the boy I interviewed anonymously as a grown man. You could see the joy and happiness on his face as a nine-year-old during what should have been one of the biggest moments of his childhood, then he was molested shortly afterwards in Savile's dressing room. He was so ashamed he didn't tell anyone for 40 years....

Jimmy Savile scandal: George Entwistle to give evidence at Newsnight inquiry

Jimmy Savile scandal: George Entwistle to give evidence at Newsnight inquiry

Ex-director general to appear before Nick Pollard inquiry into handling of programme's aborted investigation of presenter

Dan Sabbagh guardian.co.uk, Thursday 22 November 2012

George Entwistle, the former BBC director general, is expected to give evidence on Monday before Nick Pollard's inquiry into the handling of Newsnight's aborted investigation into sexual abuse by the late Jimmy Savile, in a demanding hearing that will see him grilled on what he knew about it by a silk.

The much criticised executive spent the last days of his short-lived director generalship preparing intensively for his appearance, which is expected to last several hours, and comes as the Pollard inquiry moves into its third week of evidence, having seen most of the senior BBC executives touched by the Savile film that never aired.

It is likely to be an exacting experience for a man who clearly struggled when he had to give evidence before MPs on on the culture media and sport select committee last month, and who performed poorly when interviewed by John Humphrys on the Today programme on the morning of what turned out to be the day he resigned....

However, he is likely to come under greater pressure over his handling of the Newsnight affair in the couple of months after the Savile allegations were first aired by ITV, and in particular will be questioned on why he relied for so long on the account of events provided by Newsnight's editor Peter Rippon, an account that had to be corrected at least three times. For instance, Rippon wrongly said that the police were aware of all Newsnight's unbroadcast material, when in fact one of the abuse victims filmed by the programme had never gone to the police....

Ex-BBC producer arrested over Jimmy Savile abuse claims, BBC's Entwistle resigns

Ex-BBC producer arrested over Jimmy Savile abuse claims

11 November 2012

A former BBC producer has been arrested in connection with the inquiry into abuse claims made against Jimmy Savile.

Wilfred De'Ath, who is in his 70s, was held in Cambridgeshire at 07:15 GMT.

A Met Police spokesman did not confirm his name but said a man was arrested on suspicion of sexual offences and taken into police custody locally, before being bailed until December.

He added the man was held as part of the Operation Yewtree probe into claims Savile sexually abused young people.

Police believe the former BBC TV presenter and DJ, who died last year aged 84, may have abused as many as 300 people over a 40-year period.

Mr De'Ath once produced a Jimmy Savile radio show. Neighbours at his flat in Cambridge said detectives removed bags from the property.

A number of individuals are being investigated as part of the operation. These include people who allegedly carried out abuse with Savile as well as others who are suspected of abusing independently of Savile....

Developments in Britain's child sex-abuse scandal involving Jimmy Savile, BBC

By Associated Press 11/12/12

LONDON — The BBC's top executive, George Entwistle, resigned Saturday night amid a flood of controversy over the broadcaster's handling of child sex-abuse cases.

His resignation caps a difficult month for the broadcaster, which first came under fire for not airing allegations of child sex abuse committed by one of its star hosts, the late Jimmy Savile. Just weeks later, the BBC's prestigious investigative program, "Newsnight," wrongly implicated a British politician in a child sex-abuse scandal.

It was the same program that had earlier shelved a report into Savile....
