Backpage.com founder and CEO face new charges
Associated Press July 27, 2018

PHOENIX — A new indictment in Arizona against operators of Backpage.com alleges the classified ad site gave free ads to prostitutes and cultivated arrangements with others who worked in the sex trade to get them to post ads with the company.

The indictment filed Wednesday repeats allegations in an initial round of charges and adds six new money laundering charges against founder Mike Lacey and 50 charges of facilitating prostitution against chief financial officer John Brunst.
A total of seven people were charged in an indictment in late March alleging the site ignored warnings to stop running prostitution ads, sometimes involving children, after the site brought in $500 million of prostitution-related revenue since its inception in 2004.

The new indictment said Backpage.com employees would identify prostitutes through Google searches then call and offer them a free ad. It says the company used the strategy in Nashville and other cities and planned to expand such efforts in Los Angeles and New York.
The document also said the classified site had a business arrangement in which it would place ads on another site that lets customers post reviews of their experiences with prostitutes.

Backpage.com is a Dutch-owned limited liability corporation. Its principal place of business is in Dallas and federal officials say it keeps its bank accounts and servers in Arizona.
Prosecutors say Backpage.com was warned by an internet safety firm in April 2011 about the phrase “New In Town.” a code term used by pimps who shuttle children to locations where they don’t know anyone and can’t get help.

“Nevertheless, Backpage continued for the next seven years to permit ads using the phrase ‘New In Town’ to be published on its website,” the indictment said.

'Satanic ritual' killing: Siblings 'sacrifice elderly mum to devil' and 'bathe in her blood' after gruesome murder
WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT: One of Teodora Quispe Ccayllahua's children allegedly claimed the "master of darkness" ordered her to kill the 75-year-old
By Matt Roper 18 JUL 2018

Three siblings murdered their elderly mother after gouging out her eyes and cutting out her intestines in a horrific satanic ritual, police claim.
The mutilated body of Teodora Quispe Ccayllahua, 75, was found by police after one of her children allegedly claimed the "master of darkness" ordered the killing.

The trip is accused of dumping the pensioner's remains in a pond and bathing in her blood.
The victim's youngest child allegedly told detectives that she was "chosen" to carry out the sacrifice during a strange dream and convinced her two siblings to murder their mother....
Her three children, Aurelia Quispe, 38, Percy Quispe, 41 and Marcelina Suane, 46, were later caught by National Police officers and have allegedly confessed to the murder.

According to police, the siblings conspired together to kill their mother on Saturday night in a grotesque healing ritual in which a loved one needed to be sacrificed to the devil....
Aurelia, described by police as the ringleader, allegedly said at the moment she was arrested: “The master of darkness ordered me, the king of demons is already with us, we are more and every day we will become bigger.”...

Locals claimed that satanic sects operating in remote areas of the Santa Cruz province are known to practise such gruesome rituals, promising cures, success and financial gain....

Larry Nassar Set To Appeal Sexual Abuse Case Sentence
By Scooby Axson July 25, 2018
Attorneys for convicted sex abuser Larry Nassar filed two motions challenging the sentence he received earlier this year for sexual assault, according to multiple media reports.
A notice of hearings is scheduled for August 22, according to the report.

Nassar, a former Michigan State and USA gymnastics doctor, was sentenced up to 175 years on Michigan state charges of sexual assault, to go along with a sentence of 40 to 125 years in prison on three counts of sexual assault. He also recieved a 60–year sentence on federal child-pornography charges.

Nassar’s state appellate defense attorneys filed the motions in Ingham County Court in Michigan and want Nassar's sentence thrown out so he can be re-sentenced.

His attorneys also want Judge Rosemarie Aquilina to be removed from the case, calling her an "admittedly not an unbiased and impartial judge."....

More than 300 women have said they were sexually assaulted by Nassar, including 156 women and girls who give victim-impact statements during the sentencing phase of his trial in Ingham County.

Michigan State has agreed to pay out $500 million in settlements Nassar abuse victims and multiple victims have sued Nassar, alleging that USA Gymnastics failed to act on the abuse claims and failed to notify the U.S. Olympic Committee, Michigan State University, and law enforcement....

Seagram’s Liquor Heiress Charged in Nxivm Sex-Trafficking Case
By Sean Piccoli July 24, 2018
Clare Bronfman, an heiress to the Seagram’s liquor fortune, pleaded not guilty on Tuesday in federal court in Brooklyn after her arrest on conspiracy and racketeering charges in connection with her role at Nxivm, a self-help group that prosecutors call a pyramid scheme and former members say is a cult.

Ms. Bronfman was one of four people arrested in New York State on Tuesday after the unsealing of an updated seven-count indictment against Keith Raniere, leader of the now defunct-group, and five others in his “inner circle,” federal prosecutors said in the indictment.
Mr. Raniere, 57, was arrested earlier this year in Mexico and brought to New York to face federal sex-trafficking charges. Prosecutors said he and one of his followers, Allison Mack, 35, an actress known for her work in “Smallville,” coerced female members to have unwanted sex with him and branded them with a symbol containing his initials. Mr. Raniere is being held without bail in Brooklyn to await trial....

Past defenders — including Ms. Bronfman, in an internet post last year — called the group a dynamic self-improvement and fellowship organization. But prosecutors maintain it was a moneymaking criminal enterprise that relied on theft, intimidation and coercion to stay afloat, even as it forced some recruits into sexual slavery.
The updated indictment charges the six defendants with money laundering, extortion, obstruction of justice, forced labor, sex trafficking, identity theft and harboring of undocumented immigrants.....

Facebook moderator trained not to delete certain racist memes and images of child abuse, Lasting health impact follows child abuse

A reporter went undercover as a Facebook moderator and was trained not to delete certain racist memes and images of child abuse - Isobel Asher Hamilton and Jake Kanter - July 17, 2018

A reporter for the British broadcaster Channel 4 went undercover as a Facebook moderator at CPL Resources, a Dublin-based content-moderation contractor.

The person found that Facebook was failing to delete shocking images of graphic violence, child abuse, and racism, including a little boy being beaten by an adult man.

The documentary "Inside Facebook: Secrets of the Social Network" exposes wild inconsistencies between the way moderators were being trained and Facebook's standards.
Facebook said it had made "mistakes" but denied accusations that it sought to profit from extreme content.
A journalist from the British broadcaster Channel 4 went undercover as a Facebook moderator and found a stream of toxic content that was intentionally left on the site.

The reporter posed as an employee of CPL Resources — a Dublin-based content-moderation contractor that has worked with Facebook since 2010 — for the documentary "Inside Facebook: Secrets of the Social Network."

The journalist undertook CPL Resources' training, in which new staff members are brought up to speed with Facebook's community standards and set to work reviewing content including images of graphic violence, child abuse, and hate speech.

Moderators were given three options when reviewing material: ignore, delete, or mark as disturbing. Content marked as disturbing remains on Facebook but has restrictions on who is able to view it.
The reporter found instances in which images of child abuse, racism, and violence were allowed to remain on Facebook. In some cases, the findings also exposed wild inconsistencies between the way moderators were being trained and Facebook's standards.

(NBC News) A new study of 60,000 women over nearly 30 years suggests those who were forced to endure the horrors of physical or sexual abuse as a child may be at higher risk for developing the debilitating pelvic disease endometriosis.
"Endometriosis is a disease where the tissue that's usually growing in the uterus in fact implants and grows in other places in the body," explains Stacy Missmer from Michigan State University.

The disease is extremely painful and can cause infertility, and researchers found a history of abuse can increase the risk for endometriosis by up to 79 percent.
Experts think early life trauma may create a heightened state of stress in the body, translating into chronic inflammation.

Church of England downplayed extent of child abuse allegations to protect its reputation, report finds
Olivia Rudgard, Religious Affairs Correspondent

The Church of England disregarded dozens of allegations in its inquiry into child sexual abuse and then downplayed the issue to protect its reputation, a critical report has found.

A report by former Barnardo's chief executive Sir Roger Singleton found that close to 100 cases were whittled down to just a handful for a review released in 2010.

Inconsistent and overly specific criteria reduced the number of cases they reported for the Past Cases Review, leading it to conclude after examining 40,000 files that just 13 cases of alleged child sexual abuse merited formal action.

Sir Roger, who was commissioned to complete an inquiry into the review, said he believed the Church "downplayed" the issue in public statements to avoid reputational damage.

However, he also said he found "no evidence whatsoever of a deliberate attempt to mislead" or that anyone broke the law.

"In the public statement that it issued reporting on the review, [the Church] rather failed to give a comprehensive picture of the concerns that existed," he said.

"It narrowed down the definitions of who had actually been responsible for abuse by limiting it to just new cases and cases where the Church took formal action. This had the impact of reducing the numbers from probably nearer 100 to just two which appeared in the public statements."

Paedophile cults, parenting and multiple personalities: A mother who’s experienced it all
By Hattie Gladwell
Friday 22 Jun 2018

Karen*, a mother-of-three in her sixties, lives with dissociative identity disorder (DID), which used to be known as ‘multiple personality disorder’.

It was triggered during her childhood by enduring extreme ritual abuse, inflicted on her by a group of paedophiles. Starting even before she could speak, she underwent emotional, physical and sexual abuse of the most horrific kinds imaginable.

This ‘cult’ Karen describes as a paedophile ring caused Karen to start to disassociate to try and cope with the horrendous pain and trauma inflicted on her as a child.
It started when she was a one-year-old and carried on until she was 16. She now says that she has ‘many parts’.

When the abuse finally stopped after her childhood, the past was ‘barricaded safely away for over 20 years’ because of her ‘alters’ or ‘parts’, the terms used for alternate identities.

DID’s symptoms mean you experience severe changes in your identity, with your psyche creating various personalities to help you cope with traumatic events.

The identity states may come across as different ages and genders, and you may feel you have one ‘main’ part of your identity that feels most like ‘you’ – which some people call the host identity.

A person living with DID may not have control over the different parts when an identity takes over and they may even suffer from amnesia which means you don’t remember what happens when another part of your identity is in control....
The emotional, sexual and physical abuse took many forms, from emotional manipulation and controlling behaviour to rape and beatings.

Karen was abused by a pseudo-cult claiming to be of Christian religion as justification. Heartbreakingly, she also suffered abuse outside of the cult, from people within her family....

Havant sexual abuse survivor calls for more support: ‘There is life after abuse
Tamara Siddiqui Wednesday 27 June 2018

A WOMAN who endured almost 20 years of emotional, sexual and physical abuse is raising awareness about the lack of help available for survivors of such terrible ordeals.

Pauline Sharp, 55, was abused by her parents at her childhood home in Stubbington, and now lives with a number of health issues including chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)....

Pauline, who lives in Havant, said: ‘I’m a survivor of ritual abuse which started at the age of three and carried on until I was about 22. I got told I was chosen, there to serve, and I should be thankful.

‘The impact of child sexual abuse on me and all survivors is life-long.

‘Over the years I have abused my own body, because I was violated, raped, and indoctrinated for so long, told I was evil and worth nothing, so I believed it.
‘I would inflict pain on myself, self-harm and overeat, just so I could mask the pain inflicted on me. As well as chronic PTSD I have short-term memory loss caused by the trauma, anxiety, disassociation, flashbacks and nightmares.’....

After also being taken elsewhere so others could inflict abuse on her, Pauline escaped her parents’ control aged 22 for a job as a nanny in Canada.

She described using her once 24-stone weight as a disguise that kept her safe.
Pauline, who was hospitalised twice in 2007, added: ‘I only got the right help after my second breakdown and it took two years, but I’m lucky I got it because some places have it, some don’t.

‘Survivors of abuse have suffered so much as children and as adults their needs deserve to be met with specialist long-term trauma-based help.
‘Only if a survivor can access the right support can they even begin to recover.
‘I am silent no more and I want to raise awareness, much-needed funds, and show other survivors there is love, laughter and life after abuse....

Judge refuses to dismiss lawsuit accusing FLDS of sexually abusing young girls under guise of religion By Michael Rinker July 3, 2018

ST. GEORGE — A Utah judge last week denied a defendant’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit alleging ritualistic sex abuse of young girls by former leaders of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints....

The lawsuit accuses high-ranking FLDS leaders of carrying out a “calculated plan” of ritualistic sex abuse involving girls as young as 8 years old.

In addition to the UEP Trust, other defendants include former FLDS President Warren Jeffs, his brothers Lyle Jeffs and Seth Jeffs, former FLDS leader Wendell Nielsen and the FLDS church.

In 2005, a Utah judge appointed a special fiduciary to take over the UEP Trust in response to accusations that Warren Jeffs and other FLDS leaders mismanaged it.

The responsibility of the special fiduciary has since been reduced, and the trust is now largely run by a court-appointed board of trustees

Since the 2005 intervention, communal property once controlled by the church in Colorado City, Arizona, and Hildale has been subdivided and farms and other businesses have been claimed by the trust as taxes went unpaid. It has been overseeing distribution of the property.

As part of their FLDS beliefs, sex between underage girls and priesthood leaders took place, the lawsuit alleges. After President Rulon T. Jeffs suffered a stroke in August 1998, much of his power and authority was delegated to his son Warren Jeffs, who began a new practice involving ritualistic sexual intercourse with young girls in the FLDS temple and other FLDS properties.

“Sex with girls, ages eight to 14 years old, was initiated by Warren Jeffs,” the lawsuit alleges, “along with leadership of UEP Trust and the FLDS Church, including the Twelve Apostles of the Church engaging in and witnessing the sexual relations between Warren S. Jeffs, Lyle Jeffs, Seth Jeffs and Wendell LeRoy Nielsen and other John Does viewing, watching, taping, participating in and documenting these sexual encounters with underage girls.”....

“Warren S. Jeffs told (R.H.) that if she told anyone of these encounters, God would destroy her and her family immediately,” the lawsuit states. He also reportedly said that if she cried during the ritual, “God would punish her.”
The rituals reportedly occurred five to six times a week until R.H. turned 12. When she was 14 years old, the lawsuit alleges, she was required to witness and document other girls’ ritualistic abuse with church leaders.....

Dissociative Identity Disorder: What it's like to live with multiple personalities
By Tracey Shelton 30 Jun 2018

Ms Tulloch has dissociative identity disorder (DID), also known as multiple personality disorder. She has more than 100 "parts", each with their own ages, abilities, likes and characteristics.

Psychological studies and accounts of multiplicity have been around for centuries, and DID has been included in the official psychiatry manual since 1980. But it still remains controversial.

In almost every studied case, the cause can be traced back to extreme and ongoing trauma during childhood. For Ms Tulloch, it was repeated sexual abuse perpetrated by neighbours that began when she was three years old.

Psychiatrist Dr Warwick Middleton, one of Australia's leading experts in dissociative disorders, describes it as "compartmentalisation" or a complex coping system that develops in a young mind unable to deal with the abuse inflicted on them by those they depend on for survival.

In her definitive book Trauma and Recovery, Judith Herman said the only weapon of survival for a child trapped in an abusive environment are "psychological defences" and this forces the development of "extraordinary capacities, both creative and destructive".

"Repeated trauma in adult life erodes the structure of the personality already formed," she writes, "but repeated trauma in childhood forms and deforms the personality."....

On the outside, her family were devout Baptist Christians, but behind the scenes her memories include ritual abuse by groups of adults, and horrific sexual "punishments" at home, mostly at the hands of her grandfather, for crimes as small as "touching my grandmother's special china plates".

The abuse resulted in numerous medical issues that never seemed to raise an eyebrow at the doctor's clinic.
Di — who went on to become a nurse, a mother and now a grandmother — is telling her story in the hopes of raising awareness not to ignore the signs that a child may be experiencing abuse at home, even in families that appear to be respected members of the community.....

Archbishop Philip Wilson sentenced for concealing child sex abuse, Child Abuse Conference

Archbishop Philip Wilson sentenced for concealing child sex abuse
Wilson handed 12 months’ imprisonment but may be allowed to serve time in home detention
Australian Associated Press
Mon 2 Jul 2018

The most senior Catholic official in the world to be convicted of concealing child sex abuse is likely to be spared time in prison.
Adelaide’s Archbishop Philip Wilson was found guilty in May of failing to report to police the abuse of two altar boys by a paedophile priest in the 1970s.

The magistrate Robert Stone in Newcastle local court on Tuesday sentenced the 67-year-old to 12 months’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of six months. He ordered that Wilson be assessed for home detention.....

Another victim of Fletcher’s, Daniel Feenan, has said if Wilson had gone to police in 1976 the paedophile priest “would never have got to me”.

Fletcher was found guilty in 2004 of nine counts of child sexual abuse and died in jail of a stroke in 2016.....
