Suspect in Pittsfield triple murder sentenced to life in prison

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -
A Pittsfield man convicted last week of killing three Berkshire County men was sentenced Monday afternoon in Hampden County Superior Court.
A judge ordered Caius Veiovis serve consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole on the murder convictions, as well as concurrent eight to 10 year sentences on other charges.
Veiovis was convicted Friday of the August 2011 slayings of David Glasser, Edward Frampton, and Robert Chadwell following a two-week trial and more than 36 hours of jury deliberations.
He was the third and final person convicted for the slayings....

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts — A Massachusetts man with facial tattoos, forehead implants that resemble horns and other body modifications told jurors he would see them “all in hell” after he was convicted last week of murdering three men in 2011.
Caius Veiovis, 34, of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, was found guilty on Friday of three counts each of murder, intimidation of a witness and kidnapping, Berkshire District Attorney David Capeless said in a statement. Veiovis had previously been convicted under another name in Maine for assaulting an Augusta woman.
Veiovis was the last of three co-defendants convicted in the triple homicide....
Authorities say Veiovis, Hall and Chalue kidnapped and killed three Pittsfield men: David Glasser, 44; Edward Frampton, 58, and Robert Chadwell, 47. The three were last seen on Aug. 28, 2011, at an apartment shared by Glasser and Frampton.
The shot and dismembered bodies of the three men were uncovered by local and federal detectives 10 days later in Becket, Massachusetts....
Veiovis has a criminal history in Maine that includes felony convictions from 2000 for his role in a blood-letting ritual that included slicing the back of a 16-year-old girl and then licking the blood with another girl.
He was age 19, living in Augusta and known as Roy Gutfinski Jr. at the time. He was dating Deanne Jones, a 16-year-old who agreed to be treated as an adult when she pleaded guilty in November 1999 to elevated aggravated assault in the blood-drinking ritual.
Jones, who used a razor to cut the 7-inch gash across the other girl’s back on Aug. 21, 1999, was sentenced to a year in jail and six years of probation.
Gutfinski was charged with elevated aggravated assault, aggravated assault and reckless conduct for the girl’s attack, which required 32 stitches.
At Gutfinski’s waived-jury trial in 2000, prosecutor Alan Kelley portrayed Gutfinski as “a Satanic worshipper” who told police “he was a vampire and drank blood, his own as well as other persons.”
Gutfinski and Jones met the cutting victim in downtown Augusta two days before the incident occurred. Neither girl wanted Gutfinski prosecuted, Kelley said.
He was convicted in March 2000 and later sentenced to 10 years in prison with all but three years suspended, as well as four years of probation.
Gutfinski, who ended up serving more than seven years behind bars after various probation violations, changed his legal name to Caius Domitius Veiovis in July 2008 while at Maine State Prison.
He unsuccessfully applied in 2003 to have his name changed to “Diszade Trash Horror.” Veiovis was released from Maine’s probation system in July 2010.
In the years since, Veiovis has had hornlike objects implanted in his forehead, added facial tattoos, including the number “666,” sharpened his teeth and had his tongue split, according to the Berkshire Eagle....

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A man who has bumps resembling horns implanted in his forehead was found guilty of murder and other charges Friday for his role in the kidnapping and slaying of three Massachusetts men in 2011.
“I’ll see you all in hell,” Caius Veiovis, 34, of Pittsfield, yelled at the jury that convicted him after deliberating over six days. Veiovis also was convicted Friday of kidnapping and intimidation of a witness.
The dismembered bodies of David Glasser, 44; Edward Frampton, 58; and Robert Chadwell, 47, of Pittsfield were found buried in nearby Becket 10 days after they disappeared in August 2011. The killings shocked Pittsfield, a town of about 41,000 in northwestern Massachusetts. The trials were moved to Springfield.
Two co-defendants in the case were convicted of the same charges earlier this year. They are serving life without parole, the mandatory term Veiovis faces at his sentencing Monday.
Prosecutors said Veiovis helped Adam Lee Hall, 37, of Peru, and David Chalue, 47, of North Adams, kidnap and shoot the victims weeks before Glasser was to testify against Hall, a Hells Angels member, in an assault case. The others were killed to eliminate witnesses, prosecutors said. Defense attorneys argued there was shaky evidence....

....Jury selection is set to begin Wednesday in Hampden Superior Court in the trial of 34-year-old Caius Veiovis, whose mug shot went viral after his arrest in September 2011 due to his horn implants and facial tattoos.
He is accused of participating in the kidnapping, torture, killing and dismemberment of three men along with 37-year-old Adam Lee "Leo" Hall -- who was then a ranking member of the local Hells Angels motorcycle club -- and David Chalue, a 47-year-old member of the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang.
Hall and Chalue are both serving multiple life sentences in prison after being found guilty of the crimes. Veiovis has pleaded not guilty to three counts each of witness intimidation, kidnapping and murder.
....According to the testimony at Hall and Chalue's trials, Hall and the other two men forced the three victims out of the residence at gunpoint before taking them to the woods. There, as the rain poured down, the victims begged for their lives while they were "tortured beyond torture" and then shot and stabbed to death.
Where the victims were actually killed remains a mystery, but investigators continue to believe Pittsfield State Forest somehow played a role. The murder weapons were never recovered.
The victims' remains were later found in plastic bags buried in a ditch on rural private property in Becket.
....Veiovis, until 2008 when he legally changed his name while serving time in a Maine prison, was known as Roy C. Gutfinski Jr.
In 1999, he was arrested by police in Augusta, Maine, after he and his teenage girlfriend allegedly slashed a 16-year-old's back with a razor and drank the girl's blood while they kissed one another, according to a Boston Globe report. Later, the two girls would claim he wasn't a participant in that ritual, but a judge found him to be a "principal actor" in it.
He was found guilty of elevated aggravated assault, aggravated assault and reckless conduct and served more than seven years in prison.
At the time Veiovis allegedly told police he was a Satanist and vampire who drank human blood.
He was also the lead singer for a Black Metal band "Deadhole" and went by the name "Trash."
In 2006, Veiovis was charged with kidnapping for allegedly holding two employees of the Foxy Lady, a New Bedford strip club, against their will. The women called police from a motel bathroom after Veiovis and another man shed their clothing, started snorting cocaine and refused to let the women leave, according to a Kennebec Journal article from 2007.
The kidnapping charges were later dismissed, but Veiovis was convicted of marijuana possession, triggering probation violation charges in Maine and leading to another 31 2 year prison stint on the violation....

A woman who disappeared as a teenager a decade ago was reunited with her family after she went to police and told them her mother's ex-boyfriend drugged and kidnapped her in 2004, forced her to marry him and fathered her child.
Isidro Garcia, 41, of Bell Gardens, was arrested on suspicion of kidnapping for rape, lewd acts with a minor and false imprisonment, the Santa Ana Police Department police said.
Police described a decade during which the victim — abused mentally, physically and sexually by her captor — was moved at least four times and given multiple fake identities to hide her from family and authorities.
Garcia allegedly told her that her family had stopped trying to find her, and that if she tried to contact them they would be deported.
"Even with the opportunity to escape, after years of physical and mental abuse, the victim saw no way out of her situation and lived a life with Garcia under sustained physical and mental abuse," police said in a written statement.
Neighbors were stunned, describing them as a seemingly happy couple who doted on their young daughter and liked to host parties at their apartment in the working-class community of Bell Gardens, about 20 miles from where she originally disappeared....

The five were among at least 70 men and one woman charged in a five-week operation by the Homeland Security Investigations arm of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Federal officials, who planned to announce the arrests a news conference later Wednesday, call it one of the largest local roundups ever of people who collect images of children having sex — and a stark reminder that they come from all segments of society.
Consuming child porn "is not something that is just done by unemployed drifters who live in their parent's basement," said James Hayes, of ICE's New York office. "If this operation does anything, it puts the lie to the belief that the people who do this are not productive members of society."
Authorities say an alarming number of the defendants had access to young children, though there were no reports of abuse. The Boy Scout leader also coached a youth baseball team. The rabbi home-schooled his children and others. Another person had hidden cameras used to secretly film his children's friends.
One defendant was already on bail following his arrest last year on charges he used the Internet to direct women to record sex acts with young children. Court papers allege he "indicated the last video he had downloaded and viewed depicted a mother sexually abusing her 3- or 4-year-old child."....

A suburban Atlanta elementary school principal has been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly trying to entice a minor female to have sex with him, court records showed on Friday.
John McGill, 56, was arrested in March in a Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) sting operation called Operation Broken Heart. The investigation was aimed at people who meet children online and then travel to meet them for sex, according to the GBI.
McGill was one of 14 people arrested in the operation, the GBI said. He was suspended after the arrest, the school system announced....

A Nebraskan who participated in a gruesome, cult-related murder in 1985 was granted a rare commutation Tuesday that will end his lifetime parole sentence later this year.
The Nebraska Board of Pardons voted unanimously to grant Timothy Haverkamp's request to stop his parole supervision. Haverkamp was released from his prison in 2009 after serving 23 years of a 10-years-to-life sentence....
Haverkamp, 52, was convicted of second-degree murder for his role in the torture and murder of James Thimm, a fellow cult member, at a farm compound near Rulo in southeastern Nebraska. He pleaded guilty and later testified against cult leader Michael Ryan, who remains on death row. Haverkamp also was a key witness against Ryan's son, Dennis....
Michael Ryan ordered Thimm's murder because he had displeased Yahweh, their god. Michael Ryan also was convicted in the beating death of the 5-year-old son of a cult member.
The Ryans and about 20 cult members lived on the farm. The group hated Jews and stored weapons in preparation for a final battle between good and evil....

Johannesburg - Lindon Wagner, found guilty Kirsty Theologo's murder, had a troubled childhood and was rejected by his father, the High Court in Johannesburg sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court heard on Tuesday.
Lydia van Niekerk, for Wagner, said the rejection Wagner suffered during his childhood when he tried to reach out to his father had a serious impact on him.
Wagner started taking drugs from an early age, became an addict, and had a long history of drug abuse....
Cousins Wagner and Robin Harwood were found guilty for their part in the murder of Theologo as well as attempted murder and assault.
Theologo and her friend, who was 14 at the time and may not be named, were assaulted, doused with petrol and set alight in a Satanic “soul-selling” ritual on a hill in Linmeyer, Johannesburg, in October 2011....

Johannesburg - Robin Harwood, found guilty of the murder of Kirsty Theologo, lived almost in a fantasy world, the High Court in Johannesburg sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court heard on Tuesday.
“He was immature, almost lived in an unreal, fantasy world,” his lawyer Gail Sidwell said during arguments in mitigation of his sentencing.
She said Harwood and his friends took drugs and alcohol, and that drugs made him aggressive.
Cousins Lindon Wagner and Harwood are to be sentenced for their part in Theologo's murder, as well as attempted murder, and assault....
Theologo and her friend, who was 14 at the time, were assaulted, doused with petrol and set alight in a Satanic “soul-selling” ritual on a hill in Linmeyer, Johannesburg, in October 2011.
Theologo died in hospital of her injuries a week later. Her friend survived the attack....

A 15-year-old girl has been horrifically murdered in Houston in what appears to be a satanic ritual killing. She was found with an upside-down cross carved into her stomach and religious items placed in a circle around her partially naked body.
Police say Corriann Cervantes was abducted, then raped and bashed in the head with the lid of a toilet tank and an ashtray until she died. She was kidnapped on Wednesday, but her body was not found until Saturday morning.
Police arrested 17-year-old Jose E. Reyes and a 16-year-old classmate of Corriann's, who knew her from the alternative high school they both attended in Clear Lake, Texas.
Reyes confessed to the horrific crime and said he had killed Corriann so that his younger friend could 'sell his soul to the devil,' according to KTRK-TV....
One of the neighbors who found her body said there were religious items placed around her body, according to KTRK....

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Houston police have arrested two suspects for the vicious murder of a 15-year-old Clear Lake girl, whose body was found in an apartment that police say had evidence of "occult activity."
....According to law enforcement sources, Reyes confessed to killing Cervantes with a friend, so his friend "could sell his soul to the devil." Cervantes was found partially clothed and had severe head trauma and numerous brutal injuries. They say she had a broken toilet tank lid around her head and an upside-down cross carved in her stomach.
Police arrested the Reyes after receiving information from the Webster Police Department that he had confessed to a family member. The 16-year-old suspect was arrested at Clear Path Alternative school in the Clear Creek School ISD....

Johannesburg - Lindon Wagner, found guilty Kirsty Theologo's murder, had a troubled childhood and was rejected by his father, the High Court in Johannesburg sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court heard on Tuesday.
Lydia van Niekerk, for Wagner, said the rejection Wagner suffered during his childhood when he tried to reach out to his father had a serious impact on him.
Wagner started taking drugs from an early age, became an addict, and had a long history of drug abuse....
Cousins Wagner and Robin Harwood were found guilty for their part in the murder of Theologo as well as attempted murder and assault.
Theologo and her friend, who was 14 at the time and may not be named, were assaulted, doused with petrol and set alight in a Satanic “soul-selling” ritual on a hill in Linmeyer, Johannesburg, in October 2011....

Johannesburg - Robin Harwood, found guilty of the murder of Kirsty Theologo, lived almost in a fantasy world, the High Court in Johannesburg sitting in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court heard on Tuesday.
“He was immature, almost lived in an unreal, fantasy world,” his lawyer Gail Sidwell said during arguments in mitigation of his sentencing.
She said Harwood and his friends took drugs and alcohol, and that drugs made him aggressive.
Cousins Lindon Wagner and Harwood are to be sentenced for their part in Theologo's murder, as well as attempted murder, and assault....
Theologo and her friend, who was 14 at the time, were assaulted, doused with petrol and set alight in a Satanic “soul-selling” ritual on a hill in Linmeyer, Johannesburg, in October 2011.
Theologo died in hospital of her injuries a week later. Her friend survived the attack....

AUGUSTA -- A prosecutor recommended in 1999 that 20-year-old Roy Gutfinski Jr. be kept behind bars for as long as possible.
Deputy District Attorney Alan Kelley baldly stated Gutfinski, on trial in a bizarre assault case, would continue to be a problem -- both for himself and for society.
"Quite simply, the only guarantee of safety is adult incarceration," Kelley wrote as a judge was poised to sentence Gutfinski in a ritual blood-letting case that left a 16-year-old girl scarred for life.
Kelley's words were prophetic.
Gutfinski was convicted of elevated aggravated assault and served 7 1/2 years of the 10-year sentence -- one of his various periods in Maine and Massachusetts jails.
This week, now living under the name of Caius Domitius Veiovis after a legal name change in 2008, he pleaded not guilty in a Massachusetts court to three counts each of murder, kidnapping and intimidation of witnesses. The former Augusta man now faces the possibility of three life sentences without parole.
Veiovis, 31, and two others are accused of killing three men on or about Aug. 28 in Pittsfield, Mass., allegedly to prevent one of them from testifying.
A look at Veiovis' history -- largely through Maine court documents and previously published stories -- offers a picture of an increasingly self-loathing person who lapsed into recreational drug use, cultivated a fascination with knives and adopted demon worship to repel people....
A neuropsychologist who evaluated him said teachers noted a preocccupation with devil worship and resistance to authority. Another counselor said the boy "exhibited very dangerous and threatening behavior" and didn't want to change....
Then, in August 1999, he watched in his darkened downtown Augusta apartment as his 17-year-old girlfriend took a razor and sliced a 16-year-old girl in the small of her back.
The wound required 32 stitches to close.
Gutfinski and his girlfriend then licked the blood and kissed.
He told police he was a vampire, but one who was without fangs and able to go about in daylight.
At that 2000 sentencing hearing, Roy C. Gutfinski Sr. told the judge his son was a very active child who was later diagnosed as hyperactive, and hospitalized for drug problems....
After the 2000 conviction, Gutfinski began altering his appearance, with small horns that appear as bumps implanted in his forehead, filing his teeth, reshaping his earlobes and gathering tattoos.
He also had small horns implanted in his septum. However, those long, tooth-like horns in his nose are absent in photos of his recent court appearance in Massachusetts.
A tattooed "666" on his forehead showed prominently....

SPRINGFIELD -- Adam Lee Hall hung his head after hearing the jury's verdict of guilty on charges of first-degree murder....
Hall, with David Chalue, 46, of North Adams, and Caius Veiovis, 32, of Pittsfield, allegedly kidnapped, tortured and then shot David Glasser, Edward Frampton and Robert Chadwell in August 2011 and buried the bodies in Becket, according to testimony.
Chalue and Veiovis remain in jail without bail; their trials are to begin in the coming months....

NEW YORK (AP) - Two of the three Ohio women held captive for years in a Cleveland house have a book deal.
Viking announced Monday that it has acquired the planned book by Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus. The book is currently untitled and is scheduled to come out in 2015.
Berry and DeJesus are working with Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post reporters Mary Jordan and Kevin Sullivan....
Berry, DeJesus and Michelle Knight were rescued in May and their kidnapper, Ariel Castro, was arrested and eventually sentenced to life in prison....
Knight is working on her own memoir, which Weinstein Books plans to publish next spring.

....Knight's short stature, spiky red hair and lip and nose piercings belie the backbone of a fighter who can teach others how to survive in the worst of circumstances, say mental health experts who work with trauma victims.
In her first public interview, Knight describes in graphic detail how her kidnapper, Ariel Castro, abused her and tied her up "like a fish."
With apparent poise, she described how Castro abducted her while she was lost trying to get to an appointment. He lured her into his house by telling her he had puppies that he would give her. He tied her up in the basement with rusted chains and put a helmet on her head.
Knight was matter-of-fact as she talked about how Castro tied her up after he lured her into the house....
"I hated him," she said. "I told him he was a monster."....
Psychologists who work with trauma and sexual abuse victims say the Cleveland woman is an example of resiliency.
"She's a survivor," says Charles Figley, professor of disaster mental health at Tulane University and editor of the Encyclopedia of Trauma. He says she took charge during her captivity, bore the brunt of Castro's attacks and survived.
"Now that she's out, she's taking charge again," he says. By telling her story her way, it's clear that Knight doesn't want to be cast as a victim, he says....

(CNN) -- Six months after she was freed from the "house of horrors" where Ariel Castro held her captive for 11 years, Cleveland kidnapping victim Michelle Knight is speaking out.
In an exclusive interview with Dr. Phil McGraw scheduled to air Tuesday and Wednesday, Knight describes a moment when Castro trapped her in a room and tied her up with an orange extension cord....
"It's astounding to me that she had the strength that she did," McGraw told "Anderson Cooper 360." "She says that she was referred to as the unbreakable one. She fought him every step of the way."....
In August, Castro was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years after he pleaded guilty to 937 counts, including murder and kidnapping....
But since their rescue, Knight hasn't shied away from speaking out. "After 11 years, I am finally being heard, and it's liberating," she said in a powerful statement at Castro's sentencing describing the abuse she endured.

Jimmy Savile harassed the wife of a record label boss at a dinner party hosted by Tony Blair at Chequers, it has been revealed.
Alan McGee said he had wanted to punch Savile after he persistently chatted up and tried to kiss his wife Kate.
The New Labour donor, who discovered rock band Oasis, said he resisted only because he did not want to embarrass Mr Blair.
Mr McGee, 53, said: ‘At dinner, Kate was between Jimmy Savile and Judi Dench. Savile started to hit on Kate, kissing his way up her arms, kissing her fingers.
‘I was thinking, “What a dirty old man” but at Chequers it’s not done to break Jimmy Savile’s nose.
‘Kate came over and said, “He’s a pervert”. He left her alone once she was next to me.’....

Four women have now come forward to say that a neighbor of notorious kidnapper and rapist Arial Castro raped them, with three of the alleged victims being family members.
Elias Acevedo has confessed to the kidnapping, rape and murder of two women in a Cleveland neighborhood in the 1990s, at a time when he lived close to Castro, as well as additional rape and kidnapping charges.
A fourth woman has now come forward to report that she too was raped by Acevado, and paternity testing has shown that he fathered a child with one of his own family.
Elias Acevedo, 49, has been charged with the kidnapping, rape and murder of 30-year-old Pamela Pemberton who was found strangled in 1994, and Christina Adkins, who was 18 and five months pregnant at the time of her disappearance in 1995.
He faces 293 counts, including charges involving the rape and kidnap of children....
The Guardian reports that Acevedo led detectives to the spot where he dumped Adkins' body in a manhole under a busy highway overpass on the Ohio city’s west side.
Remains recovered from the manhole were sent for DNA testing and test results today proved the remains were those of Adkins.
Acevedo has a long criminal history that dates back to 1988, including theft, receiving stolen property and a 2003 rape and kidnapping case for which he served three years in prison....

Four women have now come forward to say that a neighbor of notorious kidnapper and rapist Arial Castro raped them, with three of the alleged victims being family members.
Elias Acevedo has confessed to the kidnapping, rape and murder of two women in a Cleveland neighborhood in the 1990s, at a time when he lived close to Castro, as well as additional rape and kidnapping charges.
A fourth woman has now come forward to report that she too was raped by Acevado, and paternity testing has shown that he fathered a child with one of his own family.
Elias Acevedo, 49, has been charged with the kidnapping, rape and murder of 30-year-old Pamela Pemberton who was found strangled in 1994, and Christina Adkins, who was 18 and five months pregnant at the time of her disappearance in 1995.
He faces 293 counts, including charges involving the rape and kidnap of children....
The Guardian reports that Acevedo led detectives to the spot where he dumped Adkins' body in a manhole under a busy highway overpass on the Ohio city’s west side.
Remains recovered from the manhole were sent for DNA testing and test results today proved the remains were those of Adkins.
Acevedo has a long criminal history that dates back to 1988, including theft, receiving stolen property and a 2003 rape and kidnapping case for which he served three years in prison....

Christopher Kloman, a former teacher at an elite Virginia prep school, was sentenced to 43 years in prison for sexually molesting five female students in the 1960s. The girls, adults now, were between 12 and 14 years old at the time.
Kloman, now 74, taught at the Potomac School in McLean, Va., from 1965 to 1994. According to WUSA, victims came forward after one of them, Ann Sullivan, ran into her former teacher while he was substitute teaching at her son's school two years ago.
“As a mature woman, a lawyer and a mother, I was fed up,” Sullivan testified at a hearing Friday, according to the Washington Post. “I was more than fed up. One girl is too much. One generation is too much. ... The girls at my son’s school were the exact same age I was when he assaulted me.”
Sullivan's chance encounter with her attacker in 2011 sparked a criminal investigation that culminated in Kloman being charged with four counts of indecent liberties and one count of abduction with intent to defile. He pleaded guilty those charges....

The lawyers who defended a Cleveland man who held three women captive for a decade say their client clearly fits the profile of sociopathic disorder and that they hope researchers study him for clues that could be used to stop other predators.
Attorneys Craig Weintraub and Jaye Schlachet told the Cleveland Jewish News in a wide-ranging interview that while the public can easily label Ariel Castro a monster and evil, studies must be conducted to determine whether his issue is genetic, organic or "limited simply to mental health."
Castro admitted to kidnapping and repeatedly raping the women until they escaped his home in May. He has was sentenced this month to life in prison plus 1,000 years and during his sentencing attributed his "sickness" to an addiction to pornography and sexual abuse he himself suffered as a child.
But, Weintraub said, "there are a lot of people walking the streets who were victims of sexual abuse and addicted to pornography who aren't kidnapping women off the streets, holding them hostage for 10 years and terrorizing them.
"A lot of people don't do that. They get help. For whatever reason, he lacked the insight to get help, or desire, which exacerbated his mental health issues."....

The BBC is expected to pay out around £4million to 120 of paedophile presenter Jimmy Savile’s alleged victims.
It works out at an average of £33,000 per person – but is less than the £4.1million the broadcaster gave its executive board in 12 months.
The level of compensation is expected to be agreed towards the end of the year when former high court judge Dame Janet Smith, 71, publishes the findings of her probe into the “culture and practices” at the BBC during the Savile era.
The review has uncovered two more alleged suspects linked to the pervert, who died aged 84 in 2011.
Solicitor Alan Collins, whose firm Pannone represents a number of victims, said: “Many have suffered substantial damage because of the sexual abuse they were subjected to by the now disgraced Jimmy Savile and to all right thinking people they should come first.”
He added: “To think that any compensation they receive would be a fraction of that paid to executives in the wake of the scandal seems manifestly unjust.”
He confirmed he is still being contacted by alleged Savile victims....
About 40 of the Savile abuse claimants were quizzed in detail about what allegedly happened to them while giving evidence in Dame Janet’s review.She heard allegations that women were abused by Savile on BBC premises or in outside broadcast vehicles while other staff were present....
The police watchdog has been blasted for probing just one force out of nine accused of failing to investigate Jimmy Savile.
So far only the West Yorkshire force has referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
Now forces in Surrey, Sussex, Thames Valley, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Cheshire, North Yorkshire and the Met have been asked to explain why they did not do the same.

CLEVELAND — Demolition crews leveled Ariel Castro's former house of horror Wednesday not long after one of three young women held captive there for 11 years brought a bundle of yellow balloons in memory of other missing children.
Cheers erupted on Seymour Avenue as the heavy equipment clawed away part of the roof and walls of the rundown house where Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight were rescued after years of living in chains.
Crews reduced the two-story house to rubble in a little more than an hour. The demolition was carried live online and also drew crowds of neighbors and onlookers.
Castro, 53, pleaded guilty last month to 937 charges including rape, kidnapping and aggravated murder charges in connection with the abduction of the three young women, who were rescued May 6.
Knight, who also spoke at Castro's sentencing in a moving condemnation of his crimes, made a brief statement and asked God to grant strength to those still missing and told their families to have hope. She says the yellow balloons represented those still out there waiting to be found....

LOS ANGELES – In therapy sessions, the priest confessed the shocking details he'd kept hidden for years: He had molested more than 100 boys, including his 5-year-old brother. He had sex with male prostitutes, and frequented gay strip clubs.
The admissions of the Rev. Ruben Martinez are included among nearly 2,000 pages of secret files unsealed Wednesday that were kept on priests, brothers and nuns who belonged to religious orders but were accused of child molestation while working within the Los Angeles archdiocese.
The papers, which were released under the terms of a $660 million settlement agreement reached in 2007, are the first glimpse at what religious orders knew about the men and women they posted in Roman Catholic schools and parishes in the Los Angeles area. The archdiocese itself released thousands of pages under court order this year for its own priests who were accused of sexual abuse, but the full picture of the problem remained elusive without the orders' records. Several dozen more files are expected to be released by the fall.
The documents cover five different religious orders that employed 10 priests or religious brothers and two nuns who were all accused in civil lawsuits of molesting children. Among them, the accused had 21 alleged victims between the 1950s and the 1980s....

"They are really looking for a meal, they are looking for shelter, they are looking for someone to take care of them."
Another victim, identified as "Alex," told interviewers she became a prostitute at the age of 16, when she felt she had no other options to feed and clothe herself.
The raids also resulted in the arrests of 150 "pimps" and other individuals, according to an FBI press release.
The rescues were the product of Operation Cross Country, a three-day nationwide initiative to aid victims of underage prostitution....
Since 2003, the Innocence Lost National Initiative has netted the rescue of more than 2,700 children.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man accused in the deaths of three women whose bodies were found wrapped in trash bags was indicted Monday on 14 counts including multiple charges of aggravated murder and kidnapping.
Michael Madison is being charged in connection with the deaths of Shirellda H. Terry, Angela H. Deskins and Shetisha D. Sheeley....
A Cuyahoga County grand jury charged Madison with six counts of aggravated murder, two for each victim under different legal theories, plus three counts of kidnapping, three counts of gross abuse of a corpse, one count of rape and one count of having weapons under disability, the county prosecutor's office announced Monday....
The indictment states that Madison raped Terry between July 10 and July 19. Terry's family has said she was last seen July 10, leaving a Cleveland elementary school where she had a summer job.
Madison was classified as a sex offender in 2002, when he was sentenced to four years in prison for attempted rape, according to Cuyahoga County court records. He had previous convictions in 2000 and 2001 for drug-related charges....

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight "are satisfied by this resolution to the case, and are looking forward to having these legal proceedings draw to a final close in the near future," said a statement released by the law firm Jones Day, which is representing the women.
"They continue to desire their privacy. They do not wish to speak to the media or anyone else, and they thank people for continuing to respect their privacy as they grow stronger," the statement said.
Castro, 53, pleaded guilty Friday to 937 criminal counts of kidnapping, rape and aggravated murder. The terms of the plea mean he will likely receive life in prison with no possibility for parole, plus 1,000 years. He will be formally sentenced Thursday.
Mental health and legal experts say it is a good thing the women do not have to testify....

(CBS/AP) CLEVELAND - One of the three Cleveland kidnapping victims is set to testify against the man charged with holding them captive for up to ten years in his home, a source tells CBS News. It would be their first meeting between victim and captor since the three women escaped from the Cleveland home on May 6.
As part of a plea deal yet to be accepted by a judge, Ariel Castro pleaded guilty to holding the three women captive for about a decade.
Sources tell CBS News' investigative unit that one of the three women is expected to testify live in court during the Thursday hearing, during which Ariel Castro will be formally sentenced. The two other women may confront Castro via video, though those plans have not yet been finalized....

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight "are satisfied by this resolution to the case, and are looking forward to having these legal proceedings draw to a final close in the near future," said a statement released by the law firm Jones Day, which is representing the women.
"They continue to desire their privacy. They do not wish to speak to the media or anyone else, and they thank people for continuing to respect their privacy as they grow stronger," the statement said.
Castro, 53, pleaded guilty Friday to 937 criminal counts of kidnapping, rape and aggravated murder. The terms of the plea mean he will likely receive life in prison with no possibility for parole, plus 1,000 years. He will be formally sentenced Thursday.
Mental health and legal experts say it is a good thing the women do not have to testify....

It would be their first meeting between victim and captor since the three women escaped from the Cleveland home on May 6.
As part of a plea deal yet to be accepted by a judge, Ariel Castro pleaded guilty to holding the three women captive for about a decade.
Sources tell CBS News' investigative unit that one of the three women is expected to testify live in court during the Thursday hearing, during which Ariel Castro will be formally sentenced. The two other women may confront Castro via video, though those plans have not yet been finalized....

Margaret Thatcher made repeated attempts to win a knighthood for Jimmy Savile despite warnings about his ‘manner of life’.
The former prime minister made at least five requests for the now-disgraced DJ to be considered for the top honour, but senior civil servants voiced fears about his ‘strange and complex’ private life.
Previously unseen documents from the Cabinet Office reveal the extent of unease about the BBC presenter, almost three decades before he was finally unmasked as a predatory paedophile.
There is no suggestion that Baroness Thatcher or her aides were aware of his vile abuse of children as young as eight.
But the official documents show that while BBC bosses were apparently willing to ignore the presenter’s private life, Whitehall mandarins privately voiced their misgivings about handing him a knighthood.
The files, made public under the Freedom of Information Act, show Mrs Thatcher wanted to bestow the honour to reward Savile’s charity work....
It was only after his death in 2011, aged 84, that he was finally unmasked as a predatory paedophile with more than 450 victims....

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A judge on Wednesday handed down prison terms of at least six years to a Roman Catholic priest and a former teacher in a sex-abuse case that brought down a Philadelphia church official.
The Rev. Charles Engelhardt and Bernard Shero maintained their innocence, and the judge threw out the most serious conviction against Engelhardt for lack of evidence.
Still, Engelhardt, a 66-year-old Oblate who had not previously been accused of abusing children, was sentenced to six to 12 years in prison. And Shero, convicted of rape, was sentenced to eight to 16 years....

Ariel Castro, 52, the former school bus driver accused of holding three women captive in his Cleveland home for a decade, was charged late Friday with murder and more than 300 counts of rape and kidnapping.
The Cuyahoga County grand jury's 329-count indictment charges Castro with one count of aggravated murder for allegedly terminating one of his captives' pregnancies, 139 counts of rape and 177 charges of kidnapping, seven counts of gross sexual imposition, three counts of felony assault and one count of possession of criminal tools dating from the time of the first woman's disappearance until February 2007.
County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty said in a statement that the investigation is still underway. Additional charges could follow in a superseding indictment.
The indictment charges Castro as a "sexually violent predator" who committed the murder and rapes in the course of a kidnapping. Those charges are considered aggravating factors that call for stiffer penalties. The murder charge is tied to one victim's fourth pregnancy, the indictment said....

A leading QC led an investigation into sexual misconduct at the corporation’s flagship music programme in 1972 following concerns at the time and uncovered what he described as “immorality”.
But the inquiry’s conclusions were kept secret for four decades and only unearthed after a Freedom of Information request by The Telegraph.
The emergence of the 64-page report - which was circulated to the then director general and chairman - will further fuel allegations that the BBC failed to protect teenage girls from Jimmy Savile, the corporation’s then most feted star who was unmasked last year as Britain’s most prolific sex offender. It will also bolster a series of legal claims being brought by Savile’s victims against the BBC....
A BBC spokeswoman said: “In 1971 allegations of corruption at Top of The Pops were made by a newspaper. The BBC took these allegations extremely seriously and commissioned Brian Neill QC to prepare an independent report to establish what had happened....

May 26, 2013 COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A prosecutor faces numerous obstacles as he weighs whether to bring death penalty charges against a man accused of kidnapping three women and forcing one of them into miscarriages through starvation and beatings, capital punishment experts say.
Most agree that such charges are possible against Ariel Castro, though not without legal fights starting with constitutional questions over the definition of a murder victim for the purposes of a death penalty case.
Cuyahoga County prosecutor Tim McGinty said at a news conference on May 9, days after the women were rescued from Castro's run-down home, that capital punishment "must be reserved for those crimes that are truly the worst examples of human conduct."

John Jamelske, a scruffy bottle-picker from Syracuse, regarded himself as smooth with the ladies. To the rest of the world, he was a kidnapper and sexual predator.
Before there was Ariel Castro, Cleveland’s industrious triple kidnapper, there was Jamelske, New York’s dungeon dragoon.
For 15 years beginning in 1988, he held a succession of females as sex slaves in a filthy bunker beneath his house in upstate DeWitt. Jamelske was finally busted on April 3, 2003, three weeks before Castro kidnapped Amanda Berry, the second of his three victims.
Castro seemed shamed by his arrest. Jamelske, on the other hand, claimed his victims were “buddies.” He said he chained them “only a tiny little” and saw himself as “a tremendous influence” on them.
“No, I never considered anybody a kidnap victim,” he told the Syracuse Post-Standard. He explained that kidnappers demand cash ransoms. He didn’t do that....
The law disagreed, and convicted kidnapper Jamelske, 78, is living out his life in prison.
His case didn’t get the national attention of the dramatic escape of the three women in Cleveland earlier in May, but Jamelske’s story is just as implausible.
Though he described himself as “a little bit crazy,” Jamelske had a rather ordinary life until he reached his 50s. He was married with three sons, had a community college degree, and worked at grocery stores in the Syracuse area, where he grew up.
His life turned in the 1980s. He lost his job and began scavenging for bottles and cans. His hoarding tendencies flourished as he stacked his house floor to ceiling with cast-off crap....
Jamelske began cruising in his distinctive vintage Mercury Comet, seeking females from the wrong side of the tracks. And he built a 12-by-24 foot bunker accessible through a crawl space behind a hidden door in his garage. He told busybodies it was a storm shelter. It featured a plastic bucket toilet, a filthy foam cushion as a bed, and a salvaged bathtub filled with cold water from a garden hose.
In September 1988, he lured a 14-year-old girl into his car and secreted her in the dungeon for two years. The girl was reported missing by her family, and they were shocked when she came home in 1989. The victim later said Jamelske had threatened to kill her brother, so she lied and said she had run away from home....
In 1995, Jamelske abducted a second 14-year-old. For two years, he subjected the teen to daily sexual assaults — all while his wife, ill with cancer, was upstairs. He freed that victim in 1997, again with a threat if she squealed. MARIANNA - A Circuit Court judge has denied a request to exhume the bodies from gravesites at the Dozier School for Boys in Marianna.
In the court order, Judge William Wright of Jackson County Circuit Court states the petition was denied because the Petitioner "failed to meet the threshold for an order granting exhumation in a civil case," and that the "Interim Report prepared by the University of South Florida does not provide any information or opinion regarding what physical evidence is likely to be found that will lead to the identification of the human remains or a determination of the causes of death."
A local survivor of the school said it's just a temporary roadblock in the search to find the remains of so many boys who were forgotten.
From his home in Clearwater, Robert Straley remembers the first day he walked into the Dozier School for Boys. The year was 1963 and Straley was just 13 years old.
Looking back, Straley calls it "one of the most horrible times of my life, if not the worst."
On the first night, he said men in charge gave him the first of three floggings during his 10 and a half months there. "I was in a state of shock,” Straley said. “I didn't even know what was going on. It was like it was happening to somebody else. It was like a bad nightmare."
Investigators said the beatings went on at the school for nearly 70 years and some of the boys would simply disappear. But then in 2007, Straley and others began asking questions and wanted to know where those boys ended up.

Lawyers, judges, psychologists and representatives of women’s groups interviewed by The Crime Report describe a broken family court system that is already burdened with a heavy caseload and too few judges—many of whom are forced to rotate between cases—and in which serious criminal allegations of domestic or sexual abuse are routinely ignored. The crushing financial costs of pursuing long custody battles is an additional burden on indigent mothers, who get little or no legal support. The odds are particularly stacked against children at risk when the court battle revolves over “he said, she said” arguments.

Former D.C. area swimming coach Rick Curl was sentenced to seven years in prison for child sexual abuse at a hearing Thursday that also featured a revelation from Curl’s attorney that the University of Maryland knew about the abuse more than 25 years ago.
The sentencing in Montgomery County Circuit Court brought closure to a criminal case centered on Curl’s five-year sexual abuse of a swimming pupil that began in the 1980s, but it also raised new questions about the University of Maryland’s role in the decades-old case.
The victim, Kelley Currin, now 43, was 13 when the abuse began. She swam for the Curl-Burke Swim Club, one of the nation’s largest such organizations, through which Curl, now 63, had guided athletes to Olympic gold medals.
Currin’s parents became aware of her sexual encounters with Curl in 1986 and confronted the coach around their kitchen table, Thomas Kelly Jr., Curl’s attorney, said at the sentencing hearing.
They demanded that Curl sign a letter admitting that he had had sex with their daughter, who was then known as Kelley Davies. At some point, the attorney said, the letter was given to the athletic director at the University of Maryland, where, in 1987, Curl began coaching swimming and diving, in addition to his private coaching job. Experts question death penalty in Ohio missing women case
May 26, 2013 COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A prosecutor faces numerous obstacles as he weighs whether to bring death penalty charges against a man accused of kidnapping three women and forcing one of them into miscarriages through starvation and beatings, capital punishment experts say.
Most agree that such charges are possible against Ariel Castro, though not without legal fights starting with constitutional questions over the definition of a murder victim for the purposes of a death penalty case.
Cuyahoga County prosecutor Tim McGinty said at a news conference on May 9, days after the women were rescued from Castro's run-down home, that capital punishment "must be reserved for those crimes that are truly the worst examples of human conduct."

John Jamelske, a scruffy bottle-picker from Syracuse, regarded himself as smooth with the ladies. To the rest of the world, he was a kidnapper and sexual predator.
Before there was Ariel Castro, Cleveland’s industrious triple kidnapper, there was Jamelske, New York’s dungeon dragoon.
For 15 years beginning in 1988, he held a succession of females as sex slaves in a filthy bunker beneath his house in upstate DeWitt. Jamelske was finally busted on April 3, 2003, three weeks before Castro kidnapped Amanda Berry, the second of his three victims.
Castro seemed shamed by his arrest. Jamelske, on the other hand, claimed his victims were “buddies.” He said he chained them “only a tiny little” and saw himself as “a tremendous influence” on them.
“No, I never considered anybody a kidnap victim,” he told the Syracuse Post-Standard. He explained that kidnappers demand cash ransoms. He didn’t do that....
The law disagreed, and convicted kidnapper Jamelske, 78, is living out his life in prison.
His case didn’t get the national attention of the dramatic escape of the three women in Cleveland earlier in May, but Jamelske’s story is just as implausible.
Though he described himself as “a little bit crazy,” Jamelske had a rather ordinary life until he reached his 50s. He was married with three sons, had a community college degree, and worked at grocery stores in the Syracuse area, where he grew up.
His life turned in the 1980s. He lost his job and began scavenging for bottles and cans. His hoarding tendencies flourished as he stacked his house floor to ceiling with cast-off crap....
Jamelske began cruising in his distinctive vintage Mercury Comet, seeking females from the wrong side of the tracks. And he built a 12-by-24 foot bunker accessible through a crawl space behind a hidden door in his garage. He told busybodies it was a storm shelter. It featured a plastic bucket toilet, a filthy foam cushion as a bed, and a salvaged bathtub filled with cold water from a garden hose.
In September 1988, he lured a 14-year-old girl into his car and secreted her in the dungeon for two years. The girl was reported missing by her family, and they were shocked when she came home in 1989. The victim later said Jamelske had threatened to kill her brother, so she lied and said she had run away from home....
In 1995, Jamelske abducted a second 14-year-old. For two years, he subjected the teen to daily sexual assaults — all while his wife, ill with cancer, was upstairs. He freed that victim in 1997, again with a threat if she squealed. Mum Nancy Ruiz says that was the only glimpse of the outside world Gina DeJesus, now 23, was allowed in her nine years of captivity.
She told a Spanish TV show: “She knew I hadn’t given up looking because she had seen me on television.

In just the last few days, we’ve seen a series of news stories involving violence against women. The violence comes in different forms—physical, psychological, financial—and from different quarters—a former school-bus driver in Cleveland, the NRA convention in Houston, the military, Congress—and so it’s not surprising that the media, as usual, are delivering these stories as unrelated incidents. But arriving almost simultaneously, these tales of misogyny should jolt us all to connect the dots and to shine an unblinking light on the violence against women that’s always there, just below the surface....
When I first saw the photo of a freed Amanda Berry with her sister and daughter, and tried to imagine the women’s unimaginable captivity, I couldn’t get another set of images out of my mind—that of “The Ex,” a target mannequin that squirts blood when you shoot her. “The Ex” (variously called “The Ex-Girlfriend” and “Alexa”) is a large-breasted white woman, her clothes party ripped off, blood dripping from her mouth down her cleavage, and she was sold with other “bleeding zombie targets” at the NRA convention in Houston last weekend. A target mannequin that looks like Obama painted green (one happy customer calls him “Barry” in a video that has been removed) also made the news. Buzzfeed reported that the NRA asked the vendor, Zombie Industries, to remove it from display, but it continued to be sold, a reminder of the racism that fuels the pro-gun paranoia. But the NRA didn’t object to displaying “The Ex,” and she still appears on the company’s website....
Tim Murphy of Mother Jones cites other shelters and domestic violence programs that are being reduced or completely eliminated in Louisiana, Kentucky, Rhode Island, Oregon and other states. “The projections are bleak,” he writes.
Sen. Tom Harkin’s (D-Iowa) office estimates that 70,120 fewer domestic violence victims will have access to recovery programs and shelters; 35,900 fewer people will get help obtaining non-shelter services such as restraining orders and sexual assault treatment. Cuts to programs related to the Victims Against Crime Act will hurt another 310,574 people....
And you know that big-shock Pentagon report released Tuesday that estimates 26,000 sexual assaults took place in the armed forces in 2012, a 37 percent increase over 2010? The report that also said fewer than 10 percent of the sex-assault cases end with a conviction at court-martial, while 62 percent of victims who dare to report an assault are rewarded with retaliation?....
In the Pentagon report above, an estimated 13,900 of the 1.2 million active duty men said they had experienced some form of sexual assault in the past year (a far smaller portion than the active duty women). About a quarter of the victims of non-family child abductions are boys. And from 1994 to 2010, about four in five victims of intimate partner violence were female, according to the Bureau of Justice stats. ....Ariel Castro terrorized his wife. He has a history of domestic violence and restraining orders.
What he’s accused of doing to three other women is not classified as domestic violence, said Linda Dooley, who is the CEO of the Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center in Cleveland, but his alleged tactics of power and control are classic traits of a domestic violence offender.
“He clearly isolated the victims, manipulated them — that’s how he wound up getting them to his house — and abused them both physically and emotionally.”
Domestic violence offenders are masters at manipulation, Ms. Dooley added.
“I think the emotional mind-set is really a big part of this [Cleveland case], especially when you hear that he [Castro] intentionally left the door open and if they [victims] came out, he would beat them,” she said.
Emotional abuse takes a toll.
“When you’re in this day after day, year after year, and no one’s rescuing you, no one’s hearing you, many times victims give up.”
But contrary to common belief, Ms. Dolley added, victims of ritual abuse are anything but passive.
“Every day, they’re actively looking at how to survive," Ms. Dooley said. “Escaping is secondary.
