 Lawmakers are getting closer to introducing a bill that could give convicted abusers — especially ritualistic abusers — more time in prison.

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Lawmakers are getting closer to introducing a bill that could give convicted abusers — especially ritualistic abusers — more time in prison.  Child abuse prevention advocates call ritualistic child abuse an “evil practice,” and one that happens in Utah far more often than people may think. On Capitol Hill Wednesday, lawmakers talked about a bill that could give convicted abusers more time in prison....

When people hear the word “ritual,” many people think of religious ceremonies, but investigators say those aren’t the only kinds and that ritualistic abuse may involve many different things.  One woman, Cara Baldree, said she endured this kind of abuse when she was young. She can remember being groomed by her abuser when she was just six years old — her abuser would frequently take her out of school to attack her.  She said, “He had threatened to kill me and my family so severely. He told me if he ever showed up at my school then I had to go with him or he would kill people.”

Feeling like her loved ones’ lives were in her hands, she said she did as she was told and was abused many, many times, physically and mentally.  Baldree said her abuser would constantly tell her she was “God’s mistake,” and that her attacker would add a religious element to the abuse.  “He would use scriptures. He would connect things like, ‘This is like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden,” Baldree said.

At the time, no one knew what was happening to her. She said she could disassociate from the abuse, so when she returned to class she would appear as if nothing happened.  Decades later, memories of her abuse came flooding back. As far as she knows, her abuser was never arrested or charged....

Randall said, “A ritualistic abuser is going to be somebody who will use whatever tools they have, whether that’s school, whether that’s church, whether it’s work, whatever tool they have to set up a plan to keep the victim quiet.”  If the bill passes, ritualistic abuse charges would be used to enhance the sentences against someone convicted of child abuse, meaning they could spend more time in prison. It would also require law enforcement to go through the latest child abuse prevention training to spot the signs of possible ritualistic abuse....

Randall disagreed, saying his office has investigated multiple claims of ritualistic abuse in recent years.  “One of the biggest aspects of this bill is the acknowledgment that these things have happened in the past, so that these victims come forward and we can get them services. We can get them help,” Randall said.

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Prosecutors and lawmakers in Utah have said they were stunned to learn there was essentially no law against child torture in the state, adding that two high-profile abuse cases in Utah convinced them that needs to change.
If a new bill passes, it would give serious prison time to anyone convicted of torturing a child. However, some supporters have doubts that it would actually prevent cases like this from happening in the first place.

Supporters of a bill being drafted said aggravated child abuse may sound like a very serious charge, but it's just a second-degree felony. When it comes to the constant torture that victims like Ruby Franke’s children went through, they don’t believe abusers get enough time behind bars....

Clarke said, “100 percent. I feel like what happened in that case was torture of those children.”  He's drafting a bill that would make child torture a stand-alone first-degree felony, with a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison. When does a case of abuse cross the line into torture?

Dr. Antoinette Laskey, Primary Children’s Hospital’s Child Abuse Medical Director, said, “Child torture cases are cases that often involve multiple different kinds of child abuse over an extended period of time. They can include physical abuse, confinement, starvation and severe psychological abuse.”

Laskey said abusers all over the country are using many of the same tactics, like binding kids with ropes or handcuffs, starving children, physical abuse and excessive athletic exercise. Plus, she said many of them are documenting what they’re doing.

“These are caregivers that are video taping and literally have their children on security cameras 24 hours a day and are capturing footage of what is happening to them,” she said.  Laskey said her team has treated 12 child torture patients since 2020, which is far more than she ever saw during the first 15 years of her career — and they don’t know why it's happening.

“What’s really upsetting is that, nationally, we’re seeing this as a trend that we don’t really understand. While we’re seeing it here in Utah, this is not a unique-to-Utah phenomenon. I’ve had a number of cases that come from surrounding states that are remarkably similar,” Laskey said.

Kevin Franke, Ruby Franke’s former husband, supports the bill, believing child welfare laws need a major overhaul in Utah.  He said, “The child welfare laws that we have in this state, right now, tend to strongly protect parents, parents’ privacy and parents’ rights as opposed to children, children’s rights, children’s protections, children’s safety and well-being.”....

District 29 Sen. Don Ipson is sponsoring the bill, which he believes has strong support.  It's hard to predict whether the bill will be enough to convince abusers to stop targeting kids.  “I think it’s hard to decide what’s going to be a deterrent to someone who has that sick of a mind. What is the deterrent, for them? But, we’ve got to try, and we’ve got to make penalties if it’s not a deterrent,” Ipson said.  Along with ten years in prison, anyone convicted of child torture would also be placed on the Sex, Kidnap and Child Abuse Offender Registry if the bill passes.  Ipson said they’re going to keep fine-tuning the bill before they present it to the legislature.

Notorious daycare paedophile Ashley Paul Griffith sentenced to life in prison for abusing children in Australia and Italy  By Eden Gillespie 11/29/2024

One of Australia's most notorious paedophiles has been sentenced to life in prison after confessing to raping and abusing scores of children in daycare centres in Australia and overseas.

Former childcare worker Ashley Paul Griffith pleaded guilty in September to more than 300 charges against 69 children in early learning centres in Brisbane and Italy over almost two decades.

Griffith will have a non-parole period of 27 years, with Judge Paul Smith describing his offending as "depraved". He won't be eligible to apply until 2049....

He said Griffith's "risk of re-offending would be high" if he was released into the community. "This was very serious, offending in terms of length and scale. The victims were very vulnerable, and there was a significant breach of trust," Judge Smith said.  Judge Smith said the case warranted the maximum penalty due to the length of the offences, the number of victims, their age and vulnerability, the planning involved, and the fact that he uploaded the abuse online....

Griffith was initially charged with more than 1,000 offences by the AFP in 2022 after they found thousands of photographs and videos related to his abuse on the dark web.

Hundreds of charges were later dropped. The 307 offences against 69 children occurred between 2003 and 2022.

They include 190 counts of indecent treatment, 28 counts of rape, 67 counts of making child exploitation material, four counts of producing child abuse material outside of Australia, and 15 counts of repeated sexual conduct with a child.

Most of the victims were aged between two and five years old, but one could have been as young as one. Ashley Paul Griffith is being sentenced in the District Court in Brisbane after pleading guilty to 307 charges against 69 children at early learning centres in Brisbane and Italy. Griffith's sentencing began on Thursday, with victims sharing harrowing statements about how his abuse had impacted them.

The court heard he had offended against his victims while they were awake and asleep. When they were awake, he often gave them an iPad to distract them. Some of the abuse lasted up to 30 minutes and occurred when other children were nearby.

The court heard he filmed much of the abuse and would regularly go back and review the footage he made for his own sexual gratification.  He would also upload the abuse to a child exploitation site on the dark web and left comments advising other people how they could abuse children....

At one notorious industrial school in Dublin, each child was required to string 60 rosaries each weekday and 90 on Saturdays. Students who did not reach their quotas were beaten…."

Sinéad O'Connor, the Irish singer known for her intense and beautiful voice, her political convictions and the personal tumult that overtook her later years, has died. She was 56 years old.

O'Connor's recording of "Nothing Compares 2 U" was one of the biggest hits of the early 1990s. Her death was announced by her family. The cause and date of her death were not made public. The statement said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time." ....

"I grew up in a severely abusive situation, my mother being the perpetrator," O'Connor told NPR in 2014. "So much of child abuse is about being voiceless, and it's a wonderfully healing thing to just make sounds."

O'Connor started making sounds in a home for juvenile delinquents, after a childhood spent getting booted out of Catholic schools and busted, repeatedly, for shoplifting. But a nun gave her a guitar and she began to sing, on the streets of Dublin and then with a popular Irish band called In Tua Nua.

O'Connor came to the attention of U2's guitarist The Edge, and she got herself signed to the Ensign/Chrysalis label. Her second studio album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got, went double platinum in 1990, partly because of a hit love song written by Prince: "Nothing Compares 2 U."

I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got was a distillation of O'Connor's prayerful sense of music and her fury over social injustice. She rejected its four Grammy nominations as being too commercial — and, in her words, "for destroying the human race." She was banned from a New Jersey arena when she refused to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner," for its lyrics glorifying bombs bursting in air.

In 1992, at the height of her fame, Sinéad O'Connor appeared on Saturday Night Live. In her performance, she raised her voice against racism and child abuse. There was dead silence when she ended the song, a version of Bob Marley's "War," by ripping up a picture of then-Pope John Paul II.

What followed in the media was a collective howl of outrage. It drowned out a prescient protest against abuse in the Catholic church. Years later, in 2010, O'Connor told NPR she'd known exactly what to expect.

"It was grand, to be honest," she said. "I mean, I knew how people would react. I knew there would be trouble. I was quite prepared to accept that. To me, it was more important that I recognized what I will call the Holy Spirit."....

Also inexplicably ignored were O’Connor’s own words, in an interview published in Time a month after her SNL appearance:

It’s not the man, obviously—it’s the office and the symbol of the organization that he represents… In Ireland we see our people are manifesting the highest incidence in Europe of child abuse. This is a direct result of the fact that they’re not in contact with their history as Irish people and the fact that in the schools, the priests have been beating the shit out of the children for years and sexually abusing them. This is the example that’s been set for the people of Ireland. They have been controlled by the church, the very people who authorized what was done to them, who gave permission for what was done to them.

Her interviewer seemed confused by the connection O’Connor was making between the Catholic Church and child abuse, so O’Connor opened up about her own history of abuse:
Sexual and physical. Psychological. Spiritual. Emotional. Verbal. I went to school every day covered in bruises, boils, sties and face welts, you name it. Nobody ever said a bloody word or did a thing. Naturally I was very angered by the whole thing, and I had to find out why it happened… The thing that helped me most was the 12-step group, the Adult Children of Alcoholics/Dysfunctional Families. My mother was a Valium addict. What happened to me is a direct result of what happened to my mother and what happened to her in her house and in school.

The interviewer remained skeptical of O’Connor’s characterization of Irish schools as playgrounds and training grounds for child abusers, and the interview moved on to different topics.

A First Nation in Canada says it has discovered hundreds of unmarked graves at the site of another former residential school for Indigenous children.

....Last month the remains of 215 children, some as young as 3 years old, were found buried on the site of what was once Canada’s largest Indigenous residential school near Kamloops, British Columbia.

Cowessess Chief Cadmus Delorme and Chief Bobby Cameron of the federation planned to hold a news conference Thursday to provide more details about the new find at the Marieval Indian Residential School, which operated from 1899 to 1997 where Cowessess is now located, about 87 miles east of Regina, the capital of Saskatchewan.

 

 

From the 19th century until the 1970s, more than 150,000 First Nations children were required to attend state-funded Christian schools as part of a program to assimilate them into Canadian society. They were forced to convert to Christianity and not allowed to speak their native languages. Many were beaten and verbally abused, and up to 6,000 are said to have died.

 

The Canadian government apologized in Parliament in 2008 and admitted that physical and sexual abuse in the schools was rampant. Many students recall being beaten for speaking their native languages; they also lost touch with their parents and customs.

 

Indigenous leaders have cited that legacy of abuse and isolation as the root cause of epidemic rates of alcoholism and drug addiction on reservations.

Her childhood was so traumatic she developed 2500 different personalities to deal with the horrific abuse she suffered. Now Jeni Haynes has found justice. news.com.au May 27, 2019

 

A woman with 2500 different personalities has brought her abuser to justice after taking the stand using the voice of six of her “alters”.

 

Jeni Haynes, 49, developed multiple personality disorder, also known as dissociative identity disorder, after being subjected to sickening sexual abuse by her father Richard Haynes from the age of four.

“My dad inflicted, chose to inflict, severe, sadistic, violent abuse. That was completely unavoidable. Inescapable. And life-threatening. And he chose to do this every day of my entire childhood,” Ms Haynes told 60 Minutes.

 

The abuse was so bad it left her with serious injuries and she’s had to endure major surgeries to repair her bowel, coccyx and anus.

 

Ms Haynes coped by developing many different personalities.

 

Psychiatrist Dr George Blair-West explains that multiple personality disorder can be a sophisticated tactic developed by children who experience significant trauma prior to the age of eight.

 

“And the thing that seems to push the mind to do this more than anything else is realising you have no way out, that nobody is going to come and get you, nobody’s there to save you, you’re on your own, and you have to come up with a solution that is entirely of your own,” he said....

 

Footage aired on 60 Minutes shows Jeni Haynes speaking with the voice of some of her different alters, which can include a four-year-old girl named “Symphony”, a 11-year-old boy “Judas” and a rugged and strong teenage boy “Muscles”.

Dr Blair-West has been treating Jeni for over 20 years and said if a functional EEG was being done on Ms Haynes “you’d see different brainwaves” when she changes between personalities as well as differences in her voice....

 

On February 21, Ms Haynes appeared before the NSW District Court to face her 74-year-old father. Authorities had to extradite him from the United Kingdom before charging him with multiple counts of rape, buggery and indecent assault.

 

After being faced with the testimony of Ms Haynes’s many different personalities, her father crumbled and plead guilty within hours of her taking the stand.

 

Although Ms Haynes is able to remain anonymous, she has chosen not to because this would also have protected her father’s identity.

 

“I want him to walk into prison with everybody knowing what he did,” she said.

Next week Ms Haynes’s father will be sentenced and she is finally looking forward to leaving the past behind....

A woman who developed multiple personality disorder after being sexually abused by her father, is to read out her 17-page victim-impact statement on Friday in court using the voices of several of the different "alter" characters.

 

Jeni Haynes wants her father, Richard Haynes, who is in the dock, to hear directly from them about the impact of what he did to her between the ages of four and 11.

 

The relentless assaults resulted in her assuming some 2500 or so "alters" in what is now called dissociative identity disorder.

 

"Alters" expected to speak could include Symphony, a four-year-old girl; Judas, an 11-year-old boy; Muscles, an 18-year-old motorcycle-loving lout; and Linda, who was cheated out of a political career....

 

Haynes, who was extradited from Britain in February 2017, decided at the last minute to plead guilty to the charges of rape, buggery and indecent assault against his daughter in Sydney in the 1970s and 1980s....

"My dad forced me to develop multiple personalities as the only way I could cope with his abuse. Dad’s abuse was extreme, violent, sadistic, unescapable, unavoidable, constant and life-threatening, not to mention overwhelming.

"Jeni would not have survived the abuse and the day-to-day consequences of the abuse without Symphony and her highly creative strategy. But Symphony is deeply traumatised, hurt, damaged and devastated as a result. As are all the other alter personalities who have done their jobs so well and kept Jeni alive. Without MPD I would be dead. This may sound melodramatic, but it is quite simply the truth."

She states the abuse destroyed her childhood, ruined her educational prospects and devastated her employability with immense economic cost as she was forced to live on a government benefit....

Dissociative Identity Disorder

Dissociative identity disorder (formerly called Multiple Personality Disorder or MPD) is defined in the DSM-IV-TR as the presence of two or more personality states or distinct identities that repeatedly take control of one’s behavior. The patient has an inability to recall personal information. The extent of this lack of recall is too great to be explained by normal forgetfulness. The disorder cannot be due to the direct physical effects of a general medical condition or substance.[1]

 

DID entails a failure to integrate certain aspects of memory, consciousness and identity. Patients experience frequent gaps in their memory for their personal history, past and present. Patients with DID report having severe physical and sexual abuse, especially during childhood. The reports of patients with DID are often validated by objective evidence.[1]

 

Physical evidence may include variations in physiological functions in different identity states, including differences in vision, levels of pain tolerance, symptoms of asthma, the response of blood glucose to insulin and sensitivity to allergens. Other physical findings may include scars from physical abuse or self-inflicted injuries, headaches or migraines, asthma and irritable bowel syndrome.[1]

 

DID is found in a variety of cultures around the world. It is diagnosed three to nine times more often in adult females than males. Females average 15 or more identities, males eight identities. The sharp rise in the reported cases of DID in the U.S. may be due the greater awareness of DID’s diagnosis, which has caused an increased identification of those that were previously undiagnosed.[1]...

 

Causes

 

The causes of dissociative identity disorder are theoretically linked with the interaction of overwhelming stress, traumatic antecedents,[3] insufficient childhood nurturing, and an innate ability to dissociate memories or experiences from consciousness.[2]

 

Prolonged child abuse is frequently a factor, with a very high percentage of patients reporting documented abuse[4] often confirmed by objective evidence.[1] The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders states that patients with DID often report having a history of severe physical and sexual abuse. The reports of patients suffering from DID are "often confirmed by objective evidence," and the DSM notes that the abusers in those situations may be inclined to "deny or distort” these acts.[1]

 

Research has consistently shown that DID is characterized by reports of extensive childhood trauma, usually child abuse.[5][6][7] Dissociation is recognized as a symptomatic presentation in response to psychological trauma, extreme emotional stress, and in association with emotional dysregulation and borderline personality disorder.[8]

 

A study of 12 murderers established the connection between early severe abuse and DID[9]. A recent psychobiological study shows that dissociative identity disorder (DID) sufferers' "origins of their ailment stem more likely from trauma" than sociogenic or iatrogenic origins...

Among the survivors was Jackie Speier, now a Democratic congresswoman from California. She joins Judy Woodruff to discuss her new book, “Undaunted: Surviving Jonestown, Summoning Courage, and Fighting Back" and current politics.

Yesterday marked the 40th anniversary of the Jonestown massacre, the mass murder-suicide that left more than 900 followers of cult leader Jim Jones dead in the South American country of Guyana.

 

Congressman Leo Ryan was in Jonestown with a small team investigating the cult's activities, and was shot and killed by Jones' followers.

 

But one of his aides on that trip, Jackie Speier, now herself a Democratic congresswoman from California, survived, and I spoke with her recently about her harrowing experience.

Congresswoman Ryan was the congressman that I worked for at the time. He made that trip to Jonestown because many of his constituents had young adults who had gotten involved in this church in San Francisco called The Peoples Temple, and was led by a man by the name of Jim Jones.

 

As more and more criticism started to come out about sexual abuse and physical abuse and money laundering, he then took about 900 of his members to Jonestown, where he had been building a commune for about two years.

And concerned relatives came to Congressman Ryan. There were defectors who also came and told him of really untoward things happening at that compound. And the congressman wanted to find out what was really going on.

The State Department was basically telling us there really wasn't a story there, there really wasn't anything to talk about. And, unfortunately, we found out something very different.

You went there. You sensed in a very short period of time that something was terribly wrong.

And then, as you were leaving with some people who were ready to defect, some of the followers of Jim Jones came and shot to death five people. And you were badly wounded, shot five times.

Immigrant Youth Shelters Have History of Child Abuse Claims: Report

Government contractors and non-profits running immigrant child shelters have been accused of sexual abuse, physical abuse, and neglect, according to a joint investigation by the Texas Tribune and Reveal.

 

“Taxpayers have paid more than $1.5 billion in the past four years” to the companies operating the shelters, the report revealed. The Office of Refugee Resettlement has given over $5 billion dollars in grants to the companies since 2003 in 18 states. In Texas, state inspectors found 400 deficiencies in the shelters, including reports of broken wrists, burns, and sexually transmitted diseases. Southwest Key, the company that runs the shelter at the deserted Walmart in Brownsville, Texas, has received over 246 violations. In Florida, a former employee at the Homestead shelter was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a “sexually inappropriate behavior” with a child—she once asked a 15-year-old for a pornographic video.

 

In New York, an 11-year-old boy was sexually assaulted by an older child at The Children’s Village shelter. Thirteen organizations have dealt with serious allegations since 2014, but ORR has only ended agreements with two of those companies....

Taxpayers have paid more than $1.5 billion in the past four years to private companies operating immigrant youth shelters accused of serious lapses in care, including neglect and sexual and physical abuse, an investigation by Reveal and The Texas Tribune has found.

 

In nearly all cases, the federal government has continued to place migrant children with the companies even after serious allegations were raised and after state inspectors cited shelters with deficiencies, government and other records show.

 

Since 2003, the U.S. Health and Human Services Department has awarded nearly $5 billion in grants through the Office of Refugee Resettlement, mostly to religious and nonprofit organizations in 18 states, to house children who arrive in the country unaccompanied. The program grew quickly in 2014, when around 70,000 children crossed the southern border alone.

 

Now this web of private facilities, cobbled together to support children with nowhere else to go, is beginning to hold a new population: the more than 2,000 children who arrived with their parents but were separated from them because of a Trump administration policy.

 

In Texas, where the resettlement agency awarded the majority of the grants, state inspectors have cited homes with more than 400 deficiencies, about one-third of them serious.

Allegations included staff members’ failure to seek medical attention for children. One had a burn, another a broken wrist, a third a sexually transmitted disease. In another shelter, staff gave a child medicine to which she was allergic, despite a warning on her medical bracelet. Inspectors also cited homes for “inappropriate contact” between children and staff....

 

A case in point is the Shiloh Treatment Center, a mobile home complex-turned-child care center. Located in rural Manvel, Texas, the center was founded in 1995 by Clay Dean Hill, who is now 69. In 2013, the resettlement agency began funding the shelter, sending more than $25 million in grants over five years.

In 2001, Stephanie Duffield, 16, died after being restrained by staff. Following her death, Shiloh was found to be “in compliance” with state requirements, according to the refugee resettlement office. Since then, Shiloh has been dogged by allegations of child abuse, leading Brazoria County’s district attorney, Jeri Yenne, to call for increased monitoring of the shelter.

 

Children have died at two other programs affiliated with Hill, Behavior Training Research Inc. and Daystar Residential Inc. Between 1993 and 2010, three children died after being restrained at those facilities. In 2002, Latasha Bush, 15, died from asphyxia. Eight years later, Michael Keith Owens, 16, died after being restrained inside a closet. Both were ruled homicides.

Daystar closed after Owens’ death. Behavior Training Research remains registered as an active domestic for-profit corporation.

 

Over the last three years, Texas inspectors found eight deficiencies at Shiloh, including poorly supervised medication inside the facility and overdue background check renewals for staff....

911 call in child abuse case: Girl reports parents, says sisters are ‘chained up’

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — A 17-year-old girl who had just escaped her home of horrors called police dispatchers and revealed in a high-pitched voice the abuse that had gone on for years.

 

“My two little sisters right now are chained up,” she said in a recording played Wednesday during a hearing to determine if her mother and father stand trial for a raft of abuse charges.

“They will wake up at night and they will start crying and they wanted me to call somebody,” she said of her siblings. “I wanted to call y’all so y’all can help my sisters.”

 

The girl’s mother, Louise Turpin, dabbed her eyes with a tissue as the 911 call was played in Riverside County Superior Court.

David and Louise Turpin have pleaded not guilty to torture, child abuse and other charges. They are being held on $12 million bail each.

 

The 911 call in January was the start of a new day for their 13 children, some of whom didn’t even understand the role of police officers when they showed up at the house in response to the call.

 

Officers freed two children who were shackled to beds and arrested the parents in a case that drew worldwide attention to severe neglect at the Perris, California, home that looked neatly kept from the outside.

Inside, police discovered something completely different.

 

The house reeked of human waste, and the evidence of starvation was obvious, with the oldest of 13 siblings weighing just 82 pounds. The children were locked up as punishment, denied food and toys and allowed to do little except write in journals, prosecutors said.

 

Children were isolated from each other and locked in different rooms in small groups. They did not have access to televisions or radios but expressed themselves in the hundreds of journals that investigators seized from the home where they were schooled.

 

After they were freed, the children, who ranged in age from 2 to 29, were immediately hospitalized and eventually released....

....Before he found fame, Petty married his longtime friend Jane Benyo in 1974. The duo’s 22-year marriage was filled with drama that stemmed from mental illness, drug use and the singer’s booming career.

Five years before they divorced, Petty told Rolling Stone he was still “very much in love” with Benyo. “There were times when we definitely were not getting along, when we fought like f—ing Apaches, you know. I’m lucky they still let me live in this neighborhood,” he told the outlet.
However, the couple could not work through their issues and split for good in 1996. “I was used to living in hell. My parents’ marriage was hell. I lived through being terribly abused as a kid, and then I found myself in an abusive marriage,” he recalled to Zanes.

HIS DESCENT INTO HEROIN ADDICTION

After Petty and Benyo divorced, the star reconnected with his future wife Dana York, whom he had met years earlier at a concert.

Though the couple fell in love, Petty was struggling with a secret heroin addiction....

....I am going to tell you my story of direct colonization from being a child of the Sixties Scoop. I will give you detailed information about my history to let you know how far I have come in my life's journey. I warn you, though, my story is graphic and extremely painful to read.

....We were a small community with aunties, uncles, cousins, and grandparents that all looked out for each other. When I was one, Children's Aid Society came to Jones Road and took all the children away as part of the sixties sweep.

Six homes in six years

My sister, brother and I were sent to Winnipeg. We lived in several different foster homes around Winnipeg for six years. When I was four, we were sent to live with a pastor and his wife. They had 12 foster kids and five biological teenagers. As soon as we arrived, I was sexually abused by their sons....

Abuse continues

We moved to two different American cities as the adopted family was transferred to different churches. Their sons continued the sexual and physical abuse right where they left off when I was four. We also experienced ritual abuse in the name of the Lord from the parents. They showed us graphic pictures and movies of the devil and where my soul would go if I wasn't saved.....

When she left (her sister), the abuse escalated. My brother and I were taken to the basement of the home and raped in front of each other by the sons daily, or whenever they got a chance. This sexual and physical abuse went on for the next two years.

While the parents themselves did not sexually abuse us, the mother hurt us physically....

To stop the abuse, I cut my legs. I have 43 scars on my legs that saved me from the sexual abuse. I put the blood from my wounds in my undergarments to protect myself, saying I was on my period and not available to be abused....

My brother and sister were both diagnosed with schizophrenia. I was the only one not diagnosed with this illness. My siblings and I had to search for each other. We were reunited, but there was no happy ending. We each carry our own scars and nightmares that will never go away....

I am currently in my third year of working towards my bachelor's degree in urban and inner-city studies at the University of Winnipeg....

I hope my story provides others with an understanding of how the Sixties Scoop has affected many of us Indigenous survivors. We all have our own healing process and life journey ahead of us.....

....allegations have been made about abuse of prisoners and civilians from the outset of the Iraq war in 2003. Three colonels in the divisional headquarters complained about mistreatment of prisoners within the first four weeks. In two public inquiries (into the deaths of Baha Mousa and Hamid al-Sweady), it was revealed that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) – the most respected body in the world in matters of international humanitarian law – had complained about prisoner abuse.

....The Baha Mousa inquiry heard that his military interrogators were using the so called “five techniques”, banned in 1978, which violate the Geneva conventions; the interrogators said they “answered to London” (the MoD) and not the chain of command. If this is correct then the MoD is at fault: the five techniques now amount to torture.

Many of the allegations concern physical, sexual and religious abuse during interrogation. The conduct appears systematic, and the MoD has video recordings. It could easily verify any claim and now needs to come clean: I cannot believe that any defence chief would wish to defend physical, sexual or religious humiliation in interrogation.

Finally, it has been well documented that there were secret detention facilities in the UK area of operations which appear to have bypassed prisoner of war facilities. If this is correct, it is in violation of the Geneva conventions and, if the prisoners were spirited out of the country, then that could amount to a grave breach.

Theresa May defends child abuse inquiry as lawyer resigns

Theresa May has insisted the inquiry into child sexual abuse in England and Wales will not be scaled back despite recent setbacks.
The prime minister said she and Home Secretary Amber Rudd still had confidence in the inquiry.
She spoke after the lead counsel to the hearings, Ben Emmerson, was suspended on Wednesday and the inquiry's second most senior lawyer resigned.
Elizabeth Prochaska's resignation is said to be not linked to recent events....

On Wednesday the inquiry said it had "recently become very concerned about aspects of Ben Emmerson QC's leadership" of his team and he had been suspended so these could be properly investigated.

The BBC understands more than one complaint has been made against him.
Preliminary hearings for the inquiry began in March at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.
But Prof Alexis Jay, the current chairwoman, is the fourth person to have been appointed to lead the inquiry, following three earlier resignations....

The inquiry was set up to examine whether public bodies including the police have failed in their duty to protect children from sexual abuse. It will also examine claims of abuse involving "well-known people".
