Jeffrey Sandusky, son of Jerry Sandusky, pleads guilty in child sex abuse case
September 15, 2017
Jeffrey Sandusky, son of Jerry Sandusky, pleaded guilty to child sex abuse charges on Friday, exactly one week before his trial was set to begin.
Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller announced Friday night that Sandusky, 41, of State College, had pleaded guilty to "all charges," which includes 12 felonies.
Jeff Sandusky is one of the notorious former Penn State football assistant's adopted children.
He was accused of soliciting two girls, ages 15 and 16, for oral sex and nude photos.
When the older teen refused to send Sandusky the photographs he demanded, Parks Miller said, he became more insistent, badgering her to comply over a two day period. Sandusky sought pictures of her "pissing", dressing, naked body parts and nudes. Sandusky instructed the victim in follow-up texts to delete the messages and to not tell anyone, Parks Miller said.
Sandusky's requests were rebuffed by both underage girls, who instead reported the alleged conduct to their parents, state police at Rockview said.

Reimer: Red Sox child sexual abuse scandal another disgraceful portion of Tom Yawkey's legacy
Alex Reimer August 21, 2017
Former Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey’s record of virulent racism has been recounted numerous times in the debate to rename Yawkey Way. But another disgraceful portion of his ownership tenure often goes unmentioned.
Eight years before longtime Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky faced child sexual abuse charges, the Red Sox settled a longstanding child molestation case of their own. John Henry, who purchased the team in late 2001, paid $3.15 million to seven men who say former clubhouse attendant Don Fitzpatrick sexually abused them during his more than 20-year tenure with the club. A victim came forward to the team in 1971, but Fitzpatrick remained with Red Sox until 1991, when a man showed up at a nationally televised game in Anaheim and held up a sign that read, “Don Fitzpatrick sexually assaulted me.” The Red Sox paid out an $100,000 settlement and Fitzpatrick left the club four days later.
There are now 20 alleged victims, most of whom tell a similar story: Fitzpatrick, who presided over the visitor’s clubhouse, lured them in with promises of employment and access. The men who successfully sued the Red Sox for Fitzpatrick’s misconduct, dubbed the “Winter Haven Seven,” were lured in at the team’s former Spring Training headquarters in Winter Haven, Fla. Fitzpatrick pleaded guilty in 2002 to four counts of attempted sexual battery against boys younger than 12 between 1975 and 1989 in the central Florida city. He died in 2005 without serving any time.
As Yahoo’s Jeff Passan details in an extensive story about the scandal, Fitzpatrick was a favorite of Tom and Jean Yawkey. The couple operated a home for disadvantaged boys in South Carolina, and often took wayward youths under their wing. Tom Yawkey took a particular liking to Fitzpatrick, an orphan who played pepper with batboys outside Fenway Park prior to Red Sox home games.
Two sources told Passan that Yawkey “protected” Fitzpatrick when his “tendencies to gravitate towards young boys became apparent.” Red Sox players reportedly instructed young boys, especially African-Americans, to stay away from Fitzpatrick. Passan reports that one player saw Fitzpatrick sodomizing a young boy in the team shower and alerted the team, but Fitzpatrick kept his job (much like how ex-Penn State coach Mike McQueary says he caught Sandusky molesting a boy in the locker room shower).
It’s uncertain how much the Yawkeys knew about Fitzpatrick’s monstrous behavior. But if players were aware of it, then it’s fair to assume the rumors had percolated up to the owner’s box. Fitzpatrick’s swift removal after the 1991 incident, and the Red Sox’ willingness to settle, also indicates they had knowledge of their beloved clubhouse attendant’s sick tendencies.
Yawkey’s 44-year tenure as owner, which lasted from 1933 until 1976, was a low-point in franchise history. The Red Sox were basement dwellers for the majority of those years, largely due to his refusal to integrate.

Huge rise in UK child neglect prompts call for urgent action
Reports of problems rise 60% in five years with nearly nine in 10 serious enough to refer to social services or police
The NSPCC received 19,448 reports of child neglect in 2016-17, up 61% on the previous year.
Tuesday 22 August 2017
Reports of child neglect in the UK have risen by more than 60% in the last five years with nearly nine in 10 calls proving serious enough to be referred to social services or the police.
Nearly 19,500 calls reporting child neglect were dealt with by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in the last 12 months. The charity said a growing number of callers were concerned about children, some under the age of five, being left at home unsupervised by parents struggling with alcohol and drug use.

Fran’s Day Care - Keller Case Updates
August 22, 2017 case update:
Dan and Fran Keller…will receive $3.4 million from a state fund for those wrongly convicted of crimes.
The couple’s circumstances changed in June, when Travis County District Attorney Margaret Moore filed court documents that dropped all charges and declared the Kellers “actually innocent” under the law. After an extensive review, it was clear that the Kellers’ innocence claim should be supported in the interest of justice, Moore said at the time.
Now adults, several of the children who accused the Kellers opposed the move, according to Moore and family members. (Quotes from Austin-American Statesman article)
Here are a few facts about the Fran’s Day Care case:
1. Children’s parents were alerted when children returned home from daycare wearing their under clothing inside out or wearing other children’s underwear and sometimes having wet hair.
2. The children who were old enough to speak reported sexual assaults by Dan Keller and other visitors to the school. The older children also reported assaults on younger, pre-verbal children at the school.
3. The Kellers attempted to evade arrest by fleeing to Las Vegas. They were captured there wearing disguises. Fran has bleached her hair blond.
4. A co-defendant, Doug Perry, a sheriff’s deputy, pled guilty, turned state’s evidence, testified against the Kellers, and received a 10-year probated sentence.
5. The defense did not retain an expert witness in defense of the Kellers. They only produced a copy of Richard Gardner’s book, Sex Abuse Hysteria, in response to the allegations against the Kellers.
6. The prosecution did not discuss ritual abuse until the subject was raised by the defense at which point the prosecution’s expert witness, Randy Noblitt, explained what ritual abuse is and how it works. He also provided testimony in response to the production of the Richard Gardner book intended by the defense to demonstrate in unreliability of sex abuse claims by children. (The book’s theme is that all people are latent pedophiles and that parents receive vicarious sexual gratification from their children’s sexual experiences).

'Evil allowed to run wild' Ex-Penn State president guilty in Sandusky case
'Evil allowed to run wild' Ex-Penn State president guilty in Sandusky case
Depicted by prosecutors as a bureaucrat whose inaction allowed "evil" to run wild on innocent children, the former president of Penn State University was convicted Friday of keeping a lid on the scandal surrounding notorious child-abusing coach Jerry Sandusky.
A jury in Harrisburg, Pa. deliberated 13 hours before finding Graham Spanier guilty of one count of child endangerment. The charge stemmed from Spanier's handling of a complaint against Sandusky, a once-popular assistant football coach whose career at Penn State spanned three decades. Spanier was found not guilty of conspiracy and a second child endangerment count....
The trial centered on how Spanier and two other university leaders handled a complaint by a graduate assistant who said he reported seeing Sandusky sexually molesting a boy in a team shower in 2001. The administrators told Sandusky he could not bring children on to the campus any longer, but they did not report the matter to police or child welfare authorities.
Sandusky was not arrested until 2011 after an anonymous tip led prosecutors to investigate the shower incident. He was convicted the next year of sexually abusing 10 boys and is serving a decades-long prison sentence.
Four of the eight young men testifying at Sandusky’s trial said the abuse occurred after 2001.

Teen says she was forced to have sex with 1,000 men over 2 years, 2 Former Penn State Administrators Plead Guilty To Roles In Abuse Scandal
Teen says she was forced to have sex with 1,000 men over 2 years
Mar 12, 2017
PHILADELPHIA -- Lawyers in Pennsylvania say their client was sexually exploited at a motel for years, alleging the teen girl was a victim of human trafficking who was forced to have sex with more than 1,000 men.
"This child was forced into sex slavery, paid to do things with men double, triple, quadruple her age," attorney Nadeem Bezar told reporters.
The teen's lawyers are using Pennsylvania's human trafficking law to sue the motel where they say their client was sexually exploited, marking the first civil suit under the law since it was enacted in 2014, CBS Philadelphia reports.
Lawyers allege employees at the Roosevelt Inn in northeast Philadelphia knew that a 14-year-old girl was being held against her will for two years. She was forced to have sex with more than 1,000 men for as little as $50, they said.
"She is devastated by what happened to her. She's just trying to piece her life back together," said Bezar.
The girl, now 17, wants the hotel to pay for what happened to her. Under the 2014 human trafficking law, she's suing the motel's owners, the motel's management company and the manager himself. The lawsuit demands $50,000 in damages, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
According to the Inquirer, the girl managed to escape and reconnect with her family after two years at the motel. The Inquirer notes that those responsible for trafficking the teen were convicted and sentenced to prison. Her attorneys reportedly declined to identify her captors, fearing retaliation.

2 Former Penn State Administrators Plead Guilty To Roles In Abuse Scandal March 13, 2017 Colin Dwyer
Two former high-level Penn State administrators pleaded guilty Monday to misdemeanor charges of child endangerment, for their roles in covering up child sex abuse by disgraced assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.
Former Vice President Gary Schultz and former Athletic Director Tim Curley each took a plea bargain that — if accepted by the judge — will carry a penalty of up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. As part of the plea bargain, the felony charges they originally faced were reduced to misdemeanors.
As Penn Live notes, the pleas also open the possibility they may testify against former university President Graham Spanier, the only remaining defendant in the case. Jury selection begins next week for Spanier, who has been charged with a conspiracy felony and a child endangerment misdemeanor.
The charges against all three men pertain to how they handled the multiple allegations of sexual abuse against Sandusky, who in 2012 was convicted of sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year span. "Prosecutors said Spanier, Curley and Schultz knew of complaints involving Sandusky showering with boys in 1998 and 2001," The Associated Press reported in 2012....
"This was not a mistake by these men, this was not an oversight," then-Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly said in 2012, as we noted at the time. "It was not misjudgment on their part. This was a conspiracy of silence by top officials to actively conceal the truth."....

Ex-Penn State coach Sandusky's son accused of child abuse
The adopted son of Jerry Sandusky, the US college football coach convicted of child abuse, has been accused of sexually abusing two teenage sisters.
Jeffrey Sandusky, 41, allegedly sent explicit text messages to children, asking for nude photographs.
The arrest comes nearly five years after his father, who worked for Pennsylvania State University, was found guilty on similar charges.
The elder Sandusky is serving a lengthy prison sentence for molesting 10 boys.
The son - who attended many of his father's court proceedings - faces 14 counts, including statutory sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor, sexual abuse of a minor and photographing or depicting sexual acts....

Is Trump A Fascist? 10 Quotes From The President On Nationalism, Militarism And Violence
By Cristina Silva 02/06/17
Donald Trump is a fascist, to hear many of his critics tell it. But what exactly does that mean?
An image from the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., warning about the early signs of fascism went viral recently after Trump's opponents linked the bullet points detailed in the exhibit to his administration. The warning signs included “disdain for human rights” and “powerful and continuing nationalism.”
Fascism has also become a trending search in recent months for the Merriam Webster Dictionary website, which defines the term as a “political philosophy, movement, or regime… that exalts nation and often race above the individual.” It states that fascism silences opposition and involves “severe economic and social regimentation."
The Washington Post took a look at Trump's campaign pledges in October and compared them to fascist traits such as hyper-nationalism, militarism, glorification of violence, a desire to purge the disloyal and theatricality, among other things. It concluded that Trump was an “amateurish imitation of the real thing.”
Since taking office in January, Trump has vowed to put "America first" and banned refugees and people from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the United States. He has told his opponents at the State Department and Department of Justice to get with his program or move out. And he has promised to overhaul the nation's trade deals and economy.
Below are 10 quotes from Trump that critics claim show that his administration might be embracing the nationalistic, militaristic and violent rhetoric of extreme right-wing fascist regimes built around a leadership cult.

Jury hands ex-Penn State assistant $7M in defamation case
Oct 27, 2016 By TRAVIS JOHNSON Associated Press
BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) - A jury awarded a former Penn State assistant football coach $7.3 million in damages Thursday, finding the university defamed him after it became public that his testimony helped prosecutors charge Jerry Sandusky with child molestation.
Jurors deliberated for about four hours in Mike McQueary's defamation and misrepresentation lawsuit.
Judge Thomas Gavin still must decide McQueary's whistleblower claim that he was treated unfairly as the school suspended him from coaching duties, placed him on paid administrative leave, barred him from team facilities and then did not renew his contract shortly after he testified at Sandusky's 2012 trial.
McQueary remained stoic as the verdict was read, and he and his lawyers made no comment as they left the courthouse.
A Penn State spokesman said the university would not comment on the case and the jury's verdict until a final decision is rendered on all counts.
McQueary had been seeking more than $4 million in lost wages and other damages, saying he was defamed by a statement the school president released the day Sandusky was charged, retaliated against for helping with the Sandusky investigation and misled by school administrators.
Jurors awarded him $1.15 million on the defamation claim and $1.15 million on the misrepresentation allegation that two administrators lied to him when they said they took his report of Sandusky seriously and would respond appropriately. They also awarded $5 million in punitive damages.

Parole denied for convicted Manson follower Charles 'Tex' Watson
by Matt Hamilton October 27, 2016
A California review board denied parole Thursday to Charles “Tex” Watson, the self-described right-hand man of Charles Manson and a key figure in the Manson family’s 1969 killing spree in the Los Angeles area.
Watson, 70, was initially sentenced to die in San Quentin’s gas chamber for his part in the murder of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six others. In 1973, his sentence was commuted to life in prison after the state Supreme Court ruled that the death penalty was unconstitutional....
Watson was convicted of joining other Manson followers in the Aug. 9, 1969, massacre of five people including Tate, who was married to director Roman Polanski....
Prosecutors said Manson and his followers — based out of the Spahn Ranch commune in Chatsworth — were trying to incite a race war that the cult leader believed was foretold in the Beatles' song "Helter Skelter."
At Watson’s most recent parole hearing in 2011, Deputy Dist. Atty. Patrick Sequeira called Watson the leader of the rampage at Polanski’s home; he had announced to the victims: “I am the devil. I am here to do the devil’s business.”
“His role within the family was a significant one,” Sequeira said. “He was essentially the main hit man…. These weren’t impulsive actions. Murdering seven people on two subsequent nights were not impulsive actions.”....

Inside the sick world of paedophile Grant Davies’ and his creepy interests
October 28, 2016....
Grant Davies, incarcerated in Silverwater remand centre as a prison committee decides which correctional facility he will spend the next 18 years, took thousands of photographs of his students.
Insisting on girls as young as seven be dressed in skimpy and clingy outfits and painted with showgirl style make-up, Davies adopted the guise of cheeky prankster....
Evidence was given during his trial that the girls’ mother sent Davies sexually explicit photos of her daughters to advance their careers.
Jailed in 2014 for doing so, the mother later said that Davies ran the business “like a cult” and promised her daughters they would be “stars”....
One of Davies’ former dance students, now in her 20s, has since revealed children as young as three had to wear crop tops and shorts which barely covered their private parts.
Girls were banned from wearing bras, and students were told to wear a G-string or no underwear at all.
But only some of the girls knew the truth behind their teacher’s jovial exteriors, the man who behind closed doors touched their genital and breast areas, or in one case engaged in anal penetration.
One of the sisters who featured in photographs and videos in Davies child pornography collection later told the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse that she thought Davies would make her a star.
“I didn’t want to do the videos and photos but I thought that was the only way I would become a professional dancer,” she said....
Opened in 2002, by at least January 2003 the studio became a place of hope and misery for children desperate to be dance stars to the point they were subjected to molestation under threat....
He sexually assaulted them at RG Dance’s Chiswick studio, at his home and at various locations around Sydney and the state where he conducted private dance classes.
Davies was so trusted by one girls’ family, he would come to dinner, even though he was regularly abusing her.
In 2007, police seized Davies’ computer following a complaint that had sent very young girls sexually explicit text messages about masturbation and told them of his sexual fantasies.
But the investigation was dropped....
In May 2013, a friend of Davies’ sister alerted Davies’ schoolteacher wife to the fact he had child pornography on his laptop....
Dance teachers and mother complained that they “all knew” about Davies, but previous attempts to have him arrested had failed.
In sentencing Davies to a maximum 24 years’ prison, with an 18 year minimum, Justice Jennie Girdham said he used a “pattern of conduct and groomed the children for sexual exploitation”.
“He constantly found new victims,” she said.
Grant Davies’ next 18 years will predominantly be in his “jail of sentence”, beginning in maximum security....

Joe Paterno was told Jerry Sandusky abused a 14-year-old boy in 1976, according to testimony in newly unsealed documents

Court documents say famed Penn State coach Joe Paterno was aware as far back as 1976 that his top assistant was abusing boys, and years later other coaches knew, too, including future Rutgers and NFL coach Greg Schiano.
In testimony about the shameful Jerry Sandusky scandal, a graduate assistant said Schiano and another up-and-coming coach, Tom Bradley, kept silent about Sandusky’s crimes.
The testimony came in 2015 from ex-Penn State assistant Mike McQueary, who was a key witness in the Sandusky criminal case because he reported to Paterno seeing Sandusky rape a boy in 2001.
In his testimony, McQueary said he "briefly" discussed with Bradley what he had seen. Bradley, who is currently UCLA's defensive coordinator, was a Joe Paterno assistant from 1979 to 2011 and replaced Sandusky as Penn State's defensive coordinator. Bradley was Penn State's interim head coach after Paterno was fired....
In 1976, a 14-year-old victim told Paterno that Sandusky touched him while attending a football camp at the university, penetrating his rectum with his finger as he showered, according to the Washington Post.
John Doe 150, according to the newly unsealed court documents, testified that he told Paterno of the sexual assault and the coach ignored his complaint.
“Is it accurate that Coach Paterno quickly said to you, ‘I don’t want to hear about any of that kind of stuff, I have a football season to worry about?'” the victim's lawyer asked him in 2014.
“Specifically. Yes … I was shocked, disappointed, offended," the man replied. "I was insulted … I said, is that all you’re going to do? You’re not going to do anything else?....

New court documents suggest others at Penn State knew of Jerry Sandusky abuse
A man testified in court in 2014 that Penn State football coach Joe Paterno ignored his complaints of a sexual assault committed by assistant coach Jerry Sandusky in 1976 when the man was a 14-year-old boy, according to newly unsealed court documents.
By Will Hobson and Cindy Boren July 12, 2016
In 2014, a man testified that Penn State football coach Joe Paterno ignored his complaints of a sexual assault committed by assistant coach Jerry Sandusky in 1976 when the man was a 14-year-old boy, according to new court documents unsealed Tuesday in a Philadelphia court.
Four other former assistant football coaches at the school also were aware of Sandusky acting inappropriately with boys before law enforcement was first notified in 1998, according to testimony contained in the documents.
The allegations suggest that Paterno may have been made aware of Sandusky’s actions far earlier than has previously been reported, and that knowledge of Sandusky’s behavior may have been far more widespread among the Penn State football staff than previously known.
Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano and UCLA defensive coordinator Tom Bradley, both former Penn State assistants named in the documents, denied the allegations Tuesday.
The testimony of multiple victims who have settled with Penn State, and of former assistant Mike McQueary — who witnessed Sandusky raping a boy on campus in 2001 — comes as the specifics of what Paterno and others knew about Sandusky and when are still being debated in courts and in the court of public opinion in Pennsylvania....
The 1976 victim, identified in court records as John Doe 150, said that while he was attending a football camp at Penn State, Sandusky touched him as he showered. Sandusky’s finger penetrated the boy’s rectum, Doe said, and the boy asked to speak with Paterno about it. Doe testified that he specifically told Paterno that Sandusky had sexually assaulted him, and Paterno ignored it....
While law enforcement only first became aware of allegations against Sandusky in 1998, the documents released Tuesday include several incidents in the 1980s and 1990s when Penn State football coaches and officials were aware of improper behavior by Sandusky around boys.
In 1987, according to a man identified as John Doe 75, he was a 13-year-old boy when Sandusky brought him to a coaches’ meeting room and put his hand down the boy’s shorts. Assistant coach Joe Sarra walked into the room and saw them, Doe 75 testified. Startled, Sarra immediately left and closed the door behind him, and Sandusky kissed the boy on his forehead, Doe 75 testified....

A second report has surfaced that late Penn State coach Joe Paterno was informed in the 1970s of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky's sexual abuse of children.
In a CNN report released Friday, a man described as a troubled young kid in 1971 said he was raped by Sandusky in a Penn State bathroom. Then, he told CNN, Paterno ignored his complaint about it.
Also Friday, NBC Sports reported that “as many as six” Penn State assistant coaches witnessed abusive acts by Sandusky, dating to the 1970s.
The latest allegations come one day after PennLive reported that Paterno was allegedly told in 1976 about an accusation of child sexual abuse by Sandusky.
The PennLive report cites a court order connected to an insurance coverage case involving Penn State. The order includes a line that one of the school’s insurers has claimed “in 1976, a child allegedly reported to PSU’s Head Coach Joseph Paterno that he (the child) was sexually molested by Sandusky.” The filing also cites incidents of other assistant football coaches witnessing “inappropriate contact between Sandusky and unidentified children.”
Sandusky was convicted of 45 counts of child sex abuse in June 2012, five months after Paterno’s death, and is serving 30 to 60 years in prison. Lawyers for Sandusky, 72, have been in court this week attempting to overturn his conviction.
In CNN's report Friday, the accuser — who was 15 at the time of the alleged attack in 1971 — said he has never before spoken publicly about the abuse but that he did confide in a friend in the 1970s. That friend verified the story, CNN says....

Sandusky victim: Joe Paterno told me to drop abuse accusation
By Sara Ganim, CNN Sun May 8, 2016
After four years of feuding over the legacy of Joe Paterno, with a few vague details about what he may have known about allegations of sexual abuse by one of his coaches, it is becoming clear there may be much more.
There are now two allegations by men who say they were sexually abused by Jerry Sandusky, who also say they reported their abuse to the legendary coach in the 1970s.
One of those allegations was made public in a court order related to a lawsuit Penn State University filed against its former insurer over who should have to pay settlements to the more than 30 men who have come forward as victims of Sandusky. The victim was not identified, and the details come from a deposition that is sealed.
The other has spoken to CNN, in great detail, explaining how he was a troubled young kid in 1971 when he was raped in a Penn State bathroom by Jerry Sandusky. Then, he says, his complaint about it was ignored by Paterno....

Penn State settlements covered 1971 Sandusky abuse claim
The Associated Press May 9, 2016
Penn State’s legal settlements with Jerry Sandusky’s accusers cover alleged abuse dating to 1971, which was 40 years before his arrest, the university said Sunday, providing the first confirmation of the time frame of abuse claims that have led to big payouts.
The disclosure came as Penn State President Eric Barron decried newly revealed allegations that former football coach Joe Paterno was told in 1976 that Sandusky had sexually abused a child and that two assistant coaches witnessed either inappropriate or sexual contact in the late 1980s. Paterno, who died in 2012, had said the first time he had received a complaint against Sandusky was in 2001.
Barron said the accusations were unsubstantiated, and suggested that the university is being subjected unfairly to what he called rumor and innuendo.
Responding to questions about the president’s statement and claims against the school, university spokesman Lawrence Lokman told The Associated Press he could confirm that the earliest year of alleged abuse covered in Penn State’s settlements is 1971.
Sandusky graduated from Penn State in 1965 and returned as a full-time defensive coach in 1969.
The university has paid out more than $90 million to settle more than 30 civil claims involving Sandusky, now 72 and serving a lengthy prison sentence for the sexual abuse of 10 children. But few details have been provided on the payouts by either the school or lawyers for those who said they were Sandusky’s victims even before the period covered by the criminal investigation.
The allegations about Paterno and the assistant coaches were cited in a ruling last week by Philadelphia Judge Gary Glazer in litigation between an insurance company and Penn State over how much of the settlement costs the school must bear.
The insurers cited an allegation that a boy had told the longtime Penn State football coach in 1976 that he had been molested by Sandusky. The court document also cited statements, from those claiming they had been Sandusky’s victims, that two unidentified assistant coaches had said they witnessed inappropriate contact between Sandusky and children in the late 1980s....

Penn State has paid more than $92M as a result of Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal: report
BY Andy Clayton NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Thursday, November 26, 2015
The Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal has already cost Penn State University more than $92 million.
The shocking dollar figure - up from the original $60 million - was made public at the same time it was revealed Penn State could still face claims from six or more alleged victims, NBC News is reporting.
Sandusky, 71, is spending 30 to 60 years behind bars after he was found guilty in October 2012 of abusing 10 boys over the course of 15 years. The long-time defensive coordinator for legendary Nittany Lions football coach Joe Paterno used his "Second Mile" charity for troubled kids to find and identify his victims. Many of the assaults took place at Penn State athletic department facilities.
The convicted pedophile claims he is innocent of all charges and is seeking a new trial. He admitted to showering with boys, but said he never molested them.... http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/college/penn-state-paid-92m-result-jerry-sandusky-scandal-article-1.2447621
At Worcester hearing, depositions in Bill Cosby defamation case ordered next August
By Brad Petrishen Telegram & Gazette Staff Nov. 30, 2015
WORCESTER – A federal magistrate judge Monday signaled opposition to efforts by lawyers for Bill Cosby to shield court documents in his defamation case from public view and, contrary to several defense requests, ordered depositions to be completed by next summer.
“It was a good day,” said Joseph Cammarata, the Washington, D.C., lawyer for a recently expanded contingent of women who allege the famous comedian defamed them by denying their accusations of sexual assault.
Four women added their names to the lawsuit earlier in November, making a total of seven women from five states. The assaults allegedly occurred between 1969 and 1990, with Mr. Cosby allegedly making the defamatory statements to the media between 2005 and 2014.
Mr. Cosby – who has been accused of drugging and raping dozens of women over several decades – has not been charged with a crime. As most of the allegations have emerged within the past year, they fall outside the statute of limitations for criminal conduct.... http://www.telegram.com/article/20151130/NEWS/151139944

Paterno's 111 vacated Penn State wins restored in Sandusky suit deal, where do Jerry Sandusky's victims go to get their innocence back
Paterno's 111 vacated Penn State wins restored in Sandusky suit deal AP JAN 16, 2015
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The NCAA agreed Friday to restore 112 football wins it had stripped from Penn State — all but one of which belonged to Joe Paterno — in the Jerry Sandusky child-molestation scandal and to reinstate the venerated late coach as the winningest in major college football history.
The agreement, swiftly approved by the boards of the NCAA and the university after intermittent talks heated up this week, lifts the last of the sanctions imposed in 2012 and wipes away the black marks that had tainted one of the nation's most celebrated college athletics programs.
After more than two years of criticism that the NCAA had overstepped its authority, officials with college sports' governing body did not back down. Instead, they said they were focused on ending litigation that had held up distribution of the university's $60 million fine to fund child abuse-prevention programs.
Before the deal, the NCAA had agreed last year to eliminate some of the sanctions, including reinstating Penn State's full complement of scholarships and letting the team participate in post-season play.
Friday's agreement threw out the rest of the sanctions, including eliminating a five-year probation period and scholarship and transfer rules, and restoring the wins that had been wiped out. It also bowed to Pennsylvania officials' desire to see the $60 million fine spent in Pennsylvania, not spread to abuse-prevention programs around the nation....
Freeh's report accused Paterno and other top Penn State officials of burying child sex-abuse allegations against Sandusky to avoid bad publicity. The report portrayed the Hall of Fame coach as more deeply involved in the scandal than previously thought.
The alleged cover-up by Paterno, then-university President Graham Spanier and two other Penn State administrators allowed Sandusky to prey on other boys for years, it said.
Paterno was never charged with a crime, although Spanier and the two other former administrators continue to fight charges in court....

By Richard Spillett 5 December 2014
A DJ friend of Jimmy Savile has been convicted of a catalogue of historical sex offences against 'star-struck' girls as young as 13.
Ex-Radio Caroline DJ Ray Teret, 73, used his celebrity status in the Manchester club scene in the 1960s and 1970s to prey on many of his victims.
Teret - known as 'Ugli Ray' - was mentored by Savile in the early days of his career and was described as following him around 'like a shadow', Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court heard.
Teret, of Altrincham, Greater Manchester, told the jury he had no interest in underage girls, despite a previous conviction for sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old girl in 1999, an offence he continues to deny.
He denied 18 rapes, two other serious sexual assaults, one attempted rape, 12 indecent assaults and one count of indecency with a child.
After more 60 hours of deliberations, he was convicted of seven rapes and 11 indecent assaults. He was cleared of the other charges....

Does reality TV have a pedophile problem?
By Hollie McKay October 27, 2014
LOS ANGELES – TLC canceled ”Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” on Friday after photos surfaced of star Mama June hanging out with a convicted child molester.
In August, “Sons of Guns” star Will Hayden was arrested on multiple rape charges against minors. His daughter, another star on the show, then told “Dr. Phil” that she too had been touched inappropriately. Discovery, which owns TLC, swiftly canceled that show, too.
In 2013, reality TV producer Donald Luciano – who worked on some episodes of OWN’s reality program “Beverly’s Full House” about the life of former supermodel Beverly Johnson – pled guilty to possession of images of a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct....

Mama June's history of dating sex offenders: Father of Honey Boo Boo's sister Chubbs served time for sexually exploiting a child over the internet
Child molester Mark McDaniel isn't the first sex offender that June Shannon has dated
The father of Jessica 'Chubbs' Shannon served over two years in prison for the sexual exploitation of a child over the internet in 2005
Michael Anthony Ford, 37, remains on the sex offender registry and is currently behind bars on a separate charge of child abandonment
McDaniel has reportedly got back together with Mama June and has been photographed with her and her daughter, nine-year-old Honey Boo Boo
By David Mccormack and Lydia Warren for MailOnline 28 October 2014
....According to prison records, Ford is currently behind bars on a separate child abandonment charge.
The fathers of Shannon’s other children also have criminal records but rather than being sex-related their crimes included arson and burglary.
Alana’s father, David Michael ‘Sugar Bear’ Thompson, was sentenced to five years in 1998 for robbing a series of campsites and setting fire to another.
Anna’s father, David Dunn, did time in 1995 for stealing a handgun and again in 1998 for stealing a carton of cigarettes. The father of Laury is said to be unknown, even by Mama June.
A police report has revealed the sickening sexual assaults Mama June's eldest daughter allegedly suffered at the hands of her boyfriend when she was just eight.
The March 2003 report, seen by RadarOnline, reveals how Anna 'Chickadee' Shannon told authorities in Spalding County, Georgia that she had done the 'S word' with Mark McDaniel.
She also told police that her mother's boyfriend touched her inappropriately, made her touch him inappropriately and forced her to perform a sex act on him. When she told him to stop, he would not.
Anna, who appeared on 'Here Comes Honey Boo Boo' with her mother and siblings, has since revealed that when she first told her mother about the abuse, Mama June refused to believe her.
McDaniel was sentenced to 10 years behind bars after pleading guilty to child molestation. He left prison in March and has reportedly been seeing Mama June again.
The abuse came to light after Anna told her elementary school teacher that her stepfather had assaulted her. She was able to describe the assaults in graphic detail, the report notes.
The molestation was carried out multiple times between April and October 2002, according to the report.
It took Anna months to speak out about the abuse because McDaniel had threatened to kill her if she told, RadarOnline reported.
'Anna stated that Mark told her not to tell because he would not like her anymore,' Beach continued. 'Anna advised she got tired of holding it in and had to tell.'
....Mama June has denied that she is dating the child molester.
'The statement of me dating a sex offender is totally untrue,' she said in a video posted at the weekend. 'I would not ever, ever, ever, ever put my kids in danger.'....

Mama June’s Molester Former Boyfriend Threatened To Kill Daughter Anna If She Spoke Up About Sex Abuse
Posted on Oct 28, 2014
Former Here Comes Honey Boo Boo star Mama June Shannon’s child molester then-boyfriend sexually abused her daughter, Anna Cardwell, for at least six months when she was just 8 years old. But the terrified little girl didn’t come forward until nearly a year later. And now, RadarOnline.com can reveal why. According to court papers obtained by Radar, Mark McDaniel, 53, took extreme, sick measures to prevent his innocent victim from telling anyone about his disgusting behavior in 2002.
In the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office incident report obtained exclusively by Radar, police officer Bauch noted that a very brave Cardwell— now a 20-year-old married mom of Kaitlyn, 2— first told her teacher about the abuse on March 28, 2003.....

Quite the contrary. According to a recent article in Best Practice & Research Clinical Obstetrics and Gynaecology:
Hepenstall-Heger et al. reported lacerations in prepubertal girls in both penile and digital penetration, but none were found in girls experiencing saddle injuries. Myhre et al. found no lacerations in non-abused 5- and 6-year-old girls. (Price, p. 134).
.....Lacerations in children’s genitals are rare, not frequent, and controlled studies conclude that they are not found in non-abused children. Penn St. board votes down new look at 2012 report
By MARK SCOLFORO Associated Press
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State's trustees on Tuesday voted against taking a fresh look at the 2012 university-commissioned report into how the Jerry Sandusky molestation scandal was handled, disappointing many who have criticized the report as deeply flawed and unfairly damaging to the institution.
The board voted 17-9 against a resolution backed by alumni-elected trustees that would have set up a group to comb through the report and seek answers from Louis Freeh, the former FBI director who led the team that produced it.
Many alumni have been critical of the board's handling of the aftermath of the scandal and particularly how the school treated late football coach Joe Paterno, prompting a successful trustee election effort.
"There is no downside, none at all, if we review the report," said Bob Jubelirer, an alumni trustee - and former state senator - who joined the board this year. "This is controversial - it has damaged this university."
The debate demonstrated the deep divide among board members about what to do regarding the report, which concluded Paterno and top administrators concealed key facts about Sandusky's abuse to avoid bad publicity....
Three administrators have been charged with a criminal cover-up of complaints about Sandusky and are awaiting trial in county court in Harrisburg. Former president Graham Spanier, former vice president Gary Schultz and former athletic director Tim Curley have all vigorously denied the allegations and have sought to have their cases thrown out....
Sandusky, the school's retired defensive coach, was convicted in 2012 of sexual abuse of 10 boys and is serving a lengthy state prison sentence.

11 held as child abuse gang smashed
By Press Association 28 October 2014
A suspected child sex abuse gang has been smashed by police officers as part of a crackdown on exploitation of young girls.
Eleven people have been arrested under Operation Heliodor in the south Manchester area, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.
The suspected abusers, a ged between 19 and 38, have been arrested for alleged offences including sexual activity with a child, attempted indecent assault, inciting child prostitution, abduction and rape.
The arrests come at a time of increased scrutiny over the way police forces, including Greater Manchester, deal with child sexual exploitation allegations in the wake of damning reports and claims that widespread abuse of children was effectively ignored by officers for years.
Operation Heliodor is part of Project Phoenix, a multi-agency campaign tackling child sexual exploitation in the Greater Manchester area.
The arrests came after interventions from a multi-agency team into sexual exploitation of girls and its links to organised crime in and around the Longsight area of Manchester, as well as other areas....

Philippine shelter for street kids hit with allegations of abuse
Homeless children say they prefer sleeping rough to beatings at the 'rescue' center
Many homeless children choose to stay on the streets of Manila rather than in government shelters, where rights groups say detainees are subject to abuse and maltreatment
Joe Torres and Eloisa Lopez, Manila Philippines October 28, 2014
....According to the Philippines’ Department of Social Welfare and Development, there were at least 246,000 street children in the country in 2012, including more than 11,000 in Manila alone. Most of them are boys who were abandoned by their families, or who choose to stay in the streets even if they have relatives.
But despite the difficult life, it’s one that boys like Jason prefer to the government alternative: detention in controversial centers for homeless people that rights groups claim are rife with abuse and maltreatment.
For years now, authorities have been rounding up "families at risk," many of them children, in attempts to cleanse urban centers, particularly the capital, of perceived eyesores.
In Manila, the children who are "rescued" during nightly patrols end up in the Reception and Action Center (RAC), a facility that is supposed to provide temporary shelter for the homeless.
"We will run to avoid the night patrol," said Jason....
In March, the Asian Legal Resource Centre asked the UN Human Rights Council during its 25th session in Geneva to take immediate action to address allegations of torture and violence against children in the Philippines....

Everything you missed from Matthew Sandusky’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, UConn to pay $1.3M in sex assault handling lawsuit, Online child abuse reports surge, says US watchdog
Everything you missed from Matthew Sandusky’s interview with Oprah Winfrey By Soraya Nadia McDonald July 18, 2014
....In an interview aired Thursday night on “Oprah Prime” on Winfrey’s OWN network, Matthew told Winfrey he felt it would have been better for his children and wife if he’d kept everything to himself instead of coming forward. Matthew initially offered grand jury testimony that Sandusky was not a child molester, but recanted during trial. After he told police he had also been abused, Matthew said his family, not just him, became the target of vicious character attacks.
“I can handle it,” Matthew said, even though the abuse drove him to attempt suicide shortly after he moved in with the Sanduskys when he was 16. “I can handle people attacking me. I handled the abuse. I can take it. My wife is an innocent. My children — they’re innocent. For people to attack them — yes, absolutely, the simpler answer would have been for me to keep it, to deal with it on my own.”
Matthew said he came forward about the abuse because he didn’t want to be a “coward.” When he heard the testimony of victim No. 4 during Sandusky’s criminal trial, Matthew said he was astonished at how similar the details were.....
More than 30 boys eventually came forward to say Sandusky molested them. To avoid further litigation, Penn State agreed to a $60 million settlement with 26 victims, including Matthew, and the university disbursed payments of varying sizes. Matthew said he had no knowledge of the settlement when he came forward.
Matthew met Jerry and his wife, Dottie Sandusky, when he was seven years old through Sandusky’s Second Mile charity camp. According to The Washington Post’s Joel Achenbach:
Prosecutors say that the Second Mile became a tool for harvesting children for abuse. Sandusky, they said, was a classic predatory pedophile, a man who befriended the most vulnerable boys, the ones needing a father figure, who became appreciative that someone would bring them to football games and make them feel special.
Matthew told Winfrey how he resigned himself to being molested almost as a tradeoff for being around an otherwise stable and loving family. He came from a broken home, he said, where there was physical abuse and even running water wasn’t something that could be taken for granted. He often lived with his grandparents....
Matthew began to act out when he was a young teenager. He tried to cut Sandusky out of his life altogether, but Matthew told Winfrey the coach would come to his biological mother’s home unannounced. He would pull Matthew out of school. There was no escaping him, and Matthew became a truant. He started doing drugs and stealing, and was eventually arrested.
Matthew had a choice: Move in with the Sanduskys, or go to juvenile detention.
The Sanduskys moved him into their home with five other children, all adopted. Matthew so dreaded Sandusky’s nighttime visits he tried to kill himself. He said after that, the sexual abuse largely stopped. The family legally adopted him when he was 18 and pressured him to take the family name so he would be privy to a tuition break thanks to Sandusky’s employment at Penn State....

UConn to pay $1.3M in sex assault handling lawsuit
Jul 18, 2014 By PAT EATON-ROBB Associated Press
STORRS, Conn. (AP) - The University of Connecticut will pay $1.3 million to settle a lawsuit by five women who alleged the school did not take seriously their claims of sexual assaults on campus.
The bulk of the settlement, $900,000, will go to Silvana Moccia, a former UConn ice hockey player who alleged she was kicked off the team after reporting she had been raped by a male hockey player in August 2011.
The other four women will receive payments ranging from $25,000 to $125,000.
University officials adamantly denied that they have been indifferent to reports of assaults and did not admit any wrongdoing in the settlement. They said the legal fight would be costly and bad for UConn's image.

Online child abuse reports surge, says US watchdog
By Dave Lee Technology reporter, BBC News 17 July 2014
There has been a dramatic rise in reports of child abuse images posted to commonly used parts of the internet, according to a US watchdog.
They include photos posted to publicly-accessible parts of social networks.
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a record number of reports in the first week of July, four times the weekly average.
It comes in a week UK authorities arrested 660 people in connection with online child abuse.
That investigation was believed to have been targeted at those using the so-called "dark net" - parts of the internet that are hidden and can be hard to access without special software.
But the NCMEC stressed there was still a significant and growing challenge for law enforcement agencies to deal with material on the open internet as well as the harder-to-reach areas....

Matt Sandusky, who was initially a foster child of the Sanduskys, tells Oprah Winfrey in a TV show airing Thursday night that his overnight visits with the family as a child were good "except for one part, bedtime."
At bedtime in the Sandusky's home in State College, he said, Jerry Sandusky's "ritual began."
"The overnight visits were -- they were good. I mean, except for that one part, bedtime. Bedtime was the bad part. But any other time that we were in the home, that we were doing anything in the home with the family, it was fine and it was -- again, you would look at that family and you would say, wow. Like I wish that I had brothers and sisters that cared about me. I wish that I had a mother who cooked dinner every night for the whole family. I wish that I had all of these things. But then at bedtime, his ritual began," Matt Sandusky told Winfrey in a brief clip released by the network.
The network said Sandusky discusses the grooming, methodical control and manipulation he faced as a child.
He had also discussed the alleged abuse in a documentary, "Happy Valley," shown earlier this year, and in an audiotape of a 29-minute interview with police detectives that NBC obtained at the time of Jerry Sandusky's 2012 trial....

Child Sexual Abuse Raises Likelihood Of Cardiovascular Problems For Middle-Aged Women
By Ben Wolford Jul 17, 2014
Women who were sexually abused as children are more likely to show the earliest signs of heart disease in their 40s and early 50s, researchers said Thursday....
Examining the health histories of 1,400 women ages 42 to 52, the researchers discovered those who suffered sexual abuse had thicker inner linings of their arteries, something doctors call intima-media thickness, or IMT. That thickness can lead to atherosclerosis, a buildup of plaque, and eventually blockage. About 14 percent of American children are victims of some kind of abuse, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In this study, the rates were higher: "About 16 percent of the women reported a history of childhood sexual abuse, across all racial groups, with the abuse as high as 20 percent among African-Americans," the researchers reported....
But the new paper in Stroke found trends that couldn't easily be explained. For one, women who reported suffering non-sexual child abuse weren't any more likely to have IMT than those who were not abused. And, oddly, cardiovascular risk factors like obesity and high blood pressure were not predictors of IMT. In other words, abuse victims who were otherwise healthy still showed the higher rates of IMT.

Court documents reveal surprising leniency in trials of child molestors, claims Cheit
In the early 1990s, a new narrative emerged that child sex abuse cases were part of a “moral panic” that produced a witch hunt, and the children who testified were not reliable and easily swayed by prosecutors. But Ross Cheit reveals that the issue had not been blown out of proportion at all. His book The Witch Hunt Narrative, shows that child sex abuse convictions were regular occurrences and that the crime occurred far more frequently than many believed.

Ex-senior judge Butler-Sloss to head child sex abuse inquiry 8 July 2014
Retired senior judge Elizabeth Butler-Sloss has been named as the chairwoman of a wide-ranging review into historical child sex abuse. The inquiry will examine how state institutions handled their duty of care to protect children from paedophiles.....
It comes after Mark Sedwill, the Home Office's top civil servant, answered MPs' questions about historical child abuse allegations. He was asked by the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee how his department lost or destroyed 114 files that could have shed light on alleged abuse. Mark Sedwill: "I am concerned about all material that we can't find" Mr Sedwill told the committee the files, which relate to the 1980s and 1990s, were discovered missing after an expert investigator was drafted in to look into the Home Office's handling of paedophile allegations in February last year.
He said the investigator discovered they were missing after he trawled a database of 750,000 files using search terms including "child abuse", "paedophilia" and "PIE", an anagram for the Paedophile Information Exchange....
Lady Butler-Sloss's broader, independent inquiry, will look at how seriously public bodies and other important institutions have taken their duty of care to protect children from sexual abuse.
The probe aims to address public concern over failings exposed by recent child sex abuse cases involving celebrities such as Jimmy Savile and Rolf Harris.... http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-28203914

Dark net 'used by tens of thousands of paedophiles'
By Angus Crawford BBC News 19 June 2014
Tens of thousands of paedophiles are using the so-called dark net to trade images of sexual abuse, an investigation by BBC News indicates.
One site receives as many as 500 page views per second, its founder says.
Figures from another site suggest Brits are heavily involved in producing and distributing illegal obscene images.
Britain's National Crime Agency warned in its 2014 threat assessment that abusers were turning to anonymous sites and encryption technology.
The dark net is the term used to refer to parts of the internet that are hidden and can be hard to access without special software.
One of the most popular products used to access such areas is called the TorBrowser....

Paedophile use of dark net increases for child abuse images
By Barclay Ballard 6/20/14
Tens of thousands of paedophiles are using the dark net to circulate images of sexual abuse, according to a report by the BBC.
The National Crime Agency said that abusers were increasingly turning to encryption software to maintain anonymity. The dark net is a hidden part of the Internet which can only be accessed by special software, one of the most popular of which is the TorBrowser.
This enables people to use Tor, an "onion-routing" system, which bounces encrypted data through several randomly selected servers on the network, making a PC's net address untraceable....
During the BBC investigation, the broadcaster contacted an active paedophile who ran one of the illegal chat rooms, until it closed in May 2014.
"We had over 40,000 user accounts on the site. We used to get sometimes 500 page views per second. My own collection is 12 gigabytes", he said....

Abuse Cases, and a Legacy of Skepticism
‘The Witch-Hunt Narrative’: Are We Dismissing Real Victims?
JUNE 9, 2014
....McMartin was the first of a series of prosecutions in the 1980s that have come to be seen as a collective witch hunt, in which panicked parents and incompetent investigators led children to make up stories of abuse by adults at day care centers and preschools.
At first, the news media ran with the lurid accounts of abuse, but then some skeptical reporters questioned the prevailing narrative and discredited the snowballing allegations. The pendulum swung from credulity to doubt.
But what if the skeptics went too far? What if some of the children were really abused? And what if the legacy of these cases is a disturbing tendency to disbelieve children who say they are being molested?
Those are the questions that frame this new book by Ross E. Cheit, a political scientist at Brown University who spent nearly 15 years on research, poring over old trial transcripts and interview tapes.
His conclusion about the McMartin case is that the outcome was “doubly unjust.” While he acknowledges that some defendants were falsely accused, he argues that Mr. Buckey was probably guilty, meaning that some of the children were not only sexually abused but “have been demeaned by the witch-hunt narrative’s assertion that the entire case was a ‘hoax.’ ”
It’s a provocative notion, that the debunkers deserve a debunking. Professor Cheit, who himself suffered sexual abuse as a child, criticizes the skepticism that helped bring down the prosecutions of McMartin and other day-care providers, calling it a “crusade to promote the witch-hunt narrative.”
He thinks the continued treatment of these cases as a modern-day episode of mass hysteria does disservice to children and even puts them in danger....
Most children who are sexually abused do not tell anyone. “Perpetrators often choose children on the basis of the likelihood that they will comply and keep the secret,” Dr. Lyon writes.
It’s a pattern that played out in the years of hidden sexual abuse by Catholic priests, and at Penn State by the coach Jerry Sandusky.
Professor Cheit is rightly haunted by the cover-up at Penn State. “We often minimize and deny so as to allow us to avoid seeing things we would rather not see,” he writes....

Bills would change child abuse reporting requirements in Pa., defining who reports and how
Bills would change child abuse reporting requirements in Pa., defining who reports and how
By Charles Thompson April 04, 2014
....But lawyers and non-lawyers appear to have reached a compromise on what may be the biggest upgrade yet to Pennsylvania’s child protection laws coming out of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
Final votes are expected at the Capitol next week on bills that redesign mandatory reporting requirements in cases of suspected child abuse.
Lawmakers have already modernized the definition of abuse, and approved measures that strengthen law enforcement and child welfare response.
But, as some child protection advocates note, the best system in the world doesn’t get activated without a report.
“Without a report (of suspected child abuse)… the cavalry doesn’t come running to ask that child if they’re OK,” explained Rep. Todd Stephens, a Montgomery County Republican who played a key role in late-stage negotiations on the bills.
The new requirements delineate 14 categories of mandated reporters, including all school employees, all staff at child care and medical facilities, librarians and even – in a Pennsylvania first – volunteers who work regularly in youth sports or other activities like church groups, Boy Scouts or dance companies....

Pennsylvania High Court Won’t Hear Sandusky Appeal, Dobsonville satanic murder case postponed, Alleged cult leader faces multiple raps, 3 Cognitive Strategies That Deny, Discount, & Dismiss Torture: How Individuals, Groups, Governments, & Cultures Enable Torturers
Pennsylvania High Court Won’t Hear Sandusky Appeal
AP / Mark Scolforo 4/2/14
(HARRISBURG, Pa.) — Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky’s child molestation conviction will not be reviewed by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, under an order issued Wednesday.
Sandusky asked the court to take up his 45-count conviction, arguing his lawyers were rushed too quickly to trial in 2012 and that prosecutors improperly made reference to his decision not to testify.
He also said the trial judge should have issued a jury instruction about how long it took his victims to report the abuse and that jurors should not have been told to weigh evidence of his good character against all other evidence.
The state attorney general’s office had countered that Sandusky did not provide sufficient basis for the Supreme Court to take up the matter, and that decisions made by the trial judge did not violate his rights.
Sandusky, 70, is serving a 30- to 60-year prison sentence for sexual abuse of 10 boys. His lawyer said he is disappointed the court denied his appeal.
Eight of his victims testified at trial, describing a range of abuse from grooming and fondling to oral and anal sex, including attacks in the basement of Sandusky’s home outside State College. Another witness, a graduate assistant for the team who had been a quarterback for the Nittany Lions, testified he saw Sandusky having sexual contact with a boy inside a team shower late on a Friday night....

JOHANNESBURG - The case against two boys accused of killing two teenage girls in an apparent satanic ritual in Soweto has been postponed in the Protea Magistrates Court.
The delay has been granted to allow the state time to make copies of the dockets and hand them over to the defence.
The boys, aged 15 and 16, are accused of killing 15-year-old Thandeka Moganetsi and 16-year-old Cwayita Rathazwayo whose bodies were discovered in a veld in the Dobsonville area last month.
Burnt black candles and razor blades were found at the murder scene.
The police's Kay Makhubela said, “The case was postponed to 7 April after the legal representatives requested copies and the investigation continues.”
