Sheriff says there's more child abuse going on than community knows about 4/13/09 OLEAN - According to national surveys, one in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused by their 18th birthday. Cattaraugus County Sheriff Dennis John....He said he soon learned that most children try to hide abuse. "The number of children that disclose abuse is actually very small," he said. "There's so much of it going on that we're just not aware of." He said the greatest risk to children doesn't come from strangers but from family and friends. Research has shown that in more than 90 percent of sexual abuse cases, the child and the child's parents or caregivers know and trust the abuser....Sheriff John remembers one case in Cattaraugus County where a father had been sexually abusing his daughter for more than four years. The girl eventually told authorities what was happening. "What convinced her to finally make a disclosure to us was he was beginning to abuse her younger sister," Sheriff John said. "And the first thing she said to us was, `I don't want my father to go to jail.' She still had some compassion for her father even though he had been abusing her." http://www.oleantimesherald.com/articles/2009/04/14/news/doc49e389e1d59be424238748.txt
