ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A private school in Maryland has launched an investigation into allegations that a culture of sexual abuse existed in the 1970s with administrators' knowledge, a newspaper reported.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A private school in Maryland has launched an investigation into allegations that a culture of sexual abuse existed in the 1970s with administrators' knowledge, a newspaper reported.
The Washington Post reports two Baltimore lawyers are leading the investigation into allegations at the Key School in Annapolis, Maryland. Matthew Nespole, the current head of the school that teaches prekindergarten through 12th grade, told the newspaper that a February review of allegations indicated former Key officials failed to protect students.
"It appears that members of the Key community neglected to respond appropriately to contemporaneous reports made by former students of faculty misconduct that includes the sexual victimization of students," Nespole said in a statement this month....
Joe Janney, president of the school's board of trustees, said in a statement that the allegations are "credible" and "extremely upsetting."
Former students told the newspaper it was widely known that some Key teachers had sex with underage students. Some teachers were fired after complaints from students or parents, according to interviews with accusers. But many stayed in the classrooms, continuing the alleged abuse, according to the report. The accusers, who are now in their 50s and 60s, said the school has yet to confront the scope of the behavior, and its effects are still being felt more than 40 years later....

The awareness of severe abuse and child abuse crimes has changed over the last 25 years. In the early 1990s, severe abuse survivors were often believed and supported. Then a backlash started and severe abuse survivors and their supporters were harassed and attacked. The child abuse survivor movement changed and adapted. Ten years ago, research began again to help expose severe abuse crimes. More recently, first in the UK and Australia and now in the United States, a variety of child abuse, severe abuse, sexual harassment and rape cases are bringing public awareness again to the mainstream media of severe abuse crimes. This presentation will discuss the changes of the last 25 years, with an emphasis on the more recent exposures of organized child abuse crimes and social systems that have been part of the cover up of these crimes.

This presentation systematically reviews the empirical research on the credibility of ritual abuse allegations. After presenting the findings there will be a discussion that welcomes the opinions of the attendees regarding their own conclusions including considerations of the community standard, professional ethics, related forensic questions, and advocacy for extreme abuse survivors.
Randy Noblitt, PhD, is a clinical psychologist (licensed in Texas) and professor of clinical psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University, Los Angeles. In the course of his practice, Randy has treated more than 300 individuals who met the criteria for dissociative identity disorder. He is the principle author of Cult and Ritual Abuse: Its History, Anthropology and Recent Discovery in Contemporary America (Praeger, 1995. 2000), and its third edition, Cult and Ritual Abuse: Narratives, Evidence and Healing Approaches (Praeger, 2014). Jillian Jackson: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
CPT Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is short-term, specific 12 session therapeutic intervention to help adults address specific life events associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It was originally designed to assist victims of rape and it has been widely used within the Veterans Administration to assist combat veterans address PTSD. Clinicians are now using this evidence-based practice to help individuals who struggle with a continuum of traumas. CPT is a derivate of the more widely known Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Research demonstrates that CPT is effective in reducing the symptoms associated with PTSD. In this workshop, participants will learn the history of CPT, determine who is an appropriate candidate for the intervention, and how CPT is administered. The workshop will also highlight the research supporting this intervention and discuss it’s outcomes.
Jillian Jackson received a Masters of Social Work from Marywood University. Jillian provides services at the Village of Radikal Healing in Warminster and online through WeCounsel. Jillian also maintains employment at a local psychiatric hospital where her main focus is on adults with co-occurring disorders: mental health and substance abuse. Jillian’s experience includes working with a myriad of people with various life challenges and stressors and utilizes a holistic approach in assisting both adolescents and adults. Jillian offers individual, couples, and family counseling. Jillian’s experience includes grant writing, creating community-based programs and working with individuals who have extensive histories of trauma. Jillian is trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy and is certified in Reiki I.

This workshop will provide a primer introduction to various modalities that are available and also highlight why it is vital for a process of healing and transformation to be tailored to each individual’s needs and experience.

(CNN)Bill Cosby, convicted of sexual assault. Harvey Weinstein, arrested and charged with rape and sex abuse.
For many in Hollywood, this is a time they could have scarcely imagined. And while the two cases are distinct and separate, the symbolism of these events coming roughly a month apart, less than eight months after allegations against Weinstein went public, is difficult to ignore.
Powerful men in the media have seemingly existed inside a protective cocoon. Even as the #MeToo movement gained momentum, it seemed unlikely that someone like Cosby or Weinstein would face jeopardy from the justice system....
In the last month, that perception has been shaken. The verdict against Cosby, especially, served notice that all the advantages the comedian enjoyed -- including a public that didn't want to believe the worst about him -- could no longer be counted upon to inoculate him against being held accountable.

Researchers from the McGill Group for Suicide Studies, based at the Douglas Mental Health University Institute and McGill University's Department of Psychiatry, have just published research in the American Journal of Psychiatry that suggests that the long-lasting effects of traumatic childhood experiences, like severe abuse, may be due to an impaired structure and functioning of cells in the anterior cingulate cortex. This is a part of the brain which plays an important role in the regulation of emotions and mood.
The researchers believe that these changes may contribute to the emergence of depressive disorders and suicidal behaviour....
Impaired neural connectivity may affect the regulation of emotions
The researchers discovered that the thickness of the myelin coating of a significant proportion of the nerve fibres was reduced ONLY in the brains of those who had suffered from child abuse. They also found underlying molecular alterations that selectively affect the cells that are responsible for myelin generation and maintenance. Finally, they found increases in the diameters of some of the largest axons among only this group and they speculate that together, these changes may alter functional coupling between the cingulate cortex and subcortical structures such as the amygdala and nucleus accumbens (areas of the brain linked respectively to emotional regulation and to reward and satisfaction) and contribute to altered emotional processing in people who have been abused during childhood.
The researchers conclude that adversity in early life may lastingly disrupt a range of neural functions in the anterior cingulate cortex....

Objective:
Child abuse has devastating and long-lasting consequences, considerably increasing the lifetime risk of negative mental health outcomes such as depression and suicide. Yet the neurobiological processes underlying this heightened vulnerability remain poorly understood. The authors investigated the hypothesis that epigenetic, transcriptomic, and cellular adaptations may occur in the anterior cingulate cortex as a function of child abuse....
Results:
A history of child abuse was associated with cell type–specific changes in DNA methylation of oligodendrocyte genes and a global impairment of the myelin-related transcriptional program. These effects were absent in the depressed suicide completers with no history of child abuse, and they were strongly correlated with myelin gene expression changes observed in the animal model. Furthermore, a selective and significant reduction in the thickness of myelin sheaths around small-diameter axons was observed in individuals with history of child abuse.
Conclusions:
The results suggest that child abuse, in part through epigenetic reprogramming of oligodendrocytes, may lastingly disrupt cortical myelination, a fundamental feature of cerebral connectivity.

Presenters
Ellen Lacter, Ph.D., has been a clinical psychologist in San Diego, California, USA, for 27 years and specializes in the treatment of trauma and dissociative disorders in both adults and children. She has a number of published chapters in edited books on the subjects of ritual abuse and mind control. Her website is http://www.endritualabuse.org/
Her presentation will discuss: breaking torture-based mind control down into the psychological mechanisms that allow for its installation and ongoing control, and then to draw upon these concepts to discuss how to work to overcome mind control.
Lee Schwecke RN, BSN, MSN, EdD is an Associate Professor Emeritus, Indiana University School of Nursing, Indianapolis, IN. She taught theory and clinical Psychiatric Nursing for 38 ½ years. She co-authored 5 editions of: Keltner, Schwecke, Bostrom. (1991-2007) Psychiatric Nursing. St. Louis, MO, Mosby Year Book. Each edition included her chapters on Survivors of Violence and Trauma. She wrote 2 editorials for the Journal of Psychosocial Nursing: 1) Childhood Sexual Abuse, PTSD, and Borderline Personality Disorder: Understanding the Connections (2009); 2) Beyond Childhood Sexual Abuse: Ritual Abuse-Torture and Human Trafficking (2011). She has worked part time as a staff nurse in the Psychiatric Pavilion of Community Hospital North in Indianapolis for 25 years.
Her presentation will discuss: Working with Inpatient Survivors of Violence and Trauma. She will talk about the increased difficulties in providing quality care with inpatient survivors, her chapter sections and journal articles, getting articles to all units and finding outpatient and internet resources for after discharge.
Rev. Rik Fire MSW, LCSW, LISW is an Ordained Interfaith Minister and Board Trustee of Ecumenicon Fellowship. He is a Licensed Clinical/Independent Social Worker in the states of Iowa, Louisiana and Pennsylvania and is in private practice as a therapist specializing in trauma, sexuality, gender and holistic healing modalities. Additionally, Rik is an Advanced Certified Shamanic Practitioner and Reiki Master. He lives and serves at Village of Radikal Healing in Bucks County, PA and is in the process of renovating another retreat center by the ocean in NJ that will be called Agni Ashram. Rik is working on a Doctorate in Holistic Nutrition and Natural Health.
His presentation will discuss: Shamanic Technology for Treatment of Trauma
In shamanic worldview, it is believed that trauma effects the system of the being—on a mind, body and spirit level. There are techniques and practices in shamanic technology, in which the practitioner can access the “other realm” on behalf of the client to gain information on the work to be completed. Based on information received via shamanic journeywork, the practitioner will develop a treatment plan on recommended interventions. This workshop will discuss the primary shamanic modalities used in the treatment of trauma including journeywork, extraction, soul retrieval and energy work.

Presenters
Ellen Lacter, Ph.D., has been a clinical psychologist in San Diego, California, USA, for 27 years and specializes in the treatment of trauma and dissociative disorders in both adults and children. She has a number of published chapters in edited books on the subjects of ritual abuse and mind control. Her website is http://www.endritualabuse.org/
Her presentation will discuss: breaking torture-based mind control down into the psychological mechanisms that allow for its installation and ongoing control, and then to draw upon these concepts to discuss how to work to overcome mind control.
Lee Schwecke RN, BSN, MSN, EdD is an Associate Professor Emeritus, Indiana University School of Nursing, Indianapolis, IN. She taught theory and clinical Psychiatric Nursing for 38 ½ years. She co-authored 5 editions of: Keltner, Schwecke, Bostrom. (1991-2007) Psychiatric Nursing. St. Louis, MO, Mosby Year Book. Each edition included her chapters on Survivors of Violence and Trauma. She wrote 2 editorials for the Journal of Psychosocial Nursing: 1) Childhood Sexual Abuse, PTSD, and Borderline Personality Disorder: Understanding the Connections (2009); 2) Beyond Childhood Sexual Abuse: Ritual Abuse-Torture and Human Trafficking (2011). She has worked part time as a staff nurse in the Psychiatric Pavilion of Community Hospital North in Indianapolis for 25 years.
Her presentation will discuss: Working with Inpatient Survivors of Violence and Trauma. She will talk about the increased difficulties in providing quality care with inpatient survivors, her chapter sections and journal articles, getting articles to all units and finding outpatient and internet resources for after discharge.
Rev. Rik Fire MSW, LCSW, LISW is an Ordained Interfaith Minister and Board Trustee of Ecumenicon Fellowship. He is a Licensed Clinical/Independent Social Worker in the states of Iowa, Louisiana and Pennsylvania and is in private practice as a therapist specializing in trauma, sexuality, gender and holistic healing modalities. Additionally, Rik is an Advanced Certified Shamanic Practitioner and Reiki Master. He lives and serves at Village of Radikal Healing in Bucks County, PA and is in the process of renovating another retreat center by the ocean in NJ that will be called Agni Ashram. Rik is working on a Doctorate in Holistic Nutrition and Natural Health.
His presentation will discuss: Shamanic Technology for Treatment of Trauma
In shamanic worldview, it is believed that trauma effects the system of the being—on a mind, body and spirit level. There are techniques and practices in shamanic technology, in which the practitioner can access the “other realm” on behalf of the client to gain information on the work to be completed. Based on information received via shamanic journeywork, the practitioner will develop a treatment plan on recommended interventions. This workshop will discuss the primary shamanic modalities used in the treatment of trauma including journeywork, extraction, soul retrieval and energy work.

Children who experience severe forms of abuse are around three times as likely to develop schizophrenia and related psychoses in later life compared with children who do not experience such abuse, according to a study that has brought together psychiatric data from almost 80,000 people.
The results add to a growing body of evidence that childhood maltreatment or abuse can raise the risk of developing mental illnesses in adulthood, including depression, personality disorders and anxiety.
Prof Richard Bentall of the University of Liverpool's Institute of Psychology, Health and Society, who led the study, showed that the risk of developing psychosis increased in line with the amount of abuse or trauma a child had gone through, with the most severely affected children having a 50-fold increased risk compared with children who had suffered no abuse. He also showed that the type of trauma experienced in childhood affected the subsequent psychiatric symptoms later in life....
Bentall's team analysed 36 published studies that contained data on childhood maltreatment (including sexual, physical and emotional abuse, death of a parent, school bullying and neglect) and psychiatric symptoms in almost 80,000 people, collected over the course of 30 years. People who experienced these types of trauma in childhood were between 2.7 and 3 times as likely to develop schizophrenia as adults, the team found. The latest results add to recent evidence that childhood abuse can lead to serious problems in later life. In 2011, scientists at the Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) at King's College London found that people with a history of abuse or maltreatment during childhood were more than twice as likely to have recurrent episodes of depression in adulthood and also 43% more likely to experience a poor outcome when it came to psychological or drug-based treatment. They examined data from 16 epidemiological studies involving more than 23,000 people in total and 10 clinical trials involving more than 3,000 people
The mechanisms behind the link between childhood maltreatment and schizophrenia are not yet understood. Earlier this year, psychiatrists at Harvard University found that being sexually or emotionally abused as a child correlated with reduced volumes of three important areas of the hippocampus, which is involved in the control of memory and regulation of emotions. Abstract
Evidence suggests that adverse experiences in childhood are associated with psychosis. To examine the association between childhood adversity and trauma (sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional/psychological abuse, neglect, parental death, and bullying) and psychosis outcome, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychINFO, and Web of Science were searched from January 1980 through November 2011. We included prospective cohort studies, large-scale cross-sectional studies investigating the association between childhood adversity and psychotic symptoms or illness, case-control studies comparing the prevalence of adverse events between psychotic patients and controls using dichotomous or continuous measures, and case-control studies comparing the prevalence of psychotic symptoms between exposed and nonexposed subjects using dichotomous or continuous measures of adversity and psychosis. The analysis included 18 case-control studies (n = 2048 psychotic patients and 1856 nonpsychiatric controls), 10 prospective and quasi-prospective studies (n = 41?803) and 8 population-based cross-sectional studies (n = 35?546). There were significant associations between adversity and psychosis across all research designs, with an overall effect of OR = 2.78 (95% CI = 2.34–3.31). The integration of the case-control studies indicated that patients with psychosis were 2.72 times more likely to have been exposed to childhood adversity than controls (95% CI = 1.90–3.88). The association between childhood adversity and psychosis was also significant in population-based cross-sectional studies (OR = 2.99 [95% CI = 2.12–4.20]) as well as in prospective and quasi-prospective studies (OR = 2.75 [95% CI = 2.17–3.47]). The estimated population attributable risk was 33% (16%–47%). In 2009, the NRCCPS collaborated with the Family Violence Prevention Fund (FVPF) and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges (NCJFCJ) to publish Child and Family Service Review Outcomes: Strategies to Improve Domestic Violence Responses in CFSR Program Improvement Plans to help child protection agencies develop and implement policy and best practice respond to the need for improving and deepening the child pro identified in the CFSR process. http://nrccps.org/special-initiatives/domestic-violence/

Most survivors have questions about their memory processes at some time: 'is it true, did it happen?' or 'why can't I remember?', or even 'why do I keep having intrusive memories?' As we heal, we also become aware of times when our memories seem different than how we've been lead to believe 'normal' memory works. We feel like we forget too much, or we have nearly perfect memories. Often questions about memories of abuse are addressed in therapy, groups, books, etc; but questions about the everyday workings of memory, and how abuse may be affecting our brain function, stay unanswered. This webinar will primarily focus on what current psychological science knows about basic memory processes, as well as issues unique to the survivor community, learning styles and how they affect memory, tricks to assist remembering, and plenty of Q & A time.
Alikina is a survivor of severe abuse and a current grad-school student halfway through her Master's Degree in Mental Health Counseling. She has presented articles and webinars for Survivorship in the past. She has worked with abuse survivors through community support organizations and been in therapy as both the client and the therapist, and plans to work with abuse and trauma survivors as her career path.

SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) -- Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs broke his silence Friday, delivering before jurors a 55-minute sermon defending plural marriage as ordered by God and protected by the U.S. Constitution.
Jeffs, 55, is accused of sexually assaulting two underage girls and could face life in prison if convicted. He fired his high-powered defense team on Thursday and has been representing himself, but he made no opening statement and spent hours sitting alone at the defense table staring into space in silence while prosecutors made their case.
That changed, however, as FBI agent John Broadway testified about seizing eight desktop computers and 120 boxes and large folders of documents from the sect's West Texas compound in April 2008. SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) -- Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs broke his silence Friday, delivering before jurors a 55-minute sermon defending plural marriage as ordered by God and protected by the U.S. Constitution.
Jeffs, 55, is accused of sexually assaulting two underage girls and could face life in prison if convicted. He fired his high-powered defense team on Thursday and has been representing himself, but he made no opening statement and spent hours sitting alone at the defense table staring into space in silence while prosecutors made their case.
That changed, however, as FBI agent John Broadway testified about seizing eight desktop computers and 120 boxes and large folders of documents from the sect's West Texas compound in April 2008. RESULTS: Signs and symptoms of dissociative identity disorder in childhood and adulthood were corroborated independently and from several sources in all 12 cases; objective evidence of severe abuse was obtained in 11 cases. The subjects had amnesia for most of the abuse and underreported it. Marked changes in writing style and/or signatures were documented in 10 cases.
CONCLUSIONS: This study establishes, once and for all, the linkage between early severe abuse and dissociative identity disorder. Further, the data demonstrate that the disorder can be distinguished from malingering and from other disorders. The study shows that it is possible, with great effort, to obtain objective evidence of both the symptoms of dissociative identity disorder and the abuse that engenders it. The data were also analyzed for clinical significance. Blind ratings of the data were performed by comparing the results of the individual dependent measures across the alter personalities of individual MPD and control subjects according to established ophthalmological criteria.
The ratings for clinical significance showed that the MPD subjects had 4.5 times the average number of changes in optical functioning between alter personalities of the control subjects, with a mean of 2.56 clinically significant changes for the MPD subjects and .55 clinically significant changes for the control subjects. This difference was also statistically significant (p less than .01).

Numerous clinical reports suggest that these alter personality states exhibit distinct physiological differences. We investigated differential autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity across nine subjects with MPD and five controls, who produced "alter" personality states by simulation and by hypnosis or deep relaxation.
Eight of the nine MPD subjects consistently manifested physiologically distinct alter personality states. Three of the five controls were also produced physiologically distinct states, but these differed from those of the MPD subjects. A habituation paradigm demonstrated carryover effects at the ANS levels from one state to the next for both groups.

Brain maps were recorded on a patient with a multiple personality disorder (10 alternate personalities). Maps were recorded with eyes open and eyes closed during 2 different sessions, 2 months apart. Maps from each alternate personality were compared to those of the basic personality "S", some maps were similar and some were different, especially with eyes open.
Findings that were replicated in the second session showed differences from 4 personalities, especially in theta and beta 2 frequencies on the left temporal and right posterior regions. A rank ordering of the differences in the brain maps of the alternate personalities from S were similar to the rank ordering of the differences in personality characteristics, as judged by the psychiatrist dealing with this patient. Maps from S acting like some of her personalities or from a professional actress portraying the different personalities did not reveal significant differences.

To study the clinical phenomenology of multiple personality, 50 consecutive patients with DSM-III multiple personality disorder were assessed using clinical history, psychiatric interview, neurological examination, electroencephalogram, MMPI, intelligence testing, and a variety of psychiatric rating scales. Results revealed that patients with multiple personality are usually women who present with depression, suicide attempts, repeated amnesic episodes, and a history of childhood trauma, particularly sexual abuse. Also common were headaches, hysterical conversion, and sexual dysfunction. Intellectual level varied from borderline to superior.
The MMPI reflected underlying character pathology in addition to depression and dissociation. Significant neurological or electroencephalographical abnormalities were infrequent. These data suggest that the etiology of multiple personality is strongly related to childhood trauma rather than to an underlying electrophysiological dysfunction.

We review the empirical evidence for the validity of the Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) diagnosis, the vast majority of which has come from research conducted within the last 10 years. After reviewing three different guidelines to establish diagnostic validity, we conclude that considerable converging evidence supports the inclusion of DID in the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders.
For instance, DID appears to meet all of the guidelines for inclusion and none of the exclusion guidelines; proposed by Blashfield et al. [Comprehensive Psychiatry 31 (1990) 15-19], and it is one of the few disorders currently supported by taxometric research.

This rural community isn't used to making headlines, especially the kind it's had lately....perhaps the worst case of child abuse ever in these parts - one that speaks volumes about what can hide behind closed doors. On April 28, deputies checking a home for stolen goods discovered a naked, starving little girl inside a filthy, makeshift cage. Under a shed nearby, they found the remains of a baby....
Up until a few weeks ago, the trailer was home to Brian and Shannon Gore. Both have longtime roots in the area and no record of trouble with the law. Shannon, 25, worked at the Bojangles restaurant in nearby Yorktown. Brian, 29, listed his occupation as "HVAC Service Tech" on a Gloucester High School reunion website.
On a video posted to their Myspace pages, the Gores look like any other young couple. It was taken in 2008 on Shannon's birthday, the day Brian got down on one knee and proposed to her in a crowded restaurant. Shannon beams, hugs Brian and admires her new ring. Family and friends ooh, ahh and applaud.
But behind that happy moment, the couple already had dark secrets: two children, both born at home, with no medical assistance. One was hidden away; the other was buried in the yard - dead from causes that, so far, remain a mystery.
Ron Smith, one of Shannon Gore's attorneys, has told media that the couple concealed the pregnancies because they weren't married, though no one has explained how they hid Shannon's swollen belly in small-town Gloucester....
Edwards, who has three kids of her own, said the couple strolled the neighborhood with their new baby, who appeared well-cared for.
"I didn't know either of them very well," Edwards said, "but she sent over bottles and pacifiers when my baby was born, and I'd see him out cutting the grass. They seemed like nice people. I'd wave to them."
Despite the thin walls and cramped space of trailer park living, "None of us knew they had a daughter," Edwards said. "We never heard her cry or anything. Not even people who've been inside their house."
It all came to light when a burglary investigation led Gloucester detectives to the Gores' trailer. Shannon Gore was suspected of selling about an ounce of stolen gold to an auction house - bars of bullion that had been swiped from a home in the county.

One Canadian report that assessed 4,110 pedophilic images taken from 15,662 websites hosting child pornography showed (Canadian Centre for Child Protection, 2009)
....These examples provide a brief insight into how unexpressed past victimization and traumatization pain and suffering create present day real body memory pain – real body talk – but as real as the physical body talk pain is experienced it is generally not relieved with pain medication. It is relieved when she has succeeded to process the remembered torture ordeal.
