'He was a man with kids he couldn't help. A man with tremendous wreckage in his personal life, a man divorcing his longtime wife, a woman who was struggling with delusional thoughts and a mind that was turning on her.
'He was still a man playing at the edge of death', writes the author. Zanes, and even his close friend, singer Stevie Nicks, didn't realize that Petty had slipped into heroin addiction.
Hometown hit: In 1966, Petty formed a band in Gainesville, Florida that was popular locally but received little notice from the mainstream audience
It took years for Petty, now 65, to get past feeling that his father, Earl, a salesman of 'really crappy plastic toys' or insurance was anything less than an 'a**hole' for the physical and mental abuse that colored his entire life.
When Tom nailed the fin of a '55 Cadillac with a slingshot, his father 'beat the living s**t of me' with a belt.
'He beat me so bad that I was covered in raised welts, from my head to my toes. Five years old. I was f***ing five.'
Realizing that he wasn't going to get an education in that household, he escaped into television.
'And I think it was television that saved my life, that raised and educated me.'
None of the families on television were like his. He and his younger brother, Bruce, were basically on their own. Nothing like Ozzie and Harriet's warm and fuzzy life existed in their world.
But he did see that everything great was coming from California – television city, Hollywood.
'Television city? Man, that's where I need to be,' he thought.

When I was on 90210 a few years ago, the character I played, Naomi, was raped by someone she knew. I welcomed the story line, thinking it was important for viewers. I memorized my lines and rehearsed the scenes. I felt ready to go. Then when the cameras were rolling on an intense scene — a fight with an unsupportive friend after the assault — I broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. My castmates thought I had done a great job playing the part. They had no idea that I had actually been sexually assaulted by someone I knew in real life.
For you to understand what happened to me and my reaction to it — burying the assault deep down inside — first you need to know a few things about my life. I’m telling my story now because I think it’s time to talk about the truth. When I was a kid, my candor got me in a lot of trouble, and I learned to stay quiet, to keep my feelings to myself. But no more. I’m in spiritual warrior mode.

The "90210" star has opened up about being raped when she was a child, then being sexually assaulted early in her Hollywood career, revealing these traumatic incidents in the July issue of Cosmopolitan. The actress said that she had decided to speak out now to empower other women and let them know that "they have a voice."
McCord, 26, described her childhood in Monroe, Ga., as "extremely religious and conservative," with a pastor father who believed in discipline that she said was more akin to abuse, describing it as "painful and ritualistic."....
The harrowing upbringing led a teenage McCord to have unhealthy relationships with men, including provoking them to be violent toward her. "My sexual relationships were dark and violently dramatic," she said.
It was only when she discussed it with her first boyfriend that she realized her parents' disciplinary tactics were actually abuse, and she confronted them about it, calling it "an important step."
When McCord moved to Los Angeles for her acting career at age 18, she was raped by a friend who staying overnight at her apartment....
McCord was able to pull through her depression with professional help and support of her family and friends — and said she wants to help others who have gone through similar trauma, including launching a college speaking tour this fall.
"Don't put yourself in a box," McCord advises. "Don't let the polite lies of society silence you. Honestly, I would endure everything all over again - it has led me to my own revolution."

The Nevada actor who publicly accused “X-Men” director Bryan Singer of sexually abusing him when he was 15 named three other Hollywood figures on Monday and said they too preyed on him during his teenage years.
Michael Egan III, 31, filed new federal lawsuits on Monday that accuse Garth R. Ancier, Gary Wayne Goddard and David Alexander Neuman of sexually assaulting him when he was as a minor in the late '90s.
Egan and his lawyer, Jeff Herman, who previously represented victims in the molestation lawsuits against “Sesame Street” puppeteer Kevin Clash, said the three men were allegedly part, along with Singer, of a “sordid sex ring” that preyed on teenage boys seeking stardom in Tinseltown. They allegedly attended “notorious parties” in Los Angeles and Hawaii, where underage boys were “groomed” to be sexually victimized and plied with drugs, alcohol and gifts — and sometimes subjected to violence, according to Egan and his lawyer.
Efforts to reach the three men for comment were not immediately successful....
Egan filed a separate federal lawsuit last week against the “X-Men” director, claiming that Singer repeatedly sexually abused him when he was a vulnerable teen in the late '90s. The accusations include forced sodomy.
Singer has denied the allegations, and his lawyer raising the possibility of a counter suit....

The man who has sued "X-Men" director Bryan Singer -- claiming he was sexually assaulted when he was 15 -- has just filed lawsuits against 3 other Hollywood big wigs, also claiming sexual assault.
The 3 men named in the new lawsuit are Garth Ancier, David Neuman and Gary Goddard.
Ancier has a slew of hits under his belt, including The Ricki Lake Show, which he created. He headed up the Fox entertainment group and produced 21 Jump Street, Married ... with Children, The Simpsons and In Living Color. He also developed Home Improvement at Disney. And at NBC he put The West Wing on the air.
Neuman is the former president of Disney TV. Goddard produced off-Broadway shows.
According to the new lawsuits, Ancier sexually abused Egan numerous times by sodomizing him, forcing oral sex and fondling him -- when he was 15 at an Encino estate. The suit goes on to allege Ancier sexually abused Egan in Hawaii 2 years later.
The suit against Goddard and Neuman are similar -- alleging they were part of a Hollywood sex ring, giving Egan alcohol and drugs and sexually assaulted him at the Encino estate and in Hawaii....
The state of Hawaii has allowed alleged victims of sexual assault to sue, even if the statute of limitations has long since expired -- but the deadline for filing is Thursday.

....Adults in the Hollywood system and his own family abused him mentally and sexually, he says, at a time when he was one of the world's biggest child stars. He's only recently figured out how to defeat these real-life terrors.
"It's all about communication," Feldman said in an interview with the Daily News this week. "Victims need to feel they can open up and express themselves in these situations."
Feldman opened up about his own abuse in Coreyography, a memoir published in October that details the California native's quick rise from television commercials to feature films, along with his often-rocky friendship with fellow troubled child actor Corey Haim, who died in 2010, and Michael Jackson, whom he first met on the set of "Goonies."
One reviewer described the book as "unflinchingly bleak."
"I had a very rough childhood," Feldman said. "But when I was on the set and working with my peers, in films like 'Goonies,' I made deep bonds I still carry today. I try to look back on most of it in a good and positive light."....
In Coreyography, Feldman claims he was sexually abused by men in his circles, including his own employees. They would often give him drugs before, during and after, and he developed addictions before he turned 18.
"I was just trying to depress those feelings," he said. "It's fairly common for victims to become addicts."
Feldman didn't identify his alleged abusers because the statute of limitations ran out years ago, but he said at least one is a well-known Hollywood figure.
Victims often recall the abuse decades after it happened, when memories are jarred loose by sobriety or therapy, and Feldman said abusers shouldn't get a pass just because of the calendar....

Child sexual abuse cases in Hollywood attract attention
At least a dozen child molestation and child pornography prosecutions since 2000 have involved actors, managers, production assistants and others in the entertainment industry.

....Advocates and professionals who work with victims of child sexual abuse say predators exploit the glittery lure of Hollywood to prey on aspiring actors or models. They assert that the problem is more widespread than the industry is willing to acknowledge and have called for tougher laws and better screening of those who represent or work with children.
"Unlike other settings, such as Little League, Scouts, day care and school volunteers, where adults who have unsupervised access to children are required to comply with fingerprinting requirements, there are no such standards in the entertainment industry," said Paula Dorn, co-founder of the BizParentz Foundation, a nonprofit group for families of child actors.
....The recent arrests prompted a bill, expected to be filed this month with the California Assembly, that would require licensing and criminal background checks for those who work with actors under age 16. It would prohibit registered sex offenders from serving as child managers, photographers, career counselors or publicists.
"Under the existing law, talent agents are regulated; however, casting directors, managers and photographers are not. This loophole makes it very easy for a predator to gain access to children working within the entertainment industry," said the bill's sponsor, Assemblywoman Nora Campos (D-San Jose).
