As survivors, many of us feel the need for help from a mental health professional from time to time. Yet too often, attempts to get help seem to sputter along, or even fail all together. Most therapists are caring people with a sincere desire to help, and most clients who seek professional assistance are doing their best to explain their needs and ask for that help.

If most people are mostly doing their best most of the time, why are so many clients left with the feeling that they aren't getting what they need from therapy, and why do so many therapists appear to be dealing with a completely different person from you, the lady or gentleman sitting in their office?

Often, the answer is that therapists have not experienced severe trauma and are speaking from a 'healthy lifetime' point of view, overlaid with specific ideas, theories, and requirements of their profession. Meanwhile, survivors of severe, chronic abuse are speaking from the point of view of people who have rarely, if ever, experienced a safe, content lifestyle, and while many of us are very experienced in seeing therapists, we still don't know what the heck those therapists are thinking.

The goal of this webinar is to provide the client with some insight into the mindset of the therapist (and therapists with insight into the mindset of the client), so that clients and therapists can communicate effectively.

Alikina has experience as both a survivor and a therapist. She grew up in a household that was emotionally, spiritually, physically, sexually, and ritually abusive. She has a BA in psychology and will finish her Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling this year. Alikina has been seeing clients in a community counseling center for over a year. One of her current projects focuses on collecting terminology that is often misunderstood between therapists and clients.

Ginny Fouts, LPC, LMFT, is founder of Innovative Therapies LLC. Mrs. Fouts has worked in the mental health field for 30 years in a variety of settings. She has experience helping individuals, couples, adolescents and groups, along with a wide-range of training working with those who have experienced severe trauma. Over the years she has seen counseling bring healing to many lives and relationships.

The webinar focus will be on how to recognize the signs for these types of traumas and different ways of healing. We will talk about the different types of programs and how not to get bogged down in the labyrinth of details. Ginny will discuss some of the different levels of programming so you will recognize in the early stages what levels, as a therapist, to look for and how to know you are making progress.

Neil Brick is a survivor of ritual abuse. He founded S.M.A.R.T.
( http://ritualabuse.us ) a ritual abuse educational research resource with a ritual abuse newsletter and annual conferences. He is a member of the Survivorship Board of Directors. He is an advocate for getting the truth about ritual abuse out to the general public.

The webinar focus will be on how survivors can safely empower themselves by getting the truth out about the reality of ritual abuse to other child abuse survivors and the general public. Different ways of reaching the public and the media will be discussed.

One of her first guests on that Baltimore show was Truddi Chase, a woman who, after suffering sexual abuse by her stepfather that started when she was 2 years old, split into 92 distinct personalities.
"This is a story like no other that you will ever hear," Oprah says. Truddi talks about the abuse and her recovery in her book When Rabbit Howls. Her life story was made into a made-for-television movie starring Shelly Long called The Voices Within: The Lives of Truddi Chase.

Oprah Show producer Kirsten Williams traveled to London to interview Kim Noble, a woman with dissociative identity disorder—formerly called multiple identity disorder—and ended up speaking with eight personalities. Read her account of what this experience was like....How many of the 20 personalities did you meet?
Over four days, I met "Patricia," "Judy," "Bonny," "Ken," "Ria," "Dawn," "Salome" and "Missy."
Was there a visible process Kim went through when a different personality was about to take over?
The change could be as subtle as a blink of an eye. Other times it was similar to when you are nodding off to sleep and you catch yourself to wake up. The transition back to "Patricia" was harder to detect. Sometimes I would be talking to one "alter," and then Aimee or "Patricia" would start laughing because "Patricia" was back, and I didn't know it. Pretty soon, I got the hang of it.
