Cardinal Pell admits he did not act on abuse claim
March 2, 2016 Australia
Vatican treasurer Cardinal George Pell has admitted he did not act after a boy told him about a paedophile priest.
The cardinal told an Australian Royal Commission into child abuse that a student at St Patrick's College in Ballarat said Brother Edward Dowlan was "misbehaving with boys" in 1974.
He said it was "casually mentioned" and the boy did not ask him to act.
Dowlan, who has since changed his name to Ted Bales, was jailed last year for abusing boys in the 1970s and '80s.
Cardinal Pell is giving evidence from Rome to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sex Abuse....
Pell said it was a "disastrous coincidence" that five paedophiles came to be at the same school and parish in Ballarat in the 1970s....

Very Reverend Robert Waddington sexually abused choirboys for decades
Inquiry into the abuse has slammed Lord Hope, former Archbishop of York
Report claims he was made aware of misconduct 19 times but did not act

A former archbishop who failed to act on alleged crimes of a paedophile priest should be jailed, the abuser’s victims have said.
Lord Hope, the former Archbishop of York, did not act on 19 occasions when allegations of abuse or inappropriate conduct by the priest were raised with him, a scathing report revealed yesterday.
But despite that, Lord Hope remains as an honorary assistant bishop in the Diocese of Bradford.
Eli Ward and Bim Atkinson, who were among seven victims of the Very Reverend Robert Waddington, former Dean of Manchester, said it is ‘incredible’ that the man who did nothing to stop the priest has been allowed to keep his post.Waddington, who kept an official position in the church until 2005 and died in 2007, targeted young choirboys over several decades. One of the seven victims committed suicide in 1989....
Waddington then moved to York Minster, where more children were abused. He stayed in a lesser post there until 2005, despite the allegations made to Lord Hope, according to the report, which was commissioned by current Archbishop of York, the Most Reverend John Sentamu....

'It's rape': Sayreville High School players face charges of abusive hazing
By Echo Chambers 22 October 2014
A small New Jersey town is reeling weeks after seven high-school varsity American football players were accused of charges ranging from hazing to aggravated sexual assault earlier this month.
According to the victims, seniors on the Sayreville War Memorial High School team would run into the locker room, turn the lights off, pin them to the floor and, at the very least, grab their buttocks. This allegedly happened on multiple occasions between 19 and 29 September.
Three of the players are facing more serious charges, including the sexual penetration of one victim.
By calling sexual abuse hazing, society grants those perpetrators a free pass”
Gary Phillips The Journal News
This may have been a orchestrated event. Four players would hold a victim on the floor while two were on lookout, one parent told NJ.com after their son confided in them. One player would signal the start of the process with a howl, then turn off the lights and assault the freshman....
Michael Kasdan says there's another word for what happened.
"It's rape," he writes for the Good Men Project. "Yes, it occurred as part of a football team hazing program, and it is boys acting against other boys, but - if the allegations are true - it is rape just the same."
Kasdan says that what happened in Sayreville was abuse, with the sexual aspect being another way to assert dominance.
While the stories are disturbing, they are far from uncommon, says Robert Silverman of the Daily Beast. It's a part of a larger issue across the country and at all levels of the sport....

Anti-Abuse Activist Joey Diangello Dies of Overdose, But His Legacy Lives On
Former Satmar Hasid Buried in Monsey Community He Left
Survivor of Abuse: In 2009, Joey Diangello, who says he was abused as a child in a Brooklyn Hasidic community, lobbied the New York State legislature for a bill to extend the statute of limitations for claims of sexual abuse.
By Hody Nemes
Published October 23, 2014, issue of October 31, 2014.
As a teenager, Joey Diangello, a self-described survivor of child sex abuse, left the insular Satmar Hasidic community of Williamsburg, in Brooklyn, where he’d grown up and plunged into the world of heavy metal music....
But in death, Diangello, a co-founder of the group Survivors for Justice, which seeks to expose child sexual abuse in the Orthodox community — where it is often repressed — returned to the ultra-Orthodox enclave of Monsey, New York. On October 19, he was buried in a cemetery there under the birth name he abandoned long ago: Yoel Deutsch....
When he was 7 years old, Diangello entered a mikveh, a ritual bathhouse, on Marcy Avenue in Brooklyn. Allegedly, while he was in the water, a man whose face he never saw raped him. “I think when that person raped me, he murdered my Jewish soul,” Diangello told PIX11 in 2009....
Diangello stopped going to the mikveh, though he kept the alleged rape a secret. At age 17 he broke with his family and left the Satmar community.
By 2009, Diangello was ready to revisit his old life. When he helped found Survivors for Justice, he spoke out publicly about his own trauma.
He also demonstrated and lobbied in favor of the “Markey Bill,” state legislation aimed at expanding the statute of limitations for victims to sue individuals and institutions responsible for child sexual abuse in New York State. Currently, the state maintains particularly short time limits, though children who are abused often do not understand and confront their abuse until well into adulthood. The bill, which has passed the state assembly several times, would also offer a one-time window for victims of older crimes to pursue their cases. It has repeatedly failed to pass the State Senate....
In a 2009 interview with NPR, Diangello described his outlook by citing a song by his favorite heavy metal band. In Metallica’s “Broken, Beaten & Scarred,” he noted, “one of the verses is: ‘They scratched me, they scraped me, they cut and raped me.’ And that’s my life right there. When I listen to it, it gives me strength.”....

Witness gives chilling account of ritual murder, Paedophile priest told boy (7) he could get dead grandfather into heaven if he performed sex act
Witness gives chilling account of ritual murder
July 6, 2013
THE trial of former permanent secretary in the ministry of lands, Frederick Chunga, who is accused of murdering a farmer and severing his genitals for business rituals, continued at the High Court yesterday with one of the State witnesses giving a chilling account of how the murder was allegedly executed.
REPORT BY CHARLES LAITON
Chunga’s former security guard Lovemore Zulu, who was at one point arrested and detained for two weeks over George Nyachumbu’s murder, told the court he was present when the latter’s body was chopped into pieces with an axe and stacked in a fertilizer bag after he was run over by Chunga.
“Before burying the body one Kenias cut his private parts and placed them in a plastic bag which he later gave to our boss (Chunga),” Zulu said....

Paedophile priest told boy (7) he could get dead grandfather into heaven if he performed sex act 02 July 2013
A paedophile priest told a distraught seven-year-old boy that he could get his dead grandfather into heaven if he performed a sex act on him, a court has heard.
Belfast Crown Court heard that the boy was quite distressed about his grandfather being in purgatory but that 55-year-old James Martin Donaghy told the child "he could get him into haven if he helped him" and performed a sex act.
Last month just before his trial was due to begin Donaghy, originally from Lady Wallace Drive in Lisburn but now languishing in Magilligan prison, pleaded guilty to four charges of indecently assaulting the boy and one of common assault against the schoolboy on dates between January and May 1989.
Following a lengthy trial at the end of 2011, Donaghy was convicted of a total of 17 sex offences including indecent assault and committing acts of gross indecency against all three victims.
Those charges all happened on various dates between 1983 and 2000....

Cardinal Brady apologises to abuse victim Brendan Boland, Brendan Boland welcomes Cardinal Seán Brady apology
"If the right thing had been done by Father (now Cardinal) Brady, and Bishop McKiernan, the unspeakable abuse of the other children I had sought to save would not have happened."
Cardinal Brady apologises to abuse victim Brendan Boland 7 May 2012
Cardinal Sean Brady has said he wants to personally apologise to a man who was abused as a 14-year-old boy by paedophile priest Brendan Smyth.
Cardinal Brady has come under pressure after a BBC documentary.
It accused him of failing to act on abuse allegations when he was a priest.
He said he had no intention of stepping aside but hoped an assistant - with succession rights - would be quickly appointed to his archdiocese.
Speaking to Irish broadcaster RTE on Monday, Cardinal Brady said he wanted to "apologise without hesitation" to Brendan Boland "and to any victim".
"I offered that apology last Christmas, I offered to come and see him in person," he said.....
Last week, a BBC documentary uncovered new revelations about an internal Church investigation into clerical child sex abuse in 1975.
It said a teenage boy who had been sexually abused by Fr Brendan Smyth gave the names and addresses of other children who were at risk from the paedophile priest to Cardinal Brady, who at that time was a 36-year-old priest.
He passed the allegations to his superiors but did not inform the police or the children's parents.
Fr Smyth continued to sexually assault one of the boys for a year after that.
He also abused the boy's sister for seven years, and four of his cousins, up until 1988. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-17984642

Brendan Boland who, as a 14-year-old boy, was sworn to secrecy by Cardinal Seán Brady after testifying that he had been sexually abused by the paedophile Fr Brendan Smyth, has welcomed the Cardinal's public apology to him....
Mr Boland added: “I note that Cardinal Brady has now acknowledged that the information I gave him regarding other children being abused or at risk of abuse, should have been passed on to their parents in 1975.
“When I confided in the Youth Club to Father McShane in 1975, he did the right and proper thing in immediately bringing me to my parents and telling them what had been happening to me. It was only after that, that he informed his Superiors.

Church crisis: Cardinal Brady should face criminal probe says Smyth child victim
By Independent.ie reporters
Friday May 04 2012
A WOMAN, who was sexually abused as a child by paedophile priest Brendan Smyth, today called for a criminal investigation into the actions of Cardinal Sean Brady.
American lawyer Helen McGonigle, (50) who now campaigns for survivors of clerical sexual abuse, said the All Ireland Primate should resign for not alerting other families to Smyth’s horrific catalogue of abuse.
She was molested by Smyth in the late 1960s in Rhode Island, New York.
Speaking to BBC Radio Ulster today, Ms McGonigle said she was "outraged" by Cardinal Brady's response to allegations in a BBC documentary broadcast this week.
She said Cardinal Sean Brady's "duty as a human" was to protect children and his failure to act properly on Brendan Boland's complaint – when he named other five other children being abused - was "unforgivable".
The Cardinal had shown "arrogance and insensitivity", Ms McGonigle said.
She was just six-years-old and preparing for the sacrament of penance when she was abused by Smyth, who led her from her classmates into the sacristy of the church where he molested her....
Smyth was already known to have sexually molested children when he was sent to the McGonigles' parish in the summer of 1965. Using his usual modus operandi, he befriended the family and they bonded over a shared Irish ancestry.
Speaking to the Irish Independent two years ago, Ms McGonigle, who is an attorney living in Connecticut, said: "From 1967 until about 1970 he molested me. He was caught in my parish molesting children as early as 1968....
While any intervention by Cardinal Brady in 1975 would have been too late to save the children of East Greenwich, Ms McGonigle said many others could have been protected....
She said Cardinal Brady must resign and he should be charged with obstruction of justice.
"He sat on this knowledge for 35 years, from 1975 through to 2010, and Brendan Smith continued to abuse children. It is only because of the lawsuit one of his victims has brought that he has had to show his hand."

Abuse survivor: Without courage or integrity Cardinal Brady failed and it is unforgivable 5/3/12
....Now an executive director of Amnesty International Ireland, O’Gorman was not satisfied with the similar but weak defence offered by Scicluna and Brady yesterday that back in 1975 Brady was only a ‘notary’ in the interviews.
“Authority is not needed to walk into a Garda station to report the abuse and rape of children. It takes courage and a sense of moral decency,” he said, adding that it was important to remember that Brady was a highly-educated and qualified Canon lawyer at the time. He was also 35-years-old.
Commenting on the atrocious acts of Smyth that spanned a forty-year period, O’Gorman recalls the level of terror still visible in Brendan Smyth’s victims years later as something “extraordinary”.

June 29, 2010 Vatican City - The Vatican on Monday issued an unprecedented rebuke of a top cardinal who had accused the retired Vatican No. 2 of blocking clerical sex abuse investigations, publicly dressing down a man who had been praised for his criticism of church abuse cover-ups. The silencing of Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, the archbishop of Vienna and long considered a papal contender, drew heated criticism from clerical abuse victims. They said the Vatican should be honoring Schoenborn, not publicly humiliating him, for his calls for greater transparency and demands for a crackdown on priests who rape and sodomize children. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2010/06/29/MNRF1E68UI.DTL
