Despite its popularity amongst critical criminologists, the empirical basis of the moral panic account of sexual abuse has been shown to be substantially untrue. There is no evidence of an increase in reckless or baseless sexual abuse prosecutions during the 1990s, which was supposedly the height of the “moral panic” (Cross, Walsh, Simone, & Jones, 2003). Child sexual abuse, whether recent or historical, remains very difficult to prosecute, with low rates of reporting, high rates of attrition, and low rates of prosecution across jurisdictions (e.g. Connolly & Don Read, 2006; Fitzgerald, 2006; Kelly, Lovett, & Regan, 2005). In order to establish the narrative that innocent men have been the victims of an epidemic of false allegations, “moral panic” advocates have misrepresented child protection interventions and legal cases in significant ways (R. Cheit, 2014; Kitzinger, 2004; Michael Salter, 2016). This has included championing the cause of convicted sex offenders despite overwhelming evidence of guilt (R. Cheit, 2014; R. E. Cheit, 2001; Olio & Cornell, 1998)....
It is clear that “panic” is an insufficient descriptor of social responses to child sexual abuse, and captures only the most visible tabloid responses to child sex offending. While the “moral panic” literature advances a view of society united in condemnation, the social and legal response to child sexual abuse remains uncertain and contradictory. Most abused children do not disclose at the time because it is unsafe to do so, and those who disclose are routinely disbelieved and left unprotected (Swingle et al., 2016). When child or adult survivors of sexual abuse disclose, they can face a hostile response from families or communities who rally in support of the alleged or convicted offender (e.g. Adcock, 2016; Salter 2017a). Daly (2014) offers a compelling explanation of polarised responses to sexual violence, suggesting that “a minimization of sex offending and victimization, on one hand, and a demonization of certain groups as ‘sex offenders’, on the other hand” are “mutually reinforcing” (p 378 – 379)....
An over-reliance on moral panic theory can blind scholars to the power dynamics, vested interests and discursive struggles that shape public understanding and responses to child sexual abuse.....

Long before a tidal wave of women came forward with allegations against Harvey Weinstein, Corey Feldman was sounding the alarm about Hollywood sexual abuse. In his 2013 memoir “Coreyography,” he detailed how, when he and his friend and co-star Corey Haim were the biggest child stars of the 1980s, they were allegedly sexually assaulted by men in the industry. According to Feldman, Haim was raped when he was 11. —
The “Lost Boys” star never revealed the names of the men allegedly responsible, however, and since the dam broke on the Weinstein story, the actor-turned-musician has come under tremendous pressure on social media to expose the guilty parties....
In an emotional video he posted to Twitter on Wednesday, Feldman said he wants to make a movie about his experience.
It will be the “most honest and true depiction of child abuse ever portrayed,” he said. He plans to direct, produce and self-distribute it — “with your donations.” He started an Indiegogo campaign for $10 million that will be used for a legal team and security for him and his family, he said, plus funds to create the film.
“Right off the bat I can name six names,” Feldman promised, “one of them who’s still very powerful today.” He also said he can show a link between pedophilia and one of the major studios.
He’s hoping to bring down a pedophile ring with the movie, not to mention revolutionize the film industry, making it safer for child actors....
“Justice will be served,” he promised. “Because this is about good and evil.”

As the sex abuse scandal involving Harvey Weinstein expands daily, a lingering question is: What did his company know about his alleged history of mistreating women?
In the last two days, three more women have accused Weinstein of forced sex acts. Actress Natassia Malthe on Wednesday accused him of raping her at the Sanderson Hotel in London in February 2008. On Tuesday, actress Dominique Huett and former production assistant Mimi Haleyi came forward with additional assault allegations against Weinstein.
The board of directors at Weinstein Co. has said they are “shocked and dismayed” by the accusations of sexual assault and misconduct by the mini-studio’s co-founder. Weinstein’s brother, Bob, and an anonymous group of employees have said they were ignorant of their former co-chairman’s alleged conduct.
But Huett says the company knew about the executive’s bad behavior and failed to protect women who came into his orbit. Her lawsuit, the first civil case against the company since the allegations went public, said the studio and its board were “aware of Weinstein’s pattern of using his power to coerce” actresses into sexual acts.
Huett alleged in her lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, that Weinstein lured her into a Beverly Hills hotel for a meeting about her career in 2010 and made unwanted sexual contact. The lawsuit is seeking millions of dollars in damages, including punitive damages and money to cover the costs of medical and psychological care.
Female Weinstein employees were used as “honeypots” to lure victims into meetings under the pretense of normal business, giving them a false sense of security, the suit alleges. Weinstein would then dismiss the so-called honeypot employees, leaving him alone with the victim, an act of trickery detailed in the New Yorker article that first brought sexual assault allegations to light....
A spokeswoman for Weinstein has said that “allegations of nonconsensual sex are unequivocally denied.”....
“We allege the Weinstein Company knew that Harvey Weinstein ... was using his position...to bring young, aspiring actresses into vulnerable places where he would then prey on them," he said....
In all, more than 50 women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct. The latest victim, Malthe, a Norwegian-born actress, told reporters on Wednesday that Weinstein barged into her London hotel room in 2008, suggesting that he would offer her a part in an upcoming film if she would sleep with him.
Malthe said that after she told him she was not interested, Weinstein pushed her back and raped her. “I laid still and closed my eyes and just wanted it to end,” she said at a news conference in New York. “I was like a dead person. Afterwards I lay there in complete disgust.”....

Fresh Headache For Murdochs: Bill O'Reilly Got Raise After Secret Payout

Bill O'Reilly wants you to know it's all lies, driven by ideology, personal animus and professional jealousy.
Since The New York Times reported this weekend that he had agreed to a $32 million settlement to silence a longtime colleague's accusations of sexual harassment back in January, O'Reilly has been brawling to defend his already deeply tarnished reputation.
O'Reilly's former bosses at Fox News and parent company 21st Century — and especially for the Murdoch family that controls both — are fighting to contain fallout on multiple fronts. The Murdochs signed O'Reilly to a contract extension a month after their star host agreed to the secret payout — and despite knowing of at least four earlier instances in which he settled with women over sexual harassment dating back to 2004.
"Nobody pays $32 million to anybody for false accusations," former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson told HLN.
"It's shocking and it's disturbing," former Fox News host Megyn Kelly said on her new NBC Today show program.
All three Murdochs — Rupert and his sons Lachlan and James — have made pledges to reform the culture of Fox News. The late Roger Ailes, the propulsive force behind Fox News, was bought out as chairman last year after Carlson, Kelly and others accused him of sexual harassment. A host of network executives were forced out over the ensuing year for their ties to Ailes and perceptions they had enabled abusive behavior. The Murdochs paid O'Reilly $20 million to leave in the spring after several previously unknown settlements with women came to light. The network also forced out host Eric Bolling.
And yet Kelly devoted the opening minutes of her Monday morning show to an extended argument that Fox had not done enough.
On her show, Kelly just about set out a roadmap for prosecutors, arguing Fox had betrayed a pattern of hiding allegations through payments and threats, and retribution against those women who spoke up. "This has to stop," Kelly said on NBC. "The abuse of women, the shaming them, the threatening, the retaliation, the silencing of them after the fact." ....
Regulators are now assessing more broadly the family's leadership. The Murdochs rewarded O'Reilly with a new contract and a raise after learning of the Wiehl settlement. That suggests the Murdochs were willing to give O'Reilly a sixth chance on sexual harassment, just six months after ousting their chairman for the same transgression.

Two separate but chillingly similar accounts of Harvey Weinstein forcing oral sex on unwilling women in 2006 and 2010 emerged Tuesday — with one possibly opening the door to New York criminal charges.
Production assistant Mimi Haleyi broke down in tears as she described Weinstein pinning her down in a dark bedroom in his Manhattan residence a decade ago and forcing himself on her orally while she was menstruating.
"He held me down on the bed. I tried to get away, tried to get him off me, and kept asking him to stop but it was impossible. He was extremely persistent and physically overpowering," she said, her voice cracking with emotion.
Haleyi said she was adamant she did not consent to the sexual contact and even warned Weinstein she was menstruating, but he refused to take no for an answer.....
In a separate incident revealed in a new lawsuit filed Tuesday, aspiring New York actress Dominique Huett said Weinstein lured her to his room at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills in November 2010 under the guise of a business meeting.
She said once they entered the room, Weinstein excused himself and returned wearing only a bathrobe.
Weinstein asked for a massage, and when Huett declined, he "demanded" she comply, the lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court states.
The disgraced movie mogul next asked to perform oral sex on Huett and removed her clothing and initiated the contact against her wishes as she "froze" in fear, the lawsuit states.
"Unfortunately, what happened to her is what happens to (lots) of women in that situation. They go into a state of tonic immobility. It's like an out-of-body experience, a paralysis, like an animal playing dead when it's attacked," Huett's lawyer Jeffrey Herman told The News.....
The lawsuit alleges female TWC staffers were routinely used as "honeypots" to give victims a false sense of security at the start of meetings that they exited after only a few minutes.
The negligence lawsuit asks for general and punitive damages to be decided at trial....

The truth is, many of us knew something bad was going on, and failed to speak up. But what did we know, and when? I’d heard rumors of Weinstein hitting on women, rumors of assistants tasked with procuring other women for him, though no one that I knew personally told me anything specific; and I also knew from personal experience about his bullying behavior. But I didn’t chase those stories, nor did I mention Weinstein by name in a column in July when I recalled my own unpleasant encounter with him at Cannes.
I would never on any level equate being berated by Weinstein with what Nyong’o or his other accusers must have gone through; but I discovered what it was like to be threatened face-to-face by a powerful and extremely large man, and, even if I laughed it off, deep down inside I felt worry and fear.....

A sum of £250,000 was agreed, to be divided equally between the two women, and a legally binding contract — a non-disclosure agreement — drawn up after several punishing late-night sessions. The women signed it and for almost two decades have not spoken about their experience.....
“I want to publicly break my non-disclosure agreement,” she says. “Unless somebody does this there won’t be a debate about how egregious these agreements are and the amount of duress that victims are put under. My entire world fell in because I thought the law was there to protect those who abided by it. I discovered that it had nothing to do with right and wrong and everything to do with money and power.” ....

Zelda Perkins, who worked as Weinstein's assistant in Miramax's London office, claims in a new interview with Financial Times that her boss sexually harassed her and assaulted her female colleague, leading them to a settlement and strict NDA.
Dozens of women have come forward in recent weeks with claims against Harvey Weinstein, accusing the veteran film mogul of sexual assault, harassment, misconduct and rape. Many of their stories carry the same details — from hotel rooms and manipulative behavior to intimidation tactics and aggressive cover-ups — while provoking the same questions: How much did his assistants know, how tightly wound were their non-disclosure agreements and where are they now?
Zelda Perkins, who worked for Weinstein during his tenure running Miramax Films, has just answered all three in a bombshell of an interview with Financial Times. In doing so, Perkins becomes the first former staffer to come forward and publicly denounce an NDA, shedding light on how Weinstein relied on a network of lawyers to help prevent staffers from speaking out about his alleged bad behavior. She also claims that there were clauses in her contract that could have led to Weinstein's dismissal nearly two decades ago.
The report comes just days after members of The Weinstein Co. staff released a statement requesting that they be let out of their NDAs "so we may speak openly, and get to the origins of what happened here, and how."....

THE inquiry into football's sex abuse scandal is reportedly examining claims teen footie starlets were pressured to take part in horrific initiation ceremonies.
The "hazing" rituals allegedly date back to the 1980s and 1990s, according to the Mail on Sunday.
Former Stoke City apprentice George Blackstock claimed he was forced into a degrading ritual known as "gloving" in the early 1980s.
The newspaper reports that Mr Blackstock claimed he was dragged "kicking and screaming" to the first team dressing room and then sexually assaulted with a goalkeeper's glove as punishment because the tea he made for senior players had gone cold.
Mr Blackstock is reportedly due to give evidence to the inquiry in the next few weeks.
The Football Association review into child abuse claims in the sport was launched after Crewe defender Andy Woodward spoke out.
It led to others to come forward with historic allegations involving scouts at clubs including Manchester City and Chelsea.
Members of Manchester United's youth team dubbed the Class of '92, including David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Robbie Savage spoke out their own ordeals.
Beckham claimed he was forced to perform a sex act while looking at a photograph of a senior player.
Scholes was made to get int o a tumble dryer which sparked an asthma attack.
Mr Blackstock first raised his complaint in 2008, and several other apprentices supported his claim with similar allegations, the newspaper reported.
But according to reports, his claims - which did not include sexual abuse accusations - were rejected by Preston County Court in 2015.
Staffordshire cops and the Crown Prosecution Service said there was insufficient evidence to go further.
In a bid to keep pushing, Blackstock launched civil claims against goalkeeper Peter Fox for physical assault, and Stoke FC for "vicarious liability", suing for £170,000.
Fox was cleared of the "gloving claim".
Blackstock is due to give evidence for the inquiry - led by Clive Sheldon QC - in the next few weeks....
The FA review was set up after former Crewe player Andy Woodward claimed to have suffered sexual abuse as a boy in the 80s.
His disclosure - in which he waived the right to anonymity given to alleged victims of sexual offences - prompted a tide of similar complaints.
The probe has now interviewed around 15 alleged victims, and are planning to speak to an extra 20, according to reports....

Colorado prosecutors are investigating whether a voodoo ritual was involved in the deaths of two young girls whose bodies were found last month in a car on a vacant property near Norwood, PEOPLE confirms.
“It is part of the investigation by the sheriff’s office,” 7th District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Sherry McKenzie tells PEOPLE. “It is a very concerning case whenever you find two young children deceased.”
Nashika Bramble, the 36-year-old Florida mother of the two girls, and 37-year-old Madani Ceus, of Haiti, were both charged late last week with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths. Both are also charged with two counts of child abuse resulting in death.....
“The allegations are they are the kids of Medani Ceus,” Harvey Palefsky, the attorney for Nashika Bramble tells PEOPLE.
Quartet Was Part of Traveling ‘Healing’ Group: ‘An Apocalyptic Kind of Thing’
Bramble, Ceus, Archer and Eden are purportedly members of a traveling healing group that promotes prophesies about the end of the world.
“It was an apocalyptic kind of thing,” the source says. “They are guided by their dreams. They will stay some place until they have a dream and then they go someplace else. They think they can heal people.”....
Blair’s stepfather, Donnie Blair, tells PEOPLE his stepson moved to Colorado around five years ago to grow medical marijuana and met the group in the spring.
“They were telling him they were in a jam, and he is so sweet he offered them a place to stay,” he says, adding, “Over time they broke him down. They pretty much brainwashed him.”
Donnie says they told him that “no one loved him and his friends and family are the devil. They made him burn his glasses and burn his clothes.”
Donnie says while allegedly under their control he allegedly burned his entire crop of marijuana and forced him to stop feeding his dog. “They told him his dog was sick and not to feed it anymore and don’t bring it to the vet because it is not God’s way and the dog could die in peace in a natural way,” he says.
Donnie says they also allegedly tried to starve Blair and punished him for trying to feed the two little girls. “When Frederick tried to feed the kids they wouldn’t allow it to happen,” he says.....

Many of their stories carry the same details — from hotel rooms and manipulative behavior to intimidation tactics and aggressive cover-ups — while provoking the same questions: How much did his assistants know, how tightly wound were their non-disclosure agreements and where are they now?
Zelda Perkins, who worked for Weinstein during his tenure running Miramax Films, has just answered all three in a bombshell of an interview with Financial Times. In doing so, Perkins becomes the first former staffer to come forward and publicly denounce an NDA, shedding light on how Weinstein relied on a network of lawyers to help prevent staffers from speaking out about his alleged bad behavior. She also claims that there were clauses in her contract that could have led to Weinstein's dismissal nearly two decades ago.
The report comes just days after members of The Weinstein Co. staff released a statement requesting that they be let out of their NDAs "so we may speak openly, and get to the origins of what happened here, and how."....
Perkins claims that Weinstein exposed himself to her, asked her for massages and requested she watch him bathe. "This was his behavior on every occasion I was alone with him. I often had to wake him up in the hotel in the mornings and he would try to pull me into bed," she claims.....

THE inquiry into football's sex abuse scandal is reportedly examining claims teen footie starlets were pressured to take part in horrific initiation ceremonies.
The "hazing" rituals allegedly date back to the 1980s and 1990s, according to the Mail on Sunday.
Former Stoke City apprentice George Blackstock claimed he was forced into a degrading ritual known as "gloving" in the early 1980s.
The newspaper reports that Mr Blackstock claimed he was dragged "kicking and screaming" to the first team dressing room and then sexually assaulted with a goalkeeper's glove as punishment because the tea he made for senior players had gone cold.
Mr Blackstock is reportedly due to give evidence to the inquiry in the next few weeks.
The Football Association review into child abuse claims in the sport was launched after Crewe defender Andy Woodward spoke out.
It led to others to come forward with historic allegations involving scouts at clubs including Manchester City and Chelsea.
Members of Manchester United's youth team dubbed the Class of '92, including David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Robbie Savage spoke out their own ordeals.
Beckham claimed he was forced to perform a sex act while looking at a photograph of a senior player.
Scholes was made to get int o a tumble dryer which sparked an asthma attack.
Mr Blackstock first raised his complaint in 2008, and several other apprentices supported his claim with similar allegations, the newspaper reported.
But according to reports, his claims - which did not include sexual abuse accusations - were rejected by Preston County Court in 2015.
Staffordshire cops and the Crown Prosecution Service said there was insufficient evidence to go further.
In a bid to keep pushing, Blackstock launched civil claims against goalkeeper Peter Fox for physical assault, and Stoke FC for "vicarious liability", suing for £170,000.
Fox was cleared of the "gloving claim".
Blackstock is due to give evidence for the inquiry - led by Clive Sheldon QC - in the next few weeks....
The FA review was set up after former Crewe player Andy Woodward claimed to have suffered sexual abuse as a boy in the 80s.
His disclosure - in which he waived the right to anonymity given to alleged victims of sexual offences - prompted a tide of similar complaints.
The probe has now interviewed around 15 alleged victims, and are planning to speak to an extra 20, according to reports....

Colorado prosecutors are investigating whether a voodoo ritual was involved in the deaths of two young girls whose bodies were found last month in a car on a vacant property near Norwood, PEOPLE confirms.
“It is part of the investigation by the sheriff’s office,” 7th District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Sherry McKenzie tells PEOPLE. “It is a very concerning case whenever you find two young children deceased.”
Nashika Bramble, the 36-year-old Florida mother of the two girls, and 37-year-old Madani Ceus, of Haiti, were both charged late last week with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths. Both are also charged with two counts of child abuse resulting in death.....
“The allegations are they are the kids of Medani Ceus,” Harvey Palefsky, the attorney for Nashika Bramble tells PEOPLE.
Quartet Was Part of Traveling ‘Healing’ Group: ‘An Apocalyptic Kind of Thing’
Bramble, Ceus, Archer and Eden are purportedly members of a traveling healing group that promotes prophesies about the end of the world.
“It was an apocalyptic kind of thing,” the source says. “They are guided by their dreams. They will stay some place until they have a dream and then they go someplace else. They think they can heal people.”....
Blair’s stepfather, Donnie Blair, tells PEOPLE his stepson moved to Colorado around five years ago to grow medical marijuana and met the group in the spring.
“They were telling him they were in a jam, and he is so sweet he offered them a place to stay,” he says, adding, “Over time they broke him down. They pretty much brainwashed him.”
Donnie says they told him that “no one loved him and his friends and family are the devil. They made him burn his glasses and burn his clothes.”
Donnie says while allegedly under their control he allegedly burned his entire crop of marijuana and forced him to stop feeding his dog. “They told him his dog was sick and not to feed it anymore and don’t bring it to the vet because it is not God’s way and the dog could die in peace in a natural way,” he says.
Donnie says they also allegedly tried to starve Blair and punished him for trying to feed the two little girls. “When Frederick tried to feed the kids they wouldn’t allow it to happen,” he says.....

The #MeToo stories spreading across Twitter and Facebook show that just about every woman has their own personal nightmare, and A-list actresses are no exception. Reese Witherspoon, for example, used her speech at the Elle Women in Hollywood event Monday night to reveal that a director sexually assaulted her when she was just 16. That was the first time it happened to her, she said, though not the last....
She’s not alone. America Ferrera acknowledged that a man sexually assaulted her when she was 9 years old. The actress shared her story in an Instagram post, during which she urged women to “break the silence” to help future generations.
Jennifer Lawrence added her own anecdotes to the growing list. At the same Elle-sponsored event, the Oscar winner talked about being part of a humiliating nude lineup. As a way to shame her into losing weight for a role, she was forced to stand beside much thinner women, then photographed. A female producer suggested Lawrence use the picture as weight-loss “inspiration.”....
One exception is Isa Hackett, a producer for “The Man in the High Castle,” who went public last week with her story about Amazon Studios chief Roy Price, who she alleges sexually harassed her. Price was suspended by the company....

Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Lawrence used their speeches at a Hollywood event honoring women to detail experiences of assault and harassment at the hands of directors and producers and pledged to do more to stop such situations.
Witherspoon told the audience at the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards on Monday night that the recent revelations of decades of sexual misconduct allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein had prompted her own experiences to come back "very vividly."
Witherspoon said she had "true disgust at the director who assaulted me when I was 16 years old and anger at the agents and the producers who made me feel that silence was a condition of my employment." ....
Lawrence detailed what she called a "degrading and humiliating" experience of being asked early on in her career to lose 15 pounds in two weeks for a role. She was then forced to pose nude alongside thinner women for photos that a female producer told her would serve as inspiration for her diet, she said.
When she tried to speak up about the demands, Lawrence said, she couldn't find a sympathetic ear from those in power....

The horrific allegations against Harvey Weinstein have summoned forth images that will play in our heads on a loop for days, months, maybe years. Those images — detailed with sickening exactitude in the pages of the New York Times and the New Yorker, and also in the harrowing personal testimonies that have emerged since — scarcely bear repeating here. But they are part of the reason why the courage of the women who have gone on the record so far can never be overstated.
I hope, but wouldn’t dare assume, that in sharing their stories, these survivors have begun to liberate themselves from the last vestige of Weinstein’s power to wound, humiliate and silence them. But their courage comes at a cost, as true courage always does. To reveal a history of sexual harassment and/or assault from one of the entertainment industry’s most powerful men is to relinquish one’s most private experiences to a public that salivates over every morsel of celebrity gossip, and that often responds to human pain with more cruelty than sympathy....
