Frequency of dissociative identity disorder in the general population in Turkey Gamze Akyüz et al Comprehensive Psychiatry Volume 40, Issue 2, March-April 1999, Pages 151-159

Abstract:
This study attempted to determine the prevalence of dissociative identity disorder in the general population. The Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES) was administered to 994 subjects in 500 homes who constituted a representative sample of the population of Sivas City, Turkey. The mean DES score was 6.7 ± 6.1 (mean ± SD). Of the 62 respondents who scored above 17 on the DES, 32 (51.6%) could be contacted during the second phase of the study. They were matched for age and gender with a group of respondents who scored below 10 on the scale, and the Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule (DDIS) was then administered to both groups.

Seventeen subjects (1.7%) received a diagnosis of dissociative disorder according to the structured interview. In the third phase, eight of 17 subjects who had a dissociative disorder on the structured interview could be contacted for a clinical evaluation. They were matched with a nondissociative control group and interviewed by a clinician blind to the structured interview diagnosis.

Four of eight subjects were diagnosed clinically with dissociative identity disorder, yielding a minimum prevalence of 0.4%. Dissociative identity disorder is not rare in the general population. Self-rating instruments and structured interviews can be used successfully for screening these cases.

Our data, derived from a population with no public awareness about dissociative identity disorder and no exposure to systematic psychotherapy, suggest that dissociative identity disorder cannot be considered simply an iatrogenic artifact, a culture-bound syndrome, or a phenomenon induced by media influences.

Child Pornography Victims Abandoned at the Supreme Court

Child Pornography Victims Abandoned at the Supreme Court
By James R. Marsh on October 24, 2011

Last week, the Solicitor General filed this brief with the United States Supreme Court which effectively denies child victims the ability to obtain criminal restitution from the thousands of child molesters and pedophiles who collect and share child pornography.

The defendant in the case currently pending before the Supreme Court, Amy v. Monzel, admitted to law enforcement that he sexually abused his granddaughter and traded images of girls being sexually abused. A search of his home uncovered more than 800 child sex abuse images including pictures of Amy, the victim in this case. The defendant pleaded guilty to distributing child pornography and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The District court ordered the defendant to pay just $5000 in criminal restitution to Amy, a girl whose rape and sexual abuse images were found in his collection. That award was overturned on appeal. Amy then appealed to the Supreme Court where three amicus joined her in asking the Court to take the case.

Despite supporting the victims in the lower courts, the government abandoned victims of child pornography at the Supreme Court by asking the Court not to review the Court of Appeals’ denial of restitution. The Solicitor General's position on this issue effectively strips victims of child pornography the ability to obtain criminal restitution from any of the thousands of child molesters and pedophiles who collect and share their child sex abuse images.

Anonymous Hackers Take Down Child Porn Websites, Leak Users' Names
Oct 20, 2011 By Matt Liebowitz, SecurityNewsDaily Staff Writer
Members of the Anonymous hacktivist movement are claiming responsibility for taking down more than 40 secret child-pornography websites and leaking the names of more than 1,500 members of one of the illegal sites.

The Anonymous campaign began Oct. 14, when members of the hacktivist group found a cache of child-pornography websites while browsing a secret website called the Hidden Wiki, a guidebook to hundreds of underground websites invisible to search engines and regular Internet users.

Sybil Exposed: The Extraordinary Story Behind the Famous Multiple Personality Case

This book "reads like fiction" as the cover says.

But is it "fact" as the cover claims?

On page 222 of "Sybil Exposed," Nathan says, "Roseanne Barr . . . would later describe her twenty alter personalities. They included `Piggy,' `Bambi and `F . . . . . '" Nathan's cite for this statement is People Magazine, October 7, 1991.

However, there is no mention of any alter personalities in the 1991 article (pp. 84-88) by correspondent Vickie Bane. None of these names are mentioned in the article. Nathan also says that Barr "forgot about it until she entered therapy." But in the People Magazine article, Barr says she started to recover memories of abuse after her then-fiancé Tom's telephone call from rehab in 1989 telling her he was molested by a babysitter (p. 85). After she began to recall, then Barr saw a therapist.

On page 225 of her book Nathan says, "The state of Texas closed Peterson's dissociative disorders unit after determining it had overused physical restraints . . . " This claim may have originated with Frontline's 1995 documentary, "Divided Memories." In 1996, when I reviewed this Frontline documentary for a news journal, I contacted the Texas Department of Health. A spokesperson there denied any such closing of the unit. The review was published in 1996.

Nathan fails to mention that the trial of US v. Peterson et al. on mail and insurance fraud vindicated Peterson and the others of all charges. Here's what happened in this Houston trial. By February 1999, the federal government had been presenting its case for six months. The government's first expert, Dr. James Hudson, had just undergone a rigorous cross-examination by Peterson's attorney. The jury was down to 12 members and the defense was prepared to continue. The government dropped all the charges.

Inaccuracies in Nathan's book, Sybil Exposed

Inaccuracies in Nathan's book, Sybil Exposed

October 19, 2011, Statement from Dr. Patrick Suraci

I went to the Special Collections Library at John Jay College of Criminal Justice to verify statements made by Debbie Nathan in her book SYBIL EXPOSED.

1. On pages 99-100 Nathan writes: "Connie would carry her apparatus to Shirley's apartment and climb in bed with her. She would clamp the paddles to Shirley's temples, twirl the dials, and press the buttons. Connie's gadget was an old electro-convulsive machine she had retired years earlier."

Nathan cites the evidence for this in her "Notes: Chapter 8, No.38.. FRS Box 37, Files 1081, Tape 124." In this document on January 26, 1955, Shirley writes about "electric shock" along with her other treatments. There is absolutely no documentation of Nathan's outrageous claim.

2. On page 71 Nathan writes: "Completely inexperienced with men, she had little idea of how to take Gene's (O'Neill) measure. He noticed her ignorance and didn't like it. Too‘girlish' he called Flora, particularly when it came to sex. In a sheaf of notes she wrote to herself, she described feeling pain at having his finger inside her, let alone his penis. ‘Be an animal,' Gene would urge her, and he blamed her reticence on the fact that she had a profession. ‘You bring Adelphi College into the bedroom. It is not that career women don't want to go to bed – it is that they don't know how,' he scolded Flora."

To prove this Nathan cites in: "Notes: Chapter 6, No.11, FRS Box 34, File 1051" In this document Schreiber writes about Eugene O'Neill: "His complaint – Be an animal – give – you bring Adelphi College into the bedroom – we're close friends in the living room and the moment we go into the bedroom you become a stranger…he says that it is not that career women don't want to go to bed – it is that they don't know how. Outcome might have been different if she had gone to bed with him on the last Saturday after he told her about _____" Schreiber at no time writes about O'Neill's "finger" or "penis."

3. On page 232 Nathan writes: "…She (Shirley Mason) died quietly in her home, surrounded by nurses, on February 26 of that year. She was seventy-five years old. It was early evening when she died."

In my book SYBIL in her own words: The Untold Story of Shirley Mason, Her Multiple Personalities and Paintings. On page 261 I write:

"The penultimate time I phoned Shirley's home was on February 26, 1998, at 12:07 PM. In the background I heard her weak voice pleading to Roberta ,(Guy) ‘Tell him I'm sorry. I'm sorry.' Roberta informed me that Shirley was too sick to speak on the phone. I mumbled, ‘Please tell her that it's okay, it's okay. I'll call later.' …

"When I called later that day at 3:01 PM Roberta stunned me with the news than Shirley had just died."

Dr. Suraci has the telephone records of that day, February 26, 1998.

Information about Dr. Suraci:

“SYBIL In Her Own Words: The Untold Story of Shirley Mason, Her Multiple Personalities and Paintings” by Patrick Suraci, Ph.D.

SYBIL is a new book about Shirley Mason who had 16 personalities. It tells the story of her life after her cure depicted in the book SYBIL and TV movie starring Sally Field. This book contains paintings by 5 of Sybil’s alternate personalities. The author’s interviews with Shirley Mason report her own words and her new whole personality.

In the book, the author presents evidence refuting Dr. Spiegel’s claim to have hypnotized Shirley Mason. Dr. Suraci discovered an audio cassette where Ms. Mason and Dr. Cornelia Wilbur, her therapist, discuss how it was impossible for Dr. Spiegel to hypnotize Shirley, because she did not trust or like him.

Dr. Leah Dickstein, who worked with Mason in her later years, stands by her assessment of Mason as a multiple. Professionals and staff at Wilbur's Lexington, Kentucky clinic confirm that Mason was multiple, and that she attempted to integrate several times, without success. Dr. Leah Dickstein, whose mentor was Dr. Wilbur

Dr. Dickstein also stated that she was in touch with Mason for many years after Wilbur died. She remembers Mason telling her that "every word in the book is true." She stated that Wilbur had "no need to make this up." Ritter, Malcolm Doubt Cast on Story of `Sybil' AP 8/16/98

"In fact, from my perspective, it is Rieber who has distorted the evidence to establish his case. For example, the appendix includes a long letter which includes a short section in which Sybil refers to having written something to the effect that she had made up everything about being a multiple personality, but this was presented in her letter in the context of trying to find a way of not needing Dr. Wilbur. Rieber calls this a "letter of denial" of MPD/DID. There are many more instances in which Rieber misrepresents the material in the appendix to support his case."

Upcoming Webinar:

Saturday, November 19
12 pm Pacific Time
deJoly LaBrier
"All Together Now, a Multiple's Story of Hope & Healing"

deJoly LaBrier was born into a Marine Corps family that was involved in a child sex ring, government experimentation and a sadistic ritualistic cult. In 1988, deJoly began the healing journey toward wholeness while identifying 52+ alter personalities that carried on her life. She is the author of two books, DIARY OF A SURVIVOR IN ART AND POETRY, and ALL TOGETHER NOW, A MULTIPLE'S STORY OF HOPE & HEALING. Today she lives with her partner in the mountains of Northwest Georgia, enjoying the serenity and beauty of nature.

deJoly LaBrier will talk about the methods she used to heal from the effects of ritualized torture, an organized child sex ring, and government experimentation. In her recent book, ALL TOGETHER NOW, A MULTIPLE'S STORY OF HOPE AND HEALING, deJoly writes in detail about the various forms the abuse took. She is grateful that during the early part of her recovery, she was introduced to the 12-Steps of AA, as they have been adapted into other groups.

America's child death shame, Ritual Abuse Conference Scotland

America's child death shame 17 October 2011

Introduction

Every five hours a child dies from abuse or neglect in the US.
The latest government figures show an estimated 1,770 children were killed as a result of maltreatment in 2009.
A recent congressional report concludes the real number could be nearer 2,500.

In fact, America has the worst child abuse record in the industrialised world. Why? The BBC's Natalia Antelava investigates.

Scale of abuse

Sixty-six children under the age of 15 die from physical abuse or neglect every week in the industrialised world. Twenty-seven of those die in the US - the highest number of any other country.

U.S. bishop charged for not taking porn to police

U.S. bishop charged for not taking porn to police
October 14, 2011 (CBS/AP)

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Kansas City's Catholic bishop was charged Friday with not telling police about child pornography found on a priest's computer, making him the highest-ranking U.S. Catholic official indicted on a charge of failing to protect children.

Kansas City-St. Joseph Catholic Diocese Bishop Robert Finn, the first U.S. bishop criminally charged with sheltering an abusive clergyman, pleaded not guilty to one misdemeanor count of failing to report suspected child abuse.

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said Finn and his diocese, which also was charged with one count, had "reasonable cause" to suspect a child had been abused after learning of the images.

"Now that the grand jury investigation has resulted in this indictment, my office will pursue this case vigorously because it is about protecting children," Baker said. "I want to ensure there are no future failures to report resulting in other unsuspecting victims."

Finn has acknowledged that he and other diocese officials knew for months about hundreds of "disturbing" images of children that were discovered on a priest's computer but did not report the matter to authorities or turn over the computer.

....The New York Times reports that Bishop Finn was appointed in 2005 and his vision to return the diocese to more traditional practices has drawn strong opinions. The paper reports he is one of only a few bishops affiliated with Opus Dei, a conservative movement....

Where child sacrifice is a business

Where child sacrifice is a business

By Chris Rogers BBC News, Kampala 11 October 2011

The villages and farming communities that surround Uganda's capital, Kampala, are gripped by fear.

Schoolchildren are closely watched by teachers and parents as they make their way home from school. In playgrounds and on the roadside are posters warning of the danger of abduction by witch doctors for the purpose of child sacrifice.

The ritual, which some believe brings wealth and good health, was almost unheard of in the country until about three years ago, but it has re-emerged, seemingly alongside a boom in the country's economy.

The mutilated bodies of children have been discovered at roadsides, the victims of an apparently growing belief in the power of human sacrifice....

The work of the police task force has been strongly criticised by the UK-based charity, Jubilee Campaign.

It says in a report that the true number of cases is in the hundreds, and claims more than 900 cases have yet to be investigated by the police because of corruption and a lack of resources.

Relationship of Childhood Abuse and Household Dysfunction to Many of the Leading Causes of Death in Adults

Relationship of Childhood Abuse and Household Dysfunction to Many of the Leading Causes of Death in Adults: The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study -

American Journal of Preventive Medicine
Volume 14, Issue 4 , Pages 245-258, May 1998

Vincent J Felitti MD, FACP, Robert F Anda MD, MS, Dale Nordenberg MD, David F Williamson MS, PhD, Alison M Spitz MS, MPH, Valerie Edwards BA, Mary P Koss PhD, James S Marks MD, MPH

Abstract

Background: The relationship of health risk behavior and disease in adulthood to the breadth of exposure to childhood emotional, physical, or sexual abuse, and household dysfunction during childhood has not previously been described.

Methods: A questionnaire about adverse childhood experiences was mailed to 13,494 adults who had completed a standardized medical evaluation at a large HMO; 9,508 (70.5%) responded. Seven categories of adverse childhood experiences were studied: psychological, physical, or sexual abuse; violence against mother; or living with household members who were substance abusers, mentally ill or suicidal, or ever imprisoned. The number of categories of these adverse childhood experiences was then compared to measures of adult risk behavior, health status, and disease. Logistic regression was used to adjust for effects of demographic factors on the association between the cumulative number of categories of childhood exposures (range: 0–7) and risk factors for the leading causes of death in adult life.

Results: More than half of respondents reported at least one, and one-fourth reported =2 categories of childhood exposures. We found a graded relationship between the number of categories of childhood exposure and each of the adult health risk behaviors and diseases that were studied (P < .001). Persons who had experienced four or more categories of childhood exposure, compared to those who had experienced none, had 4- to 12-fold increased health risks for alcoholism, drug abuse, depression, and suicide attempt; a 2- to 4-fold increase in smoking, poor self-rated health, =50 sexual intercourse partners, and sexually transmitted disease; and a 1.4- to 1.6-fold increase in physical inactivity and severe obesity. The number of categories of adverse childhood exposures showed a graded relationship to the presence of adult diseases including ischemic heart disease, cancer, chronic lung disease, skeletal fractures, and liver disease. The seven categories of adverse childhood experiences were strongly interrelated and persons with multiple categories of childhood exposure were likely to have multiple health risk factors later in life.

Conclusions: We found a strong graded relationship between the breadth of exposure to abuse or household dysfunction during childhood and multiple risk factors for several of the leading causes of death in adults.

....However, our estimates of the prevalence of childhood exposures are similar to estimates from nationally representative surveys, indicating that the experiences of our study participants are comparable to the larger population of U.S. adults. In our study, 23.5% of participants reported having grown up with an alcohol abuser; the 1988 National Health Interview Survey estimated that 18.1% of adults had lived with an alcohol abuser during childhood. Contact sexual abuse was reported by 22% of respondents (28% of women and 16% of men) in our study. A national telephone survey of adults in 1990 using similar criteria for sexual abuse estimated that 27% of women and 16% of men had been sexually abused.

Expert outlines how child abuse can be gone in three generations

Expert outlines how child abuse can be gone in three generations
by Josh Weinhold 10.01.2011
ELKHART — Victor Vieth knows the task is daunting. But that doesn’t mean he believes it’s something to shy away from.

Though it will take decades of tremendous effort, the child protection expert believes America can end child abuse in the next three generations.

“History is full of examples of small groups of people that came together to do things that were at least as difficult as ending child abuse,” he said....

He outlined a number of ways to improve the reporting, investigating and follow-up of child abuse cases. The country’s child protection system lacks the proper tools to train people in mandatory reporting professions, he said. More thorough education of individuals in those fields, he said, is key to improving the identification and treatment of victims....

Another major problem, Vieth said, is a lack of awareness in political circles about how rampant child abuse continues to be. He cited a study that found the number of child abuse victims is 10 times higher than the number of people diagnosed with cancer, yet far more federal funding is directed toward fighting that disease.

The more attention that is brought to that fact, he said, the more resources communities will have to combat the child abuse epidemic.
